Ludmila Golovine is the President and CEO of MasterWord Services, Inc., a top-ranked LSP globally. She has dedicated over 30 years to the language services industry, and for the past 15 years has been an international speaker/advocate for language rights and social justice. She is the Strategic Partnerships Manager for the Global Community Programs of Women in Localization, a founding member of the Global Coalition of Language Rights, member of TBAT (Texas Business Against Human Trafficking), active participant in the UN Global Compact Initiative, and chairs the Advisory Subcommittee for the Translation and Interpretation Program at the Houston Community College. Her work has been recognized by numerous awards, including California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) Trainer of the Year Award 2021, Houston Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business Award, and Congressional Recognition G7 “Excellence in International Service” award.
Dr. Bill Rivers is Principal at WP Rivers & Associates. A former Russian/English translator and interpreter, Russian teacher, academic researcher and administrator, and for-profit and non-profit executive, he has more than 30 years’ experience in language advocacy and capacity at the national level, with significant experience in culture and language for economic development and national security in the Intelligence Community, private and academic sectors, and publications in second and third language acquisition research, proficiency assessment, program evaluation, and language policy development and advocacy. His company is contracted by the ALC for advocacy support.

Amanda Seewald is the Executive Director of JNCL-NCLIS and the owner of MARACAS Language Programs and Learning Kaleidoscope Educational Consulting. With over 20 years of experience in multilingual curriculum development and early language learning, she works with schools across the U.S. and Europe to build globally engaged programs.Her expertise is in multilingual/multicultural curriculum and instruction, focused on early language learning as well as dual language immersion education. Amanda is a past President of FLENJ, former NECTFL board member, and recipient of the 2020 NECTFL Nelson H. Brooks Award for Outstanding Leadership.
She speaks Spanish, French, and Japanese, and regularly presents at national conferences. As an advocate for language education, Amanda works with federal and state legislative offices to garner support for legislation and funding. Her focus is also on empowering advocates through training and experiential opportunities. Amanda’s advocacy work in New Jersey led to the signing of the Seal of Biliteracy into law in 2016. It is Amanda’s hope that through engaging and dynamic language programming we will have a multilingual future for all children.

Rachel Rossi is a former Director of the Office for Access to Justice in the U.S. Department of Justice and previously served as Deputy Associate Attorney General and the DOJ’s first Anti-Hate Crime Coordinator. A career public defender in Los Angeles, she later served as Counsel to Senator Richard Durbin, helping lead efforts on the First Step Act, and as Counsel to the House Judiciary Crime Subcommittee. In 2020, she became the first former public defender to run for L.A. County District Attorney, earning nearly half a million votes. Rossi later served as Legal Director for the REFORM Alliance. She holds a law degree from Pepperdine University and is the daughter of immigrants from the Dominican Republic and Greece.

Dr. Holly Ann Silvestri has significant experience in the field of translator and interpreter training in addition to running her own language service provider agency as well as freelancing for other agencies and government entities. Currently she works as Senior Coordinator for Translation, Training, and Curriculum at the National Center for Interpretation at the University of Arizona. Her working languages are Spanish, French and English. She is a founding member of the American Association of Interpreters and Translators in Education as well as Chair of the Public Relations Committee for SAFE AI. She is also a member of the American Translators Association and the Arizona Translators and Interpreters.

