In this episode, we dive into the difference between self-development and holiness within the Catholic tradition. While self-development focuses on personal achievements and self-fulfilment, we discuss why this alone is not enough to truly satisfy someone's life. Instead, we explore the path of holiness - an invitation to grow in our unique personalities while striving to become more like Jesus.
Throughout the conversation, we address the potential pitfalls of self-development when pursued in isolation, such as envy or comparison, and highlight the transformative power of holiness in cultivating inner peace and purpose. We emphasise that holiness doesn't mean losing our individuality but enhancing it through a deeper relationship with Christ.
By the end of this episode, we hope you'll understand that the goal is not perfectionism but a genuine commitment to living according to Christ's teachings and that true success is found not in worldly achievements but in the ongoing spiritual journey of becoming the person God calls us to be.

Do you ever listen to conversion stories and wish you could experience a similar transformation? Is our approach to belief too reductionist, where the Gospel is a biography and the psalms akin to inspirational quotes. In this week’s podcast, we discuss how we can learn from the early Christian communities and the role of Scripture in their lives. We explore why Scripture can be:

  • Like digesting one’s food, with are 3 stages
  • A source of direction and inspiration

What does it take to live a happier life? In this episode, Dr. Marta Rocchi suggests the answer to this question addresses the very “why” of human existence. How we often confuse happiness with comfort and pleasure but in fact, it is so much more. We explore why the Ancient Greeks had it so right and why gratitude, friendships, enjoyment, and acceptance of oneself as a work in progress are all part of our personal flourishing.

Erika shares with us her experience of addiction as a teen, her intellectual search for truth and the healing power of relationships. She explains her spiritual awakening, the transformative power of prayer in her life and the kindness of strangers.

While Easter weekend has passed, the reflections and meaning of this date must remain in our Hearts and Minds. Grace is God's life within us and we want to remind you of this.

In this podcast episode, Maire and Siobhan discuss the credibility of Easter as seen in the early accounts of Easter in the Gospels and the disbelief of the early followers of Christ.

We explore the craziness of our Catholic faith whose crowning feast is man putting God to death and God's coming back to life. We discuss how that very central message requires unpacking among our peers. We explore the transformative power Easter can have on each of us and the magnificence of the Easter liturgy which we can reflect and pray about in the 50 days of the Easter celebration.

We invite you to engage in this dialogue to reflect on the transformative power of Easter in your own life. Though this episode was recorded during Lent, its message resonates far beyond the Easter weekend.

Why do we find it hard to commit. Is it because the dominant culture is one of choice and our infinite browsing skills have transmitted to life.

In today's podcast we explore why we have trouble committing to relationships, why we find it hard to commit to a career path and why we distrust organised religion, politics and any major institution. Why do we have low attention spans and low commitment spans? (If you find it hard to understand this phenomenon try browsing Netflix some evening - you will experience it - we are in this world too).

We discuss the 3 reasons why we find it hard to commit Fear of regret, Fear of association and fear of missing out, FOMO. We dig into key ideas from Pete Davis in his book “Dedicated” and we explore the idea of Master committers, that we yearn for - individuals who role play commitment in their everyday lives.

Many people think faith is naïve – childish – superstitious a pre- science space. The idea that science has replaced religion is often left unchallenged by believers.

In today's podcast we explore how science and religion ask different questions. Science is about the exploration of our reality, the world we can measure and observe. Science asks the what and when questions. Whereas religion explores the how and why questions. Nothing dependent within the universe can cause the universe. We discuss Peter Kreeft's defence of God from the stance of human desire. We explore human values we take for granted, originating in Judeo-Christian values of the dignity and equality of the person. We discuss the natural tension between reason - rationality and the reason of the heart or intuition and hope are needed in a journey of faith and both are deeply human.

Maire with Helen Hughes discuss how sometimes we are so task focused we don’t think of our purpose. We all have a unique purpose, individual to us only, we inhabit a particular part of the world at a particular time in history. We all have different personalities, identities, talents, temperaments, and cultural backgrounds.

Discovering your authentic self means devoting yourself to a lifetime of growth in self -awareness, realising your potential within the reality of your personal circumstances. What if instead of having to live your one life one day at a time, you could sample every life you could possibly have? Would you be happier? Would you find “the one?” The life in which everything fits? We don’t have a problem owning our smaller decisions, because the consequences are limited.

But bigger decisions can be harder to own, to find peace with them. Hard decisions are hard not because of our ignorance but because the best choice is not always obvious. Our values, our commitments, and our beliefs in large part are what determine the best decision in a hard decision.

In this session, we explore:

  • Misconceptions about decisions
  • The importance of self-awareness and acceptance
  • The virtue of decision-making prudence
  • The art of decision-making; the right outlook; space to reflect; owning your reality; aligning with your core values; taking advice
  • The pitfalls in decision-making; control v let go; the difference between goals and outcomes; embrace the suffering; no such thing as perfect; Facing the consequences of a decision; God doesn’t ask for success but love

Mary is Jesus' mum. Mary was with Jesus his whole life. What does that tell us about Mary's role in His life?

