This is such an important conversation because almost every family will face it at some point and knowing what to expect can make all the difference. Segment 1 – The Emotional Move Guy: Julie, many people think the hardest part is packing boxes, but I imagine it's much deeper than that. Julie: Absolutely. The move isn't really about the furniture or the house—it's about the memories. Many seniors have lived in their home for 30, 40, even 50 years. They've raised children there, celebrated birthdays, welcomed grandchildren, and built a lifetime of memories. Leaving that home can feel like leaving a part of themselves. The first thing I tell family is to acknowledge those emotions. It's okay to be excited about the future while also grieving what you're leaving behind. Those feelings can exist together. Guy: What advice do you give to adult children who are trying to help? Julie: Listen more than you talk. Instead of saying, "It's time to move," ask questions like: "What are you most worried about? ""What would make this transition easier?" When seniors feel heard and included in the decision, they're much more comfortable embracing the next chapter.2 Segment 2 – Guilt and Relief Guy: Let's talk about something many caregivers don't admit—they feel guilty. Julie: They absolutely do. Adult children often tell me, "I promised I'd never put Mom in a community," or "I feel like I'm giving up." But here's the truth... Senior living isn't giving up. It's giving your loved one more opportunity, more social interaction, more support, and often a much safer environment. Families also experience something they don't expect—relief. Not because they love their parent less, but because they no longer must carry the responsibility alone. Instead of spending every visit worrying about medications, meals, or whether Mom is safe, they can simply enjoy being family again. Guy: That must change the relationship. Julie: It really does. The conversations become about grandchildren, vacations, favorite memories, and enjoying time together instead of managing daily tasks. I often tell families that moving into senior living doesn't end caregiving—it changes it. You become a daughter or son again instead of a full-time caregiver. Segment 3 – The First 30 Days Guy: One question people ask all the time is, "What happens after Mom moves in?" Walk us through those first few weeks. Julie: The first 30 days are all about adjustment. The first week can be emotional. Everything is new—the apartment, the dining room, new faces, and a new routine. That's perfectly normal. During those first weeks, our staff spends extra time getting to know each resident. We learn about their favorite hobbies, what time they like to wake up, favorite meals, music they enjoy, and even what sports teams they follow. Those little details help someone begin feeling at home. Around the second or third week, many residents start making friends and participating in activities. By the end of the first month, families often tell us something remarkable... "My mom is smiling again." Or... "I haven't seen Dad relaxed in years." That transformation is incredibly rewarding. Segment 4 – Helping the Transition Guy: What can families do to make those first few weeks successful? Julie: A few simple things make a tremendous difference. Bring familiar items from home—favorite photos, a cherished chair, quilts, or treasured keepsakes. Encourage your loved one to participate in activities, even if it's just attending for a few minutes. And perhaps most importantly... Give them time. Every adjustment is different. Some residents settle in after a few days, while others may need several weeks. Patience and encouragement go a long way. The Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers (SAV) continue to make a remarkable impact across Green Valley and Southern Arizona, and in this week's episode of In the Know, Commander Deanna Lindeman shares just how much these dedicated volunteers accomplish behind the scenes. Let's start by having you tell our listeners a little bit about yourself. Dick:
I was born in 1935 in Bisbee, AZ. Raised in the Ft. Huachuca Mountains. Then went to work in the Mines for 45 years and retired to Amado AZ in 2000. Before moving to Vista Pointe, I lived independently in my home for 26 years. As time went on, I realized I was older and needed less responsibility and more opportunities to socialize and enjoy life Julie:
What initially prompted you to explore senior living? Dick Two years ago, I found that maintaining my home was becoming more work than I wanted. I was spending a lot of time on chores and less time doing things I enjoyed. My wife and I began looking at options that would provide support while allowing me to remain active and independent. Which started me thinking about assisted living communities. CHOOSING VISTA POINTE Guy:
There are many choices available. What stood out about Vista Pointe at Green Valley? Dick:
I first looked at 5 different communities and chose Vista Pointe. From my first visit, the atmosphere felt welcoming. The staff genuinely cared about residents, and everyone I met seemed happy and engaged. It felt more like a family neighborhood than a facility. Julie:
Many families are concerned about making a major life transition. How was your move-in experience? Dick:
Honestly, I was nervous. Change can be difficult. Julie and the staff made the transition much easier than I expected. They helped me get settled, introduced me to other residents, and made me feel at home very quickly. SERVICES AND SUPPORT Julie:
You currently receive services at Vista Pointe. Can you tell us about the support you receive and how it has impacted your daily life? Dick:
Yes, having assistance available when I need it has given me tremendous peace of mind. The caregivers are kind, respectful, and attentive. They help me with the things that have become more challenging while encouraging me to remain as independent as possible. Julie:
That's something we strive for every day—providing support while honoring each resident's independence and dignity. How has having those services available changed your quality of life? Dick:
It's helped me to focus on daily needs living rather than worrying. I don't have to stress what might happen if I need help. I know support is available, and that security has been wonderful for both me and my family. COMMUNITY LIFE Guy:
What are some of your favorite activities or aspects of community life? Dick:
I enjoy the social events, exercise classes, and spending time with friends I've made here. There's always something happening, (Happy Hour, Bingo, Board Games and Poker which I had a Royal Flush recently! Julie:
That's one thing people often don't realize—many residents become more socially active after moving into a senior living community. Dick:
Right on, we stay very busy I have a much fuller social life now than I did living alone. FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Julie:
How has your family responded to your move? Dick:
They've been very supportive. In fact, they're relieved knowing I have support available and that I'm surrounded by people who care about me. Our visits are more enjoyable now because they're spending time with me rather than worrying about my well-being. Julie:

I wish I had done it sooner! Don't wait until you're forced to decide during a crisis. Explore your options early. Visit communities, ask questions, and talk with residents. I wish I had done it sooner because it's been a very positive change in my life. Julie:

Today we’re talking about a topic that affects so many families in our community — caregiver support and how families can find the right help when caring for a loved one becomes overwhelming. Whether you’re caring for an aging parent, a spouse recovering from surgery, or a loved one living with dementia or chronic illness, caregiving can be rewarding — but it can also be emotionally and physically exhausting. Thank you for having me. I’m honored to be here because caregiver support is something that touches nearly every family at some point in life.
Segment 1 – Why Caregiver Support Matters Guy:
Let’s start with the big picture. Why is caregiver support such an important conversation right now?
Julie:
Caregivers are truly the backbone of our healthcare system and our families. Many people step into the role unexpectedly — helping a parent, spouse, sibling, or friend — often while balancing jobs, children, and their own health. What we see is that caregivers frequently put their own needs last. Over time, that can lead to stress, burnout, exhaustion, isolation, and even health problems. The important thing for people to know is this: asking for help is not a sign of failure. It’s actually one of the healthiest and most responsible things a caregiver can do.
Segment 2 – Signs It May Be Time for Help Guy:
What are some signs that a caregiver or family may need additional support?
Julie:
There are several common signs families should watch for. Sometimes the caregiver is feeling constantly overwhelmed, exhausted, anxious, or emotionally drained. They may stop taking care of themselves, miss appointments, or feel like they never get a break. Other times, families notice changes in the loved one receiving care — maybe they’re missing medications, struggling with meals, hygiene, mobility, or becoming unsafe at home. We also remind families to pay attention when caregiving starts affecting relationships, sleep, work performance, or overall quality of life. Support doesn’t always mean full-time care. Sometimes just a few hours of help each week can make a tremendous difference.
Segment 3 – Types of Support Available Guy:
Many people don’t even know what types of help are available. What kinds of support can families look into?
Julie:
That’s a great question because there are more resources available than many people realize. Support can include:
* In-home caregiving assistance
* Companion care and social support
* Transportation to appointments
* Meal preparation
* Medication reminders
* Respite care for family caregivers
* Dementia or Alzheimer’s support
* Community programs and senior resources
* Support groups and caregiver education
* Senior Living Community
Every family situation is different, so the key is finding support that fits the individual’s needs, preferences, and budget.
Segment 4 – Choosing the Right Home Care Agency or Community Resource Guy:
What should families look for when choosing a home care agency or community support resource?
Julie:
Families should feel comfortable asking questions and taking time to find the right fit. Some important things to consider include:
* Is the agency licensed, insured, and experienced?
* Are caregivers trained and carefully screened?
* Does the organization communicate well with families?
* Is care personalized to the client’s needs?
* Are schedules flexible?
* Does the agency focus on dignity, compassion, and relationship-building?
I also encourage families to trust their instincts. The right support provider should make families feel heard, respected, and supported — not pressured. Community organizations can also be incredibly valuable because they often connect families with transportation, meal services, wellness programs, support groups, and other local resources.
Segment 5 – Addressing Common Concerns Guy:
Some families hesitate to ask for help because they feel guilty or worry their loved one won’t accept care. What would you say to them?
Julie:
That’s very common, and those feelings are understandable. Many caregivers feel they should be able to do everything themselves, but no one is meant to carry that responsibility alone. Receiving help can actually improve relationships because caregivers are less stressed and able to spend more meaningful time with their loved ones instead of feeling overwhelmed by constant responsibilities. And for seniors or individuals receiving care, having support often helps them stay independent and safely remain in their homes longer. Starting small can help. Sometimes introducing care for just a few hours a week makes the transition easier for everyone.

