This mix is my ode to Vaughn Benjamin, the lead singer of the band Midnite, and later Akae Beka. To me Vaughn is a remix to the countless freedom fighters we’ve had throughout the many years. Vaughn’s’ dedication to his craft, his humbleness and the messages he put in his songs is why he will always be loved. He will be placed amongst the all time greats of reggae music. I give thanks for all that he has done in his short life. He’s left us with an enormous catalogue, a huge chunk of it I’m not familiar with yet. The Ride or Die Project is a multi-platform exploration inspired by women who live by a ride-or-die philosophy.

This mixtape* was inspired by one of those platforms, the play OTHER SIDE OF THE GAME by Amanda Parris.

OTHER SIDE OF THE GAME is a meeting place between the urgent activism of the 1970’s and today’s unapologetic Hip Hop generation. At this meeting place we find the stories of women. Women who organize communities, protect loved one’s and battle institutions, living each day by a ride-or-die philosophy. The play explores the stories of several women as they sit in the waiting room of the Don Jail; hovering in the limbo between freedom and imprisonment. Feb 6th, 2015, marks the 70th year since we’ve been blessed with the lovely energy of Robert Nesta Marley.

To make things more interesting, Bob Marley was born in the same year as my mother and passed away when he was 36 years of age, the same age I am right now.

This is beautiful to take is, as I look at all that he was able to accomplish over his short time on this earth. We are continually blessed with his wisdom and love every time we listen to his songs. As I was making this mix, I've said many times 'Thank you Bob for blessing us with these gems that never seem to get old.'

I've listened to a lot of his interviews he's had and you can see that this was not a regular man, he was truly a saint, and angel, a god send to spread the positive energy that this world truly needs. He was the bridge between black and white, and he always brought his message of love & unity.

To put it simple, I would be a different person. I remember many nights at the university of Western Ontario chilling with my good friends Steve or Matthew dealing with some good food, and taking in the biggest Roots Rock Reggae artist Sizzla Kalonji for hours and hours, no movies or tv, just reggae music, and most of the time it was Kalonji. It seemed like every day Sizzla had a new track or full album to take in. This experience lit my love for reggae music… and this flame burns more and more every day, because this music is not just music, its culture.

The Ride or Die Project is about storytelling. Utilizing the mediums of theatre and film we are embarking on a research-informed process into the under-documented narratives of women Hip Hop culture has dubbed "ride or die."
