Pulp Legend Will Murray talks about his latest volume of Sherlock Holmes' wild adventures (#5). Will is one of the most prolific writers in the New Pulp movement both in fact and ficton. This anthology contains 10 new Holmes stories written in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle that could have been written by Doyle himself. This makes a terrific summer read fo Sherlock holmes fans. Elizabeth Bissette is the grand niece of pulp great Norvell Paige who was the writer of the dark pulp hero The Spider. She and Will Murray join me to discuss Norvell's life and work. From his early days in journalism, through the run of The Spider series to his final years in government service writing for the Atomc Energy Commission, Norvell had an active and challening career. We had a wonderful discusson about one of the great pulp writers. Enjoy!
Pulp master Will Murray has published a collection of some of his latest Sherlock Holmes stories Iin volume 4 of his series. These stories are more traditional Sherlock Holmes stories different from the ones in Vo. 3 which interacted with the story War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. Will has also recently published a book of Spicy Zepplin Stories that is highly popular and makes a fun summer read.

Author Jeff Deischer has writeen volume 12 in his Doc Brazen Series entitled Sea Change. This is a Doc Savage pastiche that takes place in the modern day and deals with a REAL recently discovered sea anomaly: Rogue Waves. Doc and his associates must discover what has led to multiple descructive Rogue Waves before Australia and South East Asia are decmated. This is a fun romp and is an excellent story. DO not miss it!

Jeff deischer has published World Piece the 11th volume in his Doc Brazen series. This volume is LOADED with Eater Eggs that any Doc Brazen afficionado (i.e., Doc Savage-pastiche fan) will appreciate. Jeff explores where Doc Brazen was born, how Doc Brazen was educated and why he did not initially develop personal relationships and start a family. Pulp legend Will Murray has published a new Tarzan novel in which the Lord of the Jungle travels back to Mars to prevent an invasion of Earth! This is his second Barsoom story with Tarzan and it is even better than the first. Will also has a new anthology of the wild adventures of Sherlock Holmes in the next couple of weeks. Keep them coming, Will!
Bill Tracy is a retired engineer with a passion for hard sci fi, imaginative fantasy, and LGBTQ themes. He has a Dissolutionverse series of Three novels 6 novellas and 3 short stories. His newest series is The Biomass Conflux the first volume of which is Of Mycelium and Men. Generational colonization ships find an earth- like planet that has been previously colonized by a sentient fungal biomass. This is a hard science story with fantasy elements.
Bill has been a prolific author and has his own publishing company (Space Wizard, Science, Fantasy). He also has a Kickstarter project where you can great some deals on up and coming books over the next year.
The Mycelium book is an excellent read and there will be two more books in the trilogy. There is a wide variety of story genres for almost any SciFi or Fantasy taste. Check him out!

One of my favorite authors, Jeff Deischer, has published the eighth volume in his Doc Brazen pulp pastiche series, Element of Surprise. This is a classic pulp story with lots of action, adventure, a world-threatening menace, and a mystery that needs to be solved. Pulp aficionados will not want to miss this one! We also discuss the further plans for the Doc Brazen stories.
The Destroyer series began in 1971 and has been one of the most successful adventure hero series of al time. The character of Remo Williams was the brainchild of Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir Both of whom have since passed on. Today, Warren's son, Devin Murphy is the keeper of the Destroyer literary bequest. This series has been carried on over the last 50 years by several "ghost writers" including Molly Cochran, Will Murray, Jim Mullaney, Gerald Welch, and others. The series was always a source of excitement, adventure, social commentary and satire.
Devin is in the process of publishing new Destroyer stories and having the entire oeuvre converted to Kindle electronic format.
If you have not read the Destroyer series IT IS A MUST for Pulp Fans. The 3rd novel in the series Chinese Puzzle is a good starting point.

