ABOUT RUTH KARRON, M.D. Ruth Karron, M.D., is a Professor of International Health in the Bloomberg School of Public Health with a joint appointment in the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Karron is a pediatric infectious diseases physician, virologist, and vaccinologist, and is Director of the Johns Hopkins Vaccine Initiative. Dr. Karron has substantial experience in the evaluation of respiratory virus vaccines in adult and pediatric populations. Dr. Karron’s research interests also include the development of immune responses to respiratory viral infections in early life, the epidemiology of RSV and other respiratory viral diseases in low resource settings, and public policy and ethical issues related to vaccine development and distribution. She co-led the Pregnancy Research Ethics for Vaccines, Epidemics, and New Technologies (PREVENT) Working Group, which released “Pregnant Woman & Vaccines Against Emerging Epidemic Threats: Ethics Guidance for Preparedness, Research and Response”, a guidance document with specific actionable recommendations to ensure that pregnant women are no longer excluded from receiving vaccines against emerging infectious diseases, and was co-developer of the COVID-19 Maternal Immunization Tracker (www.comitglobal.org ). Dr. Karron has been a member of a number of national and international vaccine advisory committees and panels, including the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the Gavi Vaccine Innovation Prioritisation Steering Committee (VIPS), and the COVAX ACT-accelerator COVID vaccine Maternal Immunization Working Group, and has chaired the FDA Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) and the Vaccines Advisory Panel for the Wellcome Trust. She is currently deputy chair of the WHO Product Development for Vaccines Advisory Committee (PDVAC). In 2016, Dr. Karron received the Robert M. Chanock award for outstanding contributions to RSV research. ABOUT WALT HANDELSMAN Walt Handelsman is the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist for The Times-Picayune/The Advocate in New Orleans. His work is nationally syndicated by Tribune Content Agency to over 200 newspapers around the country and internationally. One of the mostly widely reprinted cartoonists in America, Handelsman’s work has been seen in Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, The Washington Post and others. He has been a featured guest on ABC’s “Nightline”, CNN, PBS, NBC and Fox News. In 2006, Walt taught himself Flash animation and in 2007 he became the first person to win the Pulitzer Prize for animation. Before returning to New Orleans in 2013 to join The New Orleans Advocate, Walt worked for Newsday, The Times-Picayune, The Scranton Times and a chain of Baltimore/Washington weeklies. He holds an associate degree in Art Therapy and a General Studies degree in advertising. He worked for a Baltimore advertising agency before becoming a cartoonist. Walt is the author of 9 collections of his editorial cartoons as well as a children’s book. He lives in New Orleans with his wife, Jodie. They have 2 adult children. Acclaimed long-form writer Tom Junod takes us behind “Untold,” the massive, 30,000-word immersive story of ‘the most dangerous player in the history of college football’ recently released by ESPN Magazine. ESPN senior writer Tom Junod has written some of the most enduring and widely read longform journalism of the last 30 years. He joined ESPN in 2016 and has specialized in deeply reported stories on subjects ranging from Muhammad Ali’s funeral to Tom Brady’s desire to play forever. He has been nominated for an Emmy for his work on “The Hero of Goodall Park,” an E60 Film on the ancient secrets that were revealed when a car drove on a baseball field in Maine during a Babe Ruth League game in 2018. In his most recent story for ESPN, “Untold,” he and ESPN investigative reporter Paula Lavigne spent nearly two years uncovering the horrifiic crimes of Todd Hodne, a Penn State football player who in the late 1970s terrorized State College PA and Long Island NY as a serial sexual predator. Before coming to ESPN, Junod wrote for GQ and Esquire, where he won two National Magazine Awards and was a finalist for the award a record 11 times. For Esquire’s 75th Anniversary, the editors of the magazine selected his 9/11 story “The Falling Man’ as one of the seven top stories in Esquire’s history. in 2019, his story on beloved children’s TV host Fred Rogers, “Can You Say…Hero?,” served as the basis for the movie “A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood,” starring Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys. His work has been widely anthologized in collections including The Best American Magazine Writing, the Best American Sports Writing, the Best American Political Writing, the Best American Crime Writing, and the Best American Food Writing. He has also written for The Atlantic. Junod has won a James Beard Award for an essay about his mother’s cooking, and is working on a memoir about his father for Doubleday. Born and raised on Long Island, he lives in Marietta, GA with his wife Janet, his daughter Nia and his pit bull Dexter.

At 10 years old, Mary Alice Williams decided she wanted to tell news stories. Dr. Greenfield lectures to public and medical groups throughout the world, and has appeared on CNN, Good Morning America, The Today Show, Fox News, ESPN, NPR and HBO. His work has been featured in U.S. News and World Report, Newsweek, People, Time, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and The Economist. He is widely credited with popularizing the variable ratio reinforcement schedule of process addiction and the dopamine-behavioral addiction connection. Dr. Greenfield’s recent research and clinical work is focused on the neurobiology and psychopharmacology of compulsive Internet and technology use, behavioral addiction medicine, and compulsive Smartphone use. Dr. Greenfield is a member of the American Society for Addiction Medicine, Fellow and Past-president of the Connecticut Psychological Association, The Sexual Medicine Society of North America, and American Society for the Advancement of Pharmacotherapy. He studies public opinion, political communication, digital media, and changing journalistic practices. Among his projects in collaboration with the Reuters Institute is in-depth examination of “news avoidance” and infrequent news use among audiences in the UK and elsewhere. Dr Toff received his doctorate in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from Harvard University. While we were distracted by politics, artificial intelligence advanced by leaps and bounds. Deep fake artistry is now so believable that, in the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. In this episode of FMC Fast Chat, go inside the world of computer scientist Hao Li, reputedly the best deep fake artist on the planet. (You may have seen his visual effects work in Furious 7 or The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.) Hao Li is CEO and Co-Founder of Pinscreen, a startup that builds cutting edge AI-driven virtual avatar technologies. He is also a Distinguished Fellow of the Computer Vision Group at UC Berkeley. Before that, he was an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southern California, as well as the director of the Vision and Graphics Lab at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. Hao’s work in Computer Graphics and Computer Vision focuses on digitizing humans and capturing their performances for immersive communication, telepresence in virtual worlds, and entertainment. His research involves the development of novel deep learning, data-driven, and geometry processing algorithms. He is known for his seminal work in avatar creation, facial animation, hair digitization, dynamic shape processing, as well as his recent efforts in preventing the spread of malicious deep fakes. He was previously a visiting professor at Weta Digital, a research lead at Industrial Light & Magic / Lucasfilm, and a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia and Princeton Universities. He was named top 35 innovator under 35 by MIT Technology Review in 2013 and was also awarded the Google Faculty Award, the Okawa Foundation Research Grant, as well as the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Early Career Chair. He won the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Award in 2018 and was named named to the DARPA ISAT Study Group in 2019. In 2020, he won the ACM SIGGRAPH Real-Time Live! “Best in Show” award. Hao obtained his PhD at ETH Zurich and his MSc at the University of Karlsruhe (TH).
