It's the finale episode of Season 4! It's going to be a bare bones episode again with no intro and no outro. My voice recovered from strep, only to lose it again by teaching a clinic to forty-five Kindergarteners through 3rd graders. I'm sure you all can relate. It's a good thing that our guest on the podcast today holds enough sparkle that she doesn't need a flowery intro and outro! I'm so excited to be chatting with Sarah Flisowski of Blinn College! The Blinn College dance team has won numerous American Dance and Drill Team collegiate championships, has won eight national titles at the National Dance Alliance (NDA) College Nationals and six national tiles at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College Nationals. In 2019, Blinn’s dance team made history by claiming national titles in Dance Team Performance Open and Pom Division II. Barland Flisowski is a former member of the Blinn dance team and a graduate of Southwest Texas State University – now Texas State University – in San Marcos, Texas, with a degree in exercise sports science and minor in political science. She was also a member of the dance company Orchesis. She also earned her master’s in physical education and health from Prairie View A&M University. Barland Flisowski started her teaching career at Mesquite ISD, where she taught for two years at Berry Middle school. She went on to Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD to become the director of the award-winning RL Turner Lionettes and dance department head. She was the director of the Lionettes for seven years before returning to Blinn as the head coach of the Blinn College dance and cheer teams. Barland Flisowski also is a 20-year staff member with American Dance and Drill Team School, where she has been the Novelty Staff Captain and Social Officer Coordinator. Sarah has traveled to Florida as a member of ESP Productions, the halftime production company of the Citrus Bowl for over 10 years. She has been a speaker at Drill Team Directors of America and assisted with speaking at Texas Dance Educators Association. Sarah is a member of NDCA, National Dance Coaches Association where she is a Executive Board member, College Division Representative and on the Small College Committee. She has done choreography for high schools all around Texas and beyond and loves working with all dancers and helping them find their place in college dance. Ashley Deaton graduated fro LSU where she was a member of their national championship winning team. She then danced for the New Orleans Pelicans (formerly the Hornets) and became their choreographer and director. She led that team during Hurricane Katrina, relocating to Oklahoma City. She then went on to add Senior Director of Entertainment Teams for the New Orleans Saints to her resumé. As their leader, she made it her own mission to develop poised, healthy and well-rounded individuals off stage, so they could use their experience to achieve success in their personal and professional lives as well. Like so many of us, Ashley utilized the pandemic to get back in touch with what was really important to her. She wanted to take her coaching skills to a more meaningful place as a Mindset and Wellness Coach. She calls her company Soul Werk. She offers transformational individual and group coaching and also dance classes! I absolutely loved talking to her and got so many ideas from her insight and advice! Loyal listeners will notice that this is a bare bones episode with no intro and no outro. That's due to the fact that I have a killer case of strep throat and have no voice. I hope to be back to talking in time for next week's episode! This blog post has been shared by many members of the dance team community: https://callmemags.substack.com/p/all-my-blood-sweat-and-tears-for It was written by Maggie Schmaltz, a recent graduate of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and a member of their phenomenal dance team while she was a student there. The blog post is about what Maggie experienced as a member of her college dance team that was nationally ranked and known, repeat champions many times over, but that acknowledgement and respect did not transfer to her own college campus and community. It's actually a very common tale. I've talked to countless coaches through this podcast and also through professional development conferences and it's apparent that the spirit programs at other colleges and universities, and high schools across the country, are not given equal access to amenities and resources as the other programs. With the help of this week's podcast guest, my athletic director at Rockhurst University, Kristy Bayer, we are building a program that is more closely aligned with what the other sports at our university experience. I ask Kristy what other coaches can do to advocate for their programs, whether or not they are under the athletics umbrella at their institutions. I also ask her about being a woman who has experienced much success in the male dominated world of sports. Kristy was a coach herself with a winning record, so I also get answers to coaching questions because her ideas and how she ran her teams can all be applied to spirit teams at all levels. It's been a while! Thank you for your patience as I stepped away from the podcast for a few months. Why did I have to step away? Well, I've been coaching my former college team! Join me and Nick Clement as we get caught up and talk about what's been going on in our lives and in the dance team world. Carlee Bachek is not only the coach of the University of Indianapolis Dance Team, she was also a member, a leader, and the catalyst to get the team recognized as a club sport instead of a student led organization. You'll hear her insights on leading the team, building the program, team culture, choreography, technique, and all kinds of other coaching advice. Denise Heilers is the long time coach of the Forest Park