There is a new high-quality fanzine The Shadowed Circle, devoted to The Shadow and all things "shadowy" published by Steve Donoso and Tim King. Steve and Tim ae BIG Shadow fans in all incarnations: Rado, Pulp, Comics, Films, TV, etc. The articles are substantial and detailed. Any pulp fan will enjoy this magazine. Author Malcolm Deeley began writing Doc Savage stories when he was a teenager. Over the years he honed his creative powers and in 2015, he started the Doc Talos website to showcase his wares. These stories are homages to Doc Savage (and Lester Dent) but especially to the vision of Philip Jose Farmer in his seminal and shocking book A Feast Unknown. Malcolm wanted to take some of the concepts that Phil had created and explored them in greater depth.

Pulp legend Will Murray has completed his third Spider novel (Scourge of the Scorpion). In my opinion it is his best Spider novel yet! This is a cross-over story involving another pulp vigilante (The Skull Killer) with a complex plot that has elements of pulp action, horror, mystery, detective work, and several plot twists that will keep you guessing. The hardcover version has a novella (The Scorpion's Snare) involving a crossover between pulp heroes Red Finger and Operator 5 which is tangentially related to the main novel. The hardcover also has an afterword that explains some of Will's creative process of weaving together Scourge of the Scorpion. WARNING! The afterword has several spoilers so don't read it until you have read the main novel. You will be glad you did. Don't miss this one!

Award winning editor and writer Jaime Ramos has published a story Golgotha: City of Skulls about a psychic detective (John Normandy) who is searching for the kidnapped daughter of the mayor of the noir city of Golgotha. This is the first of a series of John Normandy stories. Jaime also edited the anthology Singularity: Rise of the Post Humans which won a Pulp Factory award for best anthology. Jaime is currently working on a graphic novel featuring his original character The Liberator which will be published by next year. He also is working on a 3-volume graphic novel for his character The Red Spectre. One of the overarching themes in his work is fighting human trafficking and slavery against all odds.

Former Army Counterintelligence agent and author S. W. O'Connell has written a historical novel about the Age of Charlemagne Envoy of the Lord which is not only filled with action and intrigue but is a time travel story which is deals with political and metaphysical themes and is historically accurate. Scott and I went to Xavier High School in Manhattan in the 1960s. He has written several historical novels on the American Revolution and is now branching out into other areas of history. Pulp legend Will Murray has just published a new book on the original radio and pulp versions of The Shadow, Master of Mystery: The Rise of the Shadow. The book has interviews with many of the people who contributed to the creation of The Shadow back in the 1930s including Walter Gibson, John Nanovic, Theodore Tinsley, Edd Cartier, and Graves Gladney. There is even an interview with Jim Steranko! The book also contains an interview section by Walter Gibson in which he explains the origin of The Shadow's Girasol Fire-Opal ring!
Will and I discuss several topics includng some exclusive revelations about upcoing publications by Steeger Books and upcoming books of his that are planned for the next few months. He has another collection of Sherlock Holmes stories and Will is finally going to collect some of his Cthulhu Mythos stories which are IMHO some of his best work!
Will is also planning a second volume on The Shadow concentrating on the story of the pulp version of The Shadow to be entitled The Dark Avenger that will likely be published next year.
Will has an ongoing column in the magazine Retrofan which can be found in bookstores and comic shops as well as on line at www.twomorrows.com.

In 1970, Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir published a story they had been working on for several years Created: The Destroyer. Over the next year they published volumes 2 and 3 in the series and gave us Remo Williams, Chiun, the history of the House of Sinanju (history's greatest assassins), the secret government agency CURE, and a stable of colorful villains that have progressed through over 150 novels, a film, a TV pilot and kept fandom enthralled for over 50 years.
Gerald Welch became acquainted with Warren Murphy and with Warren's blessing has created a series of novels of Sinanju's second generation. Gerald has taken up the mantle that Warren and Dick had begun and has given us a series of Legacy novels that continues the story through the 21st Century. Gerry's work is a worthy successor to that of the original authors and of the other writers in the Destroyer who came after them.
Homecoming is a well crafted and exciting story that every fan of Remo and Chiun must read. And Gerry has several more stories in the pipeline. In fact, the entire Legacy series is must reading for Destroyer fans. Don't miss any of them!

