It’s all about what you hold onto when life gets hard. Really, diving deeper into God’s word is preparation for hard times that James tells us are coming!! If you are not prepared, you’re going to get ROCKED with life’s ups and downs.
In the sermon this weekend I’m reading a small collection of bible figures who gave something up and got something in return from God. Essetially, they traded, they “let go” to gain something better. It’s not a comprehensive list, but in every situation, the thing they received far out weighed what they let go. He gave them something else in return that was far better. You always win when you let go of something for God.

The best list of those who practiced biblical faith comes from Hebrews chapter 11. We are just finishing up the NFL Hall of Fame inductions (two broncos this year I might add). The people in Hebrews Chapter 11 had less information that US to know who God was and what his intentions are? Rahab, Abraham, Joseph are a few that I think had WAY less than what we have to base a logical, fact filled and resolute decision on following Christ. Can you think of some things we have to go on in making a decision for Jesus in our lives? It is from the examples of these “Hall of FAITH” members that we get a biblical definition of what real faith in action looks like:

“Faith: Trusting that Jesus is who He said He is and that He does what He said He would do”

I know I do these rants sometimes in church with all these Bible names, I’m going kind of fast, in a spoken word, kinda metered rap kind of way. Perhaps you see other people saying, “YEAH!! That’s what I’m talking about!” and you don’t get it. It’s deeply moving because it’s a ‘Hebrews 11’ type of worship to the Faithfulness of God towards us.

Not that God “Believes” in us. He’s not saying, “You Can Do It”. He is in fact saying, I am LOYAL to you, even when you are NOT loyal to me. Like a faithful spouse.
For this week’s Deeper Dive we have a vivid picture from God to help us understand HIS Faithfulness better.

This story is the found in Hosea. God uses the picture of an unfaithful spouse to help us see how our sin (cheating on Him) actually looks.

There are two major things in this “Title” to Marks Gospel.
First Thing: Jesus is the ONLY good news. He is the Ultimate Good News. Mark is telling all of Rome, a conquering nation like none the world has seen before, that he has found some good news that makes all of their attempts at good news look like child’s play.
The Second Thing: Jesus, unlike all the conquering generals of the day and emperors who claimed to be ‘divine’ REALLY is the SON of God. Mark will quickly go about proving these bold statements.

Technically, these are very dangerous things to say. They were politically dangerous in Mark’s time and have things really changed in our time? Socially politically danger is something we know more about than real life-threatening persecution. Regardless, anything we hold above Christ, our life or social standing, can become an idol.

So again, I would ask the important question, “have we tamed Jesus?” The best antidote or medicine is to survey who Jesus is REALLY and compare that reality of who Christ is with our made-up versions.

If we are looking at the Gospel this week; and I do want to be a voice that warns you to have your filter up out there, people are painting pictures of Jesus. Are they true? Real? We looked at some things that Jesus did, or pictures of Jesus, in a rant this weekend on stage. What are some other BOLD things that Jesus would say?

The idea of "The Good Life" was unfathomable in the truest sense of the word. Most people couldn't think of (fathom) what The Good Life would even look like. The reality of the Kingdom that Jesus was ushering in was a truth they were not ready for. We all had to see it play out. For most, of the first who heard of The Good Life He offered, life wasn’t good. It just wasn’t. They were under oppressive rulers. They had no bright future. Hopelessness. That may even be true for you. This Is Your Time.

Jesus came promising the good life. It was a sight to take in no doubt. The tumultuous social barriers He was destroying brought the crowds no doubt. He said the most awkward things to the people in charge. The important people who ran the religion of the day pretty much had to take it on the chin as Jesus tore down their fake towers of outward perfection.

There is no greater moment of table turning than Matthew 5:20. Jesus came promising a new and better kind of life. Many people had given up on eternal life. How could they compete? The harshest things Jesus ever said were to a specific group of people that are mentioned in this Core 52 Text today. There are six things that Jesus goes on to in chapter 5 to discuss in a deeper way. This is all a part of Jesus telling people what the Kingdom of Heaven is like and how they need to react and respond to participate in the kingdom of Heaven. It’s clear that Jesus isn’t changing the law, he is in fact helping people understand the that laws in the Old Testament express the will of God. God’s will never changes and Jesus is the living proof of ‘how to live the law perfectly’. Jesus lets us know right away that obedience to the law starts on the inside first. Our hearts matter. The topics that Jesus covers are: Anger, Lust, Divorce, Oaths, Retaliation, and Loving Enemies.

As we look at The Good Life we will pull a few more texts in that help us truly find a way to The Good Life the way God intends.

My Father-In-Law recently led his small group through a long book study of what Heaven is REALLY like. Over the past couple of years Dad and I have had many conversations from Ezekiel, Isaiah and John’s Revelation of Heaven on the Island of Patmos. It’s crazy how accurate of a view we really have. It seems like God wants us to have a clear goal, view and idea of just how awesome Heaven is going to be. The boos is called
“Heaven” by Randy Alcorn!

The enemy is going to try and get our eyes off the thing we are running towards. The enemy will try to get us to chase other things and forget about the prize that Jesus has called us to concentrate on.

We have to ask ourselves:
What are we waiting on REALLY?
Chances are that some other ‘lesser’ thing has been put in front of us to strive for.
Since our Perception of Heaven Matters so greatly we need to do some work to tune up our knowledge of what Heaven will really be like!
These two steps will help us keep the goal of Heaven as our true anchor in life.

So if we are looking at the Son of God teaching us how to pray in the New Testament this week I think it would be a good idea to look at two of the most famous prayers recited during the times of Christ. What tradition was Jesus adding to? What had people prayed most commonly before?

Ever go to a nice place with someone and they order chicken strips? I’m not talking about McDonalds but more like a nice steak or seafood place I always ask them if they want crayons for their placemat (IN JOKING!!) There is something to be said for a refined pallet.

I mentioned two other books this weekend in the messages. One was a church leadership book I am reading this week called “Canoeing in the Mountains by Tod Bolsinger from Fuller Theological Seminary in CA.: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory.

I also mentioned another book that shaped my ideology on worship services over twenty years ago when much of North America was involved in the ‘worship relevancy wars’ that shaped many of our churches in the Restoration Movement today.

Weekly Challenge

Have a communion meal this week with some fellow believers and intentionally talk about Jesus the whole meal. Practice remembering Him during your meal. Talk about his ministry on earth in the gospels. Then talk about what He is doing now. Give everyone a chance to testify to what God is doing in their life RIGHT NOW. This embodies the idea of 1 Corinthians 11:26 more than anything! Every person around the table, lifting up a cup and “proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”

Deeper Dive
The Teaching series we are in is "These Things I Leave You: Prayer"

So if we are looking at the Son of God teaching us how to pray in the New Testament this week I think it would be a good idea to look at two of the most famous prayers recited during the times of Christ. What tradition was Jesus adding to? What had people prayed most commonly before?
