In today's #coffeewithatherapist, I'm answering the following questions:
- If a trauma has caused a lack of emotional and physical intimacy in your relationship, what can be expected in your relationship?
- What can you do as their partner to be supportive and also ensure that your needs are also being considered?
- Are there practices for reintroducing healthy physical intimacy and at what point is it appropriate?
- What, if any, are realistic expectations as outcomes of trauma therapy? Ie. Will this aspect of our relationship ever be fulfilling?
- When and how to discover that the trauma might not be the cause of lack of intimacy?

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, I describe some of the more commonly known forms of "childhood adverse events" by going through the ACE study questions and resilience factors. Next episode we will delve into the lesser known or less obvious childhood traumas to help you connect the dots if you are struggling with symptoms of trauma.

Most of us have some of these, and even if your ACE score is high there is A LOT we can do to reverse it (me and many of my clients are walking proof). Hugs & support to y'all!

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, I explain specific examples of toxic family beliefs and rules. This will help you understand some of the beliefs that you may have yet to heal or subtle ways our family's intergenerational trauma leaked into our family system.

Most families have at least one or two of these (and that's okay!) what's best is if we are able to get curious about them and heal it for the next generation.

Feel free to add some additional ones to the comments to help expand this definition for others. :)

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about how to set boundaries with difficult people. Difficult people include: those you have to set boundaries with multiple times because they "forget" and those who respond with passive-aggressiveness, distance, anxiety, hostility, or anger.

If someone is physically or emotionally abusive in response to your boundaries -- no amount of tips or tricks will help this. It's important you seek/find safety and do safety planning around this.

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about specific examples of healthy boundaries we may set with our family members.

We will cover:
1. Boundaries around communication, travel, and spending time together
2. Boundaries around non-triangulation and keeping secrets secret
3. Boundaries around listening well and setting up times to connect/communicate
4. Boundaries around toxic conversations, judgment/criticism, and uncomfortable topics
4. Grief and loss when family members aren't emotionally safe and don't respect our boundaries

Remember, it's important to have an equitable consequence for each boundary that we set. Without a consequence, a boundary is just a threat.

2. How boundaries can be small, subtle and not always a "bigger conversation" but more of how we address things in the moment.
3. What general rights we have in healthy relationships

In today's #coffeewithatherapist we are talking about one of the big signs you are making progress in therapy (or healing your mental health concerns).

Specifically, I talk about anxiety & depression -- but this often applies to the other complex emotions and disorders people have as well. The path is not linear, and so it is to be expected that we will "relapse" in certain ways and it's important to understand what is healthy emotion and something for us to pay attention to.

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, I was inspired by my own struggles and others inquiring about how we might navigate COVID-19 mandates of wearing a mask & other changes with our mental health in tact. And how we can be kind to ourselves and those who are enforcing it.

I'll be addressing the following:
1. My own psychological struggles with mask-wearing and how I've navigated them
2. Gaining big picture perspective
3. Owning our power in how we respond
4. Doing what's the least stressful for ourselves, others, and our financial, emotional, and physical wellbeing
5. Celebrating the little things and rebelling in ways that are positive "i.e. wearing sassy, colored masks"

I'd love to hear your thoughts and questions on this one. I started with a not-so-great perspective and shifted as I was able to gain perspective and realize that my ego was often navigating my frustration. I am not a medical expert or political expert, my only hopes in this video is to discuss the psychology around our responses to mandates and change during COVID-19.

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about the ways we can identify or connect the dots when it comes to our behaviors that indicate that we've had trauma.

FIRST - I'd recommend working with a professional that specializes in trauma, as these things can be complex, and often our brain can shield us/encodes trauma memories different than other memories (and there's a good reason for that).
Some reasons we may struggle to connect the dots:
1. Trauma memories are encoded differently
2. Often childhood trauma is invalidated and normalized "every kid gets bullied"
3. Intergenerational trauma (trauma that happened to the generations before us) can often be passed down in subtle ways

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about the different free/low cost and accessible options for healing trauma and mental health problems if you don't have access to good, affordable mental healthcare.

First, I want to say that I will always advocate seeing a therapist/a professional (if it's possible) as the best option. However, I also realize that this is not accessible to all and so I wanted to answer questions on my TikTok from people in varying situations and living in various places -- how can we heal ourselves / work to heal trauma if we can't see a therapist?

