Andrea Smith

Welcome to West Church LKN! A message from Rev. Dr. Andrea Smith: West is a group of people that worship together, online or at Lake Norman High School, Mooresville, NC. 9 AM online service on Sundays, 10 AM in-person. If you come to West on a Sunday morning, you’ll find folks dressed in shorts and tee-shirts or athletic apparel, some coming straight from their soccer game. In winter, a pair of jeans and sweatshirt is common. At West, “all” means all people are welcome, and we actually live out that core value. West is an inclusive, safe community and we are not ashamed to say that. We believe in being real and relevant. We want to meet you where you are in your life. You’re not going to hear that there are absolutes — all questions and all pathways of exploration are welcome. We practice what we understand to be the Jesus way, which is radical love and acceptance. We encourage you to ask questions and wrestle with what we say on a Sunday morning. We don’t invest a lot of money in facilities. We worship at Lake Norman High School through an amazing partnership with the Iredell School System and have a strong online community. By not having a dedicated building, we can invest our money in community missions. Major missions: Support a sister church and orphanage in Uganda. Produce an annual Back to School Bash, where 1,200 disadvantaged students receive shoes, clothing, and supplies so they’re ready for success in school. Ding Dong Ditch Christmas MissionVisit www.headingwest.org for more information and to receive a free gift. I would love to hear from you. I’d love to know what questions you have about West. Email me or text 704-928-6083. Rev. Dr. Andrea Smith Pastor at West Church LKN info@headingwest.org

Ever feel like you need a little hope? Do you find it hard to find that hope?
Hope is achieved by remembering promises. Promises that we aren’t alone, we don’t have to be afraid, that we are engulfed in a Love so powerful, so all-encompassing, it never dies.
Despite whatever crap life throws at us, we can always have hope. In this message series we will explore how historical promises display hope.

Our new Deconstructing Religion worship series looks at what is at the root of who we are and what we believe. Over the years we were taught to believe certain things. In today’s society, people are starting to turn away from what they have always been taught and told about religion. As a Christian community we are going to look at some of the things we have been taught and examine difficult passages in Holy Scripture and see what they really mean and really say to us.

Did you know that there are more Self Storage Facilities (businesses, not only individual units) than there are McDonald's in the United States? The Self Storage industry also brings in $20 Billion MORE per year than McDonald's...that's wild!

In this sermon, Lexi Hernandez encourages us to look at greed through the lens of letting go. In what ways can we show greed that are outside money and possessions? Have you ever considered that we may be greedy about our time, our expectations of ourselves/others, within our relationships, etc.? It's not an easy pill to swallow, but is well worth the evaluation!

Explore this concept with us through this sermon.

Let us know what you think about this perspective in the comments!

How many of the 10 commandments do you know off the top of your head? Have you ever lived in fear of breaking those commandments, thinking God was out to get you if you had? Join us this week, for a special Mother's Day Sermon about selfless love.

Jesus always aired on the side of "loving the people". When we go into the world and be "love" to and for others, we not only change ourselves, but we have the opportunity to bring about change in the world.

Ponder the question “Would you date you?” We are going to explore that question in the context of our own self-image. We hope you come away with a healthy introspection about yourself. The “Would You Date You” message series hopes to create a new understanding of who we are and how we are wired. We will tie psychology, spirituality, and Christianity all together using a study by Carl Yung and New Testament scripture.

Are you willing to move today? Or do you have something that you are clinging to that keeps you stuck where you are?

40% of our actions are our habits, we don't even know we are doing them.

Habits have a powerful impact on our lives. What are your positive habits?

What are habits you have that cause harm to you or others?

Our habits are driven by what we crave and the reward we receive from the actions we take to fulfill that craving.

For our bad habits, the difficult part is not just "kicking the habit" but instead figuring out what we TRULY crave that is causing the habit.

Here is an example - for smokers, it is not just about craving nicotine (although research has shown that it is a highly addictive substance). If that were the case, people would be able to quit smoking by using the patch or nicotine gum. Research has shown that only about 10% of smokers can stop the habit of smoking by using other means of receiving nicotine. Instead, it is about something more. Like connecting with others, going to a public area where you can smoke typically puts you in contact with other people, and that is often what people are craving, community, conversation, and togetherness. (Note this is just an example).