Fred Adams is a retired English professor and a prolific pup writer who specializes in complex adventures with moral dilemmas and supernatural overtones. His latest novel Fangs of the Sea is a rollicking 18th Century sea story Involving Vampires, Zombies, Pirates, Spanish Caribbean Colonists on the lam from the Inquisition, a knowledgeable (though maverick) priest, and a Rogue British Naval Captain who come together in a conflict in which the fate of the world is at stake. As is typical of Fred's work, there is lots of action, horror, the problem that doing the "right" thing may not always be the "good" thing. It is a fun read and it makes you think while you are enjoying yourself.
Fred also Just had another volume in his CO Jones series entitled Homecoming, USA where the former government agent turned psychic private detective goes to rural Pennsylvania to investigate an unorthodox attempt to bring down the local mob.
He also has a non-fiction book due out in July Edith Wharton: American Gothic in which he explores the themes in Edith Wharton's stories that coincide with psychological "vampirism." In the 1960s, Philip Jose Farmer began an in-depth study of the Tarzan stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs to find the true story behind the actual person upon whom Tarzan of the Apes was based. This included historical studies, reviews of Burke's Peerage, and delving into the scientific bases of a feral man raised by apes. He also started putting out "feelers" to obtain an interview with the actual man upon whom Tarzan was based. He eventually succeeded in obtaining a 15 minute interview with this person.
This book edited by Paul Spiteri and Mike Croteau collects all the known documentation of Farmer's investigations and the text of the interview. There is some material collected here that has never been published before. It also includes some of Farmer's notes from "The Magic Filing Cabinet" that have never been seen before.
Here is the material that inspired Phil Farmer to write his definitive biography of Lord Greystoke, Tarzan Alive and his novels A Feast Unknown, The Mad Goblin, Lord of the Trees, and Lord Tyger.

We have been waiting for this novel since Phil Farmer announced it back in 1983. Win Eckert has taken several fragments from Phil's "Magic Filing Cabinet" and is fleshing out the story using them while following Phil's original outline. Meanwhile, Win has added elements from other stories from Phil and others which he lists in the podcast) with the intention of also speculating about unanswered questions in those works (including Up Earth's Center. I have been waiting for almost 40 years for this story and I am so excited about its up coming publication.

Gerald Welch collaborated with the legendary Warren Murphy on the Legacy series which extends the universe of Remo Williams, the Destroyer and is little father Chiun. Jerry is one of the biggest Destroyer fans around and has not only been writing the stories about Remo's Viking daughter, Freyja Williams, and his Navy Seal son, Stone Smith, as they carry the Sinanju Legacy into the 21st Century. Crime novelist Gary Phillips has given us a new novel that features a fictionalized version of the real life adventurer Matthew Henson who was a black arctic explorer who is believed to have been the first man to make it to the North Pole even before Commodore Peary who was on the same expedition. Henson was a larger-than-life character in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s. This novel (Matthew Henson and the Ice Temple of Harlem) has a strong pulpy feel and includes many 'Easter eggs' including cameos by Jimmy Dale (aka the gray Seal) and some actual persons rom that era such as Bessie Coleman, Harlem numbers racket Queen Stephanie St. Clair, scientist Nikola Tesla, and notorious mobster Dutch Schultz. The story is about an attempt by Dutch Schultz to take over the numbers racket in Harlem by the use of a secret device related to a discovery Henson had made in Greenland in 1909. This is a fun romp full of action and giving you a flavor of what it was like in Harlem back in the late 1020s.

