The Houli’s Hooley Show

View Details

This week, Paddy, Bill, and Clay take listeners on a journey that only the Hooley could produce. It starts with dreams of winning the $800 million Mega Millions jackpot before Paddy heads to the South Loop with his dad to meet Irish American filmmaker Colin Flynn, completely forgetting that Lollapalooza has swallowed Grant Park whole. Between the crowds, the fashion, and the organized chaos, Paddy realizes he’s officially become “the old guy” marveling at a generation he barely understands. What follows is a comedy of errors featuring confused Uber drivers, gridlocked streets, Big Ten Media Day, bathroom survival tactics at the Hilton, and Paddy’s dad providing colorful commentary to just about everyone they encounter. Back in the suburbs, the mood shifts from chaos to pure joy as Paddy’s son Mike’s River Forest 11U teammates capture the Illinois State Championship, extending an incredible 19 game winning streak. Even though Mike couldn’t play because of his broken thumb, he was right in the middle of the celebration, and Paddy’s wildly over the top reaction to the final strikeout is immediately immortalized on every parent’s phone. Of course, no Hooley episode would be complete without inventing something nobody asked for. This week it’s the Koala Chair, the ultimate elevated seat for sports parents and festival goers alike. Just wait until you see the prototype. Throw in Smashing Pumpkins nostalgia, random celebrity encounters, stories of legendary River Forest pool parties, and the usual Chicago Irish nonsense, and you’ve got another gloriously unhinged hour with the lads.

This week, Paddy, Bill, and Clay prove once again that absolutely no topic is safe. It all starts with dreams of hitting the $700 million lottery, which quickly turns into shopping sprees for luxury watches, ridiculous shoes, and the kind of impulse purchases only a billionaire with zero supervision could justify. Then comes the future. According to the lads, we’re only a few years away from wealthy neighborhoods filling up with cyborg butlers, cyborg nurses, cyborg baseball coaches, and eventually cyborgs so common nobody even notices them anymore. Naturally, they begin planning how to cash in before the robot takeover. Things really go off the rails when ChatGPT helps brainstorm a restaurant concept that somehow evolves into Boners—a completely wholesome (they insist) chicken restaurant named after Mike “Boner” Stabone from Growing Pains. Before long they’re debating velvet booths, a massive oil portrait of Boner on the wall, signature menu items, and whether Enigma’s Return to Innocence should be the only song played in the restaurant from opening until closing. Throw in retirement home adventures, Rockford road trips, AI business ideas, and the usual stream of Chicago Irish nonsense, and you’ve got another hour where the biggest problem facing mankind is whether Boners should have table service or counter ordering.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy, Bill, and Clay somehow turn one innocent golf shirt into a full-scale public relations crisis. Paddy proudly wears his favorite pineapple polo, only to learn that certain pineapples—especially upside-down ones—may be sending invitations he never intended. The lads immediately appoint themselves the FBI’s Fruit Division, debating swinger etiquette, golf course dress codes, and whether Burlington Coat Factory knows something the rest of us don’t. Clay reports back from Dyersville, Iowa, where his son’s baseball team played at the legendary Field of Dreams movie site. Between the cornfields and Kevin Costner nostalgia, the conversation drifts into those wonderfully random moments when sports stars appear out of nowhere. Bill runs into White Sox rookie Braden Montgomery at Navy Pier, Clay remembers bumping into NBA legend (and full-time cult hero) Brian Scalabrine, and after Kyle Schwarber’s appearance in the Home Run Derby, the boys spend an alarming amount of time trying to imagine what Kyle Schwarber’s dad looks like—and whether his first name is legally required to be “Big.” The nonsense keeps rolling as Canadian wildfire smoke makes Chicago look like a scene from Blade Runner, beach parking reaches the GDP of a small nation, and the boys officially declare YouTube the undisputed heavyweight champion of television. It’s another classic hour of Chicago Irish nonsense, sports, pop culture, half-baked theories, and the kind of conversations that somehow begin with a golf shirt and end with Kyle Schwarber’s imaginary family tree.