Dance Team. They hold 23 state titles total in pom, kick, and hip hop. They are also climbing the ranks on the national stage as well. With this talent and quality of performances, one would assume that they come from a really large school with tons of resources and a big pool of dancers from which to choose their team. Nothing can be further from the truth. Forest Park is considered a small school, even when it's combined with its junior high, but that's one of the attributes that Denise has turned into an asset for her and her team. Jamie's song The World Goes On was released at the height of Covid, and it inspired us to create beautiful movement, and to reach out and make connections with other dancers since that was a void in all of our lives due to measures taken to combat the Coronavirus. This talented Grammy nominated artist not only gave us her permission and blessing to utilize her song in this way, but she also talks to us about it and other topics on this podcast episode! Jamie O'Neal's career has been prolific as a vocalist, songwriter and producer, so I picked her brain about creativity, inspiration, and maintaining a career in the arts. She's also no stranger to the dance world, and has tremendous respect for what we do as well! See the collaborative video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viEb7avzmhw Both Larkspur and Jamie O'Neal are extending a warm and heartfelt invitation to all dancers everywhere to be a part of this collaboration! Kayla and I talk about how you can do just that in the outro of this episode! More information can be found at https://www.larkspurdance.com and https://www.larkspurdance.com/larkwp/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/TWGOWeb.pdf Jamie O'Neals links: Website https://www.jamieoneal.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jamieonealofficial/ YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWN4DPj7sMnGfdbhbAI4W2g Shoutout to our sponsors! Glam'r Gear: You all have heard Kayla and I go on and on about these bags! They have some really great gear that has been designed especially with the needs of dancers in mind. My team and I utilized our backpacks all summer long while teaching clinics and working on this project. There are so many pockets in all shapes and sizes, which comes in handy for sure! Glam'r Gear is offering a 5% discount on most items if you use the code LARK05! Check them out at glamrgear.com Apolla Performance: They outfitted us with some great footwear and my team absolutely loved them and use them to teach at their studios all the time. I wore a pair inside my sneakers at every clinic I taught this summer and it really helped! I belong to a choreography and dance teacher network and a teacher nearing the age of 50 was asking for help because she can't wear the tap and jazz shoes anymore that she used to be able to wear. I was going to recommend Apolla, but about 10 other members beat me to it! Apolla is offering a 5% discount until August 31st with the code LARKSPUR5. Check them out at apollaperformance.com

Mishra Keller has been a competitive cheerleader, dancer, choreographer, instructor and judge so her perspective comes from years of experience. Her perspective is also unique because she through her company Nutrisults, she offers a holistic approach that beautifully translates into dance teams, individual dancers, choreographers, and coaches. We talk about choreography, improving routines and maximizing a team's potential in common scoresheet captions. Her answers are different and I think come at the perfect time as seasons are either gearing up for competition, or wrapping up after competition. We also talk about doing what is best for all areas of your life through nutrition and fitness, and correcting previous damage that may have been done both physically, emotionally and mentally. Mishra has a wealth of knowledge to share when it comes to body image and what she has to say will help our dance team community continue on a more inclusive approach and will help those of us who have struggled with this in the past to heal. I'm so pleased to have Dr. Adrian Singletary on the podcast! He's been an athlete, a coach, an athletic director, and an administrator, but my favorite role of his is that of our Natalie's husband. We spend a little time talking about what those of us in dance team want to know: motivating our dancers, coaching methods that work, and getting support from athletic directors and administrators. Then we shift our focus and talk about his reactions to the civil and social unrest of late, both over the summer and in our nation's capital in January. We also talk about what those of us that want change need to do moving forward. Then I'm joined by Iris Lynne Sherman, who kicked off our FLOURISH series and selected our first Larkspur Book Club pick: Stamped From The Beginning by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi. Iris and I chatted about the book and the main takeaways we both got from it. Shoutout to the sponsor of this episode: Glam’r Gear! Coree Smith has extensive dance team experience as a performer, choreographer, instructor, and judge. Although she is an expert in this field, she is still a very enthusiastic, lifelong learner when it comes to dance team, and her positivity is contagious. Her routines have won more than 65 state championships in Iowa alone over the last 25 years and multiple national champions and finalists at the high school and college levels. She is now serving as head adjudicator for Dance Team Union. I picked Coree's brain about choreo of course, how to build a routine, how to improve routines, getting inspired, and she also gives numerous tips on upping scores in synchronization, execution and showmanship. Listen with a notebook because you're going to get inspired and informed by Coree's knowledge and energy! I'm joined by the wonderful Nick Clement as guest cohost as we're