Teaching methods based on this idea can make it harder for children to learn how to read. In this podcast, host Emily Hanford investigates the influential authors who promote this idea and the company that sells their work. It's an exposé of how educators came to believe in something that isn't true and are now reckoning with the consequences — children harmed, money wasted, an education system upended.

Featured ContentThe COVID-19 Pandemic taught educators many valuable lessons. Teachers all over the world were forced to change how they taught students almost overnight. For months educators implemented new strategies and refined old ones to maximize our time with students in a variety of situations.
But now, as the world and education begin to return to "normal" we find ourselves faced with the decision of what to do with our new learning as teachers or what place these new skills have in our face-to-face classrooms.

What We're Listening ToStacey - Planet Money: Origins of a Superhero - Comic book publishers like Marvel and DC sit on a treasure trove: thousands and thousands of comic book characters. Pieces of intellectual property. You know the big ones--Superman, Ironman, Captain America. They each make millions off of movies and merchandise. But for every marquee character, there are hundreds of others sitting unused.
We can't abide by that. Superheroes are meant to save the day, not be stowed away. So we thought: why not convince Marvel to sell us one?

What We’re Listening To AJ: Code Switch (NPR) – A Decade of Watching Black People Die (5/21/2020) – The last few weeks have been filled with devastating news — stories about the police killing black people. At this point, these calamities feel familiar — so familiar, in fact, that their details have begun to echo each other. * In July 2014, a cellphone video captured some of Eric Garner’s final words as New York City police officers sat on his head and pinned him to the ground on a sidewalk: “I can’t breathe.” On May 25 of this year, the same words were spoken by George Floyd, who pleaded for release as an officer knelt on his neck and pinned him to the ground on a Minneapolis street. * Chris:* Throughline (NPR) – American Police (6/4/2020) – Black Americans being victimized and killed by the police is an epidemic. A truth many Americans are acknowledging since the murder of George Floyd, as protests have occurred in all fifty states calling for justice on his behalf. But this tension between African American communities and the police has existed for centuries. This week, the origins of American policing and how those origins put violent control of Black Americans at the heart of the system.

It will take us from the Russian laboratory of Ivan Pavlov, to a dolphin exhibit in Hawaii, to a top teaching hospital in New York. It’s about a method to quiet the noise. The sort of clutter that can turn learning into a minefield of misery. Students care more about getting praise than learning.
Not all learning can be gamified, and not all learning can be broken down into a series of steps

Featured ContentTeaching is about relationships. While students, parents, and administrators all expect you to partner with them, your connections with colleagues will play the largest role in your ability to enjoy your work and grow as a professional.
Tracy from Rhode Island, our guest from episode 56, had some great insight following our episode 57 discussion about the value of Twitter for educators today.
In a vox to our PodcastPD Voxer group, she honed in on AJ’s point about building your PLN and connecting and learning from the teachers closest to you. Those would be your colleagues in your grade level, department, and your building and district.
So today we’re going to talk about ways we’ve been great colleagues, failed at being great colleagues, and we hope to inspire your next positive teaching relationship.

Chris: Art of Manliness #551: Inside the Gangsters’ Code – Lou Ferrante was a mobster who worked for the Gambino crime family and made a trade out of hijacking trucks loaded with expensive goods. Eventually, the law caught up with him and he ended up in prison. There, he discovered a love for reading and writing which set off a personal transformation that led to him leaving the mafia. After his stint in jail, Lou went on to become an author and the host of a Discovery Channel documentary series called Inside the Gangsters’ Code.
Stacey: Note to Self-How to Create Good Digital Citizens – Right from wrong. We teach our kids what this means in the classroom and at home. But what about online? The next generation of tech users could be a part of much more civilized digital universe, but only if they learn how now. Manoush talks to Richard Culatta (CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education) about the five steps to creating good digital citizens, and how to turn the current online “culture shift” into something positive, respectful, and more accessible to all.

