"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Be Amazed" as we join the women who show up at the tomb of Jesus expecting to grieve but are met with astounding news- Christ is Risen! Have you ver heard something that seemed too big to take in even when it was good news? Or maybe a burden was rolled away and it seems too good to be true. Or maybe like Peter there is a place where you wish you could have a "re-do." Wherever you have been or hope to be amazed, Jesus' story with us continues. Let's keep learning and rejoicing together!
Our in person Bible study at Grace resumes on APRIL 3RD and stay tuned for another podcast series in the fall for Advent.
Today's Scripture: Mark 16:1-8
Today's Music:
"Jesus Christ Is Risen Today"- Thomas Keesecker's setting of Jesus Christ is Risen Today, from Easter Hope, was recorded with Adam H. Smith on piano for worship use for Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Copyright (c) 2020 Birnamwood Publications (ASCAP), a division of MorningStar Music Publishers. "Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Give Ourselves Away." The woman in Bethany honored Jesus by anointing him. It demonstrated she really knew who Jesus was. She gave everything she had to him- including her heart. How is Jesus helping you give yourself away?
Today's scripture: Mark 14:1-9

"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to See." We are not given the gospel, God’s good news, as a way to avoid mortality or loss. Jesus is predicting his own death, which is overwhelming to consider, but Jesus also challenges us to ask: Are there ways we love our life so much we fail to see the harm it does to others? Are there ways in which we should let our way “die” so something new can come to life? Where do we need to see Jesus?
Today's scripture: John 12:20-26
Today's music:
"Air Andante," a public domain 'air' part of a Baroque-era collection called "Select Aires or Duets for 2 German Flutes and a German Flute and Bass by Handel and other authors," published during their lifetime by John Walsh. www.imslp.org. Laurel Sanders, flute.
"Moonlight Sonata," public domain by Ludwig van Beethoven. Laura Pauley, piano.

"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Love." Nicodemus was one of the religious leaders of his day. At this point in his story, he wasn’t a follower of Jesus – that would’ve been a very risky thing for him to do. And so under cover of night he came to visit Jesus and asked questions that probed at the scope and depth of God’s love. Listen to how Jesus responded with love.
Today's scripture: John 3:14-21
Today's music: Public domain version of the second movement (Adagio) of C.P.E. Bach's Sonata in a minor for solo flute, available from IMSLP at www.imslp.org. Laurel Sanders, flute.

"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Focus." Jesus is telling people their way of living has lost focus. We too have ways we need God to restore us, but change is hard even when we know we need it. Even in these times, we can count on Jesus to cts out of mercy for our world.
Today's scripture: John 2:13-22

"Learning To... " is led by Pastor Carolyn Hetrick and Pastor Scott Schul of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA. Each week features breath prayer, a passage from scripture, music and reflection before sending you out with grace. Today we are "Learning to Rethink." Jesus tells his followers that everything they thought was wrong. He will face rejection and they will face struggles too. The savior we receive is hardly like popular figures in our world. Can we rethink who Jesus is and what it means to follow even when the changes we face are hard, unpopular or inconvenient? We know that love carries Jesus into our midst in these times.

Breath and life go hand in hand. Taking a moment to catch our breathe and breathe with God's sacred rhythms invites us to step away from where are racing and breathe deeply as we are reminded that throughout Scripture, God breathes and speaks life from the dawn of creation, through the prophets and through Jesus, our long awaited. Emmanuel. We hear Zechariah's breath in a restored voice proclaim good news. How do we capture the sacred nature of these weeks we call Advent, to reflect, make space and prepare our hearts and selves to be placed into God's story? This week Mary travels to see Elizabeth as they are both awaiting births. It is a time of waiting, between what has been and what is yet to be. How do we wait? We invite you to step away from what is filling our lives, yet unfinished to allow God to speak. Where do you need God to meet you, to send someone to wait with you? Who might God send you to be with? May our questions become holy conversations and invitations into hope.

In these weeks leading up to Christmas, our lives can feel so full we perhaps hope and pray no one asks us to make room for one more thing. How do we capture the sacred nature of these weeks we call Advent, to reflect, make space and prepare our hearts and selves to be placed into God's story? Mary hears she is chosen to bear Jesus in to the world, to make room for new life. We invite you to step away from what is taking up all the space in your life. As we remember Christ' birth, we breathe, and make room for Christ, so we can join in God's possibility and encounter God's presence now and hope for the future.