Summer has officially melted everyone’s brains. This week, Paddy, Bill, and Clay relive a Fourth of July backyard reunion with old grammar school buddies that quickly turns into a nostalgia fest about leaf fires, Zippo lighters, secondhand smoke, and all the things that somehow didn’t kill kids growing up in the ’80s. Paddy gives an update on his son Mike’s broken thumb, which has temporarily ended baseball but launched an impressive career in left-handed basketball and marathon NBA 2K sessions. Meanwhile, Clay gears up for a Field of Dreams tournament, prompting the boys to reminisce about youth sports, road trips, and the beautiful insanity of travel baseball. Then the conversation takes its usual hard left. The lads investigate Lorenzo Lamas’ astonishing six marriages, speculate about Heather Locklear, invent questionable biker gangs, debate whether Mick Jagger is actually immortal, and wonder if Paddy should cash in his vintage Grateful Dead T-shirts before they’re worth more than his retirement account. Throw in White Sox frustrations, World Cup chatter, and enough random pop culture detours to require a GPS, and you’ve got another hour of glorious Hooley nonsense.

This week on the Houl’s Hooley summer is in full swing, and so is the madness. Paddy shares the emotional whiplash of watching his son Mike crush his first over-the-fence home run of the season before ending the tournament with a broken thumb. His daughter Charlotte has returned from her NYU songwriting program with fresh songs, new inspiration, and plenty of New York stories, while the lads somehow convince themselves they belong on the guest list for Taylor Swift’s rumored wedding. From there, it’s classic Hooley chaos. Fourth of July fireworks spark a debate over whether today’s kids could handle the M-80 era, beloved callback Trough restaurant returns with even more questionable menu ideas, Buns restaurant somehow expands its business model, and the boys pitch the unforgettable “Ice Cream Steak” to upscale restaurants everywhere. It’s another gloriously goofy hour of family stories, summer nostalgia, ridiculous inventions, and three Chicago Irish eejits making each other laugh.

