Scott Porter and Matt Simmons join David Gibbons to discuss the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill or the Macondo blowout), a massive ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, now considered the largest offshore spill in U.S. history. Some estimates placed it by late May or early June as among the largest oil spills in the world with tens of millions of gallons spilled to date. The spill stems from a sea floor 10,000 foot deep oil gusher (MC252) that followed the April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion. The explosion killed 11 platform workers and injured 17 others. The exact spill flow rate is uncertain in part because BP has refused to allow independent scientists to perform accurate measurements and is a matter of ongoing debate.
Don Chapman Founder of The Lost Canadians joins David Gibbons as a tireless fighter for the rights of Canadians who have been stripped of their citizenship by the heartless politicians and bureaucrats in the Canadian government. There are hundreds of thousands of Lost Canadians in Canada, in the United States and around the world, citizens whose right to citizenship was taken away from them without their knowledge. On April 19, 2009, the Canadian Citizenship Act was amended by Bill C-37, to amend the Citizenship Act. Also known as the Lost Canadian Bill, Bill C-37 solved most of the problems facing Lost Canadians. However, there are still hundreds of Lost Canadians, including War Bride children, children born out of wedlock during the Second World War, and Mennonites who have been refused citizenship by the Canadian government as recently as Christmas Eve 2009.

David Gibbons is joined by Dr. Denise Harzing of the Wild Dolphin Project. The oil spill is affecting thousands of fish, turtles, and dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico. Recent footage obtained by activist John Wathen, who flew over the spill, shows dolphins and whales in the oil slick, some belly-up already dead, others struggling to breathe in the toxic fumes. Dr. Herzing commented recently at her website “The sad fact is that most of the animals caught in the offshore spill are probably already dead or doomed. But the suppression both of media and air documentation is a disservice to the public, and to the environment that is suffering terribly. It is inconceivable that our government, BP, and other agencies have taken this posture to give the American and global public the illusion of an under-control situation. Without the ability to bear witness to the death and destruction, it is likely we will not learn and will fail to change our habits, once again setting the stage for continued tragedies in the future.”

The spill stems from a sea floor 10,000 foot deep oil gusher that followed the April 20, 2010 Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion. The explosion killed 11 platform workers and injured 17 others. The gusher originates from a deepwater wellhead 5,000 feet below the ocean surface. The resulting oil slick covers a surface area of at least 2,500 square miles, with the exact size and location of the slick fluctuating from day to day.

In recent articles he quotes “Some twenty of the estimated three hundred camps are in grave danger from flood waters as they are located on or at the bottom of steep hills. The danger is greatest is said to be “red” camps, a UN designation for those camps most at risk for flooding. The largest of the “red” camps is the so-called “golf course” camp, formerly secured by the American 86th Airbone, on the grounds of the Petionville Club, a private golf course that is now home to an estimated 60,000 Haitians. The essential services at the camp are housed in the ravine at the bottom of the hill, the area most likely to be over-run by water streaming down the slope of the golf course, which, like much of Haiti, has been largely stripped of its trees, this time by the refugees themselves. It is thought that here heavy rains could kill 5,000 people.”

The Feast of St. Agatha is the most important religious festival in the city of Catania in Sicily. The event is held every year between February 3rd and 5th, and again on August 17. Between three to six thousand people arrive in Catania for the festival and during the course of the year, its history attracts up to almost one million devotees from Italy and abroad. On August 17th of 2009, Astor Morgan created a body of work during the festival, working in crowded and at times dangerous conditions.
