Lessons from the Life of David • I Chronicles 22:6-10 and 29:1-20 • November 23, 2025 • Dan Johnston, NRHC Elder
God owns everything, and we are merely temporary managers of His resources. Biblical generosity stems from understanding two fundamental roles: God as the owner of all things and humans as stewards entrusted with managing His resources for His purposes. True generosity is not defined by the amount given, but by the spirit in which we give—willingly, joyfully, and wholeheartedly. The ultimate goal of generosity is worship, as we recognize that everything comes from God and is for God. We are called to dedicate ourselves to the Lord, holding our possessions with open hands rather than clenched fists, mindful that we are pilgrims journeying lightly through this temporary life.
Lessons from the Life of David • 2 Samuel 7:1-18 • November 16, 2025 • Brett Day, NRHC Church Planting Resident
We don’t repay God—He lavishes His gifts upon us. When David, at the height of his prosperity, desires to build a house for God, God completely flips the script. Rather than accepting David's offer, He reminds David of all He has already done and promises to build David an everlasting house: a royal dynasty ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The message is clear: God has done for us what we could never do for ourselves. David’s humble response—sitting in God’s presence and asking, “Who am I that you are mindful of me?”—is the only fitting response to the gospel.
Lessons from the Life of David • 1 Kings 1-2 • November 9, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
There is a profound truth that we often resist – we’re not in control, and we never really were. King David, at the end of his life, - frail, cold, and surrounded by unfinished business – invites us to see ourselves in his life. Every person dies with unchecked boxes on their list, unsolved problems, and unresolved relationships. Scripture doesn’t shy away from these uncomfortable realities but instead highlights God’s strength in our weakness, calling us to walk in His ways and trust His covenant faithfulness and timing.

Lessons from the Life of David • Psalm 63 • October 26, 2025 • Brett Day, NRHC Church Planter in Residence
Trials can either make us bitter or better, depending on how we respond to them. Through the lens of Psalm 63, written by David while fleeing from his son Absalom in the wilderness, we see that the worst circumstances can bring out the best character when we choose to seek God. While David's best circumstances often brought out his worst character (such as adultery and murder), his worst circumstances drove him closer to God. David shows us there are three essential choices believers must make during trials: to be with God, to behold God, and to be like God.
Lessons from the Life of David • 2 Samuel 18 • October 19, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
Exploring 2 Samuel 18, we confront the sobering reality that, while forgiveness is always available, we cannot erase our past sins. The narrative of David and Absalom illustrates how our actions can create consequences that extend beyond ourselves and affect future generations. David’s earlier sin with Bathsheba triggered a cascade of events, ultimately resulting in civil war and the loss of his son. This passage invites us to reflect on how our choices carry weight, impacting our families and communities. Yet, even in the face of pain and regret, we’re reminded of God’s steadfast grace. While David could not save Absalom, this story directs us to Jesus, who alone died in our place and triumphed over sin and death. As we contemplate our own lives, we’re encouraged to accept God’s grace, trusting Christ’s redemptive power while navigating the lingering consequences of our actions.

