This podcast aims to open up the ’mysterious’ and ’vague’ Eastern Bloc to a broader, international audience. Each episode is devoted to one artist exploring their relation, interest and urgency to create within the framework of the post-Soviet sphere.

78 – in conversation with academic researcher and cultural historian Natasha Konradova.

Natasha began her career as a passionate journalist, travelling across remote regions of Russia and speaking with people. In 2014, following the annexation of Crimea, she and her family decided to leave Moscow and settled in Berlin.

Since 2022, she has been active in a human rights organisation, running various educational programs for youngsters, who want to learn about the unprocessed Soviet past through oral history and personal stories.

On the podcast Maisa is speaking about her newest book Maisa in Webland - Detouring UX Destinies* published by Set Margines #63 in 2025.

The book combines fiction, interviews, case studies, and critical theory to shed light onto the history of the web and gives examples of how we can still resist dominant digital structures and build alternative realities at a time when much of the web has been taken over by the Big Tech.

Linda's work is rooted in an exploration of human emotions, ranging from vulnerability and trauma to the search for happiness. Through photography and interdisciplinary methods, she strives to capture fleeting emotional states, the intimate connections between strangers, and personal transformation.

On the podcast she speaks about often contested topics of photographic nudes, erotica as well as censorship and ways of protecting yourself as a female photographer oftentimes working with complete strangers.

5 Between Mothers

In conversation with Ukrainian artist Olena Pronkina, as part of a new series of Kitchen Conversations devoted to mothers and motherhood in the arts.

For the past couple of years, Olena’s work has focused on experiences of transition, instability, and the search for one’s place within new environments and conditions.

Becoming a mother brought a pause to her usual artistic practice for almost two years. During that time, Olena turned to analog photography, which she could practice during walks while her child was sleeping.

In conversation with multidisciplinary Polish artist Marcelina Amelia, in a new series of Kitchen Conversations devoted to mothers and motherhood in the arts.

Marcelina Amelia was born in Częstochowa (Poland) and is now based in Brighton (UK). Marcelina works with painting, print, textile, photography, installation, video, and performance. Her art touches on themes such as migration, motherhood, mental health, feminism, spirituality, personal rituals, dreams, and the complexities of the human experience.

On the podcast Marcelina Amelia looks back at her debut solo show: 'Sun Child Moon Child' that took place between 5.12-11.01 in Helm Gallery, Brighton.

Sebastian's long-term documentary projects explore the interplay between spaces, people, and systems of power. In 2022, he co-founded the English-language magazine Solomiya with Vsevolod Kazarin. The publication showcases contemporary Ukrainian artists and writers, with each issue (now at No. 5) examining different aspects of the ongoing war — and how people in Ukraine continue to resist, survive, and live within a new reality.

An honest conversation about the bodily, physical, and mental effort it takes to be a mother—labor that’s so often simplified or diminished to quote Larysa “Oh, she’s just a stay-at-home mom.”

Working primarily with pastel and mixed media under the camera, Alisi creates extraordinary movement through painterly textures, exploring nomadic and Indigenous ways of life in Mongolia and beyond.

The podcast conversation centers on her 2023 short film Baigal Nuur – Lake Baikal, a breathtaking reimagining of the formation of the world’s oldest lake in Siberia. The film features hand-painted animation, found objects, and the voice of an Indigenous Buryat woman, preserving fragments of her endangered language—a dialect of Mongolian.

65 - about the exhibition Stanisław Wyspiański: Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery in London

In conversations with Alison Smith - curator of the display, previously Chief Curator of the National Portrait Gallery, London and currently Director of Collections and Research at the Wallace Collection.

Stanisław Wyspiański (1869-1907) was a Polish painter, designer, poet and originator of modern Polish Theater. He was also a key figure of the Młoda Polska (Young Poland) art movement that helped keep national identity alive during Poland's partitions.

This podcast episode offers a glimpse into the unique pastel works of Wyspiański, featuring stories of his sitters—including members of the Cracovian intelligentsia—his family, and the artist himself, as well as his decade-long struggle with an illness that profoundly shaped his life and creative output.

The one-room display, showing 16 of Wyspiański's pastel portraits at the National Portrait Gallery in London is free and open to all till the 13th of July 2025.

Aziza Kadyri is passionate about exploring new ways of engaging with cultural heritage, with a particular focus on textiles and costume—art forms that have traditionally been labelled as 'feminine'. She’s also deeply interested in how XR/AR/VR and AI technologies can enhance artistic research, edutainment, and socially engaged practices. At the heart of her practice is a commitment to participatory work, especially within Central Asian and Uzbek communities.

