Welcome to Chasing Clarity, a conversational podcast about Ocean Imagery with the artists that create it. In each episode I explorer why an artist does what they do, how they do it and what equipment they do it with. We discuss difficulties, experiences and knowledge they can pass on to you, the listener. Creating from the land, air or sea, follow a relatable journey as we all chase the ever elusive clarity.

Owen Cavanagh and I look at each others frozen screens as storms engulf Brisbane all the way to Noosa. We wait for about an hour and start to record. I've passed Owens work many, many times on a quest to find a grinding cyclone right hander. The first over 20 years ago, I remember my co pilot pointing out "The Wave on the shed" and that we would be scoring so many waves like that in about 40mins...we did...and on the way home I remember looking at that wave piece thinking I truly had found my surfing Mecca. If you haven't already...and you fancy your image on the cover of issue 2 of Chasing Clarity magazine...to enter tag @chasingclaritypodcast on instagram and #chasingclaritypodcastmag in your posts. A few weeks before this interview Paul Smith is standing at the rear of his stunning Noosa gallery, he's ducked out for a break, head down responding to messages on his phone, he senses my approach as my shadow falls over his screen...he looks up. "G'day mate, I'm Odell."Now we sit face to face surrounded by his increasingly popular fine art. Paul talks about his 30 odd creative years of producing work, his love of the ocean and his adoration of music..and the process of documenting both. This is a great conversation with a private artist that rarely gives interviews.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/senseiodell/@senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? Dave Kelly is that mythical water housing maker that you hear about..but you can't quite tell if you know him or just know about him. His name is spoken by many a professional IN ocean image maker and he's responsible for providing the housing for some of Australia's most iconic surf footage and art.A surf photographer that carved out a living shooting for magazines Dave decided he needed a water housing to get unique images that he could continue to sell to publications..thus was born Dave Kelly Water Housings...a former trade qualified car body repairer Dave honed his skills in the Australian mining town of Newcastle, where he still resides. I first met Jon a couple of years ago, he had a pop up store not far from my house, his work hung on the walls of a large space and I was drawn to it above all others on display. We got to talking, I complemented him on his work. Some months later Jon and I spoke about mental health and the affect of injury, he asked about my experience with them both and I listened to what he was experiencing...I said I'd suffered with crippling anxiety and that a healthy dose of therapy with my physiologist meant I rarely felt it anymore.A year or so on Jon and I sit opposite each other in the Dbah carpark, it's the first video recording for our foray into a collaborative YouTube project. He talks about breaking his back in a cyclone swell at Kirra, starting photography, turning that passion for photography into a full time business...and shares all he's learnt in the last 10 years as a creative...so you too can have a career in the industry.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? Cassie Paxman is wide eyed and nervous as I look at her on my screen, tomorrow is her first swim with a camera and water housing, she wants to be as prepared as possible and has agreed to record with me as she has some final questions. The forecast is for a large swell to march in from the open ocean and she's determined to go no matter what!Listen in as I talk to her before her swim, after her swim and sometime down the track to check in on her progress. I first met Kuhio at Dbah beach on the boarder of Qld and NSW in Australia. It's a popular surf beach and Kuhio was traveling with his wife, I some how ended up having a back and forth on Instagram about something and here I was, walking on the hot sand, on a hot day to meet a guy I'd never met in person before. We compared cameras as all photographers do...mine was bigger and more robust, his was nimble and easy to adapt to the conditions...we ended up swimming and surfing the small beach breaks for a couple hours. The next day he was on a plane back to Hawaii.Kuhio hosted Trav on his first expedition to Hawaii, in this podcast episode we talk about that, shooting pipe, being published in the last ever edition of Surfer Magazine, what the best gear in his opinion is, what he's learned after being rescued and much more.