continuing to celebrate this milestone birthday. We talked about surprises that this podcast has brought and some choreo successes and failures. Then I spilled the tea or brought the juice or whatever the cool cats are saying these days, by sharing some details and stories about celebrity encounters, dancing for recording artists, being on movie sets, and some wild Whiskey Girl adventures. Then we got back to the real world in the here and now, and talked about Mr. Larkspur Dance, how we've made that work for over 27 years, and the episode is wrapped up with the final 5 of the top 10 life lessons I've learned. It's been a great birthday week, and I've enjoyed celebrating! Here's to the next 50 years! Shoutout to the sponsor of this episode: Glam’r Gear! On today's episode of the podcast, my dear friend, talented choreographer, king of kick, and guest cohost extraordinaire Nick Clement asked me the questions and I gave the answers! It's a very forward looking episode, as I spent a great deal of time talking about where I see Larkspur in 10 years and things I'd like to build upon and accomplish. But because we are who we are, the conversation meandered to include a recap of the Missouri Dance Team Association's State Championship that happened virtually this past weekend, Las Vegas shows, Harry Potter, Real Housewives, The View, botox injections, aging, middle aged white woman hip hop, diversity and inclusion, tap dancing, and how chatting with the back row during choreo sessions is THE BEST! The episode concludes with the sharing of 5 of my top 10 life lessons I've learned over the past 50 years. It's a wandering but epic saga of an episode, and I can't wait to do Pt. 2 next week! Many thanks to all the people in my dance life for being with me on this journey! Here's to many more fabulous years to come! Sara Heptig coached the Olathe North Eaglettes for years, leading them to national championships for two different brands. She is now coaching the Kansas State University Classy Cats, a role she cherishes because she too was a Classy Cat during her time at K-State! We talk about her journey to secure that coaching position, which wasn't an easy process, and I love the life lessons she shares from that experience. I also picked her brain about coaching a high school team vs. a college team, her sweetest victories, building team culture, and how to keep morale up during the pandemic. She shares so much great info! Sara is one of the best coaches I know, and also one of the best people I know, and we're all so fortunate to have her in the dance team world! One of the most listened to episodes of the podcast was at the end of Season 2. It was during a very uncertain time of the pandemic, and I just picked up a microphone and started talking. This episode is done in that same spirit. I'm joined by Larkspur members Kayla and Natalie (our precious Cassie couldn't make it due to being exposed to Covid, and we missed her terribly.) We talked about how the pandemic has affected each of us and different ways we've coped with it. Then the conversation turned to dance and we discussed our favorite styles, our pet peeves, benefits we've gained, meaningful things our teachers and coaches have taught us, our coolest dance experiences, and some advice and lessons we've learned along the way. And then we engaged in some real talk that all good friends engage in when they want to have meaningful conversations. We each gave a TED Talk, shared ways to decompress, recommended TV shows, books, and movies, talked about journaling, life hacks, and our heroes. And then it got off the rails a little bit...took an interesting turn...and we felt the need to discuss the really important things like Britney Spears, Weird Al, Condoleezza Rice, nail polish, Snape, Mother Teresa, and gangster rap. Consider this a personal invitation to snag a seat at this fun cocktail party around a firepit. All are welcome at the Larkspur table. In an effort to keep this topic at the forefront, our second episode in our FLOURISH with Larkspur series of the podcast discusses the sensitive topic of race again. This time I sit down and chat with Yvonne Cole, the longtime coach of the Lindbergh Flyerettes and Missouri Dance Team Association founder and board member, who gave us all kinds of dance team wisdom during a Season 1 episode. This time we engage in some very real and honest talk about the social, racial and civil unrest that has been brought to the forefront by recent events in our country, and she gives her viewpoint as a person of color. We're both hoping that this will open up all kinds of dialogue and will inspire other people to have more conversations like this. In light of this desire to keep this conversation going, we've started a book club! Please join us in reading Stamped From The Beginning by Ibram X. We're very excited about new FLOURISH themed episodes for this season's podcast that will involve other important aspects of our lives besides dance. In our first FLOURISH episode, I welcome back my dear friend Iris Lynne Sherman, who gave us all some great advice from her long and varied career as a performer during a Season 1 episode. This time we engage in some very real and honest talk about the social, racial and civil unrest that has been brought to the forefront by recent events in our country, and she gives her viewpoint as a person of color. We're both hoping that this will open up all kinds of dialogue and will inspire other people to have more conversations like this. In light of the desire to keep this conversation going, we've started a book club! Please join us in reading Stamped From The Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi, recommended by Iris to help us all become more educated and mindful when it comes to issues dealing with race in our country. We will have Iris back on in a couple of months to discuss the book, and would love to hear your input!
