When we hit roadblocks, or walls, in our lives, how do we get past them? In Luke 18:35-43 the story of the Blind Beggar makes us consider whether being on the outside of walls actually gets us closer to God.
What is Jesus all about? Luke Chapter 13: 31-35 shows us the mission and the heart of Jesus. Whether you struggle with sickness, addiction, loneliness, depression - there is nothing that is too great for Jesus to handle. His mission on earth was both physical and spiritual and reveals God's heart for his lost people. But will we allow ourselves to be gathered up? What choice will we make?
In Luke Chapter 10 we read the story of Jesus sending out "the 72" to spread the news that the Kingdom of God is near. What meaning does this passage have for the purpose of our lives as Christians? Pastor Stephen leads us as we consider what it means to not only be a people who are called in - but also sent out.
Do you want to know how much you are loved? In Luke 9:51 we see that Jesus "resolutely set out for Jerusalem." Jesus pursued the cross with resolve. That's love. In this series we will walk with Jesus on that journey to the cross and uncover what this love looks like.
I know best. I want to do things my way. I am entitled to live my truth. WIth these words, we crown ourselves as kings and queens of our lives. What if there was another way to the real truth -- God's way? This week we delve into the story of King Josiah to learn what to do when you find the truth even when you weren't looking for it.
Most of us who go to church act just like those who don't. And we don't care. Not really. But God does.
In the days of Judah's evil and worst king -- Manasseh -- the people of God came to worship and behave just like the unbelievers around them. They were worse, actually. They failed to be what God had created them to be: a "light to the nations," called to show that God's way is the best, and only, way to life. Their failure could not be ignored by God.
But even in this terrible period in the history of God's people, there is a message of hope for the "worst of the worst" among us, even when the "worst of the worst" happens.
Where does your allegiance lie? We give our allegiance to all kinds of things. People, ideas, systems, cravings....Our allegiances matter, they shape who we are. This is part of the ongoing story of humanity. This Sunday Pastor Stephen will look at King Ahab of Israel and we can ask of ourselves, "Where does our allegiance lie?"
We know that God doesn't hide His will from His people. The problem is rarely that we don't know what is right, the problem is that we so often choose our own path. After King Solomon died, things went downhill fast. Pastor Stephen will show us how Solomon's son King Rehoboam missed the wise choices that were right in front of him.
King Solomon! He was the wisest! The richest! The celebrity king of the tenth century BC...but for all his wisdom, wealth and celebrity, Solomon had a heart that was divided. Our lives are not so different. We may not be wealthy kings and queens, but in a modern world of unfettered autonomy we are often faced with the same challenges. Even with everything at his fingertips, Solomon was left with what he called "meaninglessness." We will use the truths in his story to find deeper meaning instead.
It's one thing to believe we follow a powerful and benevolent King, but do we trust that King? King David was the greatest of all the kings of Israel, but he's also a tragic figure. He is a beautiful example to us of a man who longed to worship God, but who also made terrible mistakes. This week we will look at a relatable moment where David failed to trust God.
We love to be the kings and queens of our own domains. Oftentimes our pride takes the form of great confidence, but sometimes that same pride exhibits itself as insecurity. King Saul shows us what it was like to reject the true King of kings and fall victim to his own insecurity.
How we see Jesus' coming is often dependent on the posture of our heart. In Matthew Chapter 2, we see two profoundly different perspectives on the coming of Jesus - the wise men and King Herod. These two perspectives mark the contrasting ways that we often respond to God's Son. Pastor Stephen unpacks this passage and helps us examine the posture of our own hearts.
Typically when folks think of the Christmas story, they may imagine a scene of a small young family, bathed in warm campfire; surrounded by barnyard animals; Bing Crosby singing in the background. While this image may evoke nostalgia and warmth, what was this experience like from God's perspective? What did Jesus' birth, life, and ascension mean for the first century church? In Revelation 12, the apostle John described what Jesus' birth was like from Heaven's vantage point as he wrote to those who were enduring hardship and difficulty in life.
What do your eyes see at Christmastime? What does your heart long for? Many of us spend our entire lives looking for good things, and often finding them, but missing God in the process. In Luke Chapter 2 we meet two people, Simeon and Anna, who spent their entire lives waiting to see the salvation of God arrive. Let's unpack what it looks like to wait for the things of God.