In this episode, we dive into her role in co-creating the exhibition for the Uzbekistan National Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. Through this conversation, Aziza shares her vibrant, globally-spanning journey toward becoming an established artist, showcasing her work around the world. Most importantly, she highlights her mission to amplify the voices of Central Asian women artisans—whose stories have often been overlooked by history.

63 - in conversation with Georgian director and filmmaker - Elena Mikaberidze.

In early February, Kitchen Conversations teamed up with From Julia's Desk to host a live communal event in Berlin. As part of the evening's program, we had the privilege of screening the Georgian film Blueberry Dreams. The documentary follows Soso, a good-hearted father who leads his family of four in starting a blueberry farm to secure their future. Set in northern Georgia, their village lies near the troubled border with the Russian-backed region of Abkhazia, an area where tensions have been simmering for over 30 years.

A few days after the screening, Patrycja sat down with filmmaker Elena Mikaberidze to record a podcast, diving deeper into the extraordinary documentary, the live of the family at its center, and the broader climate in Georgia today, with a special focus on mixed families navigating the challenges of living a united life in a politically divided country.

Artsiom Lobach is the final guest recommended by the Belarusian Filmmakers Network. Today, we dive into his documentary film Way Home (2020), which tells the story of Pavlo – a young man who, following Crimea’s annexation by Russia in 2014, moves to the Ukrainian countryside in search of solitude. Belarusian filmmaker Artsiom, only truly understood his protagonist’s journey after he himself, was forced to leave Belarus and settle in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Born in Mogilev, an industrial city in what is now Belarus, Vladimir Kozlov grew up amidst the unraveling of the Soviet Union. His formative years in the suburbs were marked by the chaos of the early 1990s—a time of unbridled freedom, wild capitalism, and rampant crime. Moving from Mogilev to Minsk and eventually to Moscow, Vladimir has dedicated his life to unpacking the legacy of the Soviet past.

Through his writing and cinematographic work, he delves deep into the cultural and social fabric of Russian and Belarusian society, asking pressing questions: Where did we go wrong? What did we overlook, leading us back to a totalitarian and authoritarian reality?

The Neighbours explores the silenced memories of survivors of political violence during Bulgaria’s communist era (1945 to 1989). Employing found objects, video, and sound design, the installation conveys the stories of those who endured Bulgarian Gulag camps and prisons. This multidisciplinary project, rooted in extensive scholarly research and more than 40 interviews conducted by the practitioners, reimagines the survivors‘ homes —the spaces where the interviews occurred—inviting audiences to inhabit them and bear witness.

Katarzyna Kozyra is one of Poland's most famous conceptual artists, working internationally since the 90s. In 2012, she founded the Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation to help women artists and cultural workers from Central and Eastern Europe promote their work.

Secondary Archive tells the history of non-Western — primarily Central and Eastern European — art through the lens of gender, covering the period after WWII through the present. This archive is composed of artistic statements and unknown pages of the biographies and practices of female artists, where one can see the names of those who have been marginalized, neglected, forgotten, or remain little known to the general public alongside artifacts from key female figures of non-Western art.

EP. 55 - in conversation with visual artist representing Romania at the 60th La Biennale di Venezia, Șerban Savu.

The exhibition in the Romanian Pavilion, What Work Is, revisits the iconography of labour, drawing inspiration from historical realism and the propaganda art of the Eastern Bloc. Instead of challenging these discourses directly, Șerban challenges them by rearranging their tropes. His aim is to capture and portray moments of pause and inactivity, of indistinction between work and leisure, as reflections of broader societal changes or crises.

The Romanian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2024 is curated by Ciprian Mureșan. The exhibition will take place in both the Giardini della Biennale and at The New Gallery of the Romanian Institute of Culture and Humanistic Research in Venice from April 20 till November 24, 2024.

Weronika Gertig - Burgess, Themerson Estate London

Franciszka Themerson (1907-1988) was a Polish, later British, painter, illustrator, filmmaker and set designer. Together with her husband Stefan Themerson, she was one of the most important experimental filmmakers in interwar Poland. Her film work, as well as her paintings and drawings, challenged social conformity and revealed her belief in individual freedom. During and after the Second World War, Francziszka Themerson created humorous works that dealt profoundly with the complex themes of trauma and loss.

The one-room display at Tate Britain is free and open to all till the 30th of March 2025.

EP. 51 - in conversations with Czech photographer and educator, Libuše Jarcovjáková.

Her distinctive work was first shown to a wide audience at Les Rencontres d'Arles in 2019, when Libuše was already in her 60s. Since then, her black and white analogue photographs depicting islands of freedom in a grey, communist Czechoslovakia have attracted much international attention.

As a tribute to Libuše's work, Czech filmmaker Klára Tasovská has created a film based on her photographs and diary entries entitled 'I'm Not Everything I Want to Be', which has just premiered at this 74th Berlinale Film Festival.

