The Government have just released their most recent data outlining the progress of the 20,000 Uplift to police numbers (I know, they are not ‘extra’ officers!!).
The 20,000 target has to be hit by March 2023, but for many forces,
they are already planning intakes for that period.
While the past few years has seen a boom in police recruitment, my
prediction for the near future is how the service is about to go bust!

Here’s the NEW Police Competency And Values Framework!!
I’ve been busy this week with two visits to London, on Tuesday to
meet with Leanne, the Head of Diversity and Inclusion for the Met Police, and
on Wednesday, spending a shift with the Met Police Violent Crime Task Force.
While discussing recruitment issues with Leanne about what is working
well and what isn’t, I was asked the question, ‘what values would you assess candidates against?’
Good question and at the time I didn’t have an answer.
However, the next day I spent a shift with the Met Police
Violent Crime Task Force, where I witnessed values in action.
And so, following this experience, my own reflections on
the meaning of values, as well as the thoughts of a small group of clients, I
put together the new 7 Values for police officers to aspire to.
What do you think? Let me know!

Are you confused about what structure you should use for Competency and Values type questions at your Police Recruitment Interviews?
Look up how to answer them online and every webpage out there will
tell you to use the STAR method.
The thing is, as an answer model, it’s just not structured or
detailed enough. And it’s confusing - what is the difference between Task and
Action? One is what you intended to do and one is what you did? Eh?

Several police forces have introduced Direct Entry Detective Recruitment, which, quite frankly, I can’t get my head round as being a detective was once the most sought after role in the police service. Apparently there is now a national shortage and it has become increasingly difficult to recruit detectives internally. Why this is will be the subject of a separate podcast.
To ensure the right type of people are recruited as detectives most forces now run their own unique assessments on top of what is required of you nationally. So in this podcast I’m going to share with you structured approaches that will enable you to succeed with high marks with presentations, prioritisation exercises and briefings.
I also have a bit of a rant about the police getting involved in things that aren’t their role (sorry!)
If you’re not going for detective, or if you are already in ‘The Job’ the approaches I describe will still have value for you.

In this podcast Brendan reflects on recent interactive webinars where his clients practised providing answers to common interview questions followed by a debrief.
The learning Brendan shares will help you to improve your interview technique, whether you're applying for a role as a police officer, or any other career (the questions and ways of answering them are pretty much the same no matter what role you are going for).
This week the Metropolitan Police introduced a target for police recruitment in the future where 40% of all recruits will come from a Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic background. In addition, they will have to be residents of London.
In this week’s podcast, Brendan discusses how that announcement went down on Social Media, the response, or lack of response from senior officers, and how to achieve this target the police will need to re-imagine recruitment.
Highly respected as a police officer and an accomplished senior leader in the Metropolitan Police. In this interview, Shabnam, now retired, shares with you the highs and lows of a 30 year career serving the communities of London, as well as the messages and guidance she would give her younger self as she walked through the doors of Hendon on her first day.
Prepare to be inspired!

More than 70,000 people apply to join the police service over a 6 month period
Sounds like good news? But is this enough to meet the needs of a police service, which needs to recruit over 48,000 officers over a 3 year period?
In this episode, Brendan argues how it isn’t and how the ‘radical progress’ needed to resolve a once in a generation opportunity to ensure fair representation of BAME and other minority groups in the police service will not happen through ‘additional training,’ it will need a massive overhaul of the recruitment process and culture within the service.

Racism in Policing and in the Police Recruitment process. In this episode Brendan discusses how racism might just be a thing in the Police Service, how one Policing Crime Commissioner is looking to improve the Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) representation in his police force, and how legitimacy through better representation of communities within the police service won’t happen until the recruitment process is overhauled as currently it discriminates against BAME candidates.
