That was how Kirsten Pagacz described her OCD to her therapist on their first session when she was well into her 30s--she'd been following orders from this mean taskmaster for 20 years, without understanding why. Initially the tapping and counting and cleaning and ordering brought her comfort and structure, two things lacking in her family life. But it never lasted; the loathsome self-talk only intensified, and the rituals she had to perform got more bizarre. By high school she was anorexic and a substance abuser—common "shadow syndromes" of OCD. By adulthood, she could barely hide her problems and held on to jobs and friends through sheer grit. Help finally came in the form of a miraculously well-timed public service announcement on NPR about OCD--at last her illness had an identity. Leaving the OCD Circus reveals the story of Pagacz's traumatic childhood and the escalation of her disorder--demonstrating how OCD works to misshape a life from a very young age--and explains the various tools she used for healing including meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy, yoga, exposure therapy, and medication.

MyNDTALK - Is His America Your America? - S.L.Young
"The day I was born my mom looked at me with pride to determine if had safely arrived. In response to my mother’s request to determine if I was okay, she heard someone say, “It’s a boy,” which gave me a label on my first day. As I navigated the neighborhoods away from my house, I was clearly in areas in which I clearly stood out. It was in these moments I learned that I would be described by a label regardless of the things that I brought to the table. The words that are often used don’t describe who I am, but these types of descriptors are sometimes negatively attached to me instead of the positive man that I am." S.L.Young , Huffington Post 2014

MyNDTALK - LIVIN' in the SHADE: Dr. Eric L. Johnson & Akili Uchenna
More often than not, the relationships between fathers and sons impact the understanding that many males develop about notions of manhood. Even when a man's father has not been present in a way that meets his expectations, his understanding of what it means to be a man is impacted either by the noted absence or the perceived relationship inadequacies. In such cases, men are faced painfully with only two choices: Extend an unhealthy and unhappy notion of manhood or do the work that heals his heart and soul in a way that makes him better. However, when men have positive and healthy relationships with their fathers, they have the opportunity to grow from their father's successes and learn from his mistakes. No father and son relationship can be called perfect and as a result, there are always things that can be improved, even after one of them is gone." Father and son, Eric & Akili, discuss their relationship with honesty, humor, insight and thoughtfulness. Their conversation is a powerful one that should be heard by all.

MyNDTALK –C- Dr. Randy Flood and Dr. C. Donaldson
Men often behave badly, and it's easy to assume that's just the way they are. Some can be grandiose and aggressive; many others are good guys but emotionally absent and relationally disappointing. Psychologists Charlie Donaldson and Randy Flood contend, however, that most men's behavior is neither capricious or malevolent, but a product of a socialized disorder "mascupathy" - an exaggeration of the genetically masculine traits (aggression and invulnerability) and minimal expression of inherently feminine characteristics (openness and sensitivity.
MyNDTALK - Conquer Chronic Pain Dr. Peter Prezekop
The incidence of chronic pain has taken on epidemic proportions. The common response of traditional medicine has been to prescribe opioid painkillers, which can lead to overdose and addiction. Over the past ten years, Dr. Peter Przekop has developed a revolutionary alternative program to manage pain that goes well beyond the short-term relief of prescription painkillers. Conquer Chronic Pain will help you return to pain-free functioning. Gain the same insights Dr. Prezekop has brought to hundreds of chronic pain sufferers by learning how the brain can be reprogrammed to alleviate pain. You'll also learn how chronic stress, adversity, and negative emotions influence how we experience and interpret pain and what to do to reverse the pattern.
MyNDTALK - The Polyamorists Next Door - Dr. Elisabeth Sheff
Marriage and monogamy are not what they used to be. Many couples
are opting to start families before getting married, or deciding not
to get married at all. At the same time, gay couples in states that
recognize same-sex marriage are getting married in droves. Some
people prefer non-monogamy and have relationships that include
swinging and polyamory. The landscape of American marriage and
relationships is changing, and a variety of family systems are
developing and becoming more common."
Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, author of The Polyamorists Next Door returns to
MyNDTALK to discuss her extensive research with polyamorous
families, in which people are free to pursue emotional, romantic, and
sexual relationships with multiple people at the same time, openly
and with support from their partners, sometimes forming multi-partner relationships, or other arrangements that allow for emotional and sexual freedom within the family system. Dr. Sheff explains how
polyamorous relationships come to be, grow and change, manage the ins and outs of daily family life, and cope with the challenges they face both within their families and from society at large.
While polyamorous families are increasingly common, fairly little is
known about them outside of their own social circles or of the
occasional media sensationalism. This book provides information that
will be useful for professionals with polyamorous clients, educators
who wish to understand or teach about polyamory, and especially
people who wish to better understand polyamory themselves or explain it to their potential partners, adult children, or in-laws."