Mischa began his artistic journey by posing as a nude model at an art academy in Dresden. Over the last ten years, he has done long-term performances and site-specific actions, led educational workshops and worked in a food activist collective, just to name a few.

Most recently, Mischa put himself in a metal net filled with kilos of rescued bread and stood at a square in Zurich, to inform people about the terrible humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The event was dedicated to the socialization and professional integration of freelance Belarusian filmmakers in the German and EU film industries.

During the podcast, Leonid talks about his work as a film producer and his involvement in various projects aimed at bringing independent Belarusian cinema to international audiences, as well as supporting the filmmakers - many of whom have been living in exile since May 2020.

EP. 42 - in conversation with director and screenwriter bringing up the history of the Chechen Republic, Vladlena Sandu.

The conversation begins by speaking about Vladlena's complex identity; being born in Crimea, moving to Chechnya and living through the War, becoming a displaced person in Russia and eventually finding a safe home in Amsterdam, in March 2022.

Her films "Holy God" and "No Nation Without Culture" speak about the complex history of the Chechen Republic dating back to the 1940s. Confrontational, personal and very political visual work that reveals modern colonial structures of the Russian Federation and helps understand the current threats to the sovereignty of other former Soviet countries.

Upon visiting California (U. S.) Patrycja speaks to historian and curator Joes Segal about the history and programming of the Wende Museum. The Wende is an art museum, cultural center, and archive of the Cold War that explores social, political, and cultural change.

The conversation revolves around the importance of museum artefacts, the power of art in understanding the complexities of history, as well as contemporary ways of speaking about the broadly defined - socialist art.

EP. 40 - in conversation with visual artist and activist from Poland, Karolina Grzywnowicz.

Karolina's artistic work deals with plants in social and political context, often of a violent nature. Her methodology involves working with specialists across various disciplines, to allow for a space of interaction and exchange of knowledge.

During the conversations she speaks about her newest project 'Distillates'. Through three case studies conducted in Poland and Palestine, Karolina researches an active change of a landscape as an instrument of power used either to oppress people or to rewrite history.

For this episode I traveled to London to attend the press view of Magdalena Abakanowicz: Every Tangle of Thread and Rope at Tate Modern. After joining the curators tour I got the chance to sit down with Mary Jane Jacob - one of the three curators of the exhibition and speak about the work of Abakanowicz, her inspirations, philosophy and ways of creating art and life.

Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930-12017) was an extraordinary Polish artist known among others for her large fiber sculptures called the Abakans. Her use of organic materials broke new ground for art in the 1960s and 70s. Bringing together 26 of these radical works for the first time in the UK, the exhibition at Tate Modern presents a forest of towering sculptures, enabling visitors to explore their ambiguous forms and earthy scents.

Meet Pavlo Borshchenko - Ukrainian artist and photographer, for a long time based in Kyiv and currently residing in Warsaw. The main point of our conversation was his long-term photographic series 'Sumy, Sorrow of my days', featured among others on the cover of KAJET Journal 05 On Easternfuturism. On the podcast and through his work, Pavlo shares insides into the history of his hometown Sumy and his childhood, at the same time contemplating the gap between the generation of his grandparents, living under the Soviet regime and those born after 1989 into a different Ukraine.

Today's virtual kitchen table was joined by Natalia Papaeva - a visual and performance artist, born and raised in Buryatia (Eastern Siberia) and since 2013, living and working in the Netherlands. Informed by her Buryat-Mongolian background Natalia creates performances, in which she combines singing, spoken word and storytelling. Today I had the pleasure to speak to Selma Selman - a multidisciplinary artist from Bosnia and Herzegovina and of Romani origin. She is currently a resident of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and her work can be seen at Dokumenta 15 in Kassel till 25th of Sep 2022.

In this episode Selma shares stories of her past and sheds light onto her artistic and activist practice that aim to protect and enable female bodies and enact a cross-scalar approach to collective self-emancipation of oppressed women and ethnic minorities.

Meet Sophia Tabatadze - a Georgian visual artist working with film, drawing and installation currently based in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited worldwide, among others at the 52nd Venice Biennale and 10th International Istanbul Biennial.

On the podcast she sheds light on the making off her experimental documentary film 'Pirimze' that had it's premiere at Visions Du Réel in Nyon and tells a story of a Soviet building in Tbilisi and its capitalist afterlife. Sophia is also a co-founder of Mukao – a company that makes innovative products from corrugated cardboard as well as an organizer of the Grandmothers Film Festival, taking place in Rotterdam and Berlin every second year.

For this episode I invited Maja ∀. Ngom - a Polish-Senegalese multidisciplinary artist currently based in London. Maja's body of work is shaped by her unique experience of coming from an intergenerational and multi-ethnic family and explores issues of identity in the context of belonging and displacement.