Billy is out this week, leaving Paddy and Clay to hold down the fort and immediately launch an investigation into whether Bill’s mysterious illness was actually caused by eating ten egg rolls in one sitting. The “Egg Roll Ghost” quickly becomes the leading suspect, and the show never fully recovers. From there, the boys bounce from summer baseball road trips to Paddy’s latest civic vision: transforming Little League into a full-blown entertainment experience complete with walk-up music, PA announcers, and a mascot named Woody—a talking tree sporting a Fonzie jacket. Somehow this naturally evolves into Paddy’s campaign for mayor, a one-day festival called Paddy Land, and several ideas that would almost certainly require legal representation. The conversation eventually finds its way to Paddy’s daughter Charlotte’s songwriting adventure in New York, where Paddy proudly reflects on watching his daughter chase her dreams, before the lads dive headfirst into alien conspiracies, wondering if extraterrestrials are quietly hiding in a government barn waiting for the right moment to introduce themselves. They wrap things up with World Cup predictions, classic rock, and the usual reminder that no topic is too ridiculous if you’re willing to argue about it long enough.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy, Bill, and Clay welcome a special guest to the bunker: Clay’s 11-year-old son Brody, who confidently predicts a monster football season while somehow sounding like the most composed person in the room. The lads kick things off with the White Sox taking it to the Yankees before immediately becoming armchair general managers, dreaming up trade-deadline deals that would make absolutely no financial sense. Then it’s off to the Little League Home Run Derby, where local slugger “Husky” launches 19 moonshots and Paddy briefly transforms into the Commissioner of Bat Regulations, wondering if anyone bothered to read the rulebook. Along the way, Paddy discovers that being the only sober dad at the ballpark has somehow earned him neighborhood sainthood, Charlotte settles into life at NYU while Paddy relives his own “Freshman F-Up Program” days, and the boys debate the greatest baseball pump-up songs of all time, with Van Halen getting the respect they deserve. The episode closes on a heartfelt note as Paddy pays tribute to Chicago comedy legend Tom Dreesen, remembers one of the true gentlemen of the business, and thanks young Brody for surviving an hour with three middle-aged Irishmen who still think every conversation should end with baseball, classic rock, and questionable life advice.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy, Bill, and Clay reunite after Bill’s successful facial surgery following his infamous golf-ball mishap. He’s recovering well, though he’s developed a newfound appreciation for sour Airheads, Dove ice cream bars, and generally eating like a 12-year-old. Paddy proudly recaps Charlotte’s debut benefit concert, thanking the community for helping support her upcoming NYU Songwriters Workshop adventure. The sentimental moment lasts approximately 30 seconds before the show veers directly into madness. The lads discover the existence of the Pillow Fighting Championships, a real sport airing on ESPN, which somehow inspires an even worse idea: the Underwear Huffing Championships, a completely fictional sporting event that quickly takes on a life of its own. There is also plenty of baseball talk, as Paddy reflects on coaching youth sports and the stress that comes with it. That leads to a passionate pitch for neighborhood Wiffle Ball leagues, which the boys believe could become the next pickleball for middle-aged men. It’s baseball, busted faces, combat pillows, fake sports, and another hour of classic Chicago Irish American nonsense.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, we’re dipping into the vault while Billy continues recovering from his recent facial surgery following his now-infamous encounter with a rocket-shanked golf ball. Rather than leave the airwaves silent, we dusted off one of our favorite episodes: the long-awaited Return of Clay O’Brien. Originally recorded after a mysterious two-year disappearance that may or may not have involved a monastery, witness protection, or simply avoiding Paddy’s phone calls, Clay rejoins Paddy and Billy and immediately picks up right where he left off. The chemistry is instant, the conversation goes sideways almost immediately, and nobody makes a serious effort to stay on topic. The gang covers everything from Paddy’s first year nicotine-free and his aggressively Western Yellowstone-inspired wardrobe to Clay’s liberation from corporate life and the daily struggle of pretending to be a normal professional adult. Along the way they wander through youth baseball politics, workplace nonsense, background checks, hair transplant dreams, and a surprisingly deep dive into Valiant Thor, the alleged alien who supposedly lived at the Pentagon. Add in social media paranoia, St. Patrick’s Day survival strategies, and three middle-aged men trying to make sense of an increasingly ridiculous world, and you’ve got a classic Hooley time capsule. Most importantly, Billy is on the mend and expected back behind the microphone soon. Until then, enjoy this trip back to one of our favorite episodes featuring the triumphant return of the prodigal son, Clay O’Brien.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy, Bill, and Clay dive into the most dramatic Memorial Day weekend since war was invented – starring Bill’s face and a rogue Pinnacle “junk ball.” From a peaceful Little League dad morning to a full-on Lee Harvey Golf Ball situation, Bill walks us through the moment a rocket shank turned his orbital bone into modern art, the ER adventure, and how five facial fractures have him rethinking cigarettes, gratitude, and life itself. Clay unveils his new Celtic Club garage boxing gym – a full-on Irish Rocky IV setup with bags, weights, a rowing machine, and enough testosterone to power a small village. Paddy, meanwhile, is twisting knobs and dipping straws as he preps for Lottie and The Drama’s big neighborhood debut and NYU fundraiser at Roberts Westside, hustling the Zeffy link and accidentally becoming his daughter’s de facto manager (while still advising her to become an electrician). Along the way, the lads spin off into golf PSAs, talking sports balls, Coffee Boy: The Musical, war-smoking etiquette, and the eternal comfort of lighting a smoke after you’ve just cheated death – even if it’s the wake-up call that finally gets you to quit.