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellI've been getting some amazing messages since the last Ep.If you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? Jo Tennant is a 7 year professional photographer, a runner up for the 2019 Scottish Portrait Awards and a beginner to getting in the cold, cold waters of Edinburgh with her camera. Brad Delaney's an unassuming man, softly spoken, always dressed in black. I met him one morning exiting the water on a day when the claz was particularly good. "Whats it like?' I asked..."Beautiful" was the one word answer he gave. In this episode of Chasing Clarity I get more than one word answers out of a man thats lived a colourful life and in the face of adversity formed a solid black and white mantra. We talk about a childhood spent living in a bar in Melbourne, as an adult working in Nightclubs and having 2000 staff, how he got started taking pictures of beautiful models, transitioned to Ocean Imagery, sought a different life in Japan, upset the Yakuza then returned to the Gold Coast to battle cancer and come full circle to photograph in studio again. So many learnings to unravel in the stories of lived experience...my favourite way of learning.I'm sure you'll enjoy the conversation as much as I did.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? Ben Player and I had been planning to do this interview in person when we next met up. It hadn't happened. Fortunately I have some amazing Patreons and because of them I was able to record this phone call.In this conversation I get to ask the 3 x Bodyboarding World Champion what it's like on the other side of the lens, what mind sets required to win three world titles, how he started a magazine, what makes a perfect image and how he nearly died three times surfing huge waves.Theres plenty of knowledge for us creatives mixed amongst the personal interest stories than Ben shares with me....I even ask him for some feedback on my work!I ask Ben about Social Media as well...his response may surprise you. Sean and I sit in a studio adorned with images of some of my favourite surfers. He talks me through a few as we warm up the vocal chords before the onslaught of questions I'm about to ask him. I first met Sean a couple years ago in a cafe on the Gold Coast, I'd heard him mentioned in a number of conversations as an inspiration to take up photography. The room was crowded with other creatives, I was introduced and he was polite...this was the first onslaught of questions by me...perhaps thats why this conversation took so long to happen.lolCOMPETITION!!Joli has agreed to judge the winners of the current comp we're running. Australian Surfing Life magazine (ASL as it used to be named) was a stable of my grommethood...first released in 1985, I didn't come across it untill two years later when my addiction to surfing began. When I hit my teens and our tiny coastal town had a dedicated newsagents, the only thing better than walking the 40mins to the shop, pulling the mag from the stand and thumbing the glossy pages of endless waves and being transported to tropical locations, the only thing better was not having to put it back and actually being able to pay for a copy.Ray Bisschop, the now publisher of Surfing Life magazine contacted me a couple of days ago, I've been chasing him down for an interview for months "Mate, we're running a competition your listeners will probably...definitely be interested in." he said to me..."Entries close in a couple weeks!" Listen to this episode to hear industry insights and how you can become Surfing Life Magazine Surf Photographer of the Year.Chasing Clarity is also holding a competition for ALL of you! Travis and I walk the elevated driveway to the legendary Peter Joli Wilson's residents. Perched atop a hill we overlook the distant waters of the Gold Coast. "Please, come in." Joli greets us and invites us in. "I've never done a podcast before!" He smiles as we sit at the family dinning table. "Don't worry mate" I reply..."I've done a few."Joli as he prefers to be called is in the upper echelon of Australian Surf Photography, a good friend of previous guest Ted Grambeau, he's credited as a pioneer in the industry. With over four decades of experience, this is an episode full of learnings and not to be missed. From tales of photographing my favourite surfer Kelly Slater, how the industry has changed, to being subscripted into the Vietnam war, theres not too many topics we didn't cover. Dylan re-assures me that we should paddle out here....I dont agree, I've surfed this place for 20 years....a bomb set washes through the keyhole further up where I'm pointing...."Ok, we'll go out here I say".Dylan's already 20 meters away, paddling out...I'm arguing alone.lol.I've been trying to have a conversation with Dylan for over a year, his Youtube clips would inspire me when feeling flat to get in the drink. Thundercloud...a surf documentary about MASSIVE waves at a life threatening location...this was Talon's pinnacle of his craft at the time...independent film making. Talon's an award winning Cinema film maker that's humble enough to only mention it after pressing him.In this Episode we talk about his experience working in the TV industry, being head of audio/visual for Billabong at the height of the industry and his drive to make surf movies since being a teenager. We discuss his love of travel and adventure and what it's like to release a film to the world....spoiler alert....its stressful and rewarding!lol.Just a heads up...the C bomb is dropped as a quote once in this Ep.There's so many learnings in this Ep, I especially like how Talon discusses the value of footage and how there's time pressures with each new swell.