Welcome to episode 1 of this new season (my fifth!)

In this episode, I invite you to ask yourself this question, "Are you satisfied with the version of life you're currently living today, right now?" This is the question that's occupied my mind in recent weeks, and it's led me down a disorienting rabbit hole in the best possible way.

How have you approached feelings of nonfulfillment and dissatisfaction? What has caused you to feel this way in your experience as a man, father? And what sorts of decisions have you made to overcome it or be overcome by it?

Send me your story at wtfatherhoodpodcast@gmail.com

Experiencing a miscarriage as a man is a difficult journey. It's a path I've walked and it led to the creation of "The Miscarriage Dad" platform—aimed at educating, raising awareness, and supporting men and fathers who find themselves in this heart-wrenching terrain. It's an unfortunate reality that compelled me to reinvent my Instagram presence, focusing a little less on the Welcome to Fatherhood brand, to create a much-needed safe space for men grappling with loss.

Have you ever wondered how deep the rabbit hole of systemic failures and biases in the family court system can go? I invite you to join me in my riveting conversation with Gary Ivory, a resilient father who battled the beast for 16 agonizing years, and learn about his journey of survival, justice, and relentless fight for his child. Gary, a nonprofit executive and author, shares an emotional roller coaster of a narrative that reflects the harsh realities of the family court system and its implications on innocent lives.

Gary recounts the heartbreaking tale of fighting for his daughter's custody while being wrongfully accused of domestic violence. His former partner's skillful manipulation of the system, coupled with systemic failures and racial biases, led to extended court proceedings. His story doesn't just stop at the battlefront of the courtrooms. From hiring private investigators and confronting school superintendents to dealing with a dramatic kidnapping episode, Gary went to extraordinary lengths to see his daughter. His tale is one of caution and inspiration, shedding light on the importance of trusting instincts and navigating the complexities of the legal system.

Gary's experiences serve as a stark reminder of the need to constantly fight for truth and justice. Join us as we navigate this journey and uncover the realities of the family court system, the implications of systemic failures, and the importance of never giving up on one's children, regardless of the hardships faced. This episode is a testament to Gary's perseverance and a call to action for anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation.

When you think about the journey of becoming a parent, the excitement and joy of expecting a child often come to mind. But what happens when that journey is abruptly halted by the heartbreak of pregnancy loss? I recently had the privilege of speaking with Brandon Byrnes, a brave father who opened up about his own experience with miscarriage and the subsequent road to healing. Together, we explored the rollercoaster of emotions that come with such a loss and the importance of sharing our stories to find solace and support.

We also took the time to discuss the often-overlooked experiences of men who have gone through miscarriages, recognizing the unique challenges they face in expressing their grief.

Through sharing the raw emotions and experiences surrounding pregnancy loss, this episode aims to bring comfort and understanding to those who have faced a similar heartache. As Brandon's story demonstrates, the journey of healing is ongoing, and it's through connecting with others that we can find the support and hope needed to move forward. So join us as we shed light on this deeply emotional topic, and let's create a space together where those who have suffered pregnancy loss can feel seen, heard, and understood.

If you are a male partner looking for support following a loss of pregnancy, or you are with a male partner who could benefit from support, the Dads & MiscarriageFacebook community is here to help.

This episode concludes my conversation with Scott Mair.

How can dads be more involved in the pregnancy journey and the early stages of their child's life? This is a question we explore. We discuss the importance of engaging both parents from the beginning of the pregnancy, creating a level playing field for open communication, and understanding each other's roles and responsibilities.

Scott also shares his thoughts on supporting both parents' mental health during the perinatal period, the progress made in the UK in providing support for dads, and the vital role fathers play in their child's life from the very beginning.

This episode features a conversation with my guest, Scott Mair, a husband and father of 7 boys ranging from 20-4 years old. Privately, Scott enjoys spending time home educating his children with his wife Sarah and traveling with them while trying to remain outdoors as much as possible.

Are we truly supporting fathers in their journey through parenthood? Join us in our eye-opening conversation as we explore the evolving roles of fathers and the challenges they face. As we discuss the importance of equal partnerships between parents and the unintentional negative messages some healthcare settings may send to fathers, you'll gain insights into the value of education and support for dads in their journey through fatherhood.

