Liza adds, “When we started making music and performing together, we knew we were onto something. It was like the universe aligned, putting us in each other’s paths. We quickly developed a deep affection and admiration for each other as contemporaries in the NYC scene.”

The magic moment that sealed their collaboration happened at a club called Berlin, where Liza had a residency. This is an interview with musicians Paul Henry and Laura Shaffer of the duo Lolo & Pops. They have been singing their quirky mix of originals and covers in Sonoma County since 2007.

Both are native Californians, although Pops lived on the East Coast for some time, going to music schools, among other things. They first got together romantically in the late 90s, then musically when they started singing together to put their kids to sleep. This resulted in their first project, "Bound For Dreamland," a CD of lullabies based on music from the Sacred Harp. The kids are grown up, so they finally have the time to share some of the songs they've written over the years.

In addition to being a respected musician, Brian Byrnes is also a noted photographer, and his work graces the cover of a Jimi Hendrix album. Six weeks before Hendrix died in London in September 1970, Brian Byrnes caught his penultimate United States concerts, a couple of free outdoor shows on a hastily erected stage in a livestock pasture below the Haleakala volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Two color photos he shot that day are on the front and back covers of a new album, “Live in Maui,” released on vinyl and as a boxed set of CDs. Other shots of his are all over the liner notes and the CD booklet and were also used in a feature-length documentary, “Music, Money Madness … Jimi Hendrix in Maui,” released on Blu-ray. Byrnes is shown in the film, saying seeing Hendrix “was like a gift from God for me.”

When a jazz musician rolls into Denver for a performance, it's not often that a documentary film and immersive art exhibition await them. But jazz-great Eddie Henderson is no ordinary musician, nor has he led an ordinary life.

A few hours before Henderson played a two-show set at Denver’s premier jazz venue, Dazzle, an exhibit called Time and Spaces: The Life of Eddie Henderson opened to the public at the CU Denver Experience Gallery in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. It features archival photos, one of Henderson’s trumpets, and memorabilia, including a pair of skates he wore as a professional figure skater.

There was also a room to view a twenty-minute clip of the documentary Dr. Eddie Henderson: Uncommon Genius. The film examines the 83-year-old musician’s life, including how he overcame racial barriers and broke into fields that underrepresented Black men. In the 1960s, he became a professional figure skater and a practicing medical doctor. The documentary by Michelle Carpenter will screen at film festivals nationwide and air on PBS in February.

After playing the blues for the first time in his Middle School Jazz band, Sean Applebee was in awe at the sensation of spiritual healing he had never experienced before. From this moment forward, Sean sought to learn everything he could about what he had experienced, however he still struggled to find an answer.

Eventually, Sean met world-renowned trumpeter Brad Goode at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Summer Jazz Camp when he was seventeen. The sheer amount of intention and spirituality that each musician put into their playing brought Sean so much joy that he could not stop singing every song after each performance. The music brought a whole new dimension of color and wonder to his life beyond anything experiments and calculations could quantify.

Show notes: One of the most highly regarded jazz drummers today, Joe is known for his blazing speed, precision, musical, and melodic playing.

Born in South Hadley, Massachusetts, in 1968, Joe grew up in a musical family; his father was a music educator, and he has four older brothers, two of whom became professional musicians.

He studied with Alan Dawson and Arthur Taylor prior to attending and graduating from William Patterson College in New Jersey in 1994, where he began playing with saxophonist Eric Alexander and guitarist Peter Bernstein.

Upon moving to New York City, he led the weekend jazz combos at Augie’s (now Smoke Jazz & Supper Club). He performed with Junior Cook, Cecil Payne, John Ore, Big John Patton, Harold Mabern, Eddie Henderson, John Jenkins, and his brothers, John and James.

Joseph’s career includes recording over 100 CDs as leader and side-man, jazz festivals, and world tours with Pharaoh Sanders, Horace Silver, Harold Mabern, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Diana Krall, Benny Golson, George Coleman, Johnny Griffin, Lou Donaldson, Benny Green, Barry Harris, Curtis Fuller to name a few.

He was the drummer for the late McCoy Tyner, a member of the late Pharaoh Sanders Quartet, and the late Harold Mabern Trio, and is a founding member of the renowned One for All Quintet.

Sarah Hanahan is an up-and-coming jazz saxophonist in New York City. Sarah is a graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music, where she received her Bachelor's degree in 2019, as well as The Juilliard School, where she received her master's degree in 2022. Daruma is a fresh, new, contemporary jazz project featuring original music by some of Denver’s finest young talent. Their sound takes audiences from deep grooves to intimate ballads to Coltrane-inspired swing. Daruma reinterprets the jazz aesthetic for the 21st century and crosses it with progressive rock, film music, and neo-soul in a genre-bending original sound.

Ensemble members have performed with leading voices in contemporary music, ranging from Billy Childs, Rufus Reid, and Tia Fuller to the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Big Gigantic. A go-to studio session musician to boot, Bodine is regularly recruited for all sorts of recording work. Mike Marlier has performed and recorded with countless artists and musicians, including Dave Grusin, Nelson Rangell, Benny Golson, Bobby Shew, Rob Mullins, the Neophonic Jazz Orchestra, Lee Ritenour, and Stanley Jordan. He is the staff drummer at the annual Conference on World Affairs at CU and Mile Hi Church in Lakewood. Marlier was the featured drummer at the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert presented by the Gift of Jazz in 2009 and presented a clinic and masterclass at a Gospel Chops seminar in Taipei, Taiwan, in 2014.