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy, Bill, and Clay return to the WSBC bunker for another late-night spiral into baseball paranoia, celebrity weirdness, and the terrifying possibility that Paddy is slowly becoming Robert De Niro in The Fan. Things kick off with Paddy admitting he may be taking his son’s baseball season a little too seriously after chirping umpires over balk calls and borderline strike zones like a man trying to save the franchise. The lads compare modern travel baseball parents to movie villains while Paddy debates whether he needs to step back emotionally or simply buy darker sunglasses and a folding chair closer to the action. From there, the conversation drifts into the Crosstown Classic, the death of Schlitz beer, Sox fan tattoos, and the strange ecosystem of Chicago sports crowds, before taking an unexpectedly heartfelt turn as Paddy reflects on his daughter Charlotte’s upcoming benefit concert and the difficult art of loosening the parental death grip as your kids get older. Naturally, any emotional growth lasts about four minutes before the show completely derails into Michael Jackson, Bubbles the chimp, Mike Tyson’s tiger, and a fully serious debate over whether it would be worse to fight a chimpanzee or a tiger in hand-to-hand combat. Clay pitches an AI-generated pay-per-view animal fight league, Paddy becomes convinced chimpanzees are tiny hairy assassins, and the group somehow invents an Instagram chimp influencer named “Chucky” driving around Dubai in Jordans. They wrap with mall walker movie ideas, celebrity impressions, Memorial Day shoutouts, and the general agreement that the world has become deeply weird but probably always was.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy, Bill, and Clay return with another episode that somehow begins at White Sox Emo Night and ends in baseball-related bodily harm. Paddy takes Charlotte to Guaranteed Rate Field as her School of Rock crew performs a full emo set, while Grandpa Houli spends the evening looking like a man patiently waiting for The Rolling Stones to take the stage. The conversation quickly spirals into black hot dogs, Pete Wentz, and the very real possibility that the White Sox should stop fighting it and fully embrace a future “Dracula Night.”Things get stranger when Paddy becomes distracted by an Oak Park dad who spent an entire School of Rock performance slowly scratching his wife’s back in hypnotic circular motions. Not a quick scratch. Not an itch. A full commitment. Naturally, the lads launch a completely unnecessary investigation into whether this was affection, territorial behavior, or some advanced marital signaling system. Meanwhile, Bill checks in with stories from the world of brand activations and uncomfortable encounters with mustachioed weirdos, while the crew pays tribute to the late Donald Gibb of Revenge of the Nerds and Bloodsport fame. The show wraps with Paddy taking a vicious breaking ball directly off the knee while warming up a pitcher with no gear on, proving once again that Little League may actually be more dangerous for middle-aged coaches than the kids.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley Radio Hour, the lads are back in the studio with plenty to talk about and absolutely nothing under control. Paddy’s buzzing about a $750,000 lottery win in Oak Park while Bill’s just trying to remember where he left his coffee. The conversation quickly spirals into Film Festival fever as Paddy preps for the big weekend, juggling filmmaker pickups, family drop-offs, and the eternal mission to make everyone feel welcome at The Irish American Movie Hooley. Producer Sarah Hand gets a well-earned shoutout for keeping the whole circus running. Of course, Paddy can’t resist sharing a fresh Mike Houlihan driving story. This one features a WGN parking garage, a few tight turns, and an unexpected run-in with Chicago Bears legend Dan Hampton. There’s also a lively debate about School of Rock, parenting, and the mythic Marquette University figure known only as Big Pants Andy—a man whose legend looms larger than his jeans. It’s another classic mix of Chicago nostalgia, family banter, and pub-style punchlines that only the Houli bros. can deliver.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy and Bill dive headfirst into the circus of pop culture, starting with the redemption arc of none other than Charlie Sheen. Is “Clean Sheen” the Hollywood comeback story we didn’t know we needed, or do we secretly miss the “Tiger Blood” era? The lads hash it out with their usual flair. From there, it’s onto Zuckerberg’s $799 smart glasses, part sci-fi, part fashion faux pas, and the boys brainstorm whether these gizmos could double as “sober enhancement” specs. Imagine a world where last call gets a little less blurry? The conversation takes a personal turn as Paddy shares updates on his daughter Charlotte’s School of Rock journey, her spot on the performance team, and the rollercoaster ride of getting her debut album finished. It’s a crash course in showbiz hustle, teenage producers, and why every artist needs to stay sharp on the business side. Of course, Chicago sports aren’t spared. The Bears’ stumble against the Lions gets roasted, the Cubs’ playoff push brings cautious optimism, and the White Sox’s woes spark a fresh round of grumbling about management. Add in a sprinkle of showbiz nostalgia, some laughs at social media’s expense, and plenty of Houli hijinks, and you’ve got a full plate of laughs and insights to kill an hour of your day. Enjoy!

