Here on Notably Disney we often think about the background score as setting the mood and energy of the visuals we are enveloped in. Composer Mike Rubino plays a major role in accomplishing that, whether in contributing scoring to marketing materials for films like Avengers: Endgame, Tron Legacy, Dumbo, and Planes: Fire and Rescue, to composing the background music for updates to Disneyland’s Mickey’s Toontown and, more recently, Walt Disney World’s Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. In the new book Disneyland and the Rise of Automation: How Technology Created the Happiest Place on Earth, scholar Dr. Roland Betancourt deconstructs how Walt’s original family park served as a foundational space for automation during a time when humans increasingly relied on technology for many of their needs and desires. This well-researched title from Princeton University Press explores how many of Disneyland’s foundational attractions have relied on sophisticated technologies to make modern mechanical magic. Dr. Betancourt is Chancellors’ Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of California, Irvine. On this episode we discuss the book’s development and content.

Legendary composer Mark Isham has, for decades, provided some of the most dynamic film scores of our time with his distinct style that has drawn on many styles, including jazz and electronic music. His association with Disney dates back to 1983 with Never Cry Wolf and he has since crafted a number of scores for the Mouse House, from ABC’s long-running and critically-acclaimed Once Upon a Time series to movies like Miracle, Togo, and Invincible. The Emmy and Grammy award-winning composer holds an Academy Award nomination for A River Runs Through It and a Golden Globe nomination for Nell. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Eight Below, a stirring score that is a focal points for today’s conversation, in which he chats with host Brett Nachman about his career trajectory, composing process, and many of his beloved projects.

This compendium to the 1940 classic features lots of rarely-seen and heard stories, artwork, and context. Sixty years later it remains one of the most enduring and beloved Disney movies of all time. Mary Poppins, based on the PL Travers stories, has even inspired a making of film through 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks. In tandem, the late songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman, responsible for the classic tunes, have received their fair share of coverage through projects like The Boys: The Sherman Brothers Story from 2009. Thankfully, now we have a written compendium that illustrates how integral the Sherman Brothers were to the development of the 1964 Walt Disney feature. Making Mary Poppins, written by professor and author Todd James Pierce, is a deep dive into the production, along with giving further backstory to the famed songwriters. Todd previously joined host Brett Nachman back in 2020 as he discussed writing Three Years in Wonderland about the development of Disneyland through CV Wood’s influence. Now he returns to share details about Making Mary Poppins: The Sherman Brothers, Walt Disney, and the Creation of the Classic Film.

Yet Pocahontas also remains a celebrated film for its score and songs, garnering Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz a pair of Academy Awards. June 7 marks the end of an era, one that lasted 34 years to be precise. The closing of Jim Henson’s MuppetVision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios signifies not only a farewell to one of the oldest and most beloved attractions in the park, but also to one of the cleverest shows that has ever existed in a Disney theme park. As the last production that Jim Henson worked on, MuppetVision 3D is filled with laughs, heart, and ingenuity. Last fall saw the release of a massive new autobiography from legendary Disney Imagineer Bob Weis, who ultimately led Walt Disney Imagineering as its president toward the end of his career with the company. Dream Chasing: My Four Decades of Success and Failure with Walt Disney Imagineering recounts Bob’s amazing time with Disney Imagineering, working on new theme parks like the Disney-MGM Studios and Tokyo DisneySea to conceptualizing projects that never materialized. It’s a wonderful look at not only one person’s career, but also the major endeavors that they contributed to. Joining host Brett Nachman to review this title are Emily McDermott and Courtney Guth from the Book the Mouse Club podcast.

15 years ago Disney released a documentary directed and written by Theodore Thomas that unveiled a relatively unexplored part of Disney history, at least in film form: when Walt and his colleagues were commissioned by the United States government to engage in a goodwill trip down to Latin and South America to forge positive relationships with their governments and peoples. Now, Thomas, as well as celebrated Disney authors Didier Ghez and JB Kaufman, have assembled to produce Walt Disney & El Grupo in Latin America, a new monograph from the Hyperion Historical Alliance, which offers a day-by-day telling of the experience with glorious photography, narrative accounts, and other details. On May 25, 2024 the world lost a legendary songwriter emblematic of the term Disney Legend. Richard M. Sherman, who, with his brother Roger, wrote some of the most beloved songs of the 20th century and into the 21st century, too, passed away at the age of 95. It’s almost impossible to sum up Richard’s life and legacy in the span of a few sentences, or even over this conversation, though I want to create space to honor a man whose music and spirit will continue to illuminate our lives for generations to come. Author Jeff Kurtti is a celebrated Disney author who has written several dozen books about various facets of Disney. Back in Fall 2020, John Debney joined Notably Disney for the first time, and he returns again! The Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated composer possesses a prolific catalogue of film projects that he has contributed to the company, from Hocus Pocus and The Princess Diaries, to Inspector Gadget and 2016’s The Jungle Book. Although he and host Brett Nachman discussed some of John’s film-based efforts on that episode, they did not fully explore his equally important efforts within the Disney theme parks. Today on Notably Disney, Brett welcomes John back to share more about his work for the company, including compositions for attractions including Phantom Manor and it’s a small world at Disneyland Paris, among others. For nearly 40 years composer David Newman has written scores that span all parts of The Walt Disney Company, including Tim Burton short film Frankenweenie in 1984, 1989’s Cranium Command show at Epcot, The Mighty Ducks in 1992, 102 Dalmatians in 2000, and most recently arranging 2021’s West Side Story score. David Newman is an Academy Award-nominated composer whose catalogue of contributions is truly vast, particularly on the family film front, from humongous hits like Ice Age and Scooby-Doo to The Flintstones and Anastasia, for which he obtained the Oscar nom. 25 years ago, Disney engaged in one of its earliest reimaginings of a classic animated film into live-action with the massive hit 101 Dalmatians, starring Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels, and Joely Richardson. The film’s lush score, composed by the legendary and late Michael Kamen, is perhaps an overlooked gem that features some memorable themes and rich orchestration. On this episode of Notably Disney, host Brett Nachman reunites some of 101 Dalmatians’ musical players in reflecting back on the creative process behind this magnificent score, as well as their musical journeys and collaborations with Kamen. Joining in are orchestrator Robert Elhai, orchestrator Brad Warnaar, music editor Christopher Brooks, and music recordist and mixer Stephen McLaughlin.