In this video I label the 4 ways, including bibliotherapy -- here are some of my personal recommendations that come to mind easily as transformative books/authors:
1. The Dance of Anger - Harriet Lerner (and many of her books)
2. Loving Him without Losing You - Beverly Engel (and many of her books)
3. Mindsight by Dr. Dan Siegel (and many of his other books)
4. The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk
5. For relationship trauma/problems, books by Dr. John Gottman
6. For perfectionists, Type As, and givers -- The 10 Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown
Other authors: Peter Levine, Dr. Gabor Mate (for addiction help), Dr. Anita Johnston for Eating Disorders and Body Image.

I'd love to hear your feedback and any recommendations you might add as well as things we can do or books that helped you on your healing journey.

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking all about the 3 ways I've seen happiness be a bad, scary, or avoided emotion in my clients and even my own life. I'll also discuss the ways we can heal this and work towards being more comfortable with an emotion many of us claim to want or be seeking.

  1. Happiness feels scary because we are waiting for the other shoe to drop
  2. Happiness feels bad because we have guilt about those who are struggling
  3. Happiness feels uncomfortable because we are used to always being on the go and achieving the next "big goal" or life event (i.e. marriage, kids, job promotion, retirement, etc.)

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, I'll be answering the q: "I'm struggling to write my 4th step in my 12 step program. Any suggestions?"

I'll discuss ways that we can identify and make peace with our resentments/exhiles and identify some of the parts that often contribute to "acting out" behaviors whether it's with addiction, eating disorders, or some other mental health concern. We all have these parts and it's so important we are able to know what they are, when they show up, and how we can learn what they need to not interject into our lives when we are struggling.

Feel free to provide feedback or thoughts! I'm no AA expert, but this is just my take on how we identify and make peace with our parts (and hopefully apply this grace to others who have hurt us in our life when we are ready).

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, I'll be giving a concrete example of how to create "a goal with soul". You'll learn about how to tie your goals to who you are at your core versus tying your goals to fear, shame, or "shoulds". This is part of the crucial work I do with clients in therapy, and I've seen/experienced this method being an effective, long-term way of setting goals (and finding our sense of direction) for every area of our life.

This is probably one of my favorite #coffeewithatherapist videos because it's such an important topic and has helped many of my clients have "aha" moments. In this video, I will talk about all the subtle (and not so subtle) ways people can exhibit unresolved childhood or relationship trauma. There are a lot of mindsets and red flags that impact the way people see the world and ultimately their quality of life. Tune in to see if you have any of those red flags -- as it may be worth considering if you have some unresolved trauma in your life and the hidden ways it's impacting your day-to-day.

In today's #coffeewithatherpist, we are talking all about anxiety (duh duh duh, queue ominous theme music).
I'll be answering the following questions:
1. What is normal anxiety vs. an anxiety disorder?
2. How do we know if we struggle with chronic anxiety?
3. When should we seek help or take it more seriously?
4. What does anxiety often get mislabled as?
5. What are the hidden signs of an anxiety disorder if we don't realize we are experiencing chronic anxiety?

Excited to talk about this very important topic and even share my own quirky anxiety trigger with y'all.

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about intergenerational trauma. We used to believe that when family members died, that their trauma and mental health died with them. We now understand not just in family systems theory, but also science how trauma that doesn't get resolved gets passed down.

The good news? We can heal this trauma and be "gatekeepers" for the generations to come. AND we can have more grace and perspective for our family members that are struggling with their emotional and mental health.

I would love your comments or feedback. Happy Tuesday!

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about an expanded definition of what trauma is, both "little T and big T" traumas and how we know if we have worked through or resolved some of it. Understanding what trauma is a BIG first step in making positive changes in our lives and our relationships. Often people don't realize how much some of the "little T" traumas get in the way of their career, life, spiritual, and relationship success. It's one of the reasons that I believe that many people can benefit from therapy (even when they are not in a "desparate" or "bad" place or feeling like they NEED it).

I would love your thoughts and feedback. Happy Thursday!