In this episode, Scott shares his own inspiring story of raising seven boys and the struggles he faced along the way. We delve into the significance of spiritual care and psychosocial services for fathers in healthcare settings, comparing the differences in support offered by larger and smaller institutions. Additionally, Scott opens up about his experience with two critically unwell sons and how he reached out to the universe for help, reminding us of the power of connection and the need for inclusivity and diversity in healthcare.

Lastly, we tackle the societal expectations and gender roles in parenting that can hinder fathers from being fully engaged in their children's lives. We emphasize the importance of effective communication between parenting partners, especially during stressful times, and discuss ways to navigate and overcome the challenges fathers face. Don't miss this thought-provoking and inspiring conversation with Scott Mer, as we reinforce the need for spiritual and psychosocial support for fathers to succeed in their parenting journey.

This week's episode features a conversation with my guest, JK McLeod. JK is a married father of two children, a 17 year old daughter and a 10 year old son. JK learned from an early age about the pivotal and impactful role that fathers can play in the family.

He is the host of a weekly podcast called 'Help Me Understand', which focuses on learning more about the context behind the views, opinions, and events that we experience in everyday life.

He is also a personal trainer, focusing on using fitness as a vehicle to empower people to develop themselves both physically and mentally.

In our conversation we react to the events at The Covenant School in Nashville, TN that claimed the lives of six people, as well as the life of the shooter. Even more unfortunate, this episode will be released on the heels of the most recent mass shooting in Louisville, KY. To echo JK's sentiment, "Here we go, again."

Our thoughts and prayers are with those families and communities, all of them, as their lives have forever changed.

Piotr is the Director of International Development at BLIK, a leading European mobile payment system and scheme that is rapidly expanding in other geographies. Piotr earned his executive education certificate from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2022. As a lifelong learner and an advocate of contributing back to the finance sector which he is so passionate about, Piotr prioritizes ongoing collaboration with academia to continue forging strong-ties to communities of learning, as well as to share his expertise and to provide broader knowledge as a commentator on the financial markets. Most importantly, Piotr is the father to a one year old son, and while on parental leave has published the following articles on LinkedIn:

  • “I’m in the top 1% of super dads, so why are 99% of men not taking parental leave?”
  • “Why taking parental leave makes you a better dad, partner and leader”
  • “Four harmful myths about dads on parental leave”
  • “Three arguments for adding “dad” (or “mom”) on your LinkedIn profile and why it is important“

Today, Piotr and I discuss the topic of parental leave, and reasons why more fathers need to take leave from work to spend valuable time with their newborn and family.

This episode features a conversation with my guest, Susan Combs.

Susan L. Combs is President of Combs & Company, a full-service insurance brokerage firm based in New York City. Susan started the company at twenty-six years old with a drive to “Do more, better.”

This internal mantra has resulted in numerous successes and firsts, like being named the youngest National President in the over eighty-five-year history of Women in Insurance & Financial Services (WIFS) and the first female Broker of the Year winner for BenefitsPro.

Susan is “a Missouri girl in a New York world,” and it’s the lessons she learned during her Midwestern upbringing and two-plus decades in New York City that is the basis of her book Pancakes for Roger. The insights contained in these pages come from family, friends, colleagues, and life in general. But the most important teachings are from her late father. It was his steady guidance in life that set Susan’s foundation and it was his passing that inspired the annual Pancakes for Roger movement every February.

When Susan’s not running her business or trying to help others through their own challenges, you can find her flipping tires at her beloved CrossFit gym, supporting the Missouri Tigers, KC Chiefs, and Royals, or slaying the dragons that have come her way.

This week's episode features a conversation with my guest, Nathan Watson.

Nate is a husband and father, and has a strong social media presence under the handle @DadSwagg, which started as somewhat of a joke between he and wife, because he thought himself to be the coolest Dad alive; thus the "Swagg".

What will become obvious to listeners of this episode is the passion with which Nate thinks and talks about parenting and fatherhood. We talk about his own experiences early on in his fatherhood journey, as end our conversation considering the devestating implications of poor communication and parenting on children.

This episode features a conversation with my guest, Emilio Diez Barroso.