What We’re Listening ToAJ: Feedback (and Other Dirty Words): Why We Fear It, How to Fix It by M. Tamra Chandler and Laura Grealish (audiobook)
Feedback: the mere mention of the word can make our blood pressure rise and our defenses go up. For many of us, it’s a dirty word that we associate with bias, politics, resentment, and self-doubt. However, if we take a step back and think about its true intent, we realize that feedback needn’t be a bad thing. After all, understanding how others experience us provides valuable opportunities to learn and grow.
The authors explain how feedback got such a bad rap and how to recognize and minimize the negative physical and emotional responses that can erode trust and shut down communication. They offer a new and more ambitious definition of feedback, explore the roles we each play as Seeker, Extender, and Receiver, and introduce the three Fs of making feedback focused, fair, and frequent.
When it’s done right, the feedback has been proven to be the most effective means of improving communication and performance for you and your organization. It’s too important to give up, and with Chandler and Grealish’s help, you’ll be able to use it deftly, equitably, and effectively.
Chris: Danica Patrick – Pretty Intense – I’m Danica Patrick and I’m Pretty Intense! I believe that each and every one of us has the power within ourselves to create the life that we really want. And I want to inspire you to go conquer your dreams, both professionally and personally. That’s why I created this podcast.
Stacey: Land of the Giants – In less than two decades, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos scaled an online marketplace for books into the world’s most valuable company. But at what cost? From Prime and HQ2, to the growing adoption of smart speakers and home cameras, to increasing scrutiny of Amazon’s power and its role in the changing nature of work, Vox and Recode’s new podcast, Land of the Giants: The Rise of Amazon, addresses it all with detailed, thought-provoking, measured reporting from host Jason Del Rey. And it’s not just for insiders. This show is an essential guide to Amazon’s backstory for those unfamiliar and offers never-before-told, behind-the-scenes stories for the Amazon-obsessed.

What We’re Listening ToAJ: Art of Manliness Episode 325: Leading Quietly
When we think of being a good leader, we often think we need to be a bold, visionary, risk-taking type like Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, or Steve Jobs.
Joseph Badaracco argues that most of the day-to-day work that makes the world function is done by individuals who stand outside the limelight and lead with calm confidence. He’s the author of the book Leading Quietly: An Unorthodox Guide to Doing the Right Thing. Joe discusses the heroic archetype of leadership, why most leadership development books and courses focus on it, and why heroic leadership can actually get in the way of an organization’s success. He then shares the qualities of a quiet leader and why they’re often more effective than heroic leaders at getting things done in an organization.

What We’re Listening ToAJ: The Big Leap – Most of us believe that we will finally feel satisfied and content with our lives when we get the good news we have been waiting for, find a healthy relationship, or achieve one of our personal goals. However, this rarely happens. Good fortune is often followed by negative emotions that overtake us and result in destructive behaviors. “I don’t deserve this,” “this is too good to be true,” or any number of harmful thought patterns prevent us from experiencing the joy and satisfaction we have earned. In The Big Leap, Hendricks reveals a simple yet comprehensive program for overcoming this barrier to happiness and fulfillment, presented in a way that engages both the mind and heart. The book describes the four hidden fears that are at the root of the Upper Limit Problem. The Big Leap delivers a proven method for first identifying which of these four fears prevents us from reaching our personal upper limit, and then breaking through that limitation to achieve what Hendricks refers to as our Zone of Genius.
Chris: The Rain Delay – Looking for advanced stats, game breakdowns, and game nuances? Welp, you’re looking in the wrong place. But if you want to talk mascots, memorabilia, and moments? We’re here from you. Each week, Cooperstown Kurt will welcome a guest from the world of baseball to talk about the lighter side of the game. Player interviews, movie breakdowns, and an “On The Road” subset are just some of the episodes you’ll hear.
First episode – “The Sandlot” Director David Mickey Evans
Stacey: When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing – Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don’t know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of “when” decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork.
Timing, it’s often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.
Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology, and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work, and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule? Why do certain breaks dramatically improve student test scores? How can we turn a stumbling beginning into a fresh start? Why should we avoid going to the hospital in the afternoon? Why is singing in time with other people as good for you as exercise? And what is the ideal time to quit a job, switch careers, or get married?
In When, Pink distills cutting-edge research and data on timing and synthesizes them into a fascinating, readable narrative packed with irresistible stories and practical takeaways that give readers compelling insights into how we can live richer, more engaged lives.

Featured ContentThematic Instruction in Social Studies has been a topic of discussion between Chris and AJ for over a year. During the 2017-18 school year, Chris changed his instruction to follow the 10 Themes of Social Studies. He eliminated traditional tests/quizzes, homework, and notetaking in favor of a project-based, student-centered classroom. While Chris does get pushback from some administrators on this approach his students’ enjoyment of the class and increased levels of engagement are all the proof he needed to continue and to help AJ bring this approach to his class as well.

