Developer: Game Arts
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1993

While Sega and Nintendo had been battling tooth and nail for control of the video game market in 1993, the big N was about to up the ante. Nintendo had some heavy hitters on the way, not least of which was Star Fox from Argonaut Software. With the power of the Super FX chip, we were playing a fully 3D space shooter on our Super Nintendos! It felt magical!

But Sega CD owners had their own 3D space shooter to get excited about. Game Arts, which was already a fan favourite on the system thanks to the previously-released Lunar, had produced the absolutely stunning Silpheed. Both in screenshots and especially in motion, it kind of blew Star Fox out of the water. Enthusiast magazine GameFan, which was overtly pro-Sega and pro-Sega CD, went berzerk over the game for months. In fact, I’d say that magazine did far more marketing-wise than publisher Sega ever did for Silpheed.

I can’t say that I blame them. Firing up Silpheed for the first time is just breathtaking! It immediately impresses with its amazing 3D backgrounds and ships and a silky-smooth framerate. A far cry from the low-poly ships in Star Fox blinking around the screen at 20 frames per second.

The console war was over!

OK, not really. But boy was Silpheed cool looking! It was a showpiece for the Sega CD. Sure, those impressive backgrounds were just full-motion video, but just interactive enough through creative camera movements and hit detection that you still felt like you were weaving through battleships or surface canyons as you made a strafing run against a level boss.

Game Arts did something brilliant here. The realtime graphics and video backgrounds are tailored to the system’s colour palette so perfectly that they blend seamlessly together during gameplay. What’s more, the pre-rendered CG video in the background was made to look good on the Sega CD, rather than being so high-res and colourful that the limited hardware ripped it to pieces during rendering. Yes, that means Silpheed doesn’t necessarily look as vibrant as it could have, but on the flip side you don’t get any of the artifacting or screen-door speckling that we saw in, say, Microcosm or Sewer Shark or really any other FMV game on the system.

The end result was jaw-dropping stages that found players weaving through canyons on a planet surface, fighting their way through hyperspace, dead in the middle of a massive capital-ship space battle, and more. When I fire this game up today, 30 years after release, I’m still impressed by how it looks.

Silpheed isn’t a typical vertical shooter, the whole thing is presented at an oblique, into-the-screen angle, just like Axelay for the SNES. This drives home the whole “3D” presentation even more, though it’s not necessarily conducive to the best shooter experience. The further your targets are from the front of the screen, the more difficult it is to line them up. And if you decide to fly into the screen, your lateral movement is severely limited. For the most part, you don’t need to do this, though it’s really easy to have a couple repair power-ups floating around up there, tempting you to make a run for them before the next wave of enemies appears.

I had no idea back in 1993 that Silpheed was actually a remake of one of Game Arts’ earliest games. The original Silpheed was released in 1986 for the PC-8801, a very early example of a fully 3D game on Japanese computers. It was so impressive that US PC publishing giant Sierra On-Line licensed it (as well as sidescrolling shooter Thexder) for release in the west.

Silpheed is not a carbon copy of the old game with new graphics, though. The original game repeated a handful of stages over and over again, in true arcade style. Whereas Silpheed on the Sega CD features around a dozen unique levels with a linear story, told through a few cutscenes and the odd voice-overs during gameplay.
Speaking of audio, one thing Silpheed never gets enough credit for is its great soundtrack. It’s not the most impressive to grace a Sega CD game, but the score fits each level just about perfectly, and rocks hard enough that you get pumped to take on each new challenge. I’m not sure why it doesn’t get mentioned more often.

Ultimately, Silpheed was and is a showpiece for the Sega CD hardware. It’s stood the test of time better than the games it competed against. 3D 16-bit titles like Star Fox started showing their age almost immediately, while other full-motion video rail shooters of the era generally failed to sidestep the rendering issues introduced by the hardware they were on. Game Arts showed what a developer could do when it looked to harness the Sega CD’s strengths, rather than muscle through its weaknesses.

Developer: Sonic! Software Planning
Publisher: Sega
Released: 1995

I’m a huge fan of Sega’s Shining series of RPGs. At least up until the point they were bastardized into whatever they are today. And while the series included dungeon crawlers and zelda-style action games, the Shining Force games definitely dominate most people’s memories when the series comes up in conversation. It makes sense, since there were nine of them across the Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear and Saturn.

But English releases of those games were sporadic at best. Shining Force III Scenarios two and three were most famously left in Japan, but it wasn’t the first time Sega of America skipped a game or two in the series. Of the three Game Gear Shining Force releases, only the middle one got localized and released in English.

Sega was in a weird position with these games. The Game Gear was getting pretty long in the tooth by 1994, and had never been remotely as popular as Nintendo’s Game Boy in either Japan or North America. The Sega CD was nearing the end of its life as well, and again, hadn’t set either market on fire. So I’m not sure why Sega decided to bundle up the first two GG Shining Force games onto one disc for the Mega CD in Japan in 1994, but I wasn’t surprised when Sega of America initially stated they had no interest in bringing Shining Force CD to western shores.

Thankfully they reversed course, and a year later, in 1995, North American Sega CD owners were treated to Shining Force CD.

