Hello everyone welcome to episode 6 of the Dojo Go Homeschool podcast, I’m your host Taylor Kelley and in this video today we are going to talk about bullies and why kids get bullied and why they bully.
Growing up as a kid, my parents put me into martial arts because I was bullied. I was socially awkard and would often over-react to things that happened. As a result, kids thought it was fun to poke fun of me or even push me around because of how I reacted.
So that’s the key thing here is being responsive rather than reactive.
So how do we teach our kids to become responsive? Let me tell you a quick story when I was a kid. So doing martial arts growing up, I had a rival who would end up becoming a friend who my instructor and I would put us together to spar....

Does your kid have a hard time speaking up?
When it comes to self defense from a full grown adult, this is absolutely detrimental to escaping an abduction.
Here's how one of my students, Nixon, escaped 2 very dangerous situations.

Hello everybody! This is Taylor Kelley creator of Dojo Go and in today’s podcast episode we are going to talk about one of the most common issues homeschool families face which is dealing with a friend, or family member, or maybe even a spouse that does not support the idea of homeschooling.
Talking with a lot of homeschool parents, one of problems you might be facing are having 2 conflicting ideas in the household. You’re worried that this might confuse your kids and that can lead to a bunch of problems and self-doubt.
So before I get into how you should respond to these people I want you to know a few things.
1) You are not alone. I would argue that these conversations have been brought up at least a dozen times by parents starting to homeschool
2) Whenever someone does something outside the norm, people tend to cling to what they know.
So now that you know these two things, here are 3 things I would do in this situation:
1) Understanding your why super well. Make a list of the reasons, with rational and compare it to how things were before. If your kids were bullied in public school, didn’t get good grades, and had a hard time being able to make friends, then you can argue that homeschooling will prevent bullying, your kids can learn how they learn, and they can join co-ops or other groups that are catered to kids who are interested in the same things.
2) Learn to smile and keep going
You may have heard the term “haters gonna hate” and it is definitely true with homeschooling. To be blunt, people will cling to certain believes no matter what you say because people have a bais. You can’t save everyone, and if you learn to listen but not take it to heart it will help you stay on your path.
3) Seek a community of like-minded people.
Joining Facebook groups, co-op, or even being part of our online martial arts program (shameless plug) can surround you and your family with people who are dealing with the same struggles of homeschooling as you. Success comes from 2 places, the people you surround yourself with and the thoughts that occupy your mind. So if you can surround yourself with positive, homeschooling parents just like you, by osmosis effect you will get better feeling about it.
Now if you’re somebody new to homeschooling, one of the most common questions you might ask is “where do I start?” What kind of curriculum should I use?”
While I can’t answer for reading, math, science or other subjects like that, I can tell you that MOST homeschool parent’s forget P.E! So if you’re interested in a P.E class for your kids, be sure to check out our 6 week beginner online virtual kids martial arts course. Welcome to the very first episode of Dojo Go!
Excerpt:
Hi Welcome to the very first episode of the Dojo Go Podcast!
My name is Taylor Kelley the creator of Dojo Go and in today’s episode I’m going to give you all
Basically my background a little bit why we created this online homeschool martial arts site.
So I’ve been doing martial arts for over 15 years now and teaching since 2012 and during that time I have helped 100s of kids boost their confidence, get better grades, establish solid routines, and become more focused and disciplined. I have a physical location called Functional Taekwondo in Grand prairie Texas and that school has been since 2017.
As a child growing up as many of my students know I was homeschooled. My parents took me out of public school because, well, I had not only dealt with some pretty bad bullying but also it was because I was a “different” kind of kid. I didn’t learn the way others did and my mother recognized that. I also grew up in a very religious home and my faith was sometimes getting very tested at public school.
Now, I want to make a big disclaimer before I keep going, the curriculum you see on the site, while they do have universal principles of being a good person, I do not teach religion in my programs so if you’re concerned that anything like that is in there no worries that’s not my place.
Anyways, while I was being homeschooled I also took martial arts lessons and ever since I was 5 years old I enjoyed teaching. My parent’s even told me that I loved teaching others so much that I started leading classes when I was only 7. And by leading I mean something really small like a warm up, but it was a start!
I was a very shy kid, and martial arts greatly impacted my speaking ability, how I did in school, and improved my life in so many ways.
When I started teaching full time and running my own school and programs for several academies, I had met many homeschool families that wanted to do martial arts. A few of the big problems homeschool families had were that the pricing of classes got too expensive, it was very difficult to load everyone in the car to attend classes regularly, especially those with big families you can relate, and also it’s very rare to find homeschool programs especially those with a convenient schedule and affordable rates.
So taking what I know about boosting kids confidence, establishing fitness routines, and getting children to focus with many many proven methods I’ve used for 10+ years, I created Dojo Go, which is what you see today!
In the future I will be uploading more podcasts talking about specific problems and solutions that most homeschool families have as well as other useful info that you can apply to your child’s learning experience at home.