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? An impromptu, bonus episode about Cyclone Uesi. Travis suggested we have a discussion about the pumping swell, swimming in it and any insight we could give you to further refine your craft...I had the recording gear, needed a break from the water before another session and was also keen to offer any learnings. The sun is barely peeking over the horizon, a thin orange line glows off in the distance, but the streets are still dark. A tall figure, GoPro in hand, lumbers down to shore, plunges into the quicksilver water and disappears. Sometime later he re-emerges, rubbing the salt water from his eyes and climbs back up the beach. Smiling at passers-by, a look of satisfaction beams from his face as he steps off the sand and towards the local coffee van at Currumbin Alley for part 2 of his morning routine. This is Nick Jones in his groove.First thing in the morning, every morning, every day of the year. I grab a coffee with him, instantly energised by his vibe and start talking life. It’s hard to miss Nick, not so much because of his height but more so because of his personality. Outgoing, supportive, cheerful and funny, Nick is always up for a chat and constantly throwing his support behind those ocean creatives who come into his life. But underneath the cheerful exterior is a deep thinker and a talented photographer. Later in the day Nick and I sit down for a chat in his peaceful Currumbin Valley pad. A jack of all trades, in this episode we talk GoPro, drone, DSLR, vortex shots, rock splashes and any other weird and wonderful creations that pop into Nick’s mind, even using sultanas to create an effect in liquid for a shot! We talk about Nick’s journey from Sydney to the Gold Coast, what motivated him to pick up a camera for the first time, what it’s like to have a mind that’s buzzing away at 1 or 2 in the morning and how the ocean and capturing its unique magic has helped him deal with anxiety, insomnia and the curveballs of life. For anyone looking at getting into GoPro there’s some good little tips in here for you and many words of wisdom for those out there dealing with anxiety and looking for somewhere to channel their nervous energy. We even get some fun stories about how Nick’s over active mind has come up with some bizarre but incredible shots. You’ll definitely get a sense of his quirky sense of humour in this episode! If you’re listening make sure to hop onto Nick’s Instagram, @nickjonesimages, as we go through some of his more unique images. Play along with us and scroll through his page as you listen. Some of Nick’s work we talk about is for sale fully framed and I can say they look amazing.Apart from ocean imagery Nick and I love a chat about one of our other passions, basketball, in our spare time. He’s a Lakers man and I’m a Celtics man, so we’d like to dedicate this episode to one of our heroes Kobe Bryant, who tragically passed away during the editing of this episode. We’d love to see everyone’s work by tagging us on our Instagram page as well as hear your thoughts on our show ‘Chasing Clarity’. Listen to the end of the episode for a question on the future of the show and how your feedback can shape the direction.Lauren Bath and I battle the wind outdoors overlooking her local Gold Coast beach. This conversation had to happen on this day, and had to happen where we were, Lauren is a hard woman to schedule with but after a long time I finally had the opportunity to record our sit down discussion on Ocean Imagery. Lauren was Australia's first paid Instagrammer, we talk about that, the platform and how she uses it, we also discuss changes in her life, personal development, geek out on gear and even throw in some marine life stories for good measure. This episode is choc full of learnings! She drops a few F bombs in this one as most of us Australian's do...if you have little one's in the car be aware and yell "Earmuffs" like in that Vince Vaughn movie...otherwise turn it up in your ear buds and let the learnings wash over you.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? Welcome to the first Episode of 2020!Dane Hamilton, (Hammo) has long been a feature in the line up of the most crowded wave in the world, the small in stature, big in heart second generation surfboard shaper can often be heard keeping order among the chaos. A former professional surfer Dane gives me an insight into how Ocean Imagery and in particular Surf Photography translates to his business. He delves into what makes an advertising worthy image for him, which artists he's taking inspiration from, what photographers that are looking to break into the industry should do and how to approach brands like his own.I cover off on how you can do you part for spreading this amazing community and how we are getting closer to some massive goals.Have a great New Year everybody, thank you to the Patreons that make production life a little easier, your contributions directly translate to more episodes.I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to you, the listener, we blew past 10,000 listens last year, which is massive