Kindness matters. Not just because it's a "nice thing to say" or masked as a way to avoid pain and the hard stuff. Kindness matters. In the research on shame, feelings of shame and being overly negative actually don't create change in the long-run, and often keep people stuck. So when we are looking to make change, make hard decisions, or responding to those who are being negative -- kindness matters. There is a lot of hurt out there -- we all have it inside of us, some more so than others, some we've caused to others. However, when we do things from a place of hurt, we often end up creating more hurt and pain. Kindness still means and empowers healthy boundaries, advocacy, and change. Kindness is not weak. For me, boundaried kindness is what happens when my ego and insecurities aren't driving the bus. Kindness is healing (or at least provides that opportunity even if the other person isn't in a place to absorb it). Kindness matters.

Let's be real. 2020 has been challenging, stressful, and eye-opening for us all. With all of the bad stuff, there is opportunity for growth and beautiful things. In the meantime, many of us our still in the thick of "all the feelings" and it's important we are connected to self-grace and resources. Here's an honest recap of compassion fatigue and how to give ourselves some grace during these uncertain and stressful times (although often the growth is necessary, we must be resourced to grow).

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are delving into the topic of masculinity with Andrew Jamison, LPC. We discuss how masculinity shows up in therapy, it's historical context in American culture (and the "silent soldier"), and both the strengths and weaknesses of our current cultural views of masculinity.

Masculinity is present in and impacts both genders. Femininity has strengths and weaknesses as well. We also talk about WHY it's important that people are in touch with and able to talk about their own emotions.

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we talk about parentified children and how to heal the ways they are in relationships as a response to their early childhood (if unresolved).

You may have been parentified if a parental figure relied on you for their emotional, financial, or physical support. This may also be the case if a caregiver relied on you to take care of other siblings, or if you ended up being the emotional go-to or listener in your family.

As a result, in adulthood and romantic relationships you may overly function for others, seek partners who aren't emotionally mature/independent, and feel resentment that others ultimately don't give to you in the ways you give to others.

9's can space out and forget to do things -- don't take it too personally. They enjoy slowing things down with their partners and simply "hanging out".

The best way to connect with 9's is to approach them with calm and meet them at their level of peace. 9's bring big picture perspective to their partners, are great listeners, and engage them in looking at "the simple things in life". However, it's also important that we listen TO them as well and honor the times they do look into their personal wants, needs, and emotions.

Nines are incredibly passionate about fairness. They do their best to avoid "conflict" and are more likely to withdraw or be passive-aggressive when they are angry. If you see this behavior, try to connect with them and let them know that you are there for them. See if you can find something that feels fair for both of you and that their opinion matters. .

Nines may have a hard time setting boundaries, and instead build up internal resentment (unintentionally) toward their partners. As their loved one, it helps to set boundaries with them and encourage them to do the same. Nines can also need help with feeling supported and encouraged with getting out of their comfort zone.

Those in relationship with a nine, often feel valued and supported by their partner, but can struggle with wanting their partner to speak up for themselves. As peacemakers, they add a lot of calm and grounding to the naturally more amped up types of the enneagram.

Today on #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about Type 8 of the enneagram in relationships!

8's like to be in control and have high energy. They are easily goaded into competitions and a non-competitive partner might be annoying to the strong-willed 8. However, a partner who has enough of an edge to stand up to an 8, but enough agreeability to let the 8 have strong opinions without being offended will be an ideal partner.

8's can struggle with not wanting to show or admit any "weaknesses", which can lead to a lot of defensive arguing. 8's arguments can cut like knifes when they aren't acting in self-awareness. If your partner is an 8, it's best to understand their aggressiveness as their means of trying to maintain a sense of control and power vs. as a direct threat to the relationship.

When in a healthy space, 8's can be the fun, spicy, opinionated significant other who can also act as a great leader. When 8's have a strong purpose they believe in, they will do what it takes to support that purpose and can use their nature for movement and good in the world. Using their energy and zest for constructive projects and constructive relationship goals make them wonderful partners who provide energy, direction, and life to their relationships and the world around them.

Yay for 7's -- I'm totally biased here as a type 7 and I will be vulnerable and state that I can relate to both the good and bad parts of being a 7 (even the embarrassing commitment part).

If you want any further clarification, don't hesitate to message me, and I'm happy to share what might be helpful.