Janis Palma has been a federally-certified judiciary interpreter since 1981. She is also certified by NAJIT (the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators) as an English-Spanish interpreter and translator, and by the State of Texas as a Master Licensed Court Interpreter.
She holds a Ph.D. in Language Studies, a Master’s in Legal Studies, and a Master’s in Puerto Rican and Caribbean History and Literature. She is now enrolled in the Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design Ph.D. program at Clemson University.
She has been teaching judiciary interpreting through professional associations, private organizations, higher education institutions, and government agencies since 1986. As an independent researcher her interest is focused right now on the intersections between judiciary interpreting theory and practice, law and legal language, but is also starting to explore the rhetoric of justice for language minorities in the U.S.
Her most recent published work includes “Literary metaphors in legal English and their conveyance to Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals in the context of U.S. courts.” (Oct. 2024) International Journal for the Semiotics of Law.; “When interpreting does not remove the language barrier: interpreter ethics at odds with due process rights in U.S. courts.” Texas Hispanic Journal of Law & Policy, U. of Texas at Austin Law School, Vol. 29, Spring 2023. Danny Serna is a Spanish Certified Medical Interpreter with more than 20 years of experience, and he currently serves as the Cultural Services Manager at Logansport Memorial Hospital in Logansport, Indiana. Before coming to LMH in 2020, Danny worked as a freelance medical interpreter in Madison, WI for entities such as The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Meriter Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, Dean Health Care systems to name a few. He was a staff medical interpreter at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and now resides in Logansport, IN. Danny earned his undergraduate degree in Spanish Language and Literature as well as French Language and Literature from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He obtained his Master’s in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Danny is passionate about language access for optimal patient care and about giving back to the professional field of interpreting.
Miguel Juarez Vidales is a National Certified Medical Interpreter with over 13 years of experience in language services. He holds a BA in Spanish from Boise State University and has worked in various fields, including education, medical interpreting, and interpreting for nonprofit organizations and state government agencies. Originally from Mexico, Miguel now resides in Nampa, Idaho. Currently, Miguel works full-time as a Program Specialist at the Idaho Council on Developmental Disabilities, where he combines his interpreting skills with advocacy to advance language access. He is also an interpreter trainer and is actively involved in policy-making and local organizations that promote social justice and language access in Idaho. In his free time, Miguel mentors aspiring interpreters, providing guidance and support as they navigate the path to national certification. In addition to his training role, Miguel is a conference interpreter and the owner of Juárez Translations, a small company offering a variety of language services, providing high-quality interpretation and translation services across different sectors.

Born in Zoogocho, Oaxaca, Odilia Romero is the co-founder and executive director of Comunidades Indígenas en Liderazgo (CIELO). She is also an independent interpreter of Zapotec, Spanish, and English for indigenous communities in Los Angeles and throughout California. She has more than two decades of experience organizing indigenous migrant communities, and advocating for language access. Her knowledge and experience are highly
regarded, with multiple academic publications, awards, and lectures in universities across the United States. In 2024, she was listed on the ‘L.A. Influential’ list, for her work eradicating indigenous stereotypes. Ms.Romero has published on the challenges of training indigenous interpreters, developing women’s leadership, and preparing a new generation of youth. Her work has also been featured in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, Vogue, Democracy Now!, Quien, El País, TED X, Forbes, and the Day Emmy award-winning series Pan Y Circo "Nadie es ilegal migrantes de Ida y Vuelta" with Diego Luna.

Natalya Mytareva, M.A., CoreCHI, ICE-CCP, is Executive Director of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, and a Commissioner of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). In 2000-2013, Natalya was Communications Director at the International Institute of Akron, a refugee resettlement agency in Ohio. She developed and taught several courses for healthcare and court interpreters, with the focus on languages of lesser diffusion. She is a recipient of the 2023 Language Access Champion award from the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care. Natalya is a Russian interpreter/translator and started her career as instructor of interpretation/translation courses at Volgograd State University (Russia) in 1991. She holds a combined BA/MA degree from VSU in Philology & Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Carola Lehmacher-Richez is a seasoned freelance translator and interpreter with over 15 years of experience in government and industry. She holds a master’s in Conference Interpreting from Glendon College, York University, and degrees in Translation Studies from the Universidad de Buenos Aires. She is a federally certified court interpreter (FCCI), a certified court interpreter for Spanish and a registered court interpreter for German for the State of Georgia, as well as a certified medical interpreter for German. On top of her work with the courts, Carola works as a conference interpreter for various local and international clients, and is one of the voices of a major news network where she interprets live shows that are broadcasted to Spanish-speaking viewers. Moreover, she is a licensed trainer of “The Community Interpreter®” and dedicates many hours to volunteer as Chair of the Ethics and Standards Committee of AAITE, as Advisory Member to the Georgia Commission on Court Interpreters, and as President of AAIT, the Georgia chapter of ATA.