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy and Bill kick things off with a quick riff on the shocking Charlie Kirk assassination before quickly steering back into their natural habitat of chaos and comedy. From doomsday rapture theories and South African pastor prophecies to Bears banter and karaoke confessions, the lads tackle life’s big questions: Will the apocalypse interrupt the Irish American Movie Hooley Film Festival? What’s the most embarrassing song to get raptured mid-verse? And can pizza survive the end of days? In true Hooley fashion, they pepper in absurd business ideas, wild Ghostbusters quotes, and plenty of Chicago-flavored nonsense all while hyping up the Hooley Film Festival (Sept 26–28 at the Wilmette Theatre) with King Frankie, Dead Man’s Money, and Fire Department, Inc. on the marquee.

This week on The Houli’s Hooley, Paddy and Bill are in rare form, unleashing a silly storm of rants, riffs, and ridiculousness. The lads daydream about hitting the Powerball jackpot, debate whether Charlie Sheen deserves a starring role in their imaginary lotto movie, and trade war stories from the trenches of customer service hell. Paddy vents about corporate zombies who never reply to emails, while Bill unravels the mysteries of candy economics and why plastic gag gifts might just be the future of American commerce. And just when you think it couldn’t get any zanier, a Five Below showdown involving an immovable human roadblock proves that no shopping trip is too small to become comedy gold. It’s fast, it’s loose, and it’s peak Hooley, where everyday nonsense gets twisted into hilarity.

The Houli bros. are back and the summer chaos continues! On this week’s Houli’s Hooley, Paddy and Bill dish out stories from their family getaway in Grand Beach, Michigan—complete with sandy kids, questionable grilling techniques, and the eternal struggle of church pews versus human knees. (Spoiler: the pews won.) Between Paddy’s daughter Charlotte’s “British Invasion” rehearsals, or his son Mike’s new back-to-school fashion statement, and a never-ending battle with iPads in the backseat, the lads paint a picture of family life that’s equal parts sitcom and survival test. And just when things couldn’t get any weirder, Paddy shares his bizarre run-in with a mystery Chinese woman, WhatsApp messages, suspicious phone calls, and maybe even international espionage? Or maybe just a phishing scam… you decide. The brothers also dive headfirst into the strange and glorious world of mukbangs (yes, people eating mountains of food on YouTube), revisit their legendary barber Dino Dini’s haircuts, and debate whether the “broccoli cut” is a crime against style or a rite of passage.

The lads also cook up a pitch for AI Anthony, the world’s first artificially intelligent gangster who is equal parts muscle, motherboard, and mama’s boy. In between these wild ideas, Paddy shares the joys and anxieties of his daughter turning 16, from concert nights to the fine art of letting go. Paddy and Bill Houlihan step into the studio fresh off an unforgettable summer of Little League action, as Paddy shares the thrilling journey of his son’s River Forest team making it all the way to the Illinois State Championship. As an assistant coach, Paddy offers an inside look at the highs, lows, and hilarious moments from the dugout, like nearly blowing a 13 to 3 lead against Moline before locking down the 13 to 11 win, thanks in part to a clutch relief performance from young Mikey Houlihan. They break down the strategy behind pitch counts, pool play, and managing pint-sized pitchers under pressure. The season ends with a hard-fought loss to Hinsdale in the championship game, but not before a run filled with grit, growth, and memories that’ll last longer than the team’s sunflower seed supply. The lads also take a playful turn into the world of AI, pondering which jobs are safe, which are doomed, and whether robots can call balls and strikes without getting heckled.