Emilio was a lifelong seeker—seeking recognition, achievement, love, success, and finally, the ultimate carrot: enlightenment. In his pursuit of enlightenment, he was forced to face
what all the seeking had been trying to avoid: his own sense of unworthiness. Defeated at the game of avoiding and humbled by the realization of his true nature, he is now dedicated to alleviating
suffering in the world. Emilio is married and is a father to three incredible teachers. He sits on the board of over a dozen companies, is the CEO of NALA Investments and is an active philanthropist, investor and entrepreneur. He has a master’s in spiritual psychology and resides in Los Angeles.
Emilio also authored a book titled: "The Mystery of You: Freedom Is Closer Than You Think". In The Mystery of You, he invites you to uncover a peace that is untouched by the happenings of life and encourages you to discover who you are beyond your familiar identities and roles. He grounds the awakening that was once reserved for monasteries into the nitty-gritty of everyday parenting, relationships and business. Emilio shows us how to stop the ways in which we perpetuate our own suffering and claim our inherent capacity to experience the bliss of being fully alive.

This episode features a conversation I recently had with some friends on the college campus where we all met nearly two decades ago. Three out of of the four voices featured in this episode met on the campus of Middlebury College (Derek, Bill, Kelly). The fourth voice (Eric) is the partner of our friend and Midd alumni, Lili; and though Eric is not a father, he graciously accepted my invitation to join in this conversation about fatherhood in spite of his initial skepticism.

This conversation is special because it marks the first time Derek, Bill, and I spent time together not just as friends but also as Dads. And capturing this moment was a truly special accomplishment. Our conversation was broadly about fatherhood. It is full of empathy, encouragement, gushing over our children, perspective shifts, healing, and lots of laughter and good time as men.

This episode features a fun conversation with my guest, Jeff Fajans.

Jeff is an avid music creator & guitar player - creating a new style of “Beastie Boys for Babies” kids music that captures the authentic, wild ride of parents and their little kids experiencing the world together. He’s a Dad to an energetic 3 1/2 year old boy named Hendrix (the inspiration for all of his music), and has been married to his amazing wife, Katherine, for over 5 years. Jeff also is a creative performance & leadership coach who works with creators and entrepreneurs to help them bring their biggest ideas to life and become better leaders. He serves on the Board of Advisors at Oasis Center International - a non-profit whose mission is to bring creativity and arts mentorship programs to underserved youth across the world. His mission is to help 1 million people bring their biggest ideas to life through his coaching, teaching, and advocacy of creativity.

In this conversation Jeff and I talk about the origin of his love for music and why it is important for him to pass it on to his son in order to help him discover and develop his creative side. Jeff makes some intriguing connections with how music has helped him become a more centered person. Lastly, we discuss what exactly Jeff identified was off or amiss in children's music, and ways this discovery can help us with our parenting in the bigger picture.

We also share some time reflecting on the most recent school shooting tragedy in Uvalde, TX, as well as other terroristic acts of hate and violence toward minority communities. This episode features a conversation with my guest, Jane Honikman, M.S.

Jane co-founded Santa Barbara Postpartum Education for Parents (PEP) in 1977. Ten years later in 1987 she founded Postpartum Support International (PSI). Jane has published 5 books, most recently Parental Mental Health: Factoring in Fathers. She and her husband Terry have lived in Santa Barbara since 1970, have 3 married children, and enjoy being grandparents to 8 grandchildren.

In this conversation, Jane sheds some light on how she began her lifelong advocacy for equal parental consideration in the postpartum and mental health space by sharing intimate details of her past and the way that began to shape her. We talk about how having essential conversations about ones past and family history before conceiving and having children can help new parents be more grounded during the difficult days of parenthood. Jane shares a very valuable reframing of how the term "postpartum" should be better thought of and defined, explaining that this term is a lifelong adjective that still applies even in the phase of being grandparents. We conclude with discussing the value of openly talking about what can be difficult topics people experience in parenting as a means to push our society's perception of parenting forward in the right direction.

This episode features part two of a conversation with my guest, Nathaniel H. Drew.

Nathaniel H. Drew is a native of Hampton, Virginia and was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. He is an ordained minister, a licensed therapist, an author, and a coach. He currently pastors the Breath of Life SDA Church in Memphis, TN.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in theology from Oakwood University, and a Masters of Divinity degree from Andrews University Theological Seminary. He has been recognized for excellence in church leadership in the areas of church healing, church growth, stewardship, community outreach, and administration. A well sought-after public speaker, Nathaniel has spoken for audiences all across the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and South Africa.

Nathaniel also obtained a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University. He is a licensed Marriage and Family therapist, whose passion is to see the brokenness in the family system made whole. His personal vision is “Heal the family, change the world”.