Aristotle puts it this way, "We are what we repeatedly do."

If that is the case, then what are you? What do you repeatedly do?

There are different components to the habits that we have:

Cue: the trigger that kicks off the habitual behavior. Cues that prompt routine behaviors, or habits, vary widely. They can take a lot of different forms. The Routine: the action that we have that works to fulfill that craving often it is our automatic actions The Reward is whatever the behavior (or routine) does for you.
We only do that which gives us rewards. Think about babies . . . they, as they age, develop habits. They cry for what they need, we give them what they need, and they learn that crying helps them fulfill their needs. Thus, crying becomes a reward. As they age and develop, we teach them new ways of receiving what they need instead of relying on negative behavior.

We can break our habits by having new behaviors/routines to fulfill our reward. In doing so, we must rely on our willpower.

But it is important to know, we have a limited amount of willpower every day!

Once we've used up our willpower, that is when it is more difficult to withstand the bad habits.

As people of faith, we are given actions as outlined by the Apostle Paul relying on the teachings of Jesus, that allow us to develop positive habits.

Points from Romans 12:

Love from the center of who you are - no faking!

If it doesn't lead to love (if it is evil) - run from it, cling to that which is good.

No cursing under your breath!

Get along with others, don't be stuck up!

Make friends with people because of who they are, not what they can get you! Don't be "the great somebody!"

Don't hit back, instead discover the beauty in everyone!

Don't try to get even!

Bless your enemies! Get the best of evil by doing good!

The difference between who you want to be and who you are is what you do." - Charles Duhigg

What do you do?

As a church, our "habit" is loving others beyond ourselves. It is why we do what we do, like lead the Back to School Bash, a community event that empowers students to start school with the necessary school supplies, clothes, etc. while attending a fun, festival-like experience.

What habits do you have? Are your habits those that lead to good and lead to love?

The promise Jesus gave to his followers before he was arrested and ultimately killed was that he would “be with them always”. That presence is offered to all people, it is also known as the Spirit. There is no magic prayer, no statement that we must “say” to experience this presence. The key to this presence lies within all things. May this key be a reminder that there is no door, no rule, no religion that can keep you from experiencing the presence of God.

Christians have said “Jesus is the way” for centuries. It is based on the verse, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” -John 14:6. This is one of the most misunderstood and misused phrases of Jesus, ever! It is used to keep people “out” of faith instead of providing pathways “in.” May the maze and puzzle help us remember that Jesus provides us an individual relationship and pathway to life. Faith is a puzzle, but one we solve as steps in a journey, not a magic phrase.

Have you ever been excluded from an invitation that others in your “circle” received? How did that make you feel?

If God is a God of infinite love, if God is Love, how would or could God be an exclusionary God and still be a God of Love?

The word “Savior” only appears twice in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to describe Jesus.
Why is it such a predominant focus of Western Christianity?

We project our human propensities onto God. Humans function in such a “guilt based system.” Living in a world where everything is right or wrong, good or bad, and we judge things and people. Thus, we believe that's the nature of God.
Why would humans want a savior that leads out of a guilt based system?

As our knowledge of Jesus grows, we learn to see his life and teachings with new perspectives. New light of many different hues and shades is shed on his teachings and the lessons we apply to our lives. We experience new freedom as we learn to see the different shades of Divine Love.

Of the approximate 90 times Jesus is addressed directly in the New Testament, roughly 60 refer to him as “teacher,” “rabbi,” “great one,” or “master” (like a “schoolmaster”). What do those terms mean?

When it was originally written, the word “Rabbi” did NOT mean “Jewish clergyperson”. Nor did that term appear in the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament). It was JUST coming into existence as a term for use during Jesus’ time.

It meant “one who bore spiritual authority”. To be a rabbi in the first century meant to be a teacher who was crafting a new approach to Hebrew texts, traditions, and interpretations. And as a rabbi, Jesus was a radical revolutionary. He challenged their norms.

