Fans, frustrated by the lack of new figures released in that line, start "storytelling" to come up with reasons why the number of new Star Wars figures in the classic scale is so small while the 6-inch Black Series line gets so many.

The good included the most detailed Star Wars vehicle/playset ever in the form of Jabba's Sail Barge. Plus the Black Series 6-inch line continued strong with great offerings from Clone Wars Armor Obi-Wan Kenobi to The Mandalorian, plus several Rise of Skywalker figures.
Mixed in with that was some bad: The limited-articulation 3.75" line that had been a mainstay for years was cancelled. The Vintage Collection filled that niche, but lacked in new figures and in-store availability. The new 5-inch Galaxy of Adventures line didn't click with many collectors.
Then in the ugly was the limited availability of Retro Collection figures at Target--especially the multi-colored Darth Vader. And what, no Baby Yoda toys?
In this new Star Wars Action News podcast the team comes together to reflect on what the last year brought--and what they hope the new year can deliver!

Last Friday the Rogue One toys were released! Well, officially any way...they had been showing up on store shelves worldwide for weeks before the official street date. But, like for The Force Awakens, these Rogue One toys were celebrated with a midnight release at Toys R Us and Walmart stores. Plus exclusive figures at Target, Walmart, K-Mart, Toys R Us, and more.

Highly detailed, highly articulated Star Wars 3.75-inch figures are the mainstay of many fans' collections. The news that The Force Awakens would only see a handful of these Black Series figures, and that they would be Walmart exclusives, made fans worry if these new toys would be obtainable. The third wave, with versions of Han Solo, General Leia, and Captain Phasma from The Force Awakens, has been elusive and fetched north of $40 per figure on eBay. Few first time Star Wars novelists get the promotional push that Joe Schreiber received in 2009 for Deathtroopers. The first unabashed horror story set in the Star Wars universe the combination of zombies and the galaxy far, far away inspired cosplay even before the book hit shelves. While somewhat controversial for its more R rated gore and violence, the book became a fan favorite and just one year later the sequel Red Harvest was released.
Now after a four year absence from Star Wars fiction Schreiber is back in bookstores with the new novel Darth Maul: Lockdown. This prequel era tale follows the Sith apprentice on a mission for his master before the events of The Phantom Menace. Lockdown is a departure from the author's previous horror stories but the hard action and flare for visuals remain--as does the promotion. From the graphics flaunting Darth Maul fighting a Yuuzhan Vong to the news that this new story ties in closely with James Luceno's 2012 book Darth Plagueis fan expectations couldn't be higher.

For Star Wars toy collectors 2012 has been exciting and frustrating in equal measure. Some of the best figures in the history of Star Wars were released, but most collectors had trouble finding them. At Five Below stores across the country an unusual figure is showing up. It was first reported at Jedi Temple Archives.com and has been spotted by many collectors, including Arnie and Marjorie of Star Wars Action News. It's a variant of the 212th Battalion Clone Trooper with a more detailed, more white helmet. But the odd thing is, the figure has seemingly been opened, then taped back shut. For years many fans' holy grail for the Star Wars 3.75-inch collection has been an original trilogy vehicle never realized in either vintage or modern era--Jabba's Sail Barge. The scale and scope of such a vehicle has made it seemingly prohibitive, but at this year's New York Comic-Con the Star Wars brand team mentioned that they could possibly do it. This has caused Star Wars fan sites, including Star Wars Action News, to unite like never before with the Bring on the Barge fan site petition. With the lofty goal of 10,000 signatures by Jan 31st this petition is to show Hasbro that there is a huge base of support in the community for a barge. Last Saturday was the first annual Star Wars Reads Day, an event promoted by Del Rey and Lucasfilm to promote literacy in general, and the reading of Star Wars books in particular. Over 1,000 libraries and book stores across the country took part, with kits provided by Del Rey giving kids activities and crafts, and promoting Star Wars. Maybe not since Heir to the Empire has a Star Wars Expanded Universe been as hotly anticipated as James Luceno's Darth Plagueis. Since Revenge of the Sith hit theaters Star Wars ans have wondered how much of Palpatine's tale of his former master was true. Could Plagueis stop people from dying? Did he pass on the knowledge to Palpatine? And, most importantly, did Plagueis cause the creation of Anakin Skywalker? But after appearing on Del Rey's Star Wars book list for release in 2008 the book was pulled by Lucasfilm. Now, four years after it's originally scheduled release, James Luceno and Lucasfilm have given us Darth Plagueis and answered those many questions...from a certain point of view. This past weekend a light went out in the universe as Ralph McQuarrie passed away at the age of 82. The concept artist of the original trilogy, the artist took Lucas' words and created visions of a galaxy far, far away that would inspire generations of artists to come.