Eric Gunnison has worked extensively with trumpeter Ron Miles, with whom he has toured and recorded since 1997, including appearing as a clinician and pianist with Miles’s quartet at the 1st Annual Thailand Jazz Conference and the Bangkok Jazz Festival in 2009. Gunnison has also been the pianist and a composer/arranger for the cooperative band Convergence, one of Denver’s leading jazz ensembles, since 1991. In addition to releasing several recordings, Convergence hosts a monthly series of appearances with special guest jazz artists at Denver’s premier jazz club Dazzle that, since February 2010, has featured Roberta Gambarini, Rene Marie, Randy Brecker, Jim McNeely, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, Wallace Roney, and Bobby Watson among others.

A jazz musician since the 1970s, Keith Oxman, toured with the Buddy Rich big band in 1986 and has played with artists including Art Blakey, Sonny Stitt, Red Holloway, Pete Christlieb, Jack McDuff, Phil Woods, Dave Brubeck, Jon Hendricks, Pete Christlieb, Louis Bellson, Pearl Bailey, The Temptations and The Fifth Dimension. He has eleven CDs on the Capri Records label. Two of his CDs were with John Coltrane’s trombonist Curtis Fuller, one with liner notes written by Benny Golson. Keith is also a sideman on two of Curtis Fuller’s CDs and a CD by Charles McPherson, and he has been a sideman on other recordings that have come out commercially but are not on the Capri label. His 2020 CD release with Houston Person, Two Cigarettes In The Dark (liner notes by Charles McPherson), was widely reviewed and was on the National Top 50 Jazz Week Chart for over two months. It received a 4-star review in the June 2020 issue of DownBeat magazine.

After college, he sang on two cruise ships with the a cappella group "Oceans F"ur." He joined Straight No Chaser in 2009 and was a part of SNC's first PBS special, "Live in "New York." He says he's been very blessed to do this for a living and can't thank the fans enough for their support.

In this episode of Backstage Jazz, musician Matt Smiley shares a few tracks with us from his upcoming double CD.

Matt Smiley is a bassist, composer, and educator who has performed in various musical settings over the last fifteen years. He has a bachelor’s degree in music industry with a jazz studies minor from James Madison University and a Master of Music in jazz studies from the University of Northern Colorado.

An avid and enthusiastic musician, Smiley has performed nationally and internationally at universities nationwide and the Montreux, North Sea, and Montreal Jazz Festivals.

Currently, Matt resides in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he plays jazz weekly with the Subterraneans at Ace Gillett’s. He has recently performed with legendary jazz musicians Terrell Stafford and Greg Osby and worked with composer Alvin Lucier. Matt has assisted Dr. Paul Elwood with the University of Northern Colorado’s Open Space Music Festival for the last five years and worked with festival artists Stephen Drury, Christian Wolff, and Jean-Claude Risset.

Matt released Quartet Art on the Dazzle label in 2011, featuring David Pope on saxophone. Peaceful Contact Proved Elusive, with guitarist Alex Nauman, followed in 2014 as a limited-edition vinyl. Matt is featured on several Dazzle releases by artists Josh Quinlan, Annie Booth, and Ryan Fourt.

Neil Bridge is a legendary Jazz Piano player, composer, arranger, band leader, musical director, and former DPS music educator. Throughout his illustrious career, he has accompanied Mel Torme, Anita O’Day, Nancy Wilson, Dakota Staton, Johnny Smith, The Mills Brothers, Clark Terry, Sonny Stitt, and many more. He is well known for accompanying Johnny Smith (legendary world-class guitar player) for 30 years.

Karen Lee is currently fulfilling her passion for singing. Her dreams came true, and she finally fulfilled her lifetime wishes of singing professionally. Karen explains, “ I have been enrolled in the “N.B.A.O.M.,” for 30 glorious years. It’s the “Neil Bridge Academy Of Music!”

For over 30 years, Purnell Steen and the Five Points Ambassadors have been dedicated to preserving and playing the Jazz and Blues music of Denver's legendary Five Points neighborhood. In the special edition of Backstage Jazz, Steen pays tribute to music icon Charles “Charlie” Burrell in preparation for his 103rd birthday.

Burrell is a classical and jazz bass player and best known for being the first African American to be signed to a full-time contract in a major symphony orchestra in the United States. He is often called "the Jackie Robinson of Classical Music for this accomplishment.

He also performed with the San Francisco Symphony and later became a prominent figure in the Five Points jazz scene of Denver, sharing stages with the likes of Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, and Duke Ellington.

One of the most well-received musicians of her generation, composer and arranger Chie Imaizumi, has won many awards as an ambitious and active voice in the jazz community. She received the Herb Pomeroy Award, The Rocky Mountain Jazz Artist of the Year, and was recognized by DownBeat Critics Poll as a "Rising Star Composer & Arranger."

Tenia Nelson performs regularly at jazz venues in the Denver metro area, including Dazzle and Nocturne. Nelson is a freelance music artist and plays all types of music. She co-led a well-known Denver-based jazz group, Spherio, which focuses on arranging and playing the music of Thelonious Sphere Monk (Tenia Nelson, keys; Brendan O' Donoghue, bass; and Andreas Schmid, drums). Since forming his first jazz group at age 16, Spencer Zweifel has become a regular member of the Colorado music scene. Show Notes: The Cutthroat Brothers are a garage-rock band with a swampy blues edge and a psychobilly vibe, thanks in part to Jason Cutthroat’s gritty guitar sound and gargled-with-gravel vocals. The other half of the duo is drummer Donny Paycheck. Both are barbers. Donny’s shop is in Tacoma, and Jason works in Kona. They still manage to rehearse and record these days despite the pandemic. After a two-year hiatus, Beat-Lele, the Oahu