Just before the end of the year I travelled to William Morris Gallery, located in north-east London to see Young Poland: An Arts and Crafts Movement (1890–1918) exhibition and speak to one of the shows curators, Julia Griffin.

From the end of the 18th-century Poland underwent successive partitions, resulting in the country disappearing from the map of Europe for 123 years. After a couple of failed military uprisings, Polish people understood that making art was the only remaining way to preserve their endangered national identity.

During our Kitchen Conversations, Julia Griffin shared her ongoing research on the Young Poland movement - its characteristics, socio-political motivations and heroes, among others Stanisław Wyspiański, Stanisław Witkiewicz, Karol Kłosowski and Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska.

This project was supported by Polish Cultural Institute, London (PCI) and co-financed by the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

Live from Berlin, my home kitchen was joined by Burkhard Körner - a choreographer, theater maker, dancer, performer and singer from Mittweida Saxony in East Germany. In his work Burkhard examines questions of the individual within the collective and looks for ways to translate memories into different forms.

Our conversation revolved around a theater piece he created together with Rika Weniger and Noah Voelker. "Wie macht man gute Kunst fur Ostdeutsche?" (How to make good art for East Germans?) talks about the history of East Germany and the memories and experiences of the nach-wende generation.

For this episode I had the pleasure to speak (again) with Tasha Arlova - a visual artist, filmmaker, public speaker and activist originally from Vitebsk, Belarus currently living and working in the Netherlands. In her recent work, Tasha looks back at her homeland, Belarus, exploring different ways in which the country is represented in the “West”. Her art practice as well as curatorial and activists engagements all attempt to subvert the "Western gaze" showing the East in a fresh and informed way.

For this episode of Kitchen Conversations I travelled to Łódź to visit one of the oldest museum of modern art in the world - Muzeum Sztuki, and chat with the head of Museum Research Center - Agnieszka Pindera. The Museum’s unique connection with the avant-garde dates back to the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, when a group of radical artists from the “a.r.” group began gathering works of the most important artists of that time for the Museum. Together with Agnieszka, apart from discussing the history of the institution and the revolutionary polish "a.r." group we also touched upon a series of exhibitions prepared for the celebratory 90 years of the Museum's existence.

This time my online kitchen was joined by a guest from overseas, Tatyana Ostapenko - a painter originally from Soviet Ukraine currently living and working in Portland, Oregon. Her paintings record the daily lives of people who usually don’t make it into official historical records. Through her body of work, Tatyana attempts to heal trans-generational trauma and questions traditions.

What stands behind the symbol of a Babushka or a Barbie? How does it feel to bring a meticulous studio work out onto a facade of a building? What's the smell of wild strawberries? That and more during this Kitchen Conversations!

This time I had the pleasure to speak with Ola Korbańska - a multidisciplinary designer and visual artist from Poznań, Poland. Using various media such as design, written text and illustration, Ola inquires about the nature of objects in the context of temporality and perception. During our Kitchen Conversations we spoke about cleaning, feminism and the different ways of protesting, through three of her recent art projects Purity is Temporary, Gentle Protest and The Six-Fuck.

This time my kitchen table was join by the music artist and aspiring academic Valerija Kravale. Valerija calls herself a Berliner and a Russian native speaker. Through her impressionistic vocal lines, guitar soundscapes and electronic dark wave, Valerija wants to reconnect with her past and explore the post-soviet nostalgia, calling her music Post-Soviet-Pop. During our conversation we spoke about her concert set "Constant Flux" and a recently released EP "We are betrayed" (Мы обмануты). What's more we also discussed the aversion to the Russian language shared across the former Soviet states.

For this episode I had the please to welcome the Amsterdam-based filmmaker Stefan Pavlović. His documentary film practice questions the role of intimacy in cinema and investigates the uncontrolled realms of language. During our Kitchen Conversations we discussed his newest feature-length documentary "Looking for Horses". The film tells a story of a unique bond between the filmmaker Stefan and the fisherman Zdravko, who lost his hearing during the Bosnian war and retreated to a lake to live in solitude.

For this episode I had the pleasure to meet Ștefan Ionescu-Ambrosie - a Romanian writer and researcher currently based in Barcelona. For the first episode of 2021 Marina Sulima - a Moldovan visual artist - hosted me in her home in Groningen, The Netherlands. In her work, Sulima likes to “create absurd worlds with their own logic, bizarre categories and uncanny physics. Playing with fact and fiction and using non-humans as actors allows her to bring unique insights about our living-together-on-a-damaged-planet.” During our talk, Sulima reflects on her work ‘Parcelpaedia’ a short fictional film responding to Italy Syndrome - a socio-medical term used to describe a type of depression experienced by Eastern European women who work as caregivers in Italy.