Type 7's in love: You are high energy, spontaneous, and love to try new things and have experiences. When healthy, they bring positivity, joy, and gratitude to their relationships that permeates even the gloomiest of people. They bring good conversation and positivity to their romantic partners.
On the downside, they do not like being tied-down to routines, empty commitments, or rules that don't make sense. This can look like struggling with FOMO about other relationship partners or experiences and struggling with commitment to their partner. They hate to feel as if they are limiting their life in any way, and sometimes this leaks into how they feel about their relationship partners.

7's can also struggle with impatience, and wanting their relationship to be more complete and developed than it really is. Learning patience with life and relationships unfolding over time is CRUCIAL for the 7.

Lastly, 7's can be a bit impulsive with what they say which can be problematic in the heat of an argument. This can lead to their partner being hurt or not trusting their words if they come back to correct their original version with their more-thought out and often more truthful version.

Today on #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about type 6 in relationships! And I share that you can see my funny short videos on the different types on my instagram @jennyannhelms -- check it out if you want something silly in your day.

Enneagram type 6 in love:
6's desire to feel secure and seek to gain that security through their loyalty in relationships. They are good at working toward building strong, lasting, and stable relationships and value trustworthiness, although they can often struggle to trust others and loved ones at first.
6's when not in a healthy state, may project their own feelings (both positive and negative) onto others. Clear statement of your position

They identify problem areas -- don't deny them.

In relationships they are known for making balanced, thought-out decisions, they are dedicated to working through the hard stuff, and unwavering loyalty. However, they can bother some types romantically because they can take a long time to make decisions and even avoid them (as they go back and forth in their heads), and they have a hard time letting go of unhealthy relationships,

They work best with those who show appreciation for them and their loyalty, who remain calm, who are positive focused, not afraid of owning the problems in the relationship, and trustworthy.

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about type 5's, the observer, in relationships.
Type 5 in love: Observers need a partner who won't try to force them to go out to places they hate: crowded parties, loud environments or basically anything requiring a lot of social interaction.

You will also prefer someone who is a good listener, as you'll get irritated with having to repeat yourself. It takes a LOT of effort for you to put your thoughts into words in the first place.

When you are feeling uncomfortable in social settings, others may perceive you as being "aloof" or as judging them, but really it's your anxiety that keeps you quiet.

You need time and space to process your emotions so you'll need a partner who respects that and allows you that time and space. Just make sure to communicate that need to them so they don't see it as rejection.

If you don't know what your number is, you can do the Rheti short version via http://www.9types.com/rheti/index.phpor the long version through the Enneagram institute.

Today on this Friday's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking all about type 4's in love.

For my type 4's out there: you need a partner who is lighthearted enough to avoid the pitfalls of your depressive moods, since you don't always want to come out of them. You'll benefit by being with someone who doesn't "go there" with you and maintains their own emotional experiences. It's also best you have a partner who lets you do things in your own, creative way without criticism or shame. Highly intuitive, you're best suited with a partner who appreciates your intuition and your ability to read your own and other's emotions. Due to this sensitivity, it's important that your partner also be able to hold space for your emotional experiences and encourage you to process them in a healthy way.

Grateful for the incredible gifts and creativity of the 4's, when you flourish you are the innovators and gifted artists that we all envy. You are also in touch with emotions (having a high EQ) without being overwhelmed by them.

On today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about type 3's in love:
Type three: you need a partner who is independent enough to leave you alone while you focus on your work and who has a peaceful, agreeable disposition. Anyone who burdens you with emotional drama is going to get the boot very quickly because you have a really hard time holding emotions or finding value in emotional displays.

You constantly are worried about not achieving the kind of success you'd like to achieve in the world, and you prefer those who can tell you how proud they are of your accomplishments.

Ultimately, you need someone who is just as focused on their own success or is very independent in nature. The hope is that you can use some of that goal-directed energy on working on building closeness and depth in your intimate relationships and integrating empathy into your life.

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking all about type two of the enneagram in relationships. Type 2's in love: As a Helper type, you tend to focus more on others than you do on yourself, and romantically, you need someone who can remind you that YOU matter, too.

As someone who feels insecure about other people not listening to you as much as you might listen to them, you also need someone who will reassure you that you're interesting and is a good listener. You may also over-function for your partner and not realizing that when you do, that you aren't giving them the space to learn or do for themselves.

You'll also need to learn how to focus inward and be what might feel "selfish" or "frivolous" in your relationships. Spending that time refueling you will be one of the most loving things you can do for your partners. Although you will likely struggle to identify your OWN needs since you are often focusing on the needs of others, and self-care for you looks more like taking things off of your plate and doing less.

Today on #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about type 1's (also known as the "reformer" or perfectionists) in love - their tendencies, ways of expressing emotions, etc.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about when I say "Enneagram type 1" refer to the bottom of this and take the short RHETI test to find out more about the 9 types (and what YOUR type likely is).

Type #1's in love: you require a lot of reassurance that you are appreciated just for being yourself. You need this reassurance often because you are SO hard on yourself. You'll likely be happier with those who see the good in you and are more agreeable around flaws and the messiness of life.

You're most likely to be attracted to someone who values your good advice and who takes on their "equal" share of work.

If you don't know what your number is, you can do the Rheti short version via http://ow.ly/Mjj950zIFJO
or the long version through the Enneagram institute.

First, BEFORE the blasphemy ensues -- I want to be clear that I am not "anti-positive body image" - if that has been helpful for you, that's a wonderful thing. I have found that my clients who have eating disorders (and those who simply struggle from negative body image or low self-esteem) benefit more from focusing on all of the wonderful parts of them that are not tied to "what their body LOOKS like" vs. trying to love what their body looks like. They also heal the parts of them that overly tie their body image (or what they look like) to their self worth. When they do this, they are able to focus on the things they really care about, create things, and have better relationships bc their body image doesn't get in the way of a healthy sex or physical touch. They put themselves out there more, they take more risks, and they live life on their own terms vs. living life through a mirror (i.e. what do I look like TO the world?).

I've found through the experiences of my clients (bc admittedly many of my clients are attractive individuals) that even when they focus on how "attractive or hot they are" or how they love their body parts whether they are attractive to our current culture or not, they STILL miss the big picture and organize their lives around "looking hot" or feeling good about how they look on the outside and lose out on putting their energy into all the other things they are passionate about and their gifts to this world (and overly attach their feelings of self-worth to what they look like).

Ultimately, I hope your takeaway from this video (whether you have positive body image or not) is that you are SO MUCH MORE than what you look like (despite what our current culture/social media may emphasize).

Today on #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about how to get over a break-up and some tangible ways to evaluate what you'll need to work on before getting into another relationship.

The most loving thing that we can do for ourselves and our potential future partners after a break-up is to work on healing past relationship wounds. If we gloss it over, move on quickly or push down our feelings by acting out (drinking, one-night stands, disordered eating, over-working) or jump into a relationship quickly without healing, we will take those relationship wounds into our next relationship and it will impact how we view our partner and how we love (or distance) ourselves from them. It will also impact our capacity for being vulnerable and sharing intimacy.

If after watching this video, you struggle to heal past relationship wounds or have a lot of negative thoughts/beliefs about the world, yourself, or others after a break-up, I'd highly recommend that you work with a therapist on this because it's likely that you have some unresolved relationship trauma or hurt that in therapy, can be resolved. (Let me know if you need any help finding resources -- I've even helped people in other countries get connected to their local mental health resources).

Today on #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about how we specifically build and rebuild trust with people over time after we've been hurt by them. For more on what trustworthiness is, please refer to my previous podcasts on the components of trust and trustworthiness.

For some people, they struggle with trusting others too fast, and others struggle to never trust a person ever. In this video, we talk about a visual and measurable(ish) way to build trust over time without it taking too long or being something that happens overnight. We also talk about what it may look like when big trust "deal breakers" happen, and determining what those are for you.

Learning to trust people is so incredibly worth it. Not just for others, but also for your own sanity and peace of mind.

If after watching this video, you realize that you are a person who trusts wayyyy too fast or never trusts people over time despite them showing you trustworthiness, I'd highly recommend that you work with a therapist on this because it's likely that you have some unresolved relationship trauma or hurt that in therapy, can be resolved. (Let me know if you need any help finding resources -- I've even helped people in other countries get connected to their local mental health resources).

"How do make a long-distance relationship work?" on #coffeewithatherapist.

Today we are talking about 3 different components to consider when deciding to enter into a long-distance relationship and how to make them work if you do decide you want to be in a long-distance relationship.

Long-distance relationships are different than the normal close proximity relationships. Spontaneity and quick connection are not an option. Intention is crucial. We also have to be real with ourselves about our capacity and desire to be in a long-distance relationship or how much time we can feasibly spend apart from loved ones. Everyone is different in this way and there is no right or wrong answer -- just honoring where we are at.

By the end of this video, you will learn more about how to build intention into your relationship, deciding what time-frame is okay with you when it comes to long-distance dating, and honoring that the transitional times or moments you do get to see your loved one may not always be the best, happiest, or easiest -- and that's 100% okay.

Today in #coffeewithatherapist we are getting real. We are getting vulnerable. Dealing with people you don't like or who don't like you is hard. Part of dealing with people means doing the hard thing of having compassion and empathy for someone that doesn't like you or you don't like. For me, it's a little easier to have compassion for the "haters" or people that don't like me, but it can be harder to have compassion for those that I DO like. In this video, I share my own struggles and the ways I've reframed things so that I can have compassion and empathy for the lovers, haters, and annoying people alike (and pointed the finger right back on myself -- because we are all a little annoying / hateworthy).

In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we talk about something that comes up time and time again in my sessions. What if my parents or family members aren't emotionally safe, emotionally available, or there for me? Many people have at least one family member who isn't emotionally available. It's hard because often we REALLY want this emotional attachment, but cannot get it from "blood related" relatives. Luckily, we CAN get these needs met internally and through other "non-blood related" people who are emotionally safe and available.

Today's #coffeewithatherapist is ALL about cognitive distortions that people are having during COVID-19 and the pandemic. These cognitive distortions include things like mental filtering, drawing false conclusions (usually about people), and catastrophizing. I'm seeing this anxiety not only in my clients, but also in the general population and various media sources. What cognitive distortions are you seeing during COVID-19? Can you think of any other examples? Let me know in the comments below. :)

On today's episode of #coffeewithatherapist, we talk all about why being dumped or broken up with can actually be a good, positive thing. In this video I go through 3 different reasons why people break up with others that have 100% to do with them and their own struggles and nothing to do with the person they break up with. Usually in break-ups, responsibility can fall on both partners and nobody is perfect. We are all humans figuring out relationships and how to be good partners and honor what is good and healthy for us. Sometimes people break up from neutral places as well. Nonetheless, my hope is to empower those that have been dumped and the "dumpees" to get perspective on their relationship break-ups and realize that it's not always what it seems.

On today's episode of #coffeewithatherapist, we talk all about how people-pleasing and people-pleasers are not actually being giving (as they think they are) but are pleasing and giving from a place of self-need. Many people-pleasers try to please others because they are needing validation, kudos, or reassurance themselves and not from a "my cup runneth over" place. Today we talk about shifting that mindset and help people-pleasers understand what they need to do to change their "selfish" behaviors and learn to give themselves validation so they can truly be kind and giving to others from a genuine place. As a recovering people-pleaser, I have A LOT of empathy for the people-pleasing struggle. Working on these issues with a therapist that understands "sense of self" and trauma-work is highly recommended as many of us learn to people-please as a response to the role we played in our families or survival in some sort of social situation from the past (or simply by not learning how to do it differently). Happy Friday y'all - enjoy your weekend.

Happy Thursday! Today we are talking about how to make big decisions. Often people make decisions from a place of fear, "acting AGAINST" someone or something, or from survival mode. Today's episode talks about asking ourselves questions and giving ourselves the time needed to ensure we are making big decisions from a place that is authentic to us. Additionally, I'll talk about giving ourselves grace for making decisions from a place of survival mode (because we've all been there).

Happy Monday! Working off of my previous video on the features and traits of trustworthiness, in today's live we explore the self-work we must do to learn how to trust people again (both in our brains and our bodies). Often if we've been hurt in the past, our bodies or reactions will still respond to future triggers of "potential untrustworthiness" by going into anxiety or reactivity mode. The attribution bias is something that often needs to be healed in therapy or with exposure of new, healthy relational experiences.