Teachers have “rules” that they live by. Jesus was no different.
But Jesus’ rules were all about one thing - Love.
Love God, Love Yourself, and Love Others.
Love makes room for more love.

  • What religious rules are not grounded in love?
  • Why might those rules be a barrier to God instead of a pathway?

Jesus did not issue a list of rules to be checked off a “list”. Instead, he embodied the rule of love as a way of life to be followed. Instead of telling us what to “do and not do,” he asked us to be Love as he was Love.

  • What is a religious rule you wish didn’t exist?
  • What is your favorite “rule” that Jesus broke as he loved all people?
  • How might you embody that rule in your own life?

Join West Church LKN for our message series “The Karens and Chads”!

We all encounter mean people in our lives. They have no regard for your feelings, they target your areas of vulnerability, and they use their influence to persuade others to be against you.

If we aren’t careful, mean people will consume us.

The first aid for “bad blood” is empathy! Walk in their shoes to try to see their perspective on the situation. Empathy helps us see things that otherwise aren’t seen, turns our anger into compassion, and helps heal our hurt.

Continuing our message series on prayer, this week we focus on asking God for help in prayer.

Prayer is a powerful opportunity we each have to give thanks, ask for help, and to connect to the Love that holds all the chaos, the joy, AND the difficulties together.

Prayer is as close for us as the very breaths we take . . .

It simply involves our actually being mindful of those breaths. As soon as we are, we are journeying into a prayer life that can be transformational!

There are no neutral words.

Words shape things that come into being . . .

The Christian scriptures tell us the universe began with a word. God spoke, and it came into being. (There is science in all this, by the way. But that is another message for a different day!)

We have the power to bless, to curse and to shape the lives of the people around us all with the power of the spoken or written word.

The question becomes then, what kind of relationships and what kind of world are we creating with the words we are speaking?

This Sunday I had planned for us to dive into the strengths and weaknesses of our temperaments. But we are going to pause on that for a week and talk about the power of our words in the culture we find ourselves in right now - this very minute!

Now is the time that our words matter so much!

Are we using them to help and heal, bring life to people and positive situations or are we using them to wound, fill the space with anger, harm, and hate.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday! Until then . . . may we use our words to be a people of and bring about a space and culture of peace.

Hear the personal testimony of West Church Staff member Dawn Lynch and how God has led her out of life's darkest moments.

Her story is an inspiration to us all. From the divorce of her parents to her own struggles to leave an abusive marriage with her four children, to the death of the man she credits with teaching her what love is, this is a moving Christian faith message. If you are struggling, we hope this helps you find strength and hope and realize God is present, even in the darkness. Subscribe to our channel for more.

Pastor Smith relates in the video: "Sometimes I think we feel guilty if we're not the perfect Christian or perfect follower of Jesus, but Jesus wrestled with feeling far from God, so I think if Jesus can wrestle with it, we can too. And I think that's such a powerful part of your story that you did feel not okay and not in love with God, and your journey through that, and here you are this leader of people in faith."

On prayer:
One of the things we can learn from Dawn is about the power of prayer. Dawn surrendered herself to her pain and her anxiety and worry, and just threw up her hands or physically fell to her knees in a posture of prayer, and said, all right God, here I am. I hope you heard what she said that in those moments of absolute brokenness: "you felt this warmth just sustain you." Please don't ever underestimate the power of prayer, both in self-surrender, but also in praying for each other. There is something that happens in the universe that when we pray for one another, energy surrounds them and lifts them up when they need it. It's a real thing. We don't have to understand it, but it is very real, so please don't ever underestimate when someone tells you they're praying for you or praying for each other. It really does make a difference

11:55 -- When have you felt far from God?
15:50 -- Where have you seen God, even in difficult times?
17:55 – God at work: Leaving an unsafe relationship; growing spiritually
How serving the church provides purpose and meaning
21:00 -- Jesus wrestled with feeling far from God; we can too
22:00 -- Was there a turning point that you remember realizing you needed God?
25:00 -- Don’t underestimate the power of prayer. We don't have to understand it, but it is very real.
28:00 -- The challenge of starting over as a single mom with four kids
33:00 – God’s ironic sense of timing
PTSD diagnosis after divorce: Healing from the trauma with EMDR
36:00 -- Dawn’s journey into employment in ministry

