Here we chat with two amazing forest school Mumma’s and discover what it feels like to join a session, what they thought it would be like and what benefits they believe being outside has brought to theirs and their children’s lives. We also have a very special guest ‘Kit’ who you can hear and who has been at our forest play sessions from 10 days old.

We discover what helped them to choose forest school? Why being outside in another space other than your garden can help you be in the moment. Vicky and Tarryn also chat honestly about being outside in every weather, they talk about being in the right clothes and having the shelter to keep them dry.

It helped them to discover that the weather does not have to dictate your life

Toddlers run around so much and move that they stay warm, they often end up taking layers off. Vicky chats about how her 10-day old baby was snuggled, warm and dry in his carrier next to her.

We chat together about feeding, helping and supporting each other.

Trusting children and helping them to be independent is key to our forest school and learning outcomes. This starts with tiny babies where sleep can be improved, friendships are made and serotonin is boosted.

We look at how forest school can help you and your little ones to thrive: Having a warming cuppa made for you whilst creating, making, learning, developing brains and starting parenting life together with your baby in a positive environment.

Becky is delighted to be joined by Mindy as they chat all about what Mumma's might need to help them and their children to thrive in the early days of parenting. We find out about both their experiences from being pregnant to having a young baby.

We discover what helped us and what we could of had in place that would of really made a difference to our journey into motherhood. It turns out for us some of the very simple things in life like snuggling up at a friends house, getting cosy in a sleeping bag, having a cuppa and dunking several chocolate biscuits, chatting about all sorts of things and just being able to say whatever you need to, might hold the key to perinatal wellbeing.

Being a new parent is different for everyone, however perhaps creating a community where everyone feels accepted and supported with no judgement might just be what makes all the difference.

The Beckies are delighted to be joined by Dr Janet Rose, Emotion Coaching Co-Founder and Principle of Norland College.

We discuss shaping children’s brains and the importance of our communications as educators and teachers upon children’s lives, not only in practice now, but for their futures.

Janet explains how the way we talk and communicate with children shapes brains. She shares the latest research that is needed for practice. She enlightens us about the way children process the tone of the voice first. They are scanning their world; non-verbal interactions are recognised and processed.

We are wired to connect with our social world.

Babies and young children are seeking a response to their gestures – baby is connection seeking and communicating, and how the adult responds will literally be shaping the neuro-wiring in the child’s brains.

A career with children could be viewed as not being rocket science ( one of the children you listen to and teach may become a rocket scientist), however it is definitely brain science and choosing a career in early years and education or with any age child, mean’s you are responsible for creating the environments where brain development is optimal! Connections, communications, listening and trusting children’s ideas really does matter!

Here The Beckie's chat together about what children really need from the adults in their lives, we explore what it means to be an advocate for children and why this really matters.

Why do children need advocates? What is the role of all educators for children of all ages? What does this look like in everyday practice, how are children seen and heard ?

We discover how to really observe and understand what the children are communicating.

Open communications are based on how we feel and what we see, use your power for good to ensure all children and adults are supported, can thrive and feel safe to learn. The child should always be at the centre of their curriculum and their ideas should lead it.

We look at challenging the status quo, advocating for yourself and for the children. It is important to speak up and speak out professionally. If you are in a family with children you also have the ability to advocate.

After all, it's not every career that is key to developing brains for now and for the future, so we must take our role seriously and keep researching and advocating every day.

Hayley was a teacher who decided to understand and research further around supporting emotions in the classroom. She fell in love with play therapy and how to understand and support children.
Working with families and creating robust connections is so important.
With the child at the centre and building trusting relationships is always the place to start. We look at anxiety for children, perhaps running away, not wanting to go in. Hayley discusses anger as an anxiety and fear response. We explore children's behaviour as communication.
Don't often think of soothing when we see anger
have a listen and see what could help our responses as educators and families.
Take a breath and feel into what is going on for you - soften ourselves and think how we are framing this. Respond and validate.