Ana has been an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Georgia for 11 years teaching three online courses she authored including the Professional Interpreter in Education Certificate course, the Professional Interpreter in Special Education Certificate course, and the Professional Translator in Education Certificate course. As part of her doctoral studies, Ana and a team of Subject Matter Experts are developing a national certification pilot test for spoken language interpreters in education.

Janis Palma is an English-Spanish interpreter and translator with over 40 years of experience. She became federally certified as a judiciary interpreter in 1981, certified by NAJIT as an interpreter and translator in 2004, and is licensed by the State of Texas as a Master Court Interpreter as of 2017. Janis has been actively involved in the training and education of judiciary interpreters since 1986, specializing in consecutive interpreting techniques. Andrea Henry has been active in healthcare interpreting for 23 years, beginning her career in 1994 as a freelance interpreter for Pacific Interpreters and later as a full-time remote interpreter at their headquarters in Oregon. She earned her B.A. from the University of Oregon in Spanish and International Studies with a minor in Ethnic Studies. After relocating to Atlanta, Andrea worked for six years in development and management of interpreter services departments for two hospital systems.
Together with her multidisciplinary study team, Andrea developed and validated the CFIE tool to measure Complexity and Fatigue in Interpreted Encounters.
Andrea regularly presents on advanced interpreter practice and mental fatigue research. One of the most satisfying aspects of Andrea’s career has been working as a staff interpreter at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta while carrying out research on interpreter mental fatigue.

Eliane Sfeir-Markus is a court certified English-Arabic (Levantine) Interpreter in the state of PA, and an Arabic Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI). She is an adjunct professor at Widener University Delaware Law School, an Interpreter Expert with Language Services Associates, and an instructor at the De La Mora Institute of Interpretation. Eliane is also a licensed Community Interpreter Trainer. She joined the Board of Directors of the Delaware Valley Translators Association (DVTA) in 2017, and currently serves as the president of DVTA. Eliane is a certified coach and speaker with the John Maxwell Team. Eliane is a trilingual professional; she speaks Arabic, English and French. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Translation from Holy Spirit University in Lebanon.
Eliane’s interpretation skills, public speaking skills and her dedication to the interpretation profession have earned her the recognition to train new and advanced interpreters and to lead many presentations and training sessions.

Robert has a very extensive background. Robert has a bachelor's degree in Bible with a Spanish minor from Abilene, Christian University, a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from Rutgers
Graduate School of Criminal Justice; two graduate degrees in theology from Princeton
Theological Seminary (M.Div. and Th.M.); and completed ten graduate courses in
linguistics, psychometrics, and ethnolinguistic/ethnographic research methods at the
Graduate School of Education of Rutgers University toward an M.Ed. in Language
Education.
He was staff to the New Jersey Supreme Court Task Force on Interpreters and
Translation Services (1982-1985) and managed the New Jersey Judiciary's program to
ensure equal access to courts for linguistic minorities from its inception in December
1985 until his retirement at the end of 2008.
After serving as staff to the New Jersey Supreme Court Task Force on Interpreter and Translation Services, he founded and managed the NJ Judiciary's language access program for 23 years.
Robert served on the team coordinated by the National Center for State Courts that formed the Consortium for State Court Interpreter Certification, then chaired its Technical Committee (which oversaw the testing program) and served on the Executive Committee for 13 years.
With language experts in many other languages, coordinated the development or revision of certification tests in about twenty languages.
Robert Joe served on the following advisory boards:
1. Court Interpretation: Challenges for the 1990s, and Court Telephone
Interpretation Services: Pilot Program, both administered by the National Center
for State Courts;
2. Introducing Immigrants to the United States Justice System, a project of the
American Judicature Society; and
3. The Master of Arts Program in Legal Interpreting, Department of Spanish and
Italian, College of Charleston.
He is married to Caryl Raye Tipton, a church choir director, singer, concert manager,
voice coach, office manager, and self-employed businessperson. He has four children
and four grandchildren. He is an elder in his church (First Presbyterian, Bordentown)
where he serves as Mission Commissioner.