in the podcasting world in the category we're in. Jake, Travis and myself sit overlooking Currumbin Alley and the bustling hive that it is. We delve into the good, the bad and the ugly and discuss what we've learnt as a result in a year in review. Travis talks about achieving two of his life goals and the two years of hard work leading up to them, how it felt achieving them, take aways we can use to achieve our goals and what he's now aiming for.Jake discusses the outcome, costs and lessons he's learnt from having three exhibitions this year...how he approaches venues and whats expected from an exhibitor (this insight is invaluable).Odell talks about having two images go viral, having an editorial published in a surf magazine, a full year of podcasting and how he mentally stays focussed. Its a lesson full conversation in between a morning and afternoon shoot and there's even some listener questions.Have a great New Year everybody, thank you to the Patreons that make production life a little easier, next year your contribution will translate directly to more episodes with the purchase of equipment for Travis and Jake...andI want to say personally a HUGE THANK YOU to you, the listener, we blew past 10,000 listens this year, which is massive in the podcasting world in the category we're in. Katie Jones strolls toward the group of photographers that surround me, her smile radiates good vibes and she greets everyone with a hug....even me, whom she'd only briefly spoken to previously, I lean over and she squeezes hard, the kind of embrace that has meaning...I laugh to myself at how tiny she is and at her little arms trying to wrap me in full. Katie heads up IGERS GoldCoast and can be found any sunrise from the Northern end to the Southern boarder. In this episode she shares how she started photography, how she started IGERS GC, how photography helped during her divorce and what listeners should do to be more social. Katie's a kind, gentle creative that encourages all levels of artist in their journey.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? Ted Grambeau's logo was the first thing I noticed around the time of it's release...I remember not being familiar with him but admiring his logo and the fact the he branded himself...how clever I thought. From then on it was like when you buy a car you think no one else has...drive 100m down the road, you spot another one. Ted's logo would be everywhere for me. I soon became familiar with iconic images the Ted the artist produced...years later I would get to meet Ted the person. In this interview I do my best to stick with a vastly more experienced artist then I, at times during the conversation I felt like Luke Skywalker learning from Yoda...a 6ft plus, deep voiced Jedi passing on principles and concepts to a trainee. You can't not respect the fact that Ted's actively been at the forefront of a mixed genre of surf, travel, fashion, adventure, portrait and documentary photography...genres that weren't a "thing" until his era. There's not much more to say but plug in and listen up, 40 years of knowledge is available direct to your ear buds.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? Is this the end of Chasing Clarity or is it the start? In this Ep its me, Odell and Travis talking candidly about what the future holds for the Chasing Clarity "resource". We discuss the inability for me to handle the work load and the fact that I'm missing episode deadlines. Helicopters circle as Trav gives a fair assumption of what direction to go next. It wouldn't be a Chasing Clarity episode without offering some learnings and in this one we get specific and share our top 5 from the current series of shows.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? I first met Reuben couple years ago, an interesting, confident slightly older than myself, good looking Rooster. Reuben and Aaron were having dinner with a friend of mine, I got a late invite.Reuben was instrumental in me being able to be part of a historic moment in surf history...and allowed me to capture it...for that I'll always be grateful. Jake Brereton and myself are joined by Jared Richards for a brief cameo on this Episode of Chasing Clarity. We discuss Jared's recent trip to hospital as a result of getting folded and what his biggest take aways of the last 12 months are. Jake tells me about his upcoming exhibition with Gold Coast big hitters Mitch Gilmore, Nick Jones and Brad Delaney, he talks about loosing precious memories, what he's learnt in the last 12 months and how he's focused on the path to becoming a full time creative. We broach the topic of respect and discuss why the Gold Coast creative community is going from strength to strength.I also mention an upcoming project I'm working to bring together and of course we talk a little gear.