When have you felt far from God?
Dawn: When you first told me that this would be one of the questions, I thought, “You know, God's always been with me. I haven't felt far from God.” But then I started to think about it and I'm like, wow, the list just grew longer and longer, but actually I discovered that it was my pain and my anger from my pain that really prevented me from being able to see how God was already at work in my previous situations.

I had wonderful parents and a beautiful childhood, for whatever reasons, my parents separated and divorced, and that brought pain to me early on as a child. Then I married at a very young age of 21, and my husband battled with anger, which led to addiction and an abusive personality. So there was a lot of pain in that marriage and that time together. Then just when things felt like they were finally starting to come back together after the brokenness of my marriage, I fell in love with this wonderful man who truly showed me what love should feel like and look like through his example. Then he was tragically killed in a boating accident, so that just really left me feeling lonely and sad and afraid and somewhat unworthy of happiness.

Thanksgiving message for 2020.

An attitude of Gratitude: Our spiritual lives resting at the kiddie table.

A lifetime of Gratefulness! Move to the adult table where life can get messy and difficult.

ACTION: Grow deeper in gratitude!

Keep our eyes focused on God to move from an attitude of gratitude to a lifetime of gratefulness.

Words to hold onto: The Lord is my Shepard and I shall not want. He makes me lay down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters, he restores my soul. He leads me in the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me and for me in the presence of my enemies.
We are not alone because your goodness and mercy follow us.

Wisdom & Knowledge

Wisdom is a gift to us from God that we can embrace and work on that makes our lives so much better.

Definition of Wisdom: discernment, understanding, gaining understanding about something or skillful living.

Wisdom gives us the information on how we can act or react.

I Chronicles 1:7

What if we look at situations and ask, OK God what can I learn from this? How can I grow?

Here are some principles we can apply to our lives to have wisdom...

  • Choose Wisdom: approach with positivity
  • When we trust our instincts
  • Set boundaries and be intentional about what we are seeking wisdom for
  • Surround yourself with wisdom
  • Learn from your mistakes
  • What can I learn from this and how can I apply it to my life
  • Learn from the mistakes of others
  • Choose it daily!

It’s a conscious decision to not get caught up in the emotions of the moment. If we will be intentional about asking God how we can learn and grow. That’s how we gain wisdom and that’s how we gain life!

10/18/20 Vision in place of convenience

Faith & Science

Positive thoughts are like teflon, they don’t stick! We are hard wired to be attracted to negative thoughts that stick like velcro.

Our journey is about becoming who we already are.

Our brains latch onto negative thoughts more than anything. It’s a scientifically proven fact.

Negativity is like velcro. It latches onto everything. 96% of the things we worry about never come true. We’ve got to change our mindset.

Neuroscientists say there are ways that we can reprogram and rewire our brains called neuroplasticity. If we will choose not just daily but hourly to focus on the positive things we can change our very way of being. When we do that we are living into who we are created to be.

Neuroscientists say that if we will hold onto a positive thought or positive feeling for 15 sec. It will take effect and affect our neurons firing in our brain.

It seems to be talked about a lot – - – the debates over science and religion. Literal or metaphorical. Yeah – there are issues with the stories. In fact, sometimes there are two (or three) completely different accounts of the same event. But instead of spending time debating the discrepancies, what if we move beyond the Question: True or False? The Answer: God. Loves. You. And. Me. This answer changes everything. How can we look into the passages that we question, even the ones that bring great debate, and find life-transforming meaning?

How can we look into the passages that we question, even the ones that bring great debate, and find life-transforming meaning?

We remember unique experiences with family and friends, gifts that were unexpected – both good and bad, and often times our memories cause us to long for what no longer is. There is much wisdom to be gained from our memories. Through this message series we will explore what wisdom can be gleaned from memories of the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.