Rachel E. Arianna graduated in 2000 in Western New York with a communication and graphic arts degree. She honed her interpreting skills through hands-on experience and training in the mental health, education, legal, and child care fields. She currently is a Master Certified Court Interpreter for North Carolina, and is also a Certified Medical Interpreter. Past experiences include working as a Staff Interpreter for the 11th District of North Carolina, the Federal Public Defender's office and the Johnston County Mental Health Department as an interpreter and consultant. She also has experience in presenting at conferences, including NAJIT and ATA. Arianna is currently an editor/writer for NAJIT's publication Proteus, and was Editor-in-Chief from 2017 to 2019. She also published a book, Mental Health Interpreting: Unique Challenges, Practical Solutions, which is available on Amazon.

Natalya Mytareva, M.A., CoreCHI™, is Executive Director and one of the founding Commissioners of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), a U.S. 501(c)6 organization whose mission is to develop and administer national certification programs for healthcare interpreters. Her duties at CCHI include coordination of the Commission’s business operations, public relations, and communication with stakeholders as well as test development and content management of CCHI exams. CCHI is a virtually operated organization since its inception in 2009, with legal HQ in Washington, DC, and staff telecommuting from across the U.S.
Natalya also serves as Administrative Commissioner of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the authority on accreditation standards for professional certification programs in the U.S.
In 2000-2013, Natalya was Communications Director and Refugee Services Director at the International Institute of Akron, a non-profit refugee resettlement agency in Ohio. At the local and state levels, she engaged in advocating for and ensuring that immigrant and refugee populations receive culturally appropriate services from healthcare, law enforcement, and social services agencies. Additionally, she developed and taught several academic, workforce development and continuing education courses for healthcare and court interpreters, including being an adjunct faculty at Kent State University (OH).
Prior to moving to the U.S., Natalya was a senior, tenured instructor at Volgograd State University (VSU, Russia) teaching interpretation, translation, and linguistics courses in 1991-1996. She earned her combined BA/MA degree in Philology and Teaching English as a Foreign Language from VSU.
Natalya works from her home office in Green, OH.

Barrie J. Roberts has worked as the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Administrator for two southern California Superior Courts, working with judges, court staff, attorneys, neutrals and community mediation organizations to provide high-quality alternatives to trial. She is the co-creator, along with Maria Ceballos-Wallis and Marjory Bancroft (Cross-Cultural Communications) of Foundations in Conflict Resolution and ADR for Interpreters, the first online training of its kind to provide ADR training for interpreters. Barrie also created “Mediation as a Second Language” (MSL) courses to combine ADR and ESL for international students at UC Berkeley. Her publications include Conflict Resolution Training for the Classroom: What Every ESL Teacher Needs to Know, University of Michigan Press, E-Book Single (2020). Before ADR, Barrie was a staff attorney with Legal Services of Northern California, Inc.

Those she had the honor and pleasure of guiding have gone on to make professional and career changes, strengthening their resolve and/or skills, helping them identify and seek extra training. Some of her mentees have gone on to become workshop leaders, create and implement career growth paths, change their specializations, discover new interests.
While president of two Florida ATA Chapters, Gio was involved in providing training through workshops she led and bringing outside speakers. Gauging membership interest, market needs and desired subjects became a natural process that lead to identifying solutions and possible professional shifts.

