What happened was I got a break. Once I had my daughter, there was actually some space and a new way of being, new things that needed my attention. And I no longer wanted to keep plotting along because that was the path I had set myself on, and it was the moment that actually let me look at the bigger picture of my life and say, ‘I don't want to feel like this anymore. • "We do not bring people down. We don't point out flaws. We're all about lifting and boosting women, like putting the crown on women, so when we say that we build words and build backstories about people, it's not in a cutting people down sort of way. • "Rock bottom moments are kind of… they're so great. They suck in the moment and it's like the worst thing you can feel, but without them, we don't grow. I don't say we don't grow, it's a lot more challenging to grow without that push." -Melanie Hersch [16:24]
  • "For me, the best version is when you're being fully authentic. You're whole self. You're truly authentic whether that upsets people or not, and you're just standing in your own worth. Then whatever comes from there is, that's the golden nugget." -Melanie Hersch [28:38]
  • "Instead of trying to push the anxiety away, invite it to the table to have tea with you. Like bring it in. Like come on, let's have a cup of tea and let's talk about what's going on right now, little one, and really be able to work with it. That's the only way through it, you know." -Melanie Hersch [36:39]

Standout Quotes: * "There are people that make it their job to try to work every system they possibly can and if you've never come across one in the world, consider yourself lucky." -Jessie Browning [28:14] * "I don't think a lot of women understand how much you really have to be intentional with being a stay-at-home mom. It's not something that you kind of do, and not to say there aren't women who do it, but I would say the vast majority are very intentional when they're home. They're very intentional with their families, their kids, because they do know that every day's the same. Every day is pretty much the same. The monotony of it all and trying to make it something and make it memorable and not have that monotony fall onto the kids." -April Noelle Grant [35:34] * "So part of the reason I started it as well is to create this community, because what I've realized is making massive, sweeping changes is really hard when you have no support." -April Noelle Grant [53:38]

Jessie and her husband Daniel are small business owners. For the last 13 years they have worked through 4 pregnancies, put in late nights, lots of weekends, and many countless sacrifices to keep their laundromat and coffee shop open for people for 363 days a year. Their mission is to help customers have a great day by starting off with good coffee.

The COVID - 19 pandemic has forced them stay on top of directives and keep pivoting. They made changes to reduce the spread of the disease by creating online menu and payment options and door collection but for the greater good they had to close one of their shops.

Daniel's habit of being prepared for the worse was an asset in times like this. His preparedness helped him to secure a loan and works things out quickly so that they had the money to pay overheads for 2.5 months. With the help of the PPP loan, they were able to re-open their closed location.

Also, they are parents of 4 children and with the lockdown came a new challenge of taking care of their kids and also working on their other businesses that can run irrespective of outside situations.

Listen in as their share how they saved their business and how they are managing their work-life balance when the whole family is staying home.

When we hide them and we hide what we think we should be shameful about, we're not even presenting ourselves to ourselves, so how are you going to show it to your husband if you're not even letting yourself see it." -Jessie Browning [23:43] * "I can tell you that the most powerful turning points that I've had in this journey have been when I do sort of finally give up this insider knowledge, this thing that I've been grappling with in my mind... It really allows finally for that opening to then be filled with something better. You open that wound and boom- something better fills it up." -Serena Bennett [26:11] * "Typically as women as mothers, we want to be that idolized version of 'oh i don't know how she does it.'