Unlike Shining Force II on the Genesis, the first “book” of Shining Force CD is more of a direct sequel to the original Shining Force, focusing on a generation of heroes directly descended from the warriors in the original game (for the most part). The gameplay is almost exactly what we’d come to expect from the Shining Force games – assemble your force, equip them, upgrade them as necessary, and then take them into the field and use your superior tactical thinking to outwit and outmaneuver the enemy armies you encounter.

The battlefields look the same as previous games, and you still get the fantastic battle screen featuring nice, big sprites of your heroes and their enemies. Rather than the already-incredible chip tunes we were all used to in this series, the music is replaced by gorgeous redbook audio that simultaneously feels new while somehow sounding authentic to all the games that came before this.

There is one major change that I feel belies the portable nature of the source material. All of the overworld navigation – specifically town exploration – is completely gone. So most of the atmosphere NPC conversations would normally add to a game like this just doesn’t exist on Shining Force CD.

Where Book 1 is a remake of the first Shining Force Gaiden game on the Game Gear, Book 2 is a remake of Shining Force Gaiden 2, or as it was known in North America, The Sword of Hajya. The second book features a mostly new cast of characters. You play as a young guard Deanna, who ultimately ends up leading a force of his own to rescue the troops from the previous chapter.

Upon completing Book 2, Book 3 is unlocked. An oddity of Shining Force CD is that your Shining Force in Book 3 is made up of characters from the first two books in the game, and you can carry forward their stats if you like…but only if you have the Sega CD RAM cartridge. This expanded save memory is required because the onboard system RAM isn’t large enough to hold the save file otherwise.

Anyway, the coolest part about Book 3 is that it’s a wholly unique game, again a direct continuation of the previous story, taking place just months after Deanna’s quest. You again play as Nick, the main character from the first book.

Finally, if you manage to find a secret item in Book 2 and finish the rest of the game, Book 4 is unlocked. Again, you can bring forward stats for your characters from previous books if you have the RAM cart. Book 4 is a single battle, and is also unique to the series.

As you can imagine, all this content adds up! At a whopping 53 total battles, Shining Force CD is the biggest game in the series. I love that Sega had a change of heart and decided to bring it out in North America in spite of the general lack of success of the Game Gear and Sega CD. But since it was such a late release here on a generally unpopular system, I’m guessing not many people had the chance to play it. Luckily Sega saw fit to include Shining Force CD on the Genesis Mini 2 in 2022.

Shining Force CD is the first time I remember seeing a game credited to Sonic Software Planning, though the two Game Gear games upon which it is based both contain the word “Sonic” in the title screen. Sonic Software planning wasn’t a new development group at the time, but rather a new name for Sega Consumer Development Studio 4, which had previously worked on Shining in the Darkness and the first two Shining Force games. It would eventually merge with Camelot Software Planning (the two founders – Hiroyuki Takahashi and Shugo Takahashi – were brothers), working with Sony on titles like Beyond the Beyond and Hot Shots Golf while still developing Shining games for Sega. Ultimately it would settle in as a major developer of Mario sports games for Nintendo.

We’re so lucky that Sega saw fit to release Shining Force CD in the west when it really had every reason not to. It’s another Sega CD classic, and shouldn’t be missed.

Original Developer: Reflections Interactive

Port: Digital Developments

Publisher: Psygnosis

Released: 1994

As a kid who never saw an Amiga computer in person, it always seemed like some mythical machine capable of playing games that looked so amazing they could never be replicated on the home consoles I actually had access to. And Shadow of the Beast always popped up as an example of exactly that. See how pretty this game is? The Amiga is incredible! The Genesis and SNES will never look this good!

Of course, Shadow of the Beast did eventually make it to the Genesis thanks to Electronic Arts. I remember being so excited to play it. I was finally going to find out what all the fuss was about. Yeah, I knew it wasn’t going to look as nice as the Amiga original, but I could accept that.

What I couldn’t accept was the awful gameplay. This was the game magazine has been showing off forever? This was what I’d been waiting for? Talk about all flash and no substance! It was an early indication of what I later found to be true: so many Amiga games were tech demos of the computer’s horsepower first and games second.

So it’s safe to say I didn’t have very high hopes for Shadow of the Beast II on the Sega CD. Which I guess was a good thing? At least I wasn’t disappointed this time around.

Shadow of the Beast II was actually released on cartridge as well, but this is one of those instances where the two different versions aren’t really related. While the cartridge port was done by WJS Design and released by Electronic Arts, the Sega CD port was done by Digital Developments and released by Psygnosis itself, the same company that published the original game on the Amiga. I believe (but not entirely sure) that this version of the game is closely related to the rare FM Towns Marty port.

Shadow of the Beast II feels kind of like a platformer mixed with a traditional PC graphic adventure. You’re running around in an open world with multiple paths, at the end of which are usually different characters or monsters you have to deal with. But you have to do everything in a specific order, or you’ve basically wasted the time and energy you spent getting there. Get to the Wizard before finding his ring and he’ll tell you to go back. Get to the entrance of the good dragon’s cave and his guard will tell you to go find the evil dragon and kill him to retrieve some other thingamabob or doohicky before you can proceed. Think the worst of Rare games on N64 and GameCube and you’re on the right track.