Lessons from the Life of David • 2 Samuel 11-12 • October 5, 2025 • Dan Johnston, NRHC Elder
David’s greatest moral failure in 2 Samuel 11 and 12 is a picture of human fallibility and divine grace. It reminds us that even those closest to God’s heart can fall into sin. It challenges us to recognize our own vulnerability and the importance of keeping short accounts with the Lord. David’s adultery and subsequent cover-up serve as a stark warning – it can happen to anyone. Yet God’s relentless pursuit of reconciliation through the prophet, Nathan, reminds us that no matter how far we’ve strayed, it’s never too late to return to our loving Father. We need to cultivate 'Nathans' in our lives - trusted individuals who can speak truth into our blind spots. This passage reminds us of the transformative power of confession and the unmerited grace of God that is available to all who humble themselves before Him.
Lessons from the Life of David • 2 Samuel 6 • September 28, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
The story of David bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem reminds us that God's holiness is both dangerous and life-giving. It emphasizes the importance of approaching God with reverence, obedience, and humility, while also highlighting the blessings that come from properly honoring God's presence. Scripture challenges us to consider how we respond to God's holiness in our own lives.
Lessons from the Life of David • I Samuel 24-26 • September 14, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
1 Samuel 24-26 invites us to explore the profound lessons of waiting for God's timing. Through David's encounters with Saul, we witness the struggle between human impatience and divine purpose. David's restraint in the face of temptation to take matters into his own hands serves as a poignant reminder for us all. Scripture challenges us to consider how often we rush God's plan or manipulate circumstances to fit our desires. David's journey teaches us that true faith means surrendering our rights and trusting in God's sovereign timing. Are we willing to wait on the Lord, even when our way seems easier?
I Samuel 18-20 • September 7, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
What does godly friendship look like in a world of shallow connections? The contrast between Saul's jealousy-driven actions and Jonathan's selfless love paints a vivid picture of covenant love – a love that reflects the very heart of the gospel. Are we living out covenant love, or are we trapped in comparison and jealousy? By embracing gospel-shaped friendships, we have the opportunity to not only experience deeper connections but also to reflect God's unconditional love to a world desperate for genuine relationships.
Lessons from the Life of David • I Samuel 17 • August 31, 2025 • Dan Johnston, NRHC Elder
The true giant in 1 Samuel 17 isn’t Goliath, but God Himself. This story reminds us to view our personal struggles and obstacles through a spiritual lens, recognizing that God is greater than any challenge we encounter. As we face our own giants - be it depression and anxiety, addiction, or strained relationships - we're encouraged to stand firm in faith, knowing that our God reigns above it all. Like David, we can trust in God's power rather than our own abilities, transforming how we approach life's challenges.
Lessons from the Life of David • I Samuel 16:1-13 • August 24, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
The story of David’s anointing as king reminds us that God’s perspective often differs radically from our own. While we tend to judge by outward appearances, God looks at the heart. We're encouraged to remain faithful in our current circumstances, understanding that God can use ordinary people and situations for extraordinary purposes. The parallel between David's seeming insignificance and Christ's humble appearance reminds us that God's most significant victories often come through apparent weakness. This message invites us to examine our own lives, asking where we might be disqualifying ourselves or others based on outward appearances, and challenges us to trust God's vision over our own limited perspective.
Nehemiah 1-13 • August 17, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
God uses brokenness to stir a burden within us that, when surrendered to Him, becomes faith in action. Nehemiah’s story of rebuilding Jerusalem's walls isn't just ancient history—it serves as a blueprint for our own spiritual journeys. Our awareness of brokenness, both in ourselves and in the world around us, can be the very thing God uses to activate us for His purposes. Nehemiah challenges us to stop hiding our brokenness or keeping it at a distance, but instead to bring it before God in prayer and repentance. As we do this, we may find that the very things we wish were different about our lives become the avenues through which God works most powerfully.
Habakkuk 1-3 • August 10, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
Habakkuk teaches us how to pray when we don’t understand God’s ways. He brought his doubts and frustrations to God, showing us the importance of honest prayer, wrestling with God, waiting on His timing, and ultimately worshiping Him despite challenging circumstances. We, too, can trust in God’s character and sovereignty, even when His ways seem confusing or unjust.
Matthew 7:13-29 • August 3 • Brett Day, NRHC Planter in Residence
Matthew 7 presents us with the stark reality of two paths in life: the narrow way that leads to life, and the broad way that leads to destruction. Jesus challenges us to enter through the narrow gate, reminding us that true discipleship is difficult and exclusive. He warned us about the dangers of false teachers who may appear to be sheep but are inwardly ravaging wolves. The sobering truth is that we can be deceived not just by others, but by ourselves. We're urged to examine our faith, ensuring it's built on what Christ has done for us, not merely religious activities. The call is to reflect deeply on the authenticity of our relationship with God, reminding us that eternity is at stake.
The Greatest Sermon Ever • Matthew 7:1-12 • July 27, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
In Matthew 7, Jesus teaches us about relationships in the Kingdom of God. He focuses on how to judge wisely, pray dependently, and love actively. Our interactions with others should be characterized by humility, wisdom, and empathy, which stem from our relationship with Him. Scripture challenges us to examine our hearts, seek God's help, and live out the golden rule as a reflection of Christ's love.
Matthew 6:19-24 • July 13, 2025 • Gray Clary, NRHC Discipleship Pastor
Jesus' teachings on earthly and heavenly treasures challenge us to examine where our true treasures lie. He warns us about the danger of storing up earthly treasures, which are vulnerable to decay and theft, and instead urges us to focus on heavenly treasures—a deeper relationship with God that cannot be corrupted or stolen. This strikes at the heart of our consumer culture, where we're constantly bombarded with ads promising fulfillment through material possessions. When was the last time we desired God more than a goal or possession? This introspection reveals the state of our hearts and where our true devotion lies. Christ calls us to shift from a now-mindedness to an eternity-mindedness, finding our security and worth in Him rather than in worldly promises.
The Greatest Sermon Ever • Matthew 6:1-18 • July 6, 2025 • Chad Minchew, NRHC Worship Pastor
Jesus' teachings in Matthew 6:1-18 remind us that our actions should stem from a pure heart, not from a desire for recognition. They challenge us to shift our focus from impressing others to pleasing God, cultivating a more intimate relationship with Him. Are we applying these teachings in our personal lives? Are we willing to challenge those we disciple in these areas? By aligning our motives with God's will, we open ourselves to a deeper journey of faith.

