This is the podcast devoted to supporting you leading at the highest levels of effectiveness with the greatest levels of fun and asking the powerful questions to wake you up in your leadership and your life.
In this episode I officially bring the Super Fantastic Leadership Show to a close and make an announcement about the new podcast I will be starting in 2024.
This week we are talking about resilience and what to avoid doing if you want to be even more resilient. That's right, even more resilient. Human beings by in-large are given much resilience but, some of the things we may be choosing to do can erode this naturally occurring strength to "bounce back" in ways that we may not recognize.
First of all, watch out for complaining, blaming and criticizing others and also yourself! This is numero uno for you for sure. While it may feel slights enlivening due to the hits of adrenaline that we get when we are feeling righteous about what others should or shouldn't be doing, be aware that this ultimately doesn't leave us feeling empowered. Mostly this doesn't work to build our resilience because this habit isn't actionable. We are complaining but, we aren't owning our own agency and power to change anything.
Secondly, feeling into a future based on horrible outcomes also doesn't build our resilience. Again, we return to being able to take action on that which we can do right now is best. Those things that are within our locus of control are incredibly helpful for us to use our strengths and best virtues as well as, most likely, to help others. When times feel uncertain and we feel out of control and unable to impact our environment, finding those places where we can take mindful action is incredibly resilient building.
Thirdly, not giving attention to your naturally occurring strengths and the best virtues you are bringing to every day, also isn't helpful. If we can see our strengths and how we are using them day-to-day can be very helpful. What parts of your better nature has really shown up during this time? And during any time in which you've been challenged?
We're including some great links for you too in this week's show:If you want to assess your own mental toughness, check out this article and the questions here. And if you'd like a good laugh, you can watch my friend Jessica and her quarantine roommate with their 5 Second Phone Calls.
Join us on the Super Fantastic Leadership Show app too. We would love to see you there. You can get it right on itunes if you don't have it already. There you will find all sorts of great bonus content. This week we are simply including a picture of McWilmes sheltered at home.

This week we discuss the many ways in which our lives may change due to the pandemic and also, the caution we might want to consider as we begin to get convinced that we should go back to business as usual.
Today's show was inspired by an article that Daphne read on Medium written by Julio Vincent Gambuto. In this article he warns us to be intentional about what we bring back into our lives. However, the article also points too many fingers at the world outside of ourselves for creating our lives the way they are. Daphne wrote a response article that addresses this point and we talk about it on the show today.
The truth is, we are always responsible for our lives and what we bring into them or not. For sure, this pandemic may provide us with some much needed levers but, as the title of this show suggests, it is no magic bullet for "fixing" the things we had issues with all along.
Marta and Daphne also talk about the levers they are pulling to learn new things. For Marta, she is learning to draw comics. For Daphne, she is focusing a lot on cooking really delicious food. You can find the recipe to the world's best grilled cheese sandwich that she made right here. Also, here is her favorite green smoothie recipe that she makes to get her mornings off to a great start.
Let us know what new things you're bringing into your world and how you are using this time to get leverage in your life. That's what it is all about!

This week we talk about what might be happening and what you can do if you've found yourself without gainful employment. The context of the pandemic has left many feeling more than anxious about what to do if they've found themselves without work. We have several actions for you!
We are including some links right here for you too!

Today we are going to be offering a lot of tips with how to work with the experiences of anxiety, depression, overwhelm and isolation.
First, we want to recognize the experience we are experiencing. So often we do attempt to rush to solutions to "get rid" of our experience or to force it to change in some way. We don't trust the process as it is happening.
We've also been told a lot of stories about our experiences too. The stories we've all been told begin with some form of "should" or "shouldn't". We shouldn't be sad, we should be happy and grateful, for example.
In times of uncertainty we can lose our very real need for agency. Agency is the experience we have when we feel as though we can influence or change a situation in a particular way. This gives us a sense of control, safety and security. When we feel uncertain it can be difficult for us to find the ways we are still in our power and control.
This is often what begins to bring up experiences of feeling fearful, overwhelmed, and all of the variations of emotional experiences.
Here are some tips that we give for these different experiences.
Anxiety: feels like reaching into the future: the 3 tips-meditation practice, do one thing at a time, do some 4 x 4 breathing.
Depression: feels like being in cement shoes and dull: 3 tips-gratitude practices, finding laughter (one of my favorite SNL sketches), physical activity
Overwhelm: feels like not knowing where to begin: the 3 tips-follow the steps in this 10' to presence video, watch out for all or nothing thinking, take an action.
Isolated: feels like being lonely and disconnected (from ourselves): the 3 tips-ask what do I need? what might others need too, ask for what you need, take action.
Here is a link to the RAIN meditation that we spoke about in the show too.