That format is pretty infuriating in itself, but it’s made that much worse by absolutely awful controls and hit detection. So many problems! First of all, the main character doesn’t react at all when hit, so it’s possible to keep running headlong into danger while taking a stupid amount of damage. There’s also an issue where no button input will read during the turning animation on the hero, so, for instance, jumping back and forth between alternative platforms can be needlessly frustrating when you on-screen avatar simply doesn’t jump when you want him to.

What’s more, the encounters are very poorly designed. Oftentimes enemies just keep spawning in at a relentless rate until you’ve passed an invisible trigger point. And these terrible encounters are exacerbated by awful hit detection. It’s a mess.

I guess if there’s a positive here it’s that the first game set your expectations pretty much perfectly for the sequel. I guess, maybe, you could look at this as an extremely early example of a Metroid style adventure game. It was originally released in 1990, to be fair. But the original Metroid on the NES felt like a much better game. And none of that really matted if you were a Sega CD player, since Super Metroid hit the SNES the same year as Shadow of the Beast II came out on this platform.

Publisher: Sony Imagesoft

Developer: Digital Pictures

Released: 1992

“Welcome to the sewers, punk! The guy you’re replacin’? He had that same tough-guy smirk on his face that you do! ‘Til he hit the wall…they’re out there blottin’ him up with handiwipes! But the Ghost here, I always come back for more!”

Ghost’s opening dialogue in Sewer Shark counts as one of the most memorable moments for me as a Sega CD player. Played by David Underwood, this tough-as-nails guide through the ratigator-infested sewers of the game became a kind of defacto spokesperson for the system. Almost everyone had heard him tell them to “Relax! Pretend it’s a game! Maybe it’ll even be fun!” in television ads for the console add-on.

Like Night Trap, the other Digital Pictures developed FMV game to hit shelves during the Sega CD launch, Sewer Shark started life as one of the original games for Hasbro’s doomed ControlVision console. The system was designed to employ innovative new VHS tapes where multiple streams of video would run simultaneously and could be switched on the fly. At its heart, Sewer Shark was a simple shooting gallery, but with the full motion video directed by John Dystra (one of the effects gurus on the original Star Wars) it became something so much more.

As has been reported on endlessly in recent years, the Control-Vision was cancelled, the rights to Night Trap and Sewer Shark bought up by Tom Zito, and the tapes mothballed until sometime in 1990, when Sony came looking for games to put on their new Nintendo PlayStation.

Of course, the partnership between Nintendo and Sony didn’t work out so great. Luckily Sega was getting ready to launch its own CD-ROM add-on for the Genesis in 1992, and a new relationship was formed. Sega and Sony would split the cost of updating the VHS games for the more modern format. Sega would release Night Trap. Sony would release Sewer Shark under its Sony Imagesoft label. Sony definitely got the safer end of that deal.

From a purely objective point of view, Sewer Shark isn’t very good. It’s a mix of gallery shooter and simon-says, where the player spends their entire time chasing various, difficult-to-see enemies around the screen firing wildly, while doing their best to alter their heading based on directions fed to them by Catfish, a nav robot voiced by Robert Weaver who gives directions in groups of three. Early on it’s OK to miss a few of these turns, but after about five minutes a missed junction will result in certain death as the Whole Hawg (you craft) slams into a dead end.

Along with the shallow gameplay comes an awful, grating soundtrack that represents some of the worst Genesis sound quality you’ll ever hear. With the CD drive so busy streaming all that low-res video it can’t also spit out redbook-quality music.

But Sewer Shark remains one of my favourite FMV games of all time. Compared to Night Trap the shallow gameplay was easy to understand from the word go, so the frustration factor was low. And the multi-track video switched so smoothly that your brain never really noticed it happening, unlike the slight delay when switching between feeds in Night Trap.

Plus the performances are great. Robert Constanzo (Total Recall, Die Hard 2) chews up the scenery as antagonist Commissioner Stenchler, while Underwood’s Ghost spends the whole game shouting extremely memorable, cheesy lines at you, giving you ridiculous new callsigns like Dogmeat and Ratbreath, telling you to shoot the tubes and man up whenever things start going wrong.

Yeah, that’s mostly nostalgia talking, but I don’t care. I’m always up for a game of Sewer Shark.

Along with Night Trap, Sewer Shark feels like a trailblazer within the Digital Pictures library. The success of these two games were the jumping off point for the developer to create its later titles, which definitely saw a jump in quality. These two originals were already years old when they first hit the Sega CD, so they have a distinct look and feel that you don’t get with later Digital Pictures releases.

Sewer Shark reportedly sold about 100,000 units before Sega eventually made it the pack-in game for the remodeled Sega CD 2. It would also make its way to the 3DO system in later years, giving players a chance to see the video a bit closer to its original VHS quality. Here’s hoping that Sewer Shark is destined to get a modern remake alongside Night Trap, Double Switch, and Ground Zero: Texas. It’ll be a day one purchase for yours truly.

Shoot the tubes, Dogmeat!