Here the Beckies chat with Lynne, an outstanding childminder, we discover all about her latest Ofsted visit. Grab a cuppa and join us for ten minutes to find out what an Ofsted inspections feels and looks like.
Interactions, bonds and relationships were key to what the Ofsted inspector was observing.
Independent skills were high up on the list; to help build these skills with the children Lynne takes the time for every child to have chance to create their own snacks, pour drinks and build their confidence in their own abilities.
To have an 'I can do this' attitude children need to have opportunities to do things for themselves.From a young age children should try out their ideas and test these, to get things wrong and learn from their own thoughts is crucial for their development. Children learn by doing and with a supportive adult to help when invited in or when needed.
Mini - adventurers thrive in Lynne's practice, she listens well and works closely with the children and families to understand their needs. She builds upon their ideas and interests to enable them to have ownership of the play space.
We were interested to find out what Lynne feels is the best thing about working with children and owning her own business - freedom and independence in her practice enables the children to thrive.

We know shouting at and shaming children is wrong and we have a duty to do something about this, be the person that makes the difference, be the child's advocate and challenge unkind and unprofessional behaviour.

Confidence should be the first thing we support, do the children see themselves as a worthwhile person ? How are the children responded to and are they respected?

Noticing what children are say is crucial and how we respond to children's communications is key to confidence building. Does the child feel worthwhile let't think about our responses, how does your self esteem feel in your environment and how does this feel for the children in your care?
Children need to be seen and heard, we need to understand gestures and look for schemes from a very young age.
Have a 10 min listen and discover more about schemas, what is the child really telling us and how do we could respond ? Building confidence needs to be at the heart of all practice whatever age child you teach or live with.
Children get an idea of how worthwhile a person they are at the age of six (yr 1 children), their self esteem can be boosted by teachers with a great knowledge of schema play and with educators and family around them who not only listen but who teach through extension of the child's lines of inquiry. Jo's background is as an Early Years Teacher and a play lead for open access play projects with the ethos of play being Free to use, free to choose, free to come and go as you please.Jo and Becky chat about the use of real open-ended objects, she uses china and inspires the children to explore the opportunities this brings through risk management and the use of objects that are not plastic . We explore understanding the world through nostalgia and looking at the history of the objects with the children (all of that from a tea cup)!! Here The Beckies talk with Aggie a student teacher who is studying for her PGCE for primary education.
She chats about what led her to this route and what the passion is behind her choice to work with children as a primary teacher for 5-11 year olds
Aggie has her foundations in early years working in a free-flow setting and also Managing a 4-2-11 camp that runs in the holidays.
What is it really like to be a young person studying to teach the next generation?
She talks about what makes you come alive and trying different things to ensure that you love what you, testing out your ideas helps you to know what is the right career path for you.
The PGCE route Aggie is on follows a University base and placements in schools leading to teaching the class. Aggie describes what the workload is like at Uni with honesty and how trying to stay organised and doing work little and often really helps. One of the main things she has found that has helped is to be part of a community of support with your colleagues on the course and create opportunities to help each other.
What is it really like being back in a school environment? Aggie has found that school does not seem to have changed from when she attended and discusses how she would like to create a completely natural environment and how she has taken the children's learning outside. Science outside proved a great hit with the children and their learning was more engaged and less distracted.

What does this actually mean, are stammering and stuttering the same thing?
Here the Beckies chat about what you might see or hear?
Children can get stuck on their words this is called 'blocking', you might notice a change to a breathing pattern where children take a big extra breath, have a listen and discover what else you might notice.
Stammering can cause anxiety for children, so what should we do?
If the child is aware, upset , angry or frustrated then talking about this with the child can help. Talking about how the child might feel and naming the emotions the child might feel can really help.
When should you get support and advice?
We help develop understanding of when you should get advice ?
Top Tips:Adults slow yourself down and model your talking , don't tell children to slow down.
Keep positive relaxed eye contact. Show how we are interested in what the children is saying not how they are saying it. Outdoors is a fabulous environment for this to happen naturally.

Our sessions are held outdoors without regular toys or equipment. They are in a natural environment that supports the child's choice and ideas. The space is as large as possible and there is time to play and talk with parents and families.