This week's show is based on one of my favorite articles and books by the same name; how will you measure your life by Clayton Christensen. I read the article so many years ago when it was published in Harvard Business Review and found this one question one of most profound, nagging and accelerating questions I've sat with ever since. It's the perfect time of year to see what answers may come to you as you ask it yourself. Join us this week as we explore the three questions also asked on the heels of this one.
Have you heard of "life hacks"? Yeah, we have too and this week we ask an important question; why are you hacking your life? Don't get us wrong, we love efficiency and assume that some things are all about ways to be more efficient but, to what end? The one thing none of these hacks make salient is what you're going to be 'doing' once you're done rushing through your emails or laundry? We propose a better approach to the stuff of life which is to instead, be fully present to everything we are doing. Of course, if you're spending a lot of time doing things out of obligation, there is no hack that will help you. You'll never have enough time to do the things you don't want to do. Join us this week to hear why we really avoid 'hacking our life'.
This show is our time to talk about one of my favorite aspects of ending the year, completion! I spend the last two weeks of the year giving my full effort to completing anything that's been "hanging around" and needing to be brought full circle. For example, those pictures that have been needing to be framed, or that file that's been overflowing for the past month. Yes, it's the little things that matter! Now, what's really important to know is that the more we practice living in the way, instead of just waiting for the end of the year, the better off we are. This drives us to be more mindful about the things we say yes to and also, to keep ourselves organized in a way that allows us to get things done when we said that we would. That always feels great! So, listen in this week as we talk about what it's like to have the intentionality to live in completion!
In this week's episode we are going to talk about one of the most important and critical resources that we have in our life and our leadership, our attention. One reality of our existence that is more overlooked than most is that we actually have the ability to train our attention and to also, choose where to direct it. We will discuss the ways to do that and as importantly, the impact that this can have on our lives as well as in our role at work. Making intentional choices about what we are giving our attention to could be one of the greatest skills we ever learn. Join us on the show this week!
In this week's episode we are going to talk about making mistakes and the paralyzing moments that can ensue once we realized we've made one. It sounds simple enough that a mistake is simply a mistake but notice how much time and energy we spend wanting to avoid them?! One of the first things we have to recognize when we're navigating this question is first and foremost how we define the word "mistake". Join us this week as we explore this big question and also, the many ways we can be kind to ourselves and others in the face of mis-taking what we thought we understood all along.
This week's show explores a question that can be a real game changer in our day-to-day lives. It has everything to do with the way we relate to thoughts and more so, the stream of thoughts that can create a full-blown story in our minds. And, if you've been paying attention, you can begin to see that these stories are often filled with the doom and gloom version that lead us into a great more deal of stress and anxiety than reality could ever create itself. But, what do we do? Well, listen in this week as we explore the questions and more so, how we can learn to pay particular attention in a way that can bring us greater peace, calm and joy in our leadership and our lives. And who wouldn't want more of that?!
This week Marta and Daphne are at it again with another great question: when was the last time you failed? While this doesn't seem like a very savory topic to discuss, the question is loaded with a lot of learning. After all, isn't that what "failing" is all about? Can we learn if we don't fail? And, given that, is there really such a thing as failure to begin with? If we haven't ever failed, does that mean we really haven't been taking risks? It seems that this question could almost leave us with even more questions and fewer answer. This week's show will get to the heart of the matter though as it usually does and we hope you'll learn as you hear about our own trials and tribulations and maybe, even some of our failures. Join us this week!
We explore one of Daphne’s favorite questions to ask her clients...and also to reflect on herself. When we feel like we’re just surviving, life isn’t very fun. But, how do we ensure we can keep thriving at work and at life when we’re so busy and have so many things we’re responsible for? Well, not too worry because Daphne and Marta have some answers! And more great news! Daphne’s new book, Waking Up A Leader-Five Relationships of Success is now available for pre-order. You can go to the link right here! Just go to the link here!
This week's episode was born from the stuff of life; in particular Daphne's life when her significant other required an unplanned surgery. Of course, that was one of those big moments when life decided all other things we would be paused to allow her to take care of a person in need. But there are those other times in life when we need to hit pause too and hopefully, we know how to do that skillfully so that we can renew ourselves and handle things in a way that can feel most friendly to us and others. In this week's show we will talk about the art of renegotation and how to hit pause at any moment. Join us!
This week we are talking about how we make changes in our leadership and our lives. Have you noticed that most of the time we make changes from a place of finding our current reality totally unbearable? And we only focus on that which we don't already have or what we think we need? Yes, this is an age-old pattern for most of us. But, what would happen if we came to change from first being grateful for what we already have and for who we already are? What might happen with the way we navigate the desire for change? Listen in this week and find out what's possible and how it can make change that much easier to create.
This week we sit in another relevant question for all of you great leaders at work and in life: How do you do goals? This is a question that is all about the many ways we can relate to goals. Sometimes we have a very healthy relationship to them but more times than not, not so healthy. If you've felt like you were sacrificing life and limb to achieve a goal or completely avoiding setting any at all, then you may have a certain relationship to explore. Almost all successful leaders I know have had to make the decision about how they would relate to their never-ending goal list. Listen in this week as we ask this powerful question and explore our own relationship to goals too!
This week's show begins a new era for the podcast. We are stepping into the world of questions as a new energy and way of being on the show. You'll notice some changes but what remains the same is our commitment to making your leadership, and your life, all that it can be. This week we ask an important question about delegating: What is your team learning when you delegate to them? This is a question that can be looked at in a few different ways. Like it or not, your team is always learning something. And, there's an even bigger question that we explore: what are you learning when you delegate? Join us as we explore the questions and give you the practical tips to wake up your leadership.
Ah, career development. Nothing could sound more dry and uninspiring. It can feel like something we "have to do" and remind us of the next series of meetings we'll be pulled into that opens with the cheesiest of cheesy ice breakers. Well, this weeks show is going to change all of that. It turns out that developing ourselves is the key to having a long and and enjoyable career and it's what keeps us going when the going gets tough at time with our work. Taking the time to learn and grow is also the big differentiator between us simply having a job and doing things that we love to do (aka a career or even a calling). The one thing we really explore in this week's show is how all of that development doesn't necessarily happen in the way that we think either. Believe it or not, taking an archery class or learning to paint can help you in ways often not considered. Listen in this week and also, develop yourself at the same time.
It's an age-old issue that many of us can complain about all too often; we're all really busy. While we don't ascribe to falling into that mantra too often, there certainly can be those moments when we do actually have a lot of things to get completed, all of which can feel like they have the same impending due date. It's in those moments that we can really start to freak out and feel overwhelmed. What do we do when we actually do have a lot of things to get done? Well this week we give you some really great tips to manage all of the crazy. There are 5 tips to be exact. Yes, one of the first of which is to manage our mindset. Stop telling yourself you're too busy and you'll never get it all done is a great place to start. And, there's more. So be sure to listen in this week as we give you the goods and get you on the road to productivity that's easy.
This week we are asking you to answer a question: How productive do you feel when you're sleep deprived, hungover and totally exhausted? Probably not very productive at all. In this week's show, we have a lively conversation about the many ways that we are energy machines that require the restoration of our fuel every day. Not just once a year on vacation. We also make the point that trying to only manage our time isn't really the best use of our energy. Keeping ourselves feeling fresh and refreshed makes all the difference, especially when life brings it's challenges that require our resilience. Join us this week for your own renewal!
This week we talk all about saying "thank you" and expressing gratitude. It's such a simple concept yet, it is also filled with nuances. What stops us from being grateful and expressing gratitude? Could there be a time when saying thank you might not be the best idea? In this week's show we answer all of your questions and more and give you some really great actionable tips about the ways you can make gratitude a real part of how you do your work and your life, without all of the pitfalls and magical thinking that we assume it may bring. Join us!
This week we talk about why we need to keep ourselves as present as we can even when we are working to achieve a goal sometime in the future. As it turns out, we are only ever here right now. What's really true is that how present we are right now drives the quality of the actions we take. This has a great deal to do with how we achieve our goals or not. Another key part of this week's conversation is really more about who we are becoming on our path to achieving our goals and not just achieving them in and of themselves. We even talk about Uncle Rico from Napolean Dynamite and his never ending quest to go back to '82. Join us this week for another exciting episode with practical tips and tricks that will take your leadership and your life to the next level.
This week we are exploring an age-old question: what do you REALLY want? It’s an oldie but a goodie and, even though it’s been beaten to death by almost every coach, it’s still something that is absolutely worth asking and knowing. What we really want points to our intentions and motivations. As a result, you can, instead of asking what you really want, ask: What are my intentions and motivations as I navigate this situation, relationship or circumstance?
We’ll talk about what this all looks like, share some examples, discuss things that can hold us back from going after what we want, and provide some action steps for you!
Also, here’s an AWESOME response to the naysayers in your life. If you want something and a naysayer says “oooo yeah… do you think that’s really going to work?” You can respond with “I dunno… have you done that before?”