Pastor Carolyn Hetrick of Grace Lutheran Church, State College PA Is joined by Rev. Lois Martin for this final episode in exploring the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. Our conversation cerera on self control, or as the Message translation would describe it, the ability to direct our energies wisely. How do we know what to do, or not do and when and how do we listen to what God is up to in the Spirit’s presence among us?
Pastor Carolyn Hetrick of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, Pa continues a series on the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23 and how Scripture applies our faith in life. Today we focus upon joy, or "Exuberance About Life" as the Message translation frames it. This is more than happiness that we seek. In fact, the joy ,or exuberance that is a gift of the Holy Spirit, comes to us from God who brings it into our lives. Our guest today is Rev. Kevin Shock, Assistant to the Bishop and Director for Evangelical Mission for the Allegheny Synod of the ELCA, who derives great joy from animals, conversations about God's possibility, and kayaking.
Today's music is "Joyful Scottish Dances" played by Laurel Sanders, flute.
Pastor Carolyn Hetrick of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, Pa continues a series on the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23 and how Scripture applies our faith in life. Today we focus upon compassion of heart and our starting point is compassion for one's self, imagining we are in the compassionate gaze of God. When is the last time you spent time with God in that gaze and assurance? How might tending our own inner life help us to pour out that fruit of compassion for others?
Today's music is "What Wondrous Love is This?" Arranged by Judy Nishimura and played by Laurel Sanders, flute.
Pastor Carolyn Hetrick of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, Pa continues a series on the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23 and how Scripture applies our faith in life. Today the guests are Elizabeth Siegelman and Tierra Williams, the Facilitator Coordinator and Outreach Coordinator for Centre County Community Conferencing, a restorative justice program providing Centre County residents with a space and process to transform their conflicts into cooperation through open dialogue. CCCC partners with law enforcement and the legal system to empower people to resolve their conflicts through mutual collaboration.
From a faith perspective this work is transformational and empowered by the Holy Spirit to create more possibility than we may at first see.

A native of Finland, Kirsi is a Lutheran theologian engaged in critical and compassionate examination of the relevance of Luther's freedom theology for the contemporary world. She has broad interests in the Reformation scholarship and with the sources in Christian theology. Her book Women and the Reformation (Wiley 2008) broke new ground by bringing women's theological voices to the conversation. In her Luther scholarship, she has focused on theology of faith and sacraments, and critical uprooting of antisemitism in Christian argumentation. The Annotated Luther, Vol. I-VI (Fortress, 2015-2017) was a major undertaking that saw its completion in the Reformation anniversary year. In 2021 she published Lutheran Theology: A Grammar of Faith (Bloomsbury/T&T Clark) for classroom use.
Pastor Carolyn Hetrick of Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA begins a series on the fruits of the Spirit inspired by Galatians 5:22-23. Each week, we'll explore how one of the fruits of the Spirit given to help us live the love of Christ together is seen in everyday faith.
This Week: Pastor Carolyn is joined by the Rev. Aaron Decker, (he/him) a Theological Educator in Bolivia with ELCA Service and Justice (Global Mission). He has passions for world languages, textual ambiguity, and education as liberation. He lives with his cat, Moses; like in Exodus, Aaron might talk more, but Moses is definitely in charge.
We talk about what it means to be church today especially in the midst of great struggle and suffering, but being church for the sake of the other.

The Easter story is about Jesus showing up to those struggling with hope, and those who had come through a traumatic time, the time we call Holy Week. How does Jesus show up today for us? In the woods, in Scripture, maybe even in chicken nuggets and s'mores and hikes. Pastor Carolyn Hetrick, of Grace Lutheran Church, State College and Pastor Nathan Pile, Executive Director of Camp Sequanota talk about the resurrection story of Easter in Luke, and how those earliest believers took different paths growing in faith just like we do; how much we need each other in community, where we are finding hope and how God is shaping us as people of faith in this time.

How is the flame of faith in your life these days? Is it feeling doused by the stresses and challenges of our time? The letter to the Ephesians was written to offer hope and encouragement and reassurance in being a community of believers, grounded in the good news of Jesus amidst challenging times. We have been living in traumatic times, that have tested all of our relationships and sense of identity. Christ wants to draw us together, but how? Today we talk about trauma, our brains and what God is up to to sustain us.

Today's closing music is "Lift Every Voice and Sing" first written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson, set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson and one of the most cherished songs of the African American Civil Rights Movement. it was first performed by 500 schoolchildren for President Lincoln's birthday in 1900 in Jacksonville Florida. It is performed by Reginald R. Robinson on his album, Euphonic Sounds:
Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand.
True to our God,
True to our native land.