Feedback and Shoutouts Hey guys! I love this most recent episode of Podcast PD. So much of it resounds with me. I moved to [a new] School District…this year. You guys are in Jersey and I’m sure are at least vaguely familiar with happenings in the regional urban districts. It’s crazy. I’ve been thinking this all year. The new district is all about data and rules. There is close to zero human element in regard to the teachers and students. Chris mentioned the idea of teachers only referring to one another as Mr. and Mrs. I TOTALLY FEEL YOU THERE. I encourage people to call me [name redacted]! People don’t even say the Mr. or Mrs. You are addressed by your last name when it comes from the P or many other colleagues. While this is not the intention, but I totally feel like the human element is stripped when you can’t address someone by their first name. I love your “action items” at the end of the episode. I’m going to try to pick something up for my grade partner and her resident teacher. Great idea! Thanks for all you all do. Y’all are an inspiration! * Jen Duda (via Voxer) @DynamicDuda338 – OK. Just listened to the latest podcast regarding Human Element in Ed. and I thought it was awesome!!! Episode: #360: Understanding Male Friendships
Description: It’s a common trope that adult men don’t value friendship as much as their female counterparts and that men really don’t need or want friends like women do. But my guest today argues that assumption is wrong and comes from viewing friendship from a strictly female point of view. In fact, based on his research, most adult men very much want good friends but just don’t know how to make them. What’s more, he says, male friendships look different from female ones and we should stop judging the quality of male friendships based on how women do them.

We talk about the science of burnout: what it is, how it feels, and why it happens. Then based on our understanding of the information, we’ve got some recommendations for you to combat with burnout and fatigue as an educator.

The use of HyperDocs is on the rise in 1:1 classrooms across the country. as they allow for increased student engagement and student-directed work. Join us as we ease confusion between a HyperDoc and a Doc with Links.
Featured Content* What is a hyperdoc? * The term HyperDocs was coined by Lisa Highfill, Kelly Hilton, and Sarah Landis. * Cult of Pedagogy episode 70 – Jennifer Gonzalez interviewed Lisa Highfill, Kelly Hilton, and Sarah Landis – https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/hyperdocs * A HyperDoc is a digital document—such as a Google Doc—where all the parts of a lesson or multiple lessons have been pulled together into one main location. Within this single document, students are provided with hyperlinks to all of the resources they need to complete a variety of tasks and engage themselves in the learning. * HyperDocs vs A Doc with Links * How to Build a HyperDoc Lesson – Parts of a HyperDoc * Many HyperDocs follow this basic template that takes students through six steps of a lesson: * Engage: Hook your students, get them engaged, and activate prior knowledge. You might use a fun video, interactive website, or audio recording. * Explore: Link resources, such as videos or articles, for students to explore more information. * Explain: Clarify the learning objective for your students. This is where you could teach a whole group lesson with direct instruction, or add additional resources for students to explore. * Apply: What do you want students to create to demonstrate their learning? Give instructions for the assignment. * Share: Provide a way for students to share their work and receive feedback. * Reflect: Pause for reflection (whole class, think-pair-share, etc.) or link them to a digital way to share their thoughts. * Extend: This portion is great for early finishers. Provide extra activities, additional online resources, or challenge them with an extension assignment to extend their thinking.

Featured ContentMike Andriulli joins us as our first-ever guest on the podcast! In this episode, we’re talking all about ASCD Empower 2017, as well as conference attendance benefits. Mike shares his experience at the west coast conference, highlighting a session with education power-house, Baruti Kafele, one of the most sought-after educational speakers in the country. Other conference highlights include using math performance tasks, which Mike plans to turnkey to his district in the near future, as well as personal conversations had during downtimes. Mike’s biggest regret/criticism was his inability to attend all the sessions he wanted to attend; the offerings were so robust that he could have easily attended more than one offering per session — we should all have that problem!
Mike goes on to discuss his role in bringing new strategies to the teachers of his district and passionately shares his views that it is NOT ok for teachers to say, “I’m just not a math person.” We hope you enjoy our conversation with Mike as much as we did.
Mike Andriulli is the Supervisor of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, at Hillsdale Public Schools (NJ). A former elementary and Math teacher, Mike has degrees from both Rowan University and Ramapo College. He is a well-respected educational leader with experience in curriculum design, staff development, and technology integration. Mike is also a member of the North New Jersey Chapter of ASCD.