This week we speak with Janis Palma on her career as a legal interpreter
Janis Palma has been a federally certified English-Spanish judiciary interpreter since 1981. Her experience includes conference work in the private sector and seminar interpreting for the U.S. State Department. She has been a consultant for various higher education institutions, professional associations, and government agencies on judiciary interpreting and translating issues. She worked as an independent contractor for over 20 years in federal, state and immigration courts around the U.S. before taking a full-time job. Janis joined the U.S. District Courts in Puerto Rico as a staff interpreter in April 2002 and retired in 2017. She now lives in San Antonio, Texas, embracing the joys of being a grandmother. She also enjoys volunteering for her professional associations, has been on the SSTI and TAJIT Boards, and is currently on the NAJIT Board of Directors.

Andrea has been active in healthcare interpreting for 24 years, beginning her career in 1994 as a freelance interpreter for Pacific Interpreters and later as a fulltime remote interpreter at their company headquarters in Oregon. She earned her B.A. from the University of Oregon in Spanish and International Studies with a minor in Ethnic Studies. After relocating to Atlanta, Andrea worked for six years in development of interpreter services departments for two hospital systems. She has received over 150 hours of interpreting education, attended 30+ conferences both nationally and internationally, and regularly presents on a variety of healthcare interpreting topics. One of the most satisfying aspects of Andrea’s career has been serving the families and staff as a full-time interpreter at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta while carrying out this research on measuring interpreter mental fatigue.
Carola Lehmacher-Richez is a multi-lingual freelance translator and interpreter with over ten years of experience working with government and industry at executive and operational level.
She grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, speaking German and Spanish, and was educated in a multicultural environment, learning English as a young child and studying French after high school.
Carola holds two university degrees in translations studies granted by the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Additionally, she obtained a Spanish ˂˃ German interpreting diploma (2005) and concluded a 3-year Spanish ˂˃ English interpreting course (2008). In 2013 and 2014, she taught 3 interpretation courses - namely Interpretation I and II, and a translation workshop - at the Universidad de Buenos Aires.
After moving to Atlanta in 2015, she completed the Spanish ˂˃ English Legal Interpreter Certificate Program at the University of Georgia and the 40-hour WLTG Core Medical Interpreter Training Program. Carola became a certified court interpreter for Spanish and a registered court interpreter for German for the State of Georgia.
Carola also works as a conference interpreter for various local and international clients, and she is one of the voices of a major news network where she interprets live shows that are broadcasted through this news channel to Spanish-speaking viewers.
She is the current President of the Atlanta Association of Interpreters and Translators (AAIT).

Paul Panusky is an attorney, mediator, interpreter, and presenter in Atlanta, GA.
Paul graduated Magna Cum Laude and in the top 10% of his class from Georgia State University, College of Law. Paul is an inductee into the order of the Coif and earned awards in contracts, forensic evidence, and as the best trial advocate. Paul also graduated with highest honors for Pro Bono work. The Panusky Law Firm currently focuses on criminal defense and family law but also handles a variety of other types of cases including premises liability, contract drafting, landlord/tenant, and ADA issues.
Paul holds generalist (NIC) and educational (Ed: K-12) interpreter certifications as well as a specialist certification in legal/court interpreting (SC:L) and is one of only 10 interpreters in Georgia and 338 interpreters in the country to hold an SC:L. Paul has interpreted all stages of civil and criminal matters in both state and Federal level courts. He has since focused his interpreting on a variety of legal settings such as trials, hearings, mediation, depositions, and specializing as an interpreter for counsel and consultant.
Paul has presented at conferences across the county on various topics including discourse analysis, ethics, interpreter processing, legal/courtroom interpreting, and working with an attorney as interpreter for counsel. Paul has presented to audiences such as students at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, certified interpreters, attorneys at the Department of Justice, and the National Legal Aid Defenders Association national conference.