Good morning! Today we talk about ways we can stay positive despite all of the negative many people are being unindated with during this time of quarantine and isolation. I cover 4 of the most effective (and research-based) tips on re-balancing into having a more positive mindset. Now I'm not one to fluff and pretend like things are all good, we need to hold space for the bad too. But often, people get into an overly negative and pessimistic mindset during times like these, and my hope is for us to find more balance and get back into a "more accurate" and true mindset than being overly stuck in the negative.

Good morning y'all! Today I am doing a response video to a question about my feedback/thoughts on the MGTOW movement (men going their own way). First, I wanted to be clear that I am no expert on these movements (MGTOW and WGTOW) and started my research on it yesterday. However, I did want to provide my feedback on what I understand about people who choose not to marry or be in committed relationships (counter to our culture's beliefs in happily ever after with a significant other). My main takeaway is that it is important for us to look at the WHY we make certain decisions for ourselves and the purpose/empowerment of those movements. I believe that people choosing to be single can be a healthy thing given the right intentions and if it's not from a place of avoidance or hurt. I believe that being single can come from a place of both self-love and loving others.

I'd love to hear feedback and questions on this, as I am still learning. Grateful for the request/question and hope I've provided some value to this topic!

Happy Wednesday! Today we are answering the question, "how do I trust people if I've been hurt by them?". Often times when we've been hurt by people time and time again, we inevitable start losing trust in them. We may even get to the point where we don't seek friendships or relationships at all because "why even bother?" or it feels too risky / painful. Many of us never learned what a trustworthy or emotionally safe person was from our family system or didn't have healthy mentors to fully understand this as well. No mentor is perfect and it's important that we learn what trustworthiness is, and build trust within ourselves too. I talk about both of these components of trustworthiness and hope to encourage you that there are good people in the world, we just may need a different strategy for seeking them.

What do we do when our friend emotionally vents a lot and we don't have the emotional energy or bandwidth for it? In today's coffee with a therapist, I talk about how to respond to friend's venting and ways we can set boundaries and communicate in a compassionate way what our needs are as the "receivers of venting". If we don't set these boundaries, we may end up feeling resentful and distancing ourselves from our friendships and relationships. Compassionate, assertive communication is key in these scenarios and in protecting your own emotional energy.

Happy Monday! Today's live episode of coffee with a therapist was in response to a question I got on Instagram, "What do you do if people think you are being selfish when you add self-care to your life?" First, I want to say that I did feel selfish at first when I began practicing consistent, good self-care. I was so used to giving to others (whether they asked for my help or not) that it felt really strange to give to myself and practice self-care. Here's how you can respond and what it means when someone doesn't LOVE your new self-care routine.

In today's episode, we talk to Dr. Holly Milligan, the leading Counterstrain specialist in Kansas and the only Counterstrain specialist in Wichita. She brings her years of experience and knowledge of Counterstrain to explaining the deeper body work that can be done to release things we store in the body as a result of trauma, stress, and body imbalances.

A description of Counterstrain (taken from the Jones Institute): "As a general overview, Counterstrain utilizes diagnostic tender points to identify painful, reflexively protected and contracted tissues. Reflex tissue contractions occur in the body’s deep fascia layers, skeletal muscle tissues and or smooth muscle structures in response to a variety of mechanical or chemical insults. Examples include trauma, surgery, postural strain, repetitive motion, infectious or viral conditions, even secondary to a long-term inflammatory diet. This form of reflex muscular dysfunction, once present, can contribute to a multitude of symptoms and conditions. Some examples include musculoskeletal conditions in all regions of the body, chronic edema, weakness, digestive dysfunction, neuropathies, endocrine dysfunction, migraine and non-migraine headaches, visual disturbances, tachycardia, CRPS, peripheral arterial disease, balance disorders, seizures, tinnitus, depression, impaired immune system function, even systemic conditions like fibromyalgia."

Admittedly, I really struggle with accepting “good enough” or being “okay” at things. For many different reasons (all stemming from various things I’m working through in my own therapeutic journey) I have noticed a desire in myself to work as hard as I can to be as good as I can be at every venture that I try without setting realistic boundaries, limits, or having much grace for myself in the process. The result? The overachiever-perfectionist mode or OPM leaves me feeling exhausted, depressed, and inadequate.