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts about my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? "Who do you belong to mate?' I ask approaching the smiling little kid stood in front of me, "Is that your mum?" I say pointing to Katie. A brief introduction is made and I establish he's there by himself, under his own guise."Your how old!" I yell, "Mate I want some of your youthful genes...imagine how good you'll look when your old and salty like me!"I was unaware of Brodie's health issues and that in fact he hadn't produced the hormone required for growth for the past few years...when I over heard his plight, about an hour later, I apologised profusely..."F off mate!" is what I would've replied with if I were him...Brodie smiled, looked me dead in the eye "It happens." I was humbled by a 17 year old.Brodie of Brodie Clark Media sits with me and discusses his water photography journey, his current exhibition, who inspires him and revels tips to improve your craft I'd never really thought of, or to share. It's an inspiring chat with a young man that has manners, shows respect and a general care for a growing community that love him. Tom Woods and I met at an Aquatech event, I'd gone to support Sean Scott (not that he needs my support) but I'd met him through the Gold Coast Community and we'd talked about getting him on the show....something that hasn't happened as yet...anyway I was perusing the gear, talking shop to one of the staff and Tom approached me, " I know that voice...you've got that podcast right?" We got to talking and I quickly decided he'd be a great guest, something he was shy on. Over the next few months Tom and I have been in contact..I've been a closet fan of his Youtube videos and content he puts out. We met up at his local coast, the Sunshine Coast, a trip I rarely take. "I've got a 92 year old, wheel chair bound, gambling addict Aunty that I need to take for her fix, before I see her let's shoot and record." I suggested. In this episode Tom shares a mountain of knowledge, I talk a little too much but still manage to absorb many of his learnings.Tommy's the real deal and a great example of how chasing clarity has fulfilled some of his dreams and afforded him a lifestyle many are envious of. I've been apprehensive to release this, episode 20.It's always daunting baring a little of your soul on a public forum, how much sharing of your personal life is too much and how much is actually related to the topic of the show, a feel good show about something we do...it's simple, we love the ocean and we enjoy being creative around it. One of topics of discussion is mental health, my anxiety, my partners bipolar and some of the challenges we've faced. I write this to inform you that we briefly touch on these, some deeper topics and offer fore warning. We mostly keep it light, around ocean imagery, my previous guests and our surf photography journey. Travis also introduces a new segment to the show which I don't think I answered properly at the time of the interview.lol. As changes go, I think it'll be a regular spot.It seems a little self indulgent not only releasing an episode about me, but releasing it on my own show....but.....hopefully you find the conversation interesting, a little entertaining and ultimately helpful. Its hard to admit publicly the chinks in the armour I've spent a life time hardening.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts on my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? "I'm the happiest I've ever been!" The Don says to me as we exit the water one afternoon. Once dry and walking to order our favourite Little Mali treat I turn and invite him back on the show to tell the world how he's progressing in his surf photography journey. In this episode I'm stoked to bring you a conversation with an artist that has progressed leaps and bounds since our last conversation nearly a year ago. It brings me joy to see the hard work and sacrifice we all go through as creatives be rewarded. Trav tells me about some of his gaols he's ticked off and some more that are on his hit list. He talks about some of the things he wishes he had of done differently and what he would advise to someone in his previous position. We don't get too technical in this one, but what we do discuss should provide you the stoke to grab your gear, get out there and get some water on ya! David and I overlook my favourite surf break, the most crowded surf break in the world. We're fresh from shooting in the water as I ask David to discuss a weight loss journey he's currently on. He tells me how he got to 200 odd kilo, how he lost over half of it and how he gained the confidence to lose his shirt, walk camera in hand to the waters edge and take part in the pursuit of ocean imagery. This is a feel good tale filled with learnings, David is unique in that he creates with a DSLR from land, a camera in the water and a drone to bring vision from the sky.Turn it up, relax and let the story of Chasing Clarity wash over you.

In this episode of Chasing Clarity I speak to Larisa Cevallos or as she's known to most 'Sweet Ocean'.Sweet Ocean is a GoPro family member, we talk about how she achieved this and what lessons up and comers can take from it.What Larisa lacks in size she makes up for in passion and a pure unadulterated desire to heal the planet. She spoke with joy about her love of whales as a storm rolled in over the ocean disrupting us mid conversation....after a quick dash to shelter she recounted an occasion of frolicking with a playful pod, the experience of a lifetime.

If your anything like me you've had times when you've been at the beach, watched tiny perfect little waves and thought, if I were only a couple inches tall that wave would be so good to surf. In this episode of Chasing Clarity I talk with a man that did the same...but in his case he dared to believe that he could create the perfect machine to not only offer one perfect wave, but five!Aaron Trevis is an Australian inventor destined to leave a legacy, not unlike many Australian inventors. Arron invented the 5 Wave, Surf Lakes, Wave Pool.Listen in as I talk to the ultimate creative and take lessons about following your dreams, embracing your passion and ultimately chasing his clarity.Surf Lakes are actively looking for investors for a final round of funding before turning back on their Yapoon R&D facility and proving the model for double over head, heavy, perfect waves. I for one am very interested in following this investment with the intent to be involved. If your a surfer you need to hear this, if you shoot waves, you'll want to listen...even if you only have a mild interest in wave pools...you'll want to listen to this. The Froth brothers 1 + 2 join me on the show in this episode. They are shy lads out of the water and it was a snap decision to get em on. We had just surfed and shot a little favourite wave across the boarder. Geoff, as always made me look better at surfing than I am.These two are responsible for me getting whole heartedly into IN water photography, coincidently I had met them unplanned at the same spot we spoke at years previous. I had finished a drone and dawn long exposure session, was walking back to my car and noticed some surf photographers bobbing about in the small waves. I'd just purchased a GoPro after looking at Geoff's images online, I returned to the beach with it ready to go and sheepishly ducked under a wave, uncomfortably joining a fraternity I was unfamiliar with. "Hey Odell!"..."Odell!" I heard a voice coming from one of the backlit bodies I'd seen bobbing about. His face was in full shadow and I couldn't make out who it was with the sun shining in my eyes, I politely nodded half swimming away, "Its's me Geoff."In this episode we talk about how the boys got started in Ocean Imagery, what it means to them to shoot and we cover off on some how to's for other creatives.Don't forget that Ace Optics have generously given a discount code, to get your $55 off your purchase listen to the show and use the code at www.aceoptics.com.auI'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts on my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? At 6'3, 120kg Grant Morris, The Aqua Zulu takes up a large portion of the pre dawn light as he approaches my borrowed NSW plated car..."Just fit it in there" he says sounding like a bigger version of Tony Greg, his thick South African accent breaking the dark 5am silence. I flew in the day before and stayed on the other side of the bridge, an hour away. I left at 4am, drove for the first time on Sydney streets and had already, in my short stay managed to piss two local drivers off as I crossed the iconic Sydney Harbour. They weren't shy of blasting their horns..I guess its a way of communicating in the big city, it must be, because everyone does it....often for no reason..I figured they must have heard this show and were saying hello. I waved. This conversation takes place overlooking one of Grant's favourite places to shoot mini's (mini waves) and we discuss all things water photography, surf photography and ocean imagery.Interestingly Grant left a troubled South Africa with nothing more than a suitcase and a dream of a better life. Today, 10 years on, the Aqua Zulu is making others lives better through the act of teaching. Listen in again as another artist chases his clarity and drops some knowledge bombs for you to decipher. Adam Sellars, an Australian Free Diving representative sits with me overlooking a little beach on the Sunshine Coast. I sought out this discussion with Adam after getting smashed in a recent swell while shooting. The overwhelming feeling of being at the oceans mercy and short of breath was magnified as I found myself, heavy camera in hand, eyes closed, swimming toward what I thought was the surface...only it wasn't. Arm outstretched I touched the rocky floor and in an instant became disoriented and tumbled as another set wave sucked my legs from me threw me around again....when I did resurface I gasped, only to cop another on the head. The impact zone and the mighty sea don't give a rats about you, but Adam does, and in this conversation he gives you and I actionable tips to avoid that overwhelming feeling of needing a breath. He's a wealth of knowledge and breaks down in an easy to understand way how the body interacts with water and just how much we are a part of the ocean.