If you’ve been complaining about being too busy or your team not being able to handle things, today’s episode is for you! We were going to call this episode “an open door policy doesn’t mean open all the time,” but we feel like giving you 4 specific ways to maximize your time and your team makes more sense!
Leaders have so many things going on, so much to do, and it’s easy to be interrupted throughout the day. It’s worth acknowledging that there a multitude of ways that we create this excessive “busyness.” So we have 4 very effective ways that you can reduce some of this excessive busyness and get the work done that needs to get done.

Good ‘ole anxiety…
It’s not fun. Today, we are talking about all of the ways we can make ourselves anxious and then what to do about it so we can GET RID OF ANXIETY!!
There’s a fantastic blog by The Minimalists (link below) that talks about how to make yourself anxious! While intended to be funny, it also is incredibly true. It’s absolutely worth a read. Anxiety is a common thing for most people but, of course, not healthy for us in any way.
We are going into detail about what anxiety is, how we create it (including some of the subtle things that may even elude us), and then what to do to get rid of anxiety and how to go about doing it. If you struggle with any level of anxiety, this is a MUST listen!
Oh, and practice breathing...
Now, enjoy the moment!

Communication is absolutely essential. When we think about communicating with others, how quick are we to think about making sure others understand us versus us understanding them? This is not an easy question, is it? But, let’s be honest: communication is complicated. There are a number of factors that play into the full spectrum of communication between people.
Today, we’ll discuss those nuances of communication and how you can better understand how best to communicate, not only with one person, but also to a group of people as a leader. We’ll share our tips and suggestions for how you can create more effective and even more accurate communication.

This week is all about getting ourselves to see how we can stop working so hard. We start off by wondering how we came up with the phrase “hard work” in the first place. Why does work need to be hard? We don’t know either. Of course, if you’re doing anything you don’t want to do it will feel hard. And this is sometimes what is at the root of the issue. We also explore how to make the shift around this pattern we can fall into with our teams and telling them how hard they are working. If you want work to be hard, just keep telling yourself and the people you work with that it is. Listen in this week and stop working so hard.
In this week's show we are talking about the "C" word-Change. And we're revealing the big secret about managing change. You should know going in that we don't really manage it though. It's happening whether we like it or not. That's actually the first step in experiencing less difficulty with change. Change is reality. Nothing is permanent and that's what this show is all about. How do we relate to the reality of impermanence. And, if you think you're really all good with change, you may really want to listen in. It's likely that you're only good with it when you're the one creating it. Join us this week!
In this week’s show, Daphne really gets on her soapbox with Marta as she talks about one of her least favorite questions asked to teams by their managers. As with most things, the question is well-intended and meant to be supportive. However, what usually happens in the response sounds a lot like crickets. Listen is this week! Oh, and let us know if there are any ways that we can support you too!
This week we answer a question that everyone wonders about: does mindfulness at work actually work? Well, we first need to understand a few things. First, what do we mean by mindfulness? Are we just talking about meditation? The answer to that question is no. And then, does mindfulness work for every person and if so, what are we using it for? We dive into the nuances of mindfulness and meditation and also, what makes these approaches useful for people to manage stress and maybe enjoy themselves a little bit more. The good news is that it can work and often does for many people. That includes it even being able to work, at work. Listen in this week and let us know what you think!
If you've ever wondered how to really get your stress under control, this week's show is for you. We're back this week to support your leadership with some of the key tips and tricks to working with this thing we call "stress". Here's one tip we'll give you right off the bat; not all stress is bad and what really matters isn't the stress itself. It's how we relate to it that really makes the difference. A great deal of how we experience life itself comes from our own inner world and that's a great place to start. Nevertheless, we talk about our outer world too and how as leaders, we really need to learn to stop putting too much on our plate from the buffet of life. This is all about owning the ways we unconsciously create more stress for ourselves. Listen in this week and enjoy getting more peace and calm in your life!
Also, if you haven't subscribed to the DS Leadership weekly, you can do that at www.daphne-scott.com. You'll be glad that you did!
In this week's show, Daphne and Marta discuss the common challenges with meditation and how to overcome them. More and more people are coming to the practice of meditation and mindfulness as a way to manage stress and calm the mind that seems to chatter at us reliably. However, as many people also discover, there can be some real challenges that get in the way of doing this as a regular routine, one of the biggest being that people can feel they are too busy to meditate consistently. This is of course the most ironic part of establishing a practice. Listen in this week and learn more about how to overcome the challenges you might be encountering.

On the show this week, we’re asking a pretty powerful question: Are you a joyful leader? It’s different than asking if you’re a happy one. We discuss the difference between happiness and joy and also, what we can do to ultimately tap into that innate part of ourselves even when our work and our life attempt to throw us off track. We also tell you about a survey that you can do to explore your current level of choosing joy that you can find right here.
LINKS:
This week we talk about every leader’s greatest fear: making a bad hire. If you’ve had the pleasure of having to be the one to make the final decision about who to bring onto the bus, you know how antagonizing the hiring process can be. Once that person gets on the bus, getting them off is a whole other issue.
This week, we offer some solid solutions to get you on the right track. We also dispel some of the myths about hiring and interviewing to hopefully make your understanding of the process a bit more clear. The good news is that you can do several things to make it more likely that you’re choosing a good fit for your team and your company. Join us this week to find out how!

This week’s show is part 2 of our episodes on choosing time over money! This week is all about the “how.” Now, we don’t want to mislead you, and we aren’t necessarily advocating for you to not make money in your life. We actually think that’s great too. However, if you listened to last week’s show, you know that we’ve been pretty blinded to how we can make sense of these two constructs in our modern life. The old adage: “time being money” just might not apply in the way we are used to and there is plenty of science to back that up when it comes to our joy and peace in our leadership and life.
LINKS:
This week’s show is part 1 in a two-part topic we are exploring about money and time. It might be possible that Ben Franklin’s old quote “time is money” may not be as relevant as it once was. It’s probably more appropriate to say that “money is time”. You may be interested to know that, as Americans, we actually have more leisure time than ever and yet, no one seems to be feeling that way. Listen in as we start our journey on the intersection between time and money.
LINKS:
The topic on the show this week is a difficult one for almost every manager and leader. Making the decision to let someone go is never an easy one, but on today’s show, we explore the real considerations that can make it much easier. We also discuss the “how to” of firing someone from a much more mindful place.
LINKS:
Oh those moments when life doesn’t go as we had planned! And so it is with a life in business and leadership too. Daphne and Marta serve it up this week and give us the nitty gritty about how to relate to these moments in a way that can give us access to our best wisdom in our leadership and beyond. A big part of working with these moments is recognizing our patterns of fear and how the mind loves to ruminate. Think of rumination as a fancy way of explaining that phenomenon of thinking things to death. This week’s show will surely give you the tips and tricks to become a master at handling the tough stuff in your day-to-day work.
LINKS:
This week’s show is about one of those topics that we don’t like to talk about too much... except to our closest friends at happy hour... How to work with people we don’t like that much. While it would be great if everything was rainbows and unicorns, sometimes we need to learn to get along with others and get the work done. Nevertheless, we can also learn a lot about ourselves as well, as we consider exactly what it is that bothers us so much about another person. It’s an age-old question and one to consider exploring, especially as you listen to the show this week.
LINKS:
Who doesn’t love those great moments of judging? We all do until we’re the one being judged. Join us this week as we talk about how to work with it in our own minds and how judgement keeps us from forming the connections we want with our teams and the people we lead. And although we need to be able to be discerning, this isn’t the same as judging. We know, you were thinking that weren’t you? Join the conversation in this week’s show!
LINKS:
This week we explore the whole issue with goals. We know that goals are important. We all need them and interestingly, we all have them. But the issues can arise for several reasons, all of which we discuss in the podcast. We’ll share, with you, how you can overcome these issues and the three pitfalls of goals. Join us for more amazing hijinks this week!
LINKS:
This week Daphne and Marta talk about one of Daphne’s favorite soapbox topics; the ‘soft skills’ of leadership. To make a distinction between transformational and transactional skills, leaders through the ages keep calling the transformational skills “soft”, which essentially makes them sound less relevant than the other necessary business and leadership skills. If you really want an organization that does more than just fulfill the requirements of the bottom-line, sourcing empathy and being able to listen are two of the many skills leaders must have.
LINKS:
Inspiration.
We hear so much about the idea of “engaged” employees, but wouldn’t you rather have a group of inspired employees? Employee engagement is the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals. But what does that exactly mean? Don’t forget, the employee (a person) also has their own goals. So how do we move from engaged to inspired?
We are discussing that and talking all about how to inspire your team. We’ll share how to connect any person’s role to the bigger purpose of what your company is trying to do. For most companies, that is trying to help people solve a particular problem, in a particular way. We’ll talk about addressing your employees’ needs (Maslow’s Hierarchy for example), how to connect them with your company’s mission and greater purpose, and how to cultivate inspiration within your company.
LINKS:
We believe that the most challenging part for any leader is allowing mistakes to be made. Most company cultures don’t usually encourage, or even allow, mistakes to be made. But the reality is that if you want people to grow, you’ve got to let them learn. Of course, if you want them to learn, you’ve got to let them experiment, and that involves making mistakes.
Today, we’re going to talk about mistakes, why allowing mistakes is a really good thing for you and your company, and how to allow those mistakes in a way that will help you and your people. We’ll also discuss a few other things involving how to respond to mistakes and encouraging employees to be bold in their decisions, even if it involves making a mistake, so they can continue to learn and grow and be and do better.
LINKS:
We’re talking about procrastination this week. We’ve all done it. We know what procrastination is like and we, many times, tend to beat ourselves up about it. We also tend to experience worry, anxiety, and distress over our procrastination.
Here’s the thing, however: the act of procrastinating isn’t the core issue. We’ll discuss why this is the case and what is, in fact, the main reason we procrastinate. Of course, we’ll also discuss what to do about it. We’ll give you some strategies today in order to give you freedom and help you to keep moving forward!
LINKS:
Think about all of the great meetings you’ve had. The ideas jumping all over. The wonderful visions, plans, and projects… that never happened or materialized. Also, remember that moment when you leave a meeting extremely excited, only to have another meeting the next quarter and realize nothing that was talked about ever came to be!
This week, we are talking about HOW to implement your team’s great ideas. Specifically, what to do once you and your team has made a decision. We’ll discuss the different types of “buy-in” based on who makes the decisions. We’ll talk about what success looks like and why it’s so essential for you to define success. Finally, we’ll share some steps for you to take to be able to implement these ideas in a way that will empower your team and actually get your creative ideas off the ground!
LINKS:
Welcome to 2019! Since this is going to be an absolutely amazing year, we thought: what better topic to discuss than destroying the creativity of your team! Happy New Year!!!
We’re all asked to be creative in our workplaces and in our life. Creativity is also mandatory for us, but we tend to sabotage our creativity by holding on to the old or even refusing to believe something new, for example. So many times and in so many examples, creativity is stifled. But there’s a way to avoid destroying the creativity and foster, not only new ideas, but a healthy working environment.
We’ll discuss how you can foster greater collaboration and creativity in your team on today’s episode! We have some great examples to encourage you and we will discuss some steps to avoid destroying that team creativity.
Remember… anything is possible.

We’ve come to the end of the year! We’ve been talking about goals and patience. Now we’re talking about renewal. For some of us, the holidays is a time of renewal and rest. For others, the holidays can be a chaotic time or even bring negativity and stress. We want to ensure that you take time for rest and renewal. It’s easy to allow our adrenaline to “guide” our lives and “give” us the “energy” we use to survive. But let’s face it… adrenaline is not good for us long-term. We NEED that rest and that renewal to live on natural and healthy energy.
Today, we’re going to discuss recovery, renewing our energy, and what makes you come alive. We’ll also share HOW to renew and how not to be misled by false renewal. We’d love to hear any additional ways that you are able to renew! Share them on Facebook or Twitter (links below)!
Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR and we will talk to you in 2019!!!

This week’s episode is all about patience and why it is so important for us. Patience is the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering, without getting angry or upset. However, we’re not saying that patience is better than impatience. We are talking about the suffering that gets born from our craving taking over.
We’ll talk about what patience and impatience actually looks like and how to cultivate patience (which is the really important part). There are two very important questions you can ask yourself every day: who did I help today and what did I learn from this situation? We’ll tell you how this will affect you in this week’s episode!
We will see you next week to discuss how to renew. It’s such a perfect way to wrap up 2018! Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

It’s hard to look at a mountain and keep worrying about how you haven’t clipped your nails…
As funny as that statement is, there’s a huge truth here… It is so easy to get wrapped up in the list of have-to-do’s. There are always SO many things to complete! This can, in effect, cause stress and anxiety. It’s also very likely that this stressful list of things to complete will smother you and your creativity.
However, getting complete on many things in our life is a key part of being able to move forward as well! It’s about clearing out the energetic drag. This week, we will discuss how to get to completion in the world of things and then we’ll talk about how to get to completion in the world of our emotional lives and relationships.
We also have 2 resources for you (below in the links) to help you to to be complete in the world of things and the world of relationships!

This is definitely Daphne’s favorite time of year! She also LOVES setting and achieving goals! It wasn’t always that way, however, and we also understand that not everyone loves or is good at goal-setting. This kind of goal-setting can bring massive immediate unbearable pain… but it can ALSO bring its opposite: pleasure!
A goal is simply something that doesn’t exist now that you want to bring into existence. On this week’s episode, we will talk about what goals truly are, why they are SO important, and how you can either start setting goals or continue to set even better goals in a very successful way. We want to help you to achieve the results you want!
You’ll also hear a little about sharing sweaty goals…

This week, on The Super Fantastic Leadership Show, we’re discussing conflicts at work between individuals, and also groups of people, and how to resolve them.
Interestingly, most of us are stressed at work, not because of our task list, but because of the interpersonal relationships we deal with every day. We all know what conflict does to us personally. Consider how much conflict distracts us from productivity and creates a huge cost to resolve the conflict.
However, fear not!
As always, we have answers!! We will discuss these conflicts: what they look like and why they happen. We’ll also share solutions and tips on how to actually connect with other people in a healthy and effective way.
Here are some steps to resolve conflict and create better communication:

Happy Thanksgiving!! We hope you’ve had an amazing Thanksgiving holiday and are enjoying your Friday and upcoming weekend!
Since this is Thanksgiving week, we wanted to talk about gratitude, rest and renewal, and finding refuge against the “cult of money.” It is, after all, Black Friday today. We’ll discuss, in more detail, what we mean by the “cult of money” in the episode.
While this isn’t necessarily a new topic, it’s still surprising how easy it is to get swept away with a world that rewards ambition and materialism over being sane. We find ourselves pursuing things that aren’t essential, stressing ourselves out to chase after something that really isn’t that important in the long run, and forgetting to take that down time to rest, play, and renew.
As always, we have some great discussion and great solutions for you as we celebrate this thankful holiday and thankful week!

We’re going to continue our discussion about change. On episode 224, we shared 3 Steps To Communicate Change To Your Team. We felt there was more to talk about on this topic. Specifically, what NOT to do, and how to communicate this to people to avoid them freaking out and still be in integrity.
We’ll discuss a little more about what change is, including some fantastic quotes! We’ll also talk about how to manage change so we don’t get stuck in fear of the unknown. Finally, we’ll get into a huge topic for companies: layoffs. Fear not! Because, as always, we’ll share action points and solutions.

Developing others is the most important activity for any leader that has a team of people.
Why is this so important?
Simply put: if you want to experience less overwhelm and grow your business, you need to develop your team. It’s easy for us to think we can and should do everything ourselves, but we will, inevitably, bottleneck our business and our potential.
Today, we’re going to discuss the importance of developing your team, and then show you how to teach your team and delegate to your team. In addition to learning how to teach, we’ll also teach you how to learn, and how to understand your leadership and teaching style.
LINKS:
Change is not always an easy thing to deal with. Especially when it comes out of nowhere and is communicated in a way that isn’t… well… the most helpful. Change can cause fear, lack of trust, chaos, and so many other negative feelings and responses.
In this week’s episode, we’ll give you 3 steps to help you communicate change to your team in a way that will provide greater leadership and, even, better living (for all parties involved). These 3 steps include: knowing your why, being methodical, and giving appreciation and recognition. Of course, we’ll explain these in detail and give you some helpful examples!
Share your thoughts! Marta would like to hear your beautiful voices, so please send in voicemails/voice messages and tell us your experiences with change and leading change!

Fear.
Fear is not something we ever enjoy experiencing. Yet, it’s something we have to deal with.
Today, we’re talking about fear: how to recognize it, be with it, and work with it, rather than trying to force it to go away. We’ll define and discuss what fear actually looks like, how to manage our emotions rather than them controlling us, how to respond to fear, and, as stated, how to deal with it in a very healthy way.
Side note: I (Brian, the Producer) have an additional thought on fear. I believe there are 2 main types of fear: Healthy fear and disordered fear. Healthy fears (being scared of petting a scorpion or fear of heights from jumping off a cliff) can serve to keep us and others safe. Those are good fears to embrace. Disordered fears are those that don’t serve us or others in any way. They hold us back and paralyze us. I believe it’s a really good idea to also distinguish between the type of fear you’re feeling to understand how to deal with that fear. Just a side comment to this great discussion! :)
We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on fear if you’re willing to share!!

If you want to be successful as a leader, and even in life, understanding relationships and how to relate is crucial.
Dr. Daphne Scott did a talk at the Free the Dream Conference, hosted by Cliff Ravenscraft. We are sharing that talk with you on today’s episode! Daphne shares her career story and journey to illustrate what she shared at the conference. She discusses 5 essential relationships that we should be paying attention to in order to be successful as leaders.
Daphne also has 4 questions for you. Answer them the best you can and see how that changes things for you. Feel free to share the answers with us, as we always love to hear where you’re at! Then ask yourself: How are you relating? From threat and fear or from trust and willingness?

Perhaps you have aspirations of being in a management role someday. There are some important things you might consider if this is the case. One, in particular, is helping out your current boss! Granted, the traditional advice is to be more of a leader if you want to be a leader. Be noticed and get your boss’s attention.
However… better advice is to be an exceptional FOLLOWER.
We will explain what this truly means and why this advice is better than the traditional advice.

Gossip.
It’s fun, isn’t it?
Wait! No it’s not! At least, it shouldn’t be...
Today’s episode is all about gossip in the workplace and why you should avoid it at all costs.
Let’s be honest: gossip is easy to do and very easy to get sucked into. But you may be surprised to know what the true definition of gossip really is. Sometimes, what we’re saying may not even really be gossip. So we’ll clarify that and what we’re talking about when it comes to intentional gossip.
We’ll also discuss what gossip does to you (the person gossipping) and how it will affect you negatively. Of course, we’ll also talk about what gossip does to the workplace and the culture of the workplace. Finally, we’ll discuss what you can do to avoid gossip and gossiping and how to bring yourself and the workplace back into equilibrium.

Are you trying to find the “magic bullet” to your problem or question?
Maybe you’ve seen others do that or try to always explain “how it is.”
This week’s episode is all about trusting your OWN experience. This topic is powerful and VERY important as it absolutely affects all of us, whether we want to admit it or not.
We’ll explain what all of this really means, how to identify it, and how to be able to trust your own experience in making decisions, moving forward boldly, and seeing greater success. Remember to trust your “head,” your “heart,” and your “gut.” We’ll explain how in the show!

It’s time for part 2 of power and leadership and why you may, possibly, have brain damage! Last week, we discussed the power of power to corrupt us. We talked about the Hubris syndrome and how many Presidents and other great leaders tend to show some or all of these traits. We looked at the overall information about what power does to us.
This week, our discussion revolves around how people like this get into their positions of power in the first place and what we can do if we’re working with one of them. Or, actually, maybe we ARE one of these people…
But fear not! We will have tips and help for you in this episode! It’s a very fascinating discussion!!

Why does it seem like jerks get ahead and get promoted?
Do you ever notice that in and around your life?
This week, we’re going to talk about the power of power to corrupt us. We’ll tie that into the Hubris Syndrome and share quite a bit of science to back all of this up. This week will be part 1 of a 2-part series on this topic.
We’ll share some studies that have been conducted on people in power, even Presidents, for a certain period of time and the effect that it has on the brain. Our goal is to share with you the details, science, and background to what power truly does to someone, but then also hopefully give you some tips on what to do to prevent this from happening to you. Part 2 coming next week!!

Today, we’re talking about the spiritual side of leading. The benevolent leader. There are several ways to describe the spiritual side of leadership: servant leadership, authentic leadership, and values-based leadership to name a few. These are all means to support leaders to recognize their souls and the souls of others. Essentially, do you care about yourself and those you lead?
But what happens when we neglect our souls?
We will address that question as well as more about what the spiritual side of leadership actually looks like and why it impacts us so much on this week’s episode. We’ll also discuss, of course, what to do and how you, as a leader, can create the rallying energy around creating something great and transforming beyond mere survival.

One of our favorite things to do is watch people try to multitask. Especially at meetings. You’ve already heard it here (and from the data we present) that it’s impossible to multitask. It’s actually, instead, called task-switching, which is a HUGE cognitive cost. That leads to lack of efficiency and effective results.
But here’s the question: are YOU, as a leader, multitasking in front of your team? At meetings?
What about working after hours or even on the weekends?
These are the two ways to burn out your teams:
This sends a message to your team that they should do the same. This, not only creates massive burnout, but sends signals of disrespect and lack of attention to what’s going on in front of us.
Don’t worry! We have some solutions for you today! These solutions will, not only, help your team to stay focused and energized for the long haul, but they will also help you.

Not everyone wants to know how they are perceived. It may not be easy to hear. On the other hand, it’s extremely beneficial! We all have ways that we want people to see us based on what we value. But we aren’t always aware of certain things about ourselves and we, therefore, need others to point those things out.
There was a great article on building your personal brand. Regardless of whether that’s something you’re interested in doing or not, there was a fascinating question brought up: how do others perceive you?
Whether you like it or not, this is the brand you are conveying to others.
Worry not because you CAN change how others perceive you. We have some super helpful and applicable tips for you, in this episode, as we navigate this realm of perception.

Happy August! We are BACK with a brand new episode!
We are going to spend the entire episode complaining about work! BEST. SHOW. EVER!
Ok, not really.
But let me ask you this… and be honest: how much time do you spend complaining at work?
I bet we’d all be surprised, if we were to seriously tally up every minute that we complained at work, how much time it took up. Not to mention the mental capacity. Complaining doesn’t just waste time, but it also really can affect our brain and neural pathways in an extremely detrimental and negative way. Then there’s the effect we have on others…
But here’s the thing. Complaining is usually caused by something that is actually causing us pain or something negative. It needs to be addressed and resolved rather than turned into gossip. We will discuss all of this and show you how to address and resolve your issues (and complaining) into something that’s positive and healthy!
This really WILL be the BEST. SHOW. EVER! :)

Positive relationships are necessary for effective teams and, even, a satisfying life. Building those relationships, in a positive manner, can be challenging. We don’t build those relationships by getting drunk with the team, having small talk, or even just being nice to them. They’re built on trust, respectful engagement, empowerment, and playing!
This episode is our final previously aired episode, episode 163, where Dr. Daphne Scott and Marta Wilmes discussed specific ways on how to build healthy relationships with your team. If you haven’t already listened to this episode, it’s a MUST! If you have, well listen again and enjoy the refresher on this essential topic!
We return next week with a BRAND NEW Super Fantastic Leadership Show episode!!

We have another previously aired episode for you this week!! As a reminder, for the rest of July, we are taking a look back at some of the most powerful episodes here on The Super Fantastic Leadership Show Podcast!
This week, we’re looking back at episode 107: Dr. Daphne Scott and Dr. Katie Hendricks discussed the wonderful and fun topic of receiving feedback. This is absolutely not an easy thing to do and so we want to help navigate you through a very helpful and healthy process to be able to receive feedback, use that feedback to better yourself, and even desire to ask for more feedback!
We have 5 steps and questions you can use to master the art of receiving feedback!

We have a previously aired episode for you this week! For the rest of July, we are taking a look back at some of the most powerful episodes here on The Super Fantastic Leadership Show Podcast!
We’re going all the way back to episode 1: Dr. Daphne Scott and Dr. Katie Hendricks explored the concept of context and why it is more important that content. In our leadership roles, we become very focused on content and what we’re supposed to say and do, however, we very rarely consider the context in which our work is being done.
For example, are we feeling closed and defensive, or experiencing more of an interest in looking good in front of our peers? We explore this entire concept to support leaders in becoming more present to the real driver of success with their teams: context.

This week, we are talking about flexible work schedules and why we have to STOP calling it that! Is it really a flexible work schedule? Do I really get to work whenever, however? If I don’t feel like working on Monday, is that cool? Wait! My hours are cut?!? I’m not going to make enough money this week!
We will discuss all of our reasons behind today’s topic, as well as the impact that this has on our businesses, employees, and even customers! It’s wise to clearly define what the work schedules truly mean in your workplace as work still needs to get done. Also, we do need to have empathy and compassion in our workforce, so we will discuss best practices for you!

Have you ever experienced and/or been a part of the infamous “us versus them” in a work environment? Oh, you’re from corporate? Well, those people in that department aren’t like us. Fill in the blank for your specific situation. The problem with this is that now we are creating division and a “plague” of separation that can destroy entire teams and organizations.
The “us versus them” attitude and culture NEVER works. So, this week, we are discussing all things “us versus them” and how you can put a stop to this, avoid it in the future, and create an atmosphere of connection and teamwork.
LINKS:
Intellectual humility.
Curiosity.
Mindfulness.
These three, very important, characteristics are essential to helping the best leaders to see things that others may not. Humility allows us to think of ourselves less. Curiosity allows us to learn and grow, and in the case of our teams, listen to (and HEAR) all of the perspectives. Mindfulness allows us to develop the skills of awareness and then “be with” what is occurring.
Granted, we will all see different things and miss things that others do see, but today, we will share, with you, how you can begin the mastery process of these three characteristics so that you can begin to see what others may not. AND, maybe even consider yourself in the “best leaders” category!

This week, we are discussing how to address situations that can feel awkward and sensitive at work. For example, things like gender and race, harassment, and even the way someone is dressed. Ignoring these issues doesn’t help. Neither does addressing them unwisely.
Almost every leader has had to navigate a conversation that can feel sensitive and awkward and we want to ensure that we handle this correctly. First of all, we need to start with knowing and understanding our own motivations. Then we also have to acknowledge our own vulnerability in having these conversations. But how do we do this?
We will give you tips, examples, and healthy ways to successfully navigate these conversations in a way that is mutually beneficial and respectful!
LINKS:
This week we are discussing managing our energy! This is typically and mistakenly referred to as managing our time, however, our energy is the key here! Unfortunately, a common theme for many leaders is one of overwhelm and having too much on our plates. BUT!! We have some solutions!
We’ll share examples, tools you can use, and overall tips. We want you, after this episode, to be able to feel well, jive with what you are doing, and have enough time to do the things you WANT to do! So practice, pause, collect, and decide what you need to do, get it in a trusted system, and enjoy the moment!

This week, we’re doing something a little different: we’re going to give you some ways to mess around at work.
Yes, you heard us right! That is, if you want to be productive, of course.
What? How does this work?
Well, we did a show on humor at work a while back, so refer to that for some interesting tie ins. This week’s show is about making space to play at work. What does play do for us? It engages us, helps us to think creatively, and laugh. Essentially, when we’re laughing, we’re learning! The science on this is also pretty clear: we need play and laughter. These create connection!
We’re going to play some fun games today: “Letter of the Day,” and “Word Blurt.” We will share some really fun games you can play at work, as well, so that YOU can see your engagement and productivity rise.
And have fun!

