About Elle Lewis
I am a cardiology nurse by profession. My background is Electrophysiology - which is a fancy way of saying the electric system of the heart. I take care of patient's with very sick hearts, in the worst times of their lives. It is an emotionally taxing job but one that is also very rewarding. It's funny to be in such a serious profession - one that is scientific and medical. I often joke that both sides of my brain work because I am also extremely creative and have a huge imagination. I'm always daydreaming, mostly about monsters. I love books so very much. I love stories. Adventures. I love to be taken out of this world and pulled into another.
Dark Touch is just the kind of book that I like to read. Because my job is so serious I often gravitate towards books that are fast paced, action packed, and an easy read. An entertaining escape. Dark Touch is a fun read, but it does have a deeper more serious tone. I grew up in a very volatile domestic violent house hold. My mother to this day has substance abuse problems. I have essentially been on my own since I was 15. The protagonist of the story, Sloan, has a similar background. The book is fun and yes, it has fantastical elements and lots of action. But at its heart it is a very human story about a girl struggling with her past. How to heal from wounds that seem like they will never close. This more serious tone is woven gradually throughout the book. It is a piece of my heart that I have placed within the pages. And I hope those going through similar struggles will read it and know that they can overcome these circumstances and find strength and hope. The message of the book is that our past does not have to define our future.
Many of the characters (who are in their early twenties) have an absent parent of some sort. So many children and young adults are abandoned, neglected, and on their own at a young age. I wanted to draw attention to this. How growing up in this way can leave you feeling out of touch... an outcast.
I got through these hard times by reading. Tolkien. C.S. Lewis.... I see them as my fathers. My family when I had none. Authors became my parents. They taught me to never give up. They taught me to fight, to remain a good person in the darkness. They gave me hope that one day I could free myself of an awful life. I did. I am the only woman in my family that went to college. The only person without a mugshot. I am proud of what I have accomplished. But it’s not enough. I need this message to find readers. I want to be the voice they hear, when they are alone, feeling lost and helpless. I want them to pick up Dark Touch, read it and think, "Yes, I am strong enough. This won't be my life forever. I can change my stars."

He has been a Visiting Professor of Mathematics at Caltech, a Science Fellow at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation, a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Mathematics at Harvard University, and a Visiting Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics at MIT.

AFTER more than a century, the disappearance of steamship Waratah remains the greatest sea mystery of modern times. Sergio Troncoso is the author of eight books. Because our online environment is not secure, identity theft is rife. Victims of identity theft’s profiles can be copied and used to create over 3000 different profiles at a time, that is staggering!
Deception, manipulation and theft are weaved into elaborate cyber crimes of which scam is just one segment. Scam is successful because their power and ability to deceive and manipulate is underestimated. They are experts at developing trust over a period of time and alienating unsuspecting victims from their circle of influence and trust.
Then there is the myth that only stupid people get scammed. There are all kinds of intelligence, but be that as it may, we forget that we are all members of the human race, first and foremost and that makes us vulnerable because we are all wired for connection and we want to feel acknowledged. Scammers know this and they know how to exploit it. Contrary to popular belief, the scam king pins are highly educated individuals which is why their scam success rate is so high. Economically active people are removed from society costing countries millions in lost income tax.
More staggering is the fact that scammers have the ability to electronically alter and manipulate voices. Many mistakenly believe that only stupid people get scammed. This is simply not true. Professionals such as doctors, lawyers, psychologists as well as social media influencers etc., have fallen victim to scams. You may be well educated in various other fields just not in the field or area of scams.
So how do we help people understand why they should not abandon family, friends and colleagues who are cyber crime survivors?
What are the psychological effects on a scam survivor and what the current gaps are in providing psychological support?
Experience shows that when you tell a person that they are being scammed, they rather become your enemy than to believe you. Why does this happen and what can friends and families do to negate this response?

How can I protect myself from an account takeover?
Nothing is guaranteed, but try these:
1) Delete all social media accounts you no longer use, as they may still be associated with an old email address someone else may begin using
2) Keep your recovery email addresses and phone numbers up to date
3) Use strong passwords
4) Don't use the same passwords for all accounts or for the recovery email account

How do I choose a secure password?
1) Try a password generator. You'll get a crazy password like x7gaF*QutEph$Tik&t4o, but no one will guess it!
2) If that's too daunting, here's another idea: think of a sentence at least eight words long, and use the first or last letter of each word, followed by a number and a symbol, if the platform allows it. Mix up the capitalization. An example: "I am truly the best damned parent ever" iaTtbdPe02#
3) Stay away from easy passwords like 123456, password, and qwerty and dictionary words - they are easily guessed by scammers
4) Stay away from birth dates, names, social security numbers and other obvious info linked to you