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts on my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? The King of Clarity himself joins me in this episode. It was a balmy morning on the Gold Coast, we grabbed our take away coffee and snuck into a little patch of quite that didn't stay quiet long.Questionable parking from the pair of us, we were on constant look out for parking inspectors and foreign distractions pumping their rave beats at an incredibly early hour for such a high tempo beat....none the less we pressed on till the conversation started flowing and the golden tips were plentiful.Mitch Gilmore is the first name many use as their inspiration into the world of Ocean Imagery, he casts a burly shadow when meeting him first hand, tall, built and with facial hair that puts my pre-pubescent growth to shame, plenty are correct with their description of his mild nature.I first met Mitch on the sandy shores of the Gold Coast, unfamiliar with his follower count or his quality GoPro only work, we were introduced by a mutual friend. He's an instant nice guy, welcoming conversation and keen to gel over a mutual love of the ocean it wasn't long until I was hearing his name in my photography circles. In this conversation we not only delve into the life of a GoPro family member but also a little into his family and take a peak behind the curtain of the most requested guest so far.I have a very special competition for you this episode, DMC fins, Mitch and myself have teamed up to offer one lucky listener the chance to win their very own set of DMC fins! They are the fin of choice for both of us and they've gotten me personally out of a couple heavy beatings in the ocean...but thats not all...not only do you receive the DMC fins you'll also get a coaching session with the pair of us on the Gold Coast.Details will be posted in my stories....yep you'll need to be following me on the gram @senseiodellIf you'd like to share your work or thoughts on my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via InstagramIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? In this episode, just in time for another Ocean Imagery Creatives get together, I talk to the face and driving force behind the social event Jake Brereton. We discuss his imagery journey thus far and how a crowded and less than friendly surf line up got him started.Jake tells me what the ocean and shooting only GoPro means to him and if you listen really hard, even shares his beat boxing skills. He's a good man a social guy, always up for a chat and nothing is too much for his mates. Enjoy the show and look for him at the next gathering.Details of the meeting: 24th Feb 2019, 5:30am, Burleigh Beach. All levels welcome, its a social gathering as well as a creative one.Swell predictions are MASSIVE, conditions will be assessed on the day. With cyclone Oma and Huey pumping us overhead barrels at the moment and double the size forecast it could be a day on the sand for me and many others. I'll be running around collecting audio for the show so please don't be afraid to say hello.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts on my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? "What's up with your sunglasses in the water"..."Are they just regular sunnies?" I ask Scott Amos as we settle in for a conversation next to another Gold Coast body of water.Scott's distinguishable from other surf photographers by his sun-cap and Oakley sunglasses, years of constant glare have left his eyes vulnerable to direct sunlight "Never wear the polarised lenses" he says, "You can't see the rear lcd of the camera!"Previously shy and stand offish in the water Scott tells me how an injury brought him from surfing to surf photography and now how his favourite thing to photograph is wave riders and the stoke it provides. He tells me of a recent run in with a surfer and their fins, his unique 3 camera set up and a charity thats brought him a huge amount of joy.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts on my show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? 16 years of filming some of the best surfers on the planet is what Craig Halstead brings to this episode. It's scorching hot on an early morning over looking the famous Kirra right hander, today a waist high, fuller tide swell crumbles along the famed point. "There hasn't been a decent swell for a while now!" calls an older gentleman hunched over in pain and shuffling toward me. "I still get to the beach at 4:30 in the morning...every morning." He continues, now closer.Craig directs me to a seating area and we begin our conversation for the show. Just like the daily clips he creates, his penchant for story telling is matched by few and he begins with some straight away.A lot can be learned by listening to those with far more experience, I hope you'll take away as much as I did sitting with one of the areas long serving stalwarts.I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts on my new show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, on your stories or with a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest? Travis "Don" Johnson's head bobs just above the water in the impact zone. This is where he's most happy, this is where I meet him the morning of our non-scheduled recording."The Don" a flamboyant child of the 80's had attended the first ever Water Rats event two weeks previous and had expressed his desire to be among the likes of Zac Noyle in the line up of Pipeline."Thats a pretty big goal big fella." I remarked, "I'd be keen to hear about it".Travis is a relative new comer to the world of ocean imagery, specifically surf photography , he has a hunger I recognise. In this conversation we pick apart that hunger and take on board the many lessons he's learnt from the likes of his idol's Ted Grambeau and Corey Wilson. You can't help but be inspired to get your fins in the water and start licking your lens once you've listened to Travis's passion for the craft and his determination to chase that formidable thing....I'd love to see your work and hear your thoughts on my new show 'Chasing Clarity' Please get in touch via Instagram - @senseiodellIf you want to help the show grow it's awesome to subscribe, great to rate on your podcast player BUT amazing if you share the show with someone, your stories or a group.Want to suggest a guest or be a guest?
