The National Academic Integrity Network (NAIN) has now published their Framework for Academic Misconduct Investigation and Case Management.
This podcast contains an interview with Dr Yvonne Kavanagh and Aisling Reast, Co-Chairs of the NAIN Working Group, which developed and produced the framework after a process of extensive national consultation across the higher education sector in Ireland. The interview explores the inspiration for the development of this ‘cutting edge’ new resource and the extensive process of consultation, revision and feedback which enabled the production of the final version. The Chairs reflect on the challenges encountered in producing a resource which was developed by the sector for the sector. Yvonne and Aisling, along with the Working Group members, were core to the framework’s development with a clear vision of the intended impacts they hope it can achieve and they discuss and explain what this driving vision was and how they hope it will enable further positive developments across the sector in enabling institutions and staff to manage academic misconduct and, most importantly, to further safeguard and protect learners.

In this month’s podcast, Richard Kjellgren (University of Stirling) talks to Mairéad Boland, QQI, about the scoping study, Criminal Grades? Contract cheating and student exploitation in Higher Education, which he conducted alongside Dr Niall Hamilton-Smith (University of Stirling) and Professor Alistair Fraser (University of Glasgow).
The study was published by the Scottish Centre for Crime & Justice Research in June 2022 and was undertaken in order to consider student vulnerabilities relating to contract cheating and – more broadly – academic misconduct. In the podcast, Richard discusses what the research uncovered about different types of contract cheating provision and key messages for education providers.
Note: The study 'Criminal Grades? Contract cheating and student exploitation in Higher Education' categorises contract cheating services into three broad types based on the platforms on which they are provided: cheating organisations’ own websites (“essay mills”), small ads platforms such as Gumtree, and ‘outsourcing’ sites such as Fiverr. Any comments in the podcast with regard to Gumtree or Fiverr should not be construed as claims that these sites are essay mills; rather, Richard discusses in the podcast how Fiverr, Gumtree and similar sites can be misused by contract cheating organisations as platforms for providing their services to learners. Fiverr clearly states in its Terms of Service that users of its site are prohibited from “offering to prepare academic works on behalf of Buyers”. In its Terms & Conditions of Use, Gumtree stipulates that users of the site are prohibited from “post[ing] Content in breach any applicable laws or regulation”. QQI encourages listeners to report any misuse of the Fiverr and/or Gumtree platforms (and other similar platforms) directly to the relevant platform.

For the third in this podcast series from the National Academic Integrity Network, Dr Yvonne Kavanagh (South East Technological University / NAIN Steering Committee member) interviews Associate Professor Sarah Elaine Eaton (Werkland School of Education, University of Calgary).
In this episode, Professor Eaton talks about how she became so involved in, and passionate about, the field of academic integrity, the importance of identifying and tackling ‘the wicked questions’ collaboratively, and the necessity for higher education leaders to regard academic integrity as an area which ‘needs to be embedded in budgets at operational level as well as in research projects’ , i.e. long term, sustainable investment. She also makes the case that academic integrity is not only about student conduct, but also about ethics and promoting ethical behaviour on the part of all stakeholders. She further exemplifies this point by referring to restorative justice approaches which may provide a redemptive route for students to repair the harm they have done through engagement in academic misconduct, to enable them to both learn from the experience and to stay in the learning community, with the hope that they will then act with intentionality in a different way going forward.
We hope this conversation inspires further conversations and innovative thinking!