In this episode, we explore the reality that Jesus needed his mother throughout his life from the cradle to his death on the cross. We need Mary. But maybe we don't realise it, yet? Jesus' dying words were to give us his mother. There is something significant about that. We don't take the dying words of anyone lightly, and especially those of God.

We discuss how Mary's presence can change our life. We discuss how she can give us the same peace, security and love as she gave her Son. We explore how much as women we can relate to Mary. We reflect on her favourite prayer, the rosary, as a journey where we walk with Mary through her life and learn the lessons for our life.

When we think of Easter at this time of time of year, with spring in the air and the end of winter we can be joyful. But it is also a feast that speaks of who God is and who we are. God who has died for us and we, his children who are so loved.

In today's podcast Siobhan and Máire discuss the credibility of Easter as seen in the early accounts of Easter in the Gospels and the disbelief of the early followers of Christ.

We explore the craziness of our Catholic faith whose crowning feast is man putting God to death and God's coming back to life. We discuss how that very central message requires unpacking among our peers. We explore the transformative power Easter can have on each one of us and the magnificence of the Easter liturgy which we can reflect and pray about in the 50 days of the Easter celebration.

It happens all of the time. We try not to let it bother us. We blame ourselves for not being where or who we think we should be in life by now. We feel left behind. On this episode, our guest Gobnait O'Grady reminds us that the “University of Life is our best qualification”.

We explore the importance of lived experience as opposed to theory and expectations and where our core values act as our compass. We discuss the powerful feelings of helplessness and loss or even guilt that we experience when we don't fulfil certain expectations we had of ourselves. We explore the choices we need to make between competing needs; family, career, and personal needs. We ask the all-important question: can you have it all? We discuss the great personal fulfilment that comes from living your life with courage.

We often think we are time-poor because we can be bad at time management or disorganised at times. Our guest speaker on this podcast episode, Maria Kilcommins, speaks with us about why this may not be the case and how oftentimes, it is technology that is at the root cause of our time deficits.

We discuss the value of time and the deeply spiritual and religious sense it holds. How can we value our time better? Maria shares with us how a serious cancer diagnosis 11 years ago reminded her of the sobering fact that time is not limitless. Maria talks about how if we want to live an intentional life, we need to be aware of what is strengthening and competing with our relationships. We discuss how technology can help but can also hinder these relationships.

In addition, Maria explores the core values or cardinal virtues of the will and the heart which can ensure our time choices align with what we value most.

When we think of boundaries we may think it sounds selfish.   In this episode, we look at how boundaries are all about kindness to yourself and kindness to others. If setting boundaries hasn't worked for you in the past, maybe it is because you haven't given them a chance. We discuss how setting boundaries is not quick or easy but it is always worth it.  The advantage of boundary setting is that it helps us both in our personal and professional life. We explore how boundaries are the space of freedom –  helping us to distinguish what is our responsibility from what is not.

Advent can be a bit of a blur for most people. And yet, if you can give it a moment it can really make an impact on these last few weeks before Christmas. It is a time of opportunity - or grace as we would say in the Catholic tradition. God is coming and we cannot wait! But in the midst of the rushing, frenetic activities, how can we shift our focus?

In this podcast episode, we discuss the attitudes of the first family to do the first Advent, Mary, Joseph, and the Child. How did they stay calm and serene in the midst of so much uncertainty? Mary trusted everything would be okay even though there was no plan for the newborn. There seemed no angry outbursts on the part of Joseph even though he seemed to have failed in his first steps of fatherhood.

We explore Advent as a time to prepare to love others as they are and to accept whatever our Christmas holds because God is coming to us where we are and we can always love others because we are always loved by God.

When we think of the word or virtue of diligence we automatically think of someone who is hard-working and gets things done. But the etymology of the word suggests that it means a lot more. Diligence embraces the notion of choice and love. In this podcast episode, we explore how we can approach our work with more diligence. In other words, freely choosing what we do each day (including the hard and routine jobs) and doing them lovingly.

We discuss how this attitude or approach to one’s work can be a game changer and does not depend on whether we like our job at a given moment or on whether there are stressful relationships or aspects to our job. We discuss meaningfulness and how diligence can help us address and accept limitations, mistakes, and wrongdoing - all part of the human story. We explore the transformative effect of what doing one’s work with diligence and love has on each one of us and those we serve in our work.

Pope Francis has reminded us that our faith is a revolution. It always asks for something new, something radical. Do we inspire others in the way we practise and show up in our religious faith?  So often we feel we are not up to the task.

In this podcast episode, we explore the freedom of God’s children which doesn’t entitle us to a roadmap, or a detailed calendar of coming events. Instead, we discuss how our freedom gives us full access to the Lord who shows us how. We discuss that being someone who inspires others is not a question of training, nor of possessing exceptional qualities; it is simply a matter of welcoming Christ into our lives first and then being open like Christ to others.

God doesn’t simply help us to take things as they are, and leave them at that. We discuss the simple fact that we are not better than others, but rather that we have and continue to experience God’s mercy which is what we can share with others.

Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality.  Making and keeping commitments are foundational for our everyday lives, careers, and businesses.

In today's podcast we discuss how making a commitment to something, whether in your personal life or your professional life, is one of the most fundamental activities of success.

Commitments are extremely powerful because they influence how we think, how we sound, and how we act which in turn influences what others think of us.

We discuss how making a real commitment can mean that you try harder, you look for innovative solutions when faced with obstacles, you don’t consider quitting as an option, you are persistent and extremely resilient.

A meaningful commitment helps you handle things when times get tough.  One of the keys to fulfilling meaningful commitments is to not over commit:  Prioritise, Be proactive and have right attitude - leaders always commit to having a positive attitude.

Charles Feltman describes trust as “choosing to risk making something you value vulnerable to another person's actions” ... that is, what are you willing to risk with someone?

In this podcast episode, Catherine and Maire delve into this topic of trust and look at how it can empower our relationships with those around us and indeed our relationship with God. You might like to ask yourself, what's something you value personally? ... when did you entrust that item, project, or situation to someone? and if not, would you take the risk of trusting them with it?

We grow when we feel trusted. But how easy it is for our trust to be eroded. In today’s podcast we explore how we gain someone’s trust; by being trustworthy ourselves. The good news is we do not need to be perfect to be trusted. In fact trust and mistakes can co-exist. But trust cannot co-exist with double standards – one for me and one for you.

We discuss how our religious faith can become the solid rock on which our trust is built; seeing Christ in another person is what energises our efforts. It is an act of faith. There is no growth without risk and facing up to fears. But it is worth the effort as trust is the oxygen for personal growth and growth in our relationships.

It’s always good to consider the ways that we need to improve. But there’s a difference between self-reflection and negative self-talk. Negative self-talk isn’t constructive, and it rarely motivates us to make any changes: “I can’t do anything right” versus “I need to find ways to manage my time better.”  And sometimes it can start out small, like picking out little things we don’t like about ourselves. But if we don’t know how to recognize, address, or prevent negative self-talk, it can turn into anxiety and, in extreme cases, self-hatred. Here’s how you can turn down the volume on your inner critic and turn it around.

There has been a real trend in the last while of finding meaning in less. Rather than searching out bigger and better experiences which were very in vogue in the early noughties (remember the craze for bungy jumping?), people have reached saturation point and want to find greater simplicity in their lives (minimalism, sustainability, detoxing, etc.).

So what about little things? Our lives are made up of little things: much of our day is made up “maintenance”: maintaining equilibrium to allow ourselves to recharge and grow. These routines can seem boring and meaningless, but when done with love and intention, we can find a deeper meaning behind them all and find flourishing there.

At this time of year – New Year’s resolutions have worn off - they are sort of pushed to one side while we get on with the job of living. We have got through nearly 2 years of Covid so we may almost resent the idea of New Year's Resolutions.

How can we do less but accomplish more? But we can be fearful – it is not to eliminate the things you care about from your life. It’s simply to get laser-focused on why they matter to you. We cannot do it all – that idea – we cannot do it all is a wonderful reminder or wake-up call for us women who often feel guilt-tripped into precisely doing it all – the perfect Mum, wife, or girl-friend, perfect career woman. We have a list of expectations as long as our arms and frankly, they are unfair and unjust and can lead to great frustration.

We wanted in this podcast to talk about some questions we can ask ourselves that could help our listeners to think about what they need to do less to accomplish more. That is different for everyone.

Mark Twain once said, “The 2 most important days in your life: The day you were born and the day you discover why.” Core values point to our 'why'. Without core values, we don’t know what we live for and we don’t know where we are going.

We cannot live off someone else’s values. We need to own our values. In this podcast episode, we explore why we need to understand our values more deeply, grasp them as intellectual truths to make them our own. Also, why we need a plan in real-time to get input and connect with God if we are serious about owning our values.  If God is with us we too will experience conversions or moments of grace as part of our journey.

Our conversations about marriage often focus on practicalities, the mortgage, house, date, hotel booking. The excitement around the couple, the relationship itself, often gets lost. We are joined by Maria Kilcommins on this episode to talk about how to best prepare for marriage or remain happily married.

Maria has spoken on this topic at a recent retreat for women in Lismullin Conference Centre.  Maria is a Mum of 4, married to Shane living in Charleville Co. Cork.    She suggests that all of one's life is a preparation for marriage. In fact each friendship and relationship paves the way for the marriage bond.  No one arrives to marriage perfect. Both arrive ready to journey together.   She discusses marriage as ultimately a friendship, a journey and a commitment not so much a destination.  The secret of a good marriage is virtue - the choice to love by being better, kinder, more patient. For couples marrying in the Catholic tradition, Maria talks about the sacrament of marriage as a source of renewal and strength in married life.

Catherine explores the variety of spiritual books out there, each of which serves different purposes; biographies, books on personal prayer, doctrinal books which help us to understand more fully what we believe.  What books would you recommend to someone who has never read a spiritual book in their lives? and what one can make prayer doable for those who want to start a prayer life? Catherine suggests some great titles that help you to know the person of Christ.