Nathaniel is an accomplished author of two books. The first is a devotional book entitled, While You’re Waiting: God’s ‘Not Yet’ is Not a No. The second is entitled, 15 Ways to Make a Big Impact in a Small Church. His latest book was the catalyst that launched him into the coaching space. Nathaniel is the founder of The Pastor’s Arena. A platform that was started to help pastors take center stage in their personal and professional lives. Nathaniel believes that the most significant impact a person can have is not what they achieve, but what they empower others to achieve.

Through it all, Nathaniel considers his greatest accomplishment to be marrying the love of his life, Lillian Drew. A close second was the birth of their two daughters Linaya Joy and Noelle Desiree’.

In this episode, Nathaniel and I open up about why it is so difficult for us to allow our respective fathers to have access to our child/children. This leads to some reflection and deeply moving perspective about what the nature of our relationships may be like with our child/children once we've aged. How will they feel about us as their father? What will they say? How will they describe us to others? We certainly don't have the answers, but we open ourselves up to reflecting on these questions.

We pull no punches and leave no stones unturned; from jealousy to anger, frustration to disappointment and regret. This episode features a conversation with my guest and colleague, Deanine Osborne.

Deanine is a new generation Social Worker who turned her resentment for her biological father into a passion for father involvement. She has no problem sharing that’s she’s a product of a single parent household featuring a step daddy or two!

While completing her undergraduate degree, she worked with victims of domestic violence, allowing the opportunity to uplift women when they felt their lowest. She later went on to obtain her Masters degree before stepping foot into the world of Philadelphia family court, specifically adoptions. Over the years she’s found herself in countless situations where fathers were mishandled simple because they were fathers, all of which played a role in why she considers herself a “dad advocate.”

In this conversation, Deanine opens up about her early and recent history with her father, discovering its influence on her advocacy for fathers in her career as a Social Worker. She also describes the way two other prominent father-figures in her life helped shape her character and guided her through her early years, even encouraging her to address her relationship with her father. We also speak broadly of her short years working as a Social Worker in a family court system and how she perceived the court's treatment of fathers. Finally, I invite Deanine to share words from her heart to her dad and step-dads.

This episode features part two of last week's conversation with my guests, Matt Brown & Donald Mbeutcha.

We all have grieved something or someone in our lives before. But, could it be that in the reality of fatherhood some dads may be grieving the loss of what life was like BEFORE having children? Is that even a thing? And if so, is it better not to admit it and talk about it openly?

Or

…is it something other than a pre-child/children life a dad may be grieving altogether? Is it even right to refer to whatever that feeling is as “grief”?

We attempt to tackle these questions by reflecting on our shared & individual experiences as men and fathers.

This episode features a conversation with my guest, Augusta C. Foster.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA Augusta Foster is man that has experienced all levels of fatherhood. His single parent turned 2 parent household in his early teens molded the man he is today. That man is a divorce survivor and self proclaimed "child support veteran". These titles, that he wears as badges of honor, have been earned through prayer, therapy, and work; work that now assist other men in becoming even better fathers after marriage.

In this conversation Augusta and I explore the inner thought process a man/father who is going through a divorce or separation may experience, offering a paradigm that is quite unique and profound. He details what he means by the self-ascribed titles of “divorce survivor” & “child support veteran”. Finally, Augusta addresses each of his five children by sharing words of wisdom from the heart.

I know you will surely enjoy this deeply intimate and wholesome talk with Augusta.

This episode features the conclusion of a conversation with my guest, Matt Brown.

Matt is an extremely proud dad, husband, son, and friend; and is passionate about creating new content that helps others. He is often talking to other dads on MusicFootballFatherhood's IG Live account, The Lodge, or on MFF's many other events. Matt is looking forward to hosting his own podcast later this year as a means to engage with other people in order to create a space where life experiences can be shared. To understand part of Matt's philosophy of fatherhood, parenting, and life in general, he shares this quote by Jon Kabat-Zinn: "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn how to surf".

This week, Matt and I share our thoughts about how we were disciplined growing up, and how we intend to the same or differently with our children as they grow. This topic tends to be controversial. However, all perspectives are welcomed in this conversation and the ones shared here are uniquely our own.

This episode features a conversation with my guest, Matt Brown.

In this conversation, Matt opens up about his journey finding out he was having twins while he was only expecting to grow his family by an additional child. It is a wildly entertaining story, but raw and honest from his perspective at the same time. We take the opportunity to talk some football (soccer) and an instance where racial tension and hate reared its ugly face through sports, and how we processed these events as fathers, more particularly Black fathers, raising Black children in different parts of the world.