Knowing this tendency that I have for OPM, I have worked over the past 4-5 years more intentionally to slowly but surely become more okay with just being “okay” and saying “no” to myself on taking on too much all at once. As a licensed therapist who is also building a business, does CrossFit, and various entrepreneurial projects on the side — I really have to be cautious about the expectations and goals I set for myself and remember to be grateful for the progress I’ve made in the meantime.

One of the most helpful quotes that resonates in my mind when I begin going on an overachieving binge would be that,

“We will never fully arrive. If we think we have arrived, we are already far off course.”

These truths are so incredibly helpful for me because I have realized that this whole process of improving is a JOURNEY and we will never win at it. So, why not ENJOY that journey in the process?

It’s funny because most of my own “big-why’s” for setting certain goals is to become more of the person I think I want to be because I believe it will make me happier, more in touch with my healthier self, more at peace, and better able to serve others…. Ironically, when I get into my OPM which I believe will help me achieve said “inner peace”, all of that goes out of the window and I lose sight of my whole purpose and drift farther from happiness, peace, and being attuned to others.

For this reason, I have set lower expectations, and practice being grateful for the “good enough”. This year, I may not progress much in CrossFit or my entrepreneurial projects because my main focus is on my clients and graduation. If I am able to be more present with them and get my degree — I will feel good enough and grateful that I am still a part of CrossFit (because I love my community

8 Ways To Prevent Eating Disorders and Negative Body Image in Kids

Being the parent of a child with eating or body image struggles is incredibly difficult. I hear parents say things like, “Did I cause this?” and “We did everything right… I don’t know why they’re like this”. Often parents feel helpless or frustrated that their little one can’t see the amazing things in themselves that they as parents (and me as the clinician) can see. Additionally, parents have had a bad and misrepresented history of carrying full blame for their children’s struggles. However, instead of seeing parents as “the ones to blame”, I see parents as being their child’s biggest ally in healing and PREVENTING an eating disorder. PREVENTION is less costly and more effective than waiting for a child to show symptoms. Let’s talk about specific ways you can prevent eating disorders and body struggles with your kiddos:

Consider your own relationship to your body and food. Do you love your body? Are you obsessing over weight or struggling to find balance with food? Dr. Dan Siegel, a famous parenting author, is famous for saying, “We can only give to our children what we give to ourselves.” For this reason it is imperative that you work on your own relationship with food and your body. Work with a therapist, take a yoga class, and filter media that enforces the belief of “never good enough”.

Don’t overly focus on or talk about food, bodies, or weight. Don’t make comments about others body size (even if they are framed positively, i.e. “she’s so thin!”). Don’t make disparaging comments about your own body. Children learn from what we do and how we treat ourselves and others.

Don’t keep a scale at home. Scales can encourage an over-emphasis on weight and weight obsession

When your child makes major changes in their diet, ask them questions about WHY they are making these changes. Are they doing it “to be like other girls/boys in their class”? or are they doing it for other more positive/neutral reasons?

Educate your child on how the media distorts images and over-emphasizes appearance as equaling happiness. Use learning moments to discuss how people are “so much more” than what they look like. Because we absolutely are!

Help your child tune into their own body signals. Don’t make them finish their plate if they tell you they are full and let them eat more if they are still hungry. Don’t jump on the bandwagon of the “clean plate club”.

Don’t suggest that “losing weight” or “dieting” is a solution to your child’s anxiety, depression, or lack of motivation. Instead, work to have more discussions around these topics and seek professional help if they are feeling stuck in their depression or anxiety.

Seek an assessment if your child is beginning to make negative comments about their body, has made distinct changes in their diet (i.e. “going vegan”), has marked changes in their attitude around meal times, or is engaging in dieting or diet talk. It never hurts to assess and work on the negative attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs BEFORE it leads to something more serious. Sidenote: I’ve seen some teens for 3-4 sessions, working on prevention and increasing their self-esteem. ED treatment can be costly, and usually takes several months to several years.

Here’s to wishing you all a healthy, happy relationship to food and your own body and helping your kiddo do the same!