Matthew 5:38-48 is an active call to love our enemies and go the extra mile in serving others. We're reminded that God's love extends to both the righteous and unrighteous, just as the sun shines and rain falls on all. This divine love sets a new standard for us - one that extends beyond loving only those who love us in return. This passage invites us to reflect on our own hearts. Who do we consider 'off limits' for God's love? Are we allowing our hurts and prejudices to block others from experiencing God's grace through us? It pushes us to move beyond our comfort zones and natural inclinations, encouraging us to love as Christ loves - without limits or conditions.

The Greatest Sermon Ever • Matthew 5:13-16 • June 15, 2025 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
Matthew 5:13-16 challenges us to consider our identity and purpose as followers of Christ. Jesus declares that we are the 'salt of the earth' and the 'light of the world' - powerful metaphors that speak to our essential role in preserving, purifying, and illuminating a world in desperate need. Just as salt was invaluable in ancient times for preservation and flavor, we're called to have a transformative impact on our surroundings. Similarly, as light, we're meant to guide others out of darkness and reveal truth. This isn't just about personal faith; it's about living out our calling in ways that tangibly affect those around us.
The Greatest Sermon Ever • Matthew 5:1-12 • June 8, 2025 • Dan Johnston, NRHC Elder
The Sermon on the Mount invites us to reimagine what it means to live 'the good life.' The Beatitudes, found in Matthew 5:3-12, paint a radical picture of blessedness that challenges our worldly notions of success and happiness. We're called to embrace a 'kingdom reversal' where weakness trumps strength, internal transformation outweighs external appearances, and suffering for Christ supersedes comfort. This message urges us to shift our focus from merely getting into heaven to allowing heaven to permeate our lives here and now. As we reflect on these counter-cultural values, we're encouraged to examine our hearts, confront our weaknesses, and boldly live out our faith, even in the face of adversity. The Beatitudes aren't a ladder to climb, but a window through which we can glimpse the very heart of God and His kingdom.

In this message, we explore what it means when Jesus becomes the Lord of our lives. Our new identity IN CHRIST gives us a new place to belong. And this belonging brings purpose and responsibility to do our part for the good of others and the glory of God.

In this message, we explore how being saved by grace changes everything. We are reconciled to God, reconciled to one another, and become members of God's family.
August 25, 2024 • Chad Merrell, NRHC Lead Pastor
Because God has intentionally acted to seek and to save, we are given a new life and a new identity IN CHRIST. With this new Identity comes right standing before God, allowing us to be in and grow in relationship with Him. We are secure in our standing because of the power of God, not because of any power or achievement of our own.