What We Are LearningAJ is continuing to research and learn about ways to help students create a growth mindset and change the culture of the middle school social studies classroom. He is also taking the time to learn more about the use of learning menus, asynchronous and personalized learning, which will hopefully create a stronger student-centered classroom experience.
Chris continues to learn a lot about 20% Time and has implemented it for the last marking period with his High School Social Studies students. He has limited prior experience when it comes to this topic but is not afraid to try and put this opportunity in front of the students.
Stacey has recently learned how not to deliver PD at a recent conference/PD Day. She was also able to pick up a few copies of Denis Sheeran’s book Instant Relevance and hope to be leading a book group with my team. It was a great book with ideas that can easily be brought back to her team.

What you’ll hear resembles the casual intimacy of game night at a friend’s house: one where scores are forgotten in favor of hilarious gaffes.

To help these writers, poets, dancers, and comedians she enlists the help of several friends including Sarah Jones, Neil Gaiman, Gary Shteyngart, Amy Purdy, Michael Ian Black, Brandon Stanton, Martha Beck, and Glennon Doyle Melton. Magic Lessons are roadmaps for the path to creativity, the extra nudge we need when we’re feeling stuck in our creative lives. FEATURED CONTENTYour Professional Personal Learning Network (PLN) is an invaluable resource to both your career in education as well as your private life outside the walls of your school. In the third episode of PodcastPD, Chris, AJ, and I discuss the people you should include in our PLN and how to go about building a PLN of your own (step 1-include US!).
Personally, we like to build our PLN with people who are: like-minded, share the same interests, share ideas, positive and upbeat, and push our learning and thinking. We connect in a variety of ways and a variety of platforms, from Twitter and Voxer to Facebook and CoffeeEdu (be brave-start your own!). We even discuss less traditional but more fun ways to connect with you PLN, like DinerEdu, EdCampOut, and BoardGameEdu! What would be your entry point for building your PLN? Who would you connect with?

Chris recommended a podcast from WNYC (NPR) called Note to Self. His wife recently turned him on to this podcast and his jumping off point was a series of episodes called The Privacy Paradox.
What is the Privacy Paradox? It’s the term behavioral economists use to describe the disconnect between our feelings about digital privacy (we value it!) and how we act online (we give privacy away!).
Stacey is back to listening to podcasts (YAY!) after a really long affair with the OverDrive app! She recently listened to NPR’s Hidden Brain, specifically episodes 59 and 60. Each of these episodes deal with current events and have a place in any SS, political science, psychology, or humanities class.
PodcastPD Mailbag Shout out to Bruce Reicher (@breicher), fellow NJ educator who is enjoying the podcast and let us know by tweeting to us @PodcastPD. Thanks for listening Bruce! * Shout out to Tina Monteleone (@tinamonte*), another NJ educator, she’s a MS technology teacher and college professor who has enjoyed the launch and beginnings of this podcast!

PodcastPD is back! AJ, Chris, and I are so happy to be creating this podcast for you. As you will learn in this episode this new podcast is a little different from the original #PodcastPD Twitter chat.
Our goal with the podcast is to provide you with the PD you’re not getting in your faculty meetings or another district's professional development.
We would be honored if you would subscribe to the podcast and include us in your podcast listening schedule. Look for a new episode every few weeks!
Featured ContentIn this episode, Chris, AJ and I discuss the origin of #PodcastPD (it all started with a little blog post), the resulting Twitter chat, our expectations for professional development, topics we might explore in coming episodes, and how we like to learn best.
What’s PodcastPD About?PodcastPD is a bi-monthly show where your hosts will come together to discuss some hot topics in education, the professional development we are taking part in within our districts, as well as the topics and areas of discussion we are leading for others.
How We LearnAs with many of you, there is no one way that Chris, AJ, and I learn. We use myriad methods to inform our practice and improve ourselves both professionally and personally. Chris and AJ learn by doing and taking part in demonstrations. An emphasis is placed on teaching and movement. I, on the other hand, will soak up new information I am interested in any way it is delivered; be it a book, podcast, or anything on the internet. Just don’t ask us to sit through a boring panel discussion!