Author Jeff Deischer gives us a high octane story about what happens when the gods go to war with each other while the Mystery Men and Women of the Sentinels try to intervene. There is a lot of action and combat in this story along with detailed speculation about how the various Pantheons of the Greeks, the Norsemen, the Egyptians, and other ethnic groups are interrelated to each other. The fighting is virtually non-stop. There are also a few surprises along the way. The characters are well developed and the denouement is very satisfying. I think this is the best novel in this series so far. Don't miss this one!

Pulp expert and prolific author Jeff Deischer gives us a volume two in his Heritage Universe series using pastiches and Public Domain characters based on the Mystery men from the Charlton Comics of the 1960s. "Tag, you Are It" takes place in the mid-1960s and is chock-full of action, mystery, and high adventure. Those of us who remember the Charlton heroes will really enjoy Jeff's take on them and the way he ties up some of the dangling plot lines that the abrupt discontinuing of the hero line left unresolved.
I especially enjoyed the battle scenes which were well choreographed, full of action and filled with insights into the various characters. I found it to be a very entertaining read with a well developed plot and s few interesting twists toward the end.
If you are a fan of the classic superhero whether in comics or in prose, you will really enjoy this book!

This is a very well written novel that encompasses several genres: New Pulp, mystery, supernatural thriller, paranormal investigations, Jazz music, the Harlem Renaissance, Lovecraftian Themes, and so much more! This is one of the best novels I have read this year. Jon Black is a professional journalist (with an emphasis on music) and a commercial writer who also does fiction in the mystery/horror genre. I was engrossed with this story from the very beginning and marveled at the amount of research and storycraft that went into it. This is a story that will not disappoint the reader. Highly recommended!

Author Jeff Deischer adds another Comic hero universe to his repertoire with a pastiche of the Mystery Men (and Women) from the 1960s Charlton Comics. He gathers together some of the well know (and lesser known) heroes from this universe and has them band together to solve a mystery that threatens the entire world. The action occurs in 1967 shortly after Charlton shut down its venture into super powered heroes. This is the first in a series of such novels that brings together the loose ends left when Charlton abruptly ended its Mystery People experiment.
I remember these characters like it was yesterday and it was very satisfying that someone was taking them seriously again after a 50+ year hiatus.

With a career spanning seven decades, Robert Fujitani was one of the busiest illustrators in American Comics. He contributed to the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Ages of comic history and did work for such memorable titles as Hangman, the Flying Dutchman, Prince Valiant, Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, Rip Kirby, Doctor Solar: Man of the Atom, and Turok: Sone of Stone. Pulp legend Will Murray has written a new novel that crosses over 3 of the most popular Pulp Heroes of the 1930s: The Spider, Jimmy Christopher (Operator 5), and G-8. Will has taken these characters and fleshed them out into more realistic and complex protagonists. Meanwhile, the prose is smooth and action is non-stop. This is a real "Wild Adventure" story when a mysterious meteorite lands on Central Park and starts changing people into cosmic zombies. To complicate matters, 2 supervillains from The Spider and G-8 show up to exploit the new threat.

Author Jeff Deischer one of the few men to personally write a chronology of the entire Doc Savage corpus gives us a Doc Savage pastiche set in 1999 bringing the story up into modern times. And it works! This is a story with plenty of action, Easter Eggs for the diehard fan, and an understanding of the character and his legacy that only a master pulp writer and Pulp chronicler could give us! This is a terrific story that I think every true Pulp Hero fan will enjoy. What's more Jeff has done something very difficult: his Doc Brazen bridges the gap between the Pulp Style of the 1930s and 1940s and the modern world.
I consider this to be Jeff's finest novel to date. This is the kind of story the fans of Old Pulp and New Pulp are looking for.