This is only part one of our conversation. It is rich, bold, engaging, funny, and intimate.

This episode features a conversation with my guest, Cameron "Cam" Hall.

Cam is a father of 2 amazing boys ( Dylan & Ethan), and has been married for 9 years to his wife, Lindsay. He works in the Special Education field with children on the Spectrum. This field has a close spot to his heart because his oldest son is on the spectrum as well. When he's not being husband or dad, Cam is working on bettering his self and interests. Cam hosts his own Podcast/Video show, interviewing professional wrestlers, actors/actresses, cosplayers, various musicians and more. In 2022, he resolves to re-inventing himself to be the best person he can be. "Without Struggle, There is no Progress" is one of his most cherished sayings/quotes. You can find out more about Cam's interest by visiting www.completelydamaged.net

In this conversation, Cam and I cover a variety of topics as we journey through some of his most defining moments of fatherhood. Cam wears his heart on his sleeves, and that is evident in the way he talks about his boys and his passion to be a positive role model and advocate for them. This conversation is intimate, bold, and full of insightful perspective and learning.

Happy New Year 2022!

I'm excited to restart our weekly Wednesday hangout by releasing this deeply moving conversation with my guest, Andrew McFarlane.

Andrew is a full-time dad and blogger. Join Andrew and thousands of other parents on PapaPerspective.com to learn how to improve your confidence in your parenting abilities fast. He shares tips, tools, and equipment for parents to enjoy parenting and build lasting relationships with their kids. When he's not blogging, he'll be out taking photos, playing hockey, or spending time with his wife and 2 boys.

In this conversation, Andrew and I talk about how he got into blogging and ways that has helped him grow as a father to his two boys. The conversation takes a very intimate and personal turn when I invite Andrew to talk about finding out his firstborn had congenital heart disease, and asking him to describe whatever headspace he was in and the feelings he felt during that period. We end on a heavy note (no worries, Andrew's son is alive and healthy, as stated above!) as we discuss an aspect of parenting that I think is underemphasized but crucially important to openly talk about.

I hope you enjoy and benefit from this rich and stimulating conversation!

This episode features PART TWO of a conversation with my guest & lifelong friend, Rudolph Joseph.

In Rudolph's own words he is a "father first, son, brother, uncle, and a man after Gods own heart. Born and raise in Miami, FL. You can say Florida grown and Dade county fundamentals. Strong passion for bringing out the best in others! Love to read, write (poetry) and spending time with my daughters as they are my purpose! 38 years come October 19… I truly believe God never gives you more then you can bear, so why complain (who’s really listening)? For me it’s simple, once you begin, the rest is easy… you must always put forth an effort! The end result of that will be a betterment for you now and for your future! My mother is my biggest inspiration!"

He opens up about the tumultuous nature of the relationship between he and his ex-wife and how that plays into his ability to be involved in his children's lives. Rudolph reflects on the significance of the time he spent caring for his ill father prior to his passing, and how the instructions his father had planted in him came to full fruition once his second child was born. He also reflects on the value of therapy and the taboo nature surrounding encouraging men and fathers to seek support through therapy. Finally, Rudolph paints a vivid and disturbing portrait of his experience fighting for his paternal rights in family court in Tennessee.

This episode features a conversation with my guest & co-founder of The Fitness Rebellion, an online fitness and wellness program, Matt Wilbur.

In Matt’s own words:

“Growing up I was a skinny, goofy kid who got beat up & bullied, and that initially sparked my interest in lifting weights. I soon became obsessed with strength training and bodybuilding, pouring over information for hours on end, and methodically tracking my progress.

This eventually led me to start competing in bodybuilding in 2012 shortly after I had begun dating my wife, Megan. I've since competed in over 9 shows & earned several placings making me a national qualified athlete.

I gave up competing in 2018 to go all in on coaching others to achieve success with their health & fitness than my own personal fitness wins.

My focus now is on being a great husband to my wife Megan, father to my 1.5 year old Layla, and leader to my clients and community.”

In this episode, Matt plays the role of host as he invites me to open up about the ups and downs of my fitness journey. I’ve made some incredible discoveries and breakthroughs along this journey, and I hope my story can serve as inspiration to other dads who may be struggling with whatever journey they’re on, not just fitness.