Composer Christopher Willis is the Emmy-nominated musician behind the shorts and now the attraction, and along with his wife, vocalist Elyse Willis, the pair co-wrote the "Nothing Can Stop Us Now" from the popular ride. Chris' work also extends to composing Veep and The Lion Guard, whereas Elyse has lent her voice to tunes in films like La La Land and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In just over the past decade, Joseph Trapanese has made his mark in Hollywood with electric scores, orchestrations, and arrangements for popular films. Very notably, his orchestration for TRON: Legacy, composed by Daft Punk, has been recognized by the film community as one of the best scores in recent years. He is the composer behind Hollywood hits including Oblivion and Only the Brave and co-composed The Great Showman with John Debney, a past Notably Disney guest, among handling other scores. For Disney, he has also composed the score for the television series TRON: Uprising and the 2019 iteration of Lady and the Tramp. His experiences are vast in such a relatively short period of time, and it’s always dynamic to listen to his scores. Author Christopher Merritt has been a Disney Imagineer since 1996, and most recently co-wrote Marc Davis in His Own Words: Imagineering the Disney Theme Parks with Pete Docter (Director, Monsters, Inc., Up, Inside Out). On this episode of Notably Disney, Chris discusses with Brett Nachman the process of developing a massive, two-volume set of books about Marc's life once he became a Disney Imagineer. Within this fantastic tome is hundreds of drawings, paintings and other pieces of art composed by Marc during his two-decade career with Walt Disney Imagineering. Each chapter covers a different attraction or concept, such as Pirates of the Caribbean and it's a small world. Chris shares the special relationship he shared with Marc and the mentorship he received from him as a budding animator. Also significantly, Chris talks about the major undertaking of translating decades of work into a one-of-a-kind book, and how it took a team of folks from Disney and beyond to gather the amazing material featured in the final product.

Vigoda and her collaborator Brendan Milburn, who has been featured in a previous episode of Notably Disney, crafted songs for the Tinker Bell films and stage shows in the Magic Kingdom, Disneyland and the Walt Disney Studios park in Paris. Perhaps most notably, Vigoda and Milburn wrote the songs for Toy Story: The Musical on Disney Cruise Line.

Songwriter Brendan Milburn is responsible for co-writing many tunes for The Walt Disney Company for more than a decade. Along with his musical partner Valerie Vigoda, Brendan co-wrote songs for Toy Story: The Musical, which ran on the Disney Wonder on Disney Cruise Line from 2008-2016. Their music has also entered the film space with the Tinker Bell movies and the Disney theme parks, including crowd-pleasing tunes heard in Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom.
On this episode of Notably Disney, Brendan shares his musical journey and what led him and Valerie to create original music for Disney. Along the way Brendan shares how they channeled Randy Newman to develop new tunes for the Toy Story production at sea. He even unveils some secrets behind the Toy Story tunes that did not quite come to fruition.

Our D23 Expo 2019 recap continues on Notably Disney with an additional set of perspectives. First up is a conversation with musician Matt Grinke, who leads The Happiest Big Band on Earth, based out of Vancouver and plays various renditions of Disney songs. He discusses what it was like to meet many talented performers, including Randy Newman (Toy Story, The Princess and the Frog) and Auli'i Cravalho (Moana), and catch some amazing presentations like The Music and Sounds of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.
Later, his brother Joel Grinke, a creative technologist, comes onto Notably Disney to share his perceptions of some of the music- and book-related presentations, as well as how the Expo has evolved over the past several iterations that he has attended. Travel back in time to the 1964/1965 New York World's Fair with me as we cover both a music review of the fantastic CD box set called "Walt Disney and the 1964 New York World's Fair" and a review of "Yesterday's Tomorrow: Disney's Magical Mid-Century" by Don Hahn. Let's get to the details of this soundtrack review in a snap! In this special bonus episode of Notably Disney, Brett reviews the soundtrack for the culmination of 11 years' worth of films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Avengers: Endgame. The score, composed by Alan Silvestri, is some of his finest work in years. Brett deconstructs each of the tracks from the Hollywood Records release in this review. Among the standouts in Avengers: Endgame are "Becoming Whole Again," "In Plain Sight," "Whatever It Takes," "Portals," and "End of Main."