August 28, 2017 is the 100th birthday of the legendary comic author and artist Jack Kirby. Jack had a long career in comics from the 1940s onwards. During that tie he created and collaborated on several of the most memorable comic book characters including superheroes and supervillains including: Captain America, Blue Bolt, the Boy Explorers, The Fighting American, The Fantastic Four, Darkseid, and many others. Writer and scholar Jeff Deischer has written a novel incorporating several of Kirby's characters in the public domain to a crossover story taking place in the early 1960s which respects the original character lines and carries them forward. This is a tribute to Jack Kirby and his genius carrying forward his legacy.
This is a volume that comic fans and anyone who enjoys superheroes cannot afford to miss! The legendary Ron Fortier is joined by Erik Franklin to discuss the Kickstarter project for the Brother Bones Movie. Ron discusses the origin of the character and then describes how he and his colleague Daniel Husser envisioned a film based o the character. They mead a brief demo film which they presented to Ron and the rest is history. We discussed the details of the project and I was impressed with care and reverence for the original material that Erik and David have shown. The Script is written. The cast has already been chosen. The Kickstarter program is the last step before gong into production. If they make their goal, we could see this film for summer in 2018. Will you help?

We discussed history, the phenomenon of the play "Hamilton", Chernow's biographies of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, Diana's other novels and a WHOLE BUNCH on UFOs. This was such an interesting discussion that I have decided to just put it out there for the fan's to enjoy. This is a departure from our tried and true format but I think the fans won't mind.
Meanwhile, Diana and I are planning to do a show looking at some recent (and not so recent) books on Ufology. We are both buffs and have read widely on this topic. We will decide on which books to discuss and set a date for the near future.

Frank Schildiner - prolific author, martial artist, and Wold Newton Enthusiast- has written a second novel in his series about the Gouroull version of Frankenstein. This is based on the character in novels of Jean Claude Carriere. This Frankenstein is not a sympathetic character tinged with pathos. He is a rampaging monster with no redeeming qualities who is struggling to fulfill for himself a broken promise of his creator, Victor Frankenstein to create him a mate.
In this second novel, "The Triumph of Frankenstein" Gouroull discovers a relative of his creator, Elizabeth Frankenstein who is trying to duplicate her famous cousins blasphemous work of reanimation. He decides to share the secrets of his own body with her if she will assist him in his quest for a mate. Because of his penchant for mayhem, Gouroull has several stark battles along the way as he and Elizabeth try to outmaneuver each other. This is a tightly constructed story with elements of adventure, violence, and horror.

Ric Croxton, along with Tom and Ginger Johnson discuss a new open group on Facebook "Men's Adventure Paperback Books from the 70's and 80's." This group not only discusses the Men's Adventure books that were such a big hit in the 1960s through the 1990s. They also swap boxes of books from that period. For all of us who were there and those of us who were too young to remember, it is a chance to relive the genre of literature that preceded and set the stage for the New Pulp movement. Author, Film maker, RPG Creator, and Musical Composer/Arranger David W. Edwards has his first interview with me on his new book "Nightscape Double Feature, Volume One." This book contains 2 novels write in the Pulp Horror style. "The Thousand Eyed Fear" is set in World War I where a team of young elite fighters from the Allied nations is sent to find and destroy a new German factory which it is believed is manufacturing a new and deadly Tank. The leader of this group (known collectively as The Lost Boys) is a young man who has been trained from childhood to be a world class adventurer and righter of wrongs. When he and his team discover the factory, they find out that what is being built there is far WORSE and a new tank! This story is a collaboration between Derrick Ferguson and Dave Edwards.
The second story is "The Q for Damnation". It is written by Arlen M. Todd (which is one of David's Nom de plumes.) We are introduced to Monteau, the masked female detective who uses Surrealistic techniques to solve crimes. In this story she must battle the Nazis for control of a work of art tat has the potential to enslave every mind on Earth!
Both of these stories are beautifully done with literary style and pulp sensibilities. They flow well and very entertaining while touching on some serious philosophical questions in an accessible way.
Dave and I discuss not only this book but previous books he has published along with the film "Nightscape" and his progressive rock album "To Sin Against Our Mercies" (by Project Nightscape) which will tie into an up-coming novel in the Nightscape series.
I think that the fans will LOVE these books and I encourage all of you to give them a try.