Nate is a father of one, living in the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia. He is a father first and foremost, and a metalworker second. In this conversation, Nate also opens up about his journey from alcoholism to sobriety; and the role his son plays in his decision to make this radical change in his life. And we end our chat by addressing having to reveal to his son the truth about his biological father.

This episode features a conversation with my guest, Tom Weston. Tom describes himself as a husband to an incredible wife, and dad to an awesome, wild little dude, with one more on the way in August.

In his own words:
"The last year has been tough, but amazing. Tough, because we haven’t met too many people or done too many things. Amazing, because we’ve spent everyday together, been there for all the milestones and developmental changes (big and small), built extremely close relationships and on a personal note, watched my wife be the most awesome mom in the world. The last year has also highlighted the importance of pursuing your passions. I’m super passionate about donuts and have just opened a donut shop, Range Donuts (IG: @rangedonuts). I love skiing, mountain biking and trail running. Being super active means I’m usually hungry, which is good, because I also love eating and baking. Check out Dad Is A Donut (IG: @dadisadonut) for what we’ve been eating recently."

Tom and I talk share our experiences being "pandemic" parents, as we both became first time parents May of last year. We also discuss the way dads are perceived in some public places.

This episode features a conversation with my guest–a long time friend–Terry St. Jean, J.D./M.B.A.

Terry is a Vice President at Goldman Sachs Asset Management's legal department working as a contract negotiator. He currently serves on the GSAM legal department's Diversity and Inclusion Committee and also serves as a coach/mentor to interns and associates. Terry joined Goldman Sachs in 2015; however, began his career as a contract negotiator at Castleton Commodities International (f/k/a Louis Dreyfus Highbridge Energy) in 2013. He has a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology from Middlebury College (were we both attended) and earned his J.D./M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut Schools of Law and Business. Currently, Terry lives in Dallas, TX with his wife Noelle.

Most importantly, Terry is a brother and compatriot, both of us sharing Haitian ancestral roots. Terry is not a father, which makes this conversation even more meaningful and insightful, as we explore the "why" of fatherhood. This episode is layered with depth and significance, and I hope you appreciate listening to it as much as I appreciated having and recording it.

My son turns one year young today! And there is no better way to celebrate his first year of life outside the womb than to reflect on what the journey has been alongside my wife with my wife. We reflect on some of the key moments during our son's first year, while trying to put into words his significance in our lives since his arrival.

Interspersed with this conversation with my wife are audio clips of my real time updates and commentary as things were happening back on May 26, 2020, while we were at the hospital. The heartbeat to begin this episode is my son's actual heart rhythm; and the soundbite to conclude the episode is of my very first conversation with my son moments after he arrived.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy listening to this episode! Thank you for joining my wife and I in celebrating our baby's first birthday!

This episode features a conversation with my guest from the Land Down Under (Australia), Marius Reger, who authored an article titled: 14 Reasons Why Becoming A Father Will Make You A Better Man. I connected with Marius through a Facebook group for Dads, and he was gracious enough to accept my invitation to add his voice and experiences to this podcast. Marius shares a bittersweet story surrounding the birth of his daughter, and talks about finding his "why". We then explore some of the pointers in his article--without going through all of it (or else you wouldn't have a reason to read it, duh!)--and let that guide the remainder of our conversation.

This second stop along this historical fatherhood journey stops at the period of what Americans call the Industrial Revolution. This week, I try answering these questions:

But how did fatherhood during this era play out? What did it look like? How did the rise of industries and factories change a father’s involvement with his children and his spouse? And how is this ideal relevant or irrelevant to my time today in 2021?

We dive into all of this after first paying homage to the late great Kobe Bryant and those who died along with him in the tragic January 26, 2020 helicopter accident. I pay a tribute to Kobe by talking about what he means to me personally as a fan of the game of basketball.

Fatherhood Ideals in the United States: Historical Dimensions

If you've been following along, I am beginning to take a historical look at fatherhood by examining the "portrait" of fathers throughout four historical periods. In this episode, I make my first stop in colonial America to answer this question:

If I were to wake up one morning and find that, while I was asleep, my son, my wife and I were somehow transported back in time to Colonial America… in terms of the expectations of that society for the male parent figure, how would I be expected to carry out being a father to my son?

I hope you're intrigued by what I found, and thanks for taking this ride with me through the corridors of history!