They sell everything they love. There are three distinctive departments—the plant nursery, art and home décor and fashion and accessories. The event features a BBQ buffet, line dancing, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and live music from Hardscrabble Road, with tickets available now at Nancy Pants, the GV/Sahuarita Chamber, Posada Java, and VAS offices.

Andy Taylor speaks with Dareck Makowski, owner of Golf Cars of Arizona, celebrating the company’s 45th anniversary. Deanna shared details about a Monsoon Safety Event happening this Thursday at CPAC, featuring presentations from organizations like Tucson Electric Power. She encouraged the community to attend for important tips on staying safe during monsoon season.
Lt. Bernstein highlighted the “Badges and Backpacks” event on July 31st at the Tucson Convention Center (4:30–7:30 PM). The department will distribute 3,000 backpacks filled with school supplies, offer medical and dental checks, vaccinations, and award over $10,000 in classroom supplies to the school bringing the most students.

2. UniSource/TEP Power Line Project* A public input session is scheduled for the next day 05/20/2025 (9 AM at Las Campanas Social Center) to review UniSource/TEP’s proposed routes for a new power line. * The project aims to improve power redundancy for Santa Cruz County and is part of long-term energy infrastructure planning. * Concerns include visual impact, environmental considerations, and property proximity.
3. Monsoon Preparedness – “Monsoon Madness” (June 5)* Debbie previewed the annual Monsoon Preparedness Forum, covering flood risks, emergency alerts, and safety planning. * Agencies participating include NOAA, Pima County Emergency Management, Santa Rita Fire District, Regional Flood Control, Trico, TEP, SAV, Northwest Hospital, and more. * The event will feature live presentations and an emergency preparedness expo, including information on go-bags, pet safety, and how to prepare for extended power outages.
4. Pima Council on Aging (PCOA) Office Hours* Starting June 4, PCOA will hold regular hours at the Green Valley Council offices (1st–4th Wednesdays, 9:30 AM–12:30 PM), offering resources and support to help older residents age in place with dignity.
5. Summer Planning and Community Engagement* Most committees will pause for the summer, except the executive team. * Community members are encouraged to suggest topics or forums they'd like to see addressed in the upcoming season (Sept 2025–May 2026). * Final board meeting before summer break is scheduled for Thursday.

This Week's "In the Know" We have the privilege of speaking with Executive Director Chris Erickson from Valley Assistance Services (VAS). It's an exciting time at VAS, as the summer months have not slowed down their services and mission. Chris highlights that summer often brings health emergencies and concerns, with many individuals facing difficulties paying their utility bills. VAS is ready to help.
A new educational program is being launched in partnership with United Community Health Center. These courses will provide valuable information on dehydration, healthy nutrition, and safety related to fire, water, skin, sun, and heat. Through this partnership, United Community Health Center will also offer immunizations and educate participants on the necessary requirements and timing. This initiative would not be possible without the support of the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation.
Chris also shares some of the volunteer opportunities available at VAS, including answering phones, assisting with Excel spreadsheets, and making friendly phone calls. Volunteer drivers play a crucial role in helping clients get to and from medical appointments and grocery shopping. Additionally, VAS has introduced a new lunch program in collaboration with Valley Galley, which takes place on the second Friday of each month.