ABOUT KATHRYN HARRISON
Business Professional turned Artist, Kathryn Harrison, wrote and illustrated her debut picture book, Weeds in Nana’s Garden in 2016 to help spread understanding of dementia among children. She was compelled to create this resource following her family’s own experience with her mother’s early-onset dementia. At that time, there simply weren’t many books available to explain dementia to her young children.
Since its publication, her book has won several awards and has been translated into multiple languages. In 2018, she collaborated with dementia care expert, Jaclyn Guenette, to launch another picture book about dementia, I Smile For Grandpa. Both of Kathryn’s children’s books encourage children to remain connected with family members that have dementia and support the Alzheimer Society of Canada with every purchase.
Currently, Kathryn is also a member of the management team running AlzAuthors.com, the internet's most comprehensive collection of written resources about Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.

Jason Le Grange had to take the City of Cape Town to their “third party” Ombudsman as they threatened to cut off his water and made him pay R9000 for a faulty meter they had installed. He “won” and they still refused to pay him back the money he had to pay for their error otherwise they were cutting his services off.
"The Ombudsman however, is not real nor functional as they have not been able to get the City of Cape Town to pay me back any money and take responsibility for what has happened. An Ombudsman is supposed to be functional to have require action from the parties involved and hold the parties accountable. This is not the case. I have already contacted a private university who after evaluating the evidence says this is a case study on a faux-Ombudsman that makes the City of Cape Town look like they have a third, objective party, but who don’t see any actions taken by them for unaccountable behavior and practice. "
"The Ombudsman said it is your job to fill in the refund form and wait 6-8 weeks for it. So no parties held accountable."

Jean Lee - Alzheimer’s Daughter
While working full time as a 3rd grade teacher, both of Lee’s parents were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease on the same day. Although she never considered writing a book, the experience of balancing roles of teacher and caregiver poured out in her first book, a memoir, Alzheimer’s Daughter.
Through that experience, Lee connected with other authors of Alzheimer’s books and co-founded AlzAuthors.com. Their goal is to seek authors of best-selling Alzheimer’s books and ask those authors to write 500-word posts about the story behind their stories. After two years, they are over 170 voices strong, ending the silence and stigma of the disease.
Jean Lee lives with her husband in small-town Ohio, twenty minutes from anything. Although she worked full time while her parents were ill, she is now retired after twenty-two years of teaching elementary school. Her children are married with children of their own. Five grandchildren are her greatest blessings.

Anthills and Airfields. This story describes an incident that occurred in which my Eland became trapped on an anthill during an assault on an airfield. Interlocking Arcs of Fire. I have never finished this poem which is still very rough around the edges, but it describes an ambush. The disjointedness can be seen as symptomatic of such events when bits and pieces flash by. Click here to download the PDF.
Thousand Yard Stare. This is probably one of the most haunting experiences I have ever had. It relates to the first necklacing incident that I ever witnessed, and it describes the moment that I detached emotionally from what was happening around me. Since writing this story, many former soldiers and policemen that were deployed in the so-called Township Wars of the 1980's and early 1990's, have said that it accurately captures their own experiences. Tina O’Hailey:
Absolute Darkness
Tina O'Hailey is a professor in animation, visual effects, and game programming.
She is also a caver and occasional mapper of grim, wet, twisty caves (if she owes a friend a favor or loses a bet).
Her passion is to be secluded on a mountain and to write whilst surrounded by small, furry dogs and hot coffee. Tina has even been struck by lightning once.
She served as an artistic trainer for Walt Disney Feature Animation, Dreamworks and Electronic Arts.
Tina has written text books on animation and her debut novel is Absolute Darkness.

About the book
Samuel John Frederick Platt was born two months prematurely and rushed into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It soon became apparent that the new-born had a rare disease confounding specialists and sending his parents, Melissa and Fred Platt on an emotional roller-coaster ride as his condition was misdiagnosed several times.
His distraught parents stood by Sam’s side and advocated for his needs, whilst feeling ignored by some of the health care professionals assigned to Sam’s care. Sam’s parents managed to get a second opinion and secured a transfer from the Johannesburg hospital that Sam had been in for over a year to a hospital in Cape Town. Sam received the proper diagnosis and started to make small yet significant steps to recovery. Just when Sam was about to be given the all clear to go home, after spending fifteen and a half months in ICU, he died.
Fred Platt writes honestly about his experiences as Sam’s dad. Fred shares the 7 lessons he learnt during this darkest period of his life which have fundamentally changed his perspective on everything, being human, business and relationships.
Sam’s legacy lives on.
In honour of Sam’s life, a charitable Trust, Footprints4Sam has been established. With the aim of ensuring that the highest standard and corporate governance is applied to preserve the legacy of Samuel John Frederick Platt, the Trust focuses on ensuring that no child or family will have to endure the challenges that Sam faced.