Here The Beckies are keen to discover more about play and our delighted to be joined by Michelle from the University of Worcester. Michelle tells us what Psycholudic Play Theory is, it's background and makes it so easy to understand.
The word Psycholudic means the brain/mind and play. Michelle is so pleased to share this idea, demystify it and empower everyone in the early years arena to understand and use this theory. This defines the role of the adult in the play process.
We talk about the desire for play being sparked in the children's brain, the child sends out a cue and there is a return required, this can come from the environment, this can come from the adult if we are invited to return the cue. Play flow starts and the play cycle begins.
We talk about what we should and shouldn't do in play as early years professionals.
In practice we will be holding the play, we will be observing and we will be sensitively retuning the cue. Michelle really helps us to understand this idea, you may need to listen a few times to this podcast as it has a lot of brilliant content. We found the more we have listened the more we now understand about Psycholudics Play Theory.

The Value of Play

Here the Beckies are delighted to talk with Lynnette and John about their extensive knowledge of Schema Play.
We chat about the ethos of their community interest company SchemaPlay, we discover their amazing research and practical knowledge of enabling child led play and extending this.
Lynnette discusses how all children's learning comes from the child, and how we can extend this through really knowing what the child can do. SchemaPlay has its foundations in understanding the child. John talks about these foundations being based in what the child can do (and not what they cannot do). Schemes are a language for understanding what children do, SchemaPlay supports practitioners to build on their knowledge of the child.
Children learning through play is widely recognised and understood, children are self motivated, and are doing their own thinking in the process, they are pulled along by the current of their own activity Csikszentmihalyi (1979). The practitioner steps very gently, with sensitivity they support this and build upon it to take the child in perhaps a more 'fruitful' direction. We chat about how exhausting and amazing early years can be.

Lynnette gives real life ideas and case studies and brings to life the practitioners role in supporting and extending eureka moments !

Here the Beckies talk about The New Year, what is happening now and where we are at, what has been difficult and our hopes and thoughts for the future.
To be honest we really mean from March 2020 to now!
Becky has being trying to master being a virtual speech and language therapist, she feels very supported by the NHS in her arena. Parents have still accessed virtual support and created new understanding together with their children . Becs has also safely conducted face to face appointments, with all the right equipment to protect her.
The Beckies also discuss how Early Years have literally not stopped and the level of support for professional protection is just not the same . Early Years are working with children everyday and quality interactions are what really matter. We believe whatever you have chosen to do in Early Years you are brave and amazing professionals. We believe you must have a fair choice in whatever this decision is. We strive for fair funding for Early Years!
Becky talks about her role as the fulltime Early Years Lead for Thriving Language.

Listen to what someone is really saying, to correct them is never a good idea. It stops flow, its stops creativity . Try hard not to form your response while others are talking as you don't really know what they are thinking. Allow for gaps conversations.
What are we really trying to understand, and how do we value others.
To be listened to is to be loved.
Try to get over the hiccups in conversations, as the value is in the interactions you create not in pronunciation.

Here the Beckies talk about what can help you when you are looking for an early years space for your child. The family are the first educator of the child and you are the advocate for the child. Would you like to stay and spend a lot of time in the setting you are looking at?
What is your instinct telling you? What does your child like to do, where do they like to play ? What environment are they most happy in.
You are the expert in your own child...Settling children is very important never rush them, understand for the child that they need to feel safe, don't leave a child with people they don't know, create relationships for life. Listen to and observe what the child is telling you.
You need to choose the environment that suits your child and family.
These are some things you might hear : Key Person - They will keep your child in mind, it takes time to build relationships but this person will be able to start helping you to do this straight away.
Google : Early Years Development Matters and have a look, this has some great information on what your child may be doing at their early years providers.
Think of starting a new job and how we want to be settled and get to know our colleagues, well its no different for a child, except that they don't always get a say in where they play. Observe how your child acts in different environments what are they trying to tell you?

Here the Beckies talk about supporting professionals, families and children with SEND in practice; what will really help and how do we make sure the paperwork we create really works and makes a difference. One of the most important things is that the team and family understand what they are trying to do to help make the child's life better. The targets and actions should be realistic, this should be a natural process.