How often do we consider the intentions behind our actions?
Every act brings about some effect in our lives. In some cases, we may see immediate results of our actions and in other cases, we may not see the effect for many years to come. Regardless, what matters the most is our intentions and motivations that created the act.
This week, we will discuss some examples and the reason behind today’s topic, as well as how to go about doing this. This is definitely no small task and does require a great amount of responsibility, so we want to give you the tools necessary to handle this in a way that brings about wisdom and peace!

This week, we are talking about a never spoken about part of feedback. The one big conversation that never seems to take place. Today’s conversation builds off of the conversation back in episode 155.
Let’s take the example that you’re having trouble with a member of your team. There are 2 scenarios that typically arise:
But there is a HUGE part of the conversation that you are missing with this person! Sure, you’ve addressed their problem and given your feedback. But what are you missing? Why are you still having this problem?
The answer to this, as well as some really helpful tips, is in today’s episode! Dive in and watch your feedback results change dramatically!

How do you know if, when you are looking for a new job, the company/job will be a good fit for you?
More people leave their boss than the company at large. This says a lot about the culture of the company that the boss has created and/or influenced. So it’s important to get as much of a feel for this as you can before accepting the job.
As a person looking for a new job, you’d hope and think you could decipher what the company stands for: what they value, by their values. Wouldn’t people really show up that way? Unfortunately, as we’ve discussed previously, this isn’t always the case.
We will be discussing all of this on today’s episode. There are three really important things to look for when interviewing: relationships, communication, and change. Here are three key questions, to go along with these three things, that you can ask in your interview.
LINKS:
Perfectionism. Over-preparing. Obsession.
How do you know when you’re ready? Or when it’s ready? When is good enough… well, good enough?
We will be discussing a number of specific examples that we hope will lead you to excellence, but yet away from perfectionism and, therefore, stress, anxiety, and a whole host of other problems. Overcommitting to get something done usually never works well.
Here’s something really important to remember: If you’ve used enough time, energy and monetary resources, it’s good enough.
Let that sink in.

What does it mean to be patient?
We’ve all been told to be patient, that patience is a virtue, etc. etc. However, what does it REALLY mean? How do we actually achieve being patient in a way that helps us and helps others?
The definition of patience is: the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.
Good luck.
However, when we want to be successful and achieve our life vision, patience is key. Without it, we jump from one thing to the next, never noticing what is occurring around us.
We will discuss some realistic ways to achieve patience, personal experiences, examples, and benefits of patience, and we will give you some peace and confidence in this journey. Patience is a practice and it needs to be cultivated and it will take time, but it will be well worth it.

Are you for real or just creating a marketing campaign?
Do your values actually represent who you are and what you value?
Many companies state values that are, well, obvious. It’s essential that your values represent you and what you stand for, not simply what’s already implied.
We will discuss some examples of excellent company values and not so good values in this week’s episode. We’ll share suggestions and tips on how you can create better values for you and your company in a way that your customers, culture, and employees will understand and be able to identify with.

What makes a group, at work, great?
Culture.
Culture creates the success or the failure of a group. Culture comes from the latin word cultus which means “to care.” So when someone asks you about your culture, they are, essentially, asking you about what you care about.
This week, we discuss culture, what we care about, and groups as part of findings from the book “The Culture Code” by Daniel Coyle. We share our thoughts, good and bad, on the book and the studies Dan conducted with the Navy Seals, the San Antonio Spurs, a comedy troupe, and an inner city school.
Our goal is to continue creating belonging, autonomy and competence within our groups/culture. Remember that every culture needs to be one that is willing to give up blame and also own it as a whole.
LINKS:
We truly are a LOT more resilient than we think. It’s amazing how easy it is to have doubt or fear or some other negative thought that causes us to “believe” that we aren’t as resilient as we wish we were. Resilience is our ability to respond to and bounce back from challenge, self-imposed or not.
Consider this: what are some things you’ve had to learn in the past year that brought out your resilience? Were you able to overcome them? Consider what you’ve learned from these challenges and be proud of those accomplishments! We’ll discuss how you can and will overcome the challenges and setbacks in your life. Here’s some encouragement:

Today’s topic centers on developing ourselves! We’re all about growing and expanding here on this show, but it’s not JUST about getting better. For example, comparing ourselves to others (we need to be better like them…) is a recipe for disaster. Besides, it won’t last. It can’t. So, actually, it’s not about “getting better.” Instead, it’s about growing and expanding in a way that best fits and helps us and helps those around us.
We discuss some of the conversations and advice surrounding developing ourselves so we can dispel the myths and do this correctly. Staying connected to our biggest “whys” and motivations and intentions is important. Finding what works for you and then sticking to it long enough to give it a good try is also essential. Finally, it’s important to focus on what you enjoy about a certain thing (sales for example) as well as the activity that helps you increase sales rather than just sales itself.

Who doesn’t love a good survey?
But beware the survey… they do have limits.
There are a number of issues with employee surveys, particularly “burnout” surveys and employee engagement surveys. There are a few biases (which we explain in the show) that play a huge factor in employee surveys. Most survey questions aren’t going to get the best, unbiased answer that you’re looking for. Your employees just want to look good in your eyes.
One of the first questions you should even ask is whether or not a survey is even necessary. Will it even help? Is the company environment and culture so bad that a survey is completely useless? If you send out a survey, are you even willing to listen and fix the problems? This is the first step before even considering writing a survey.
If you do choose to put together and send out a survey, we address how to craft a useful, helpful, and results-driven survey with well-worded questions to give you the accurate results you’re looking for and needing to better your culture and environment.
LINKS:
We are on the soapbox today! But there is a good reason for it. The overall idea and the way employee engagement is talked about, not the mention the poor definition of it, is just not healthy. This episode was inspired by an article in the Harvard Business Review stating that employees are so engaged that they’re burning out. 1 in 5 highly engaged employees are at risk for burnout.
What?
It’s not about engagement. It’s about RIGHT engagement. It’s about our body and mind being present in the same place at the same time. There are so many other issues with the definition of employee engagement and how it’s being presented. We will discuss this issues.
We’ll also discuss a better definition, a better way to approach this, AND some healthy and actionable tips you can implement with your employees and your organization to, ideally, create a healthy and RIGHT level of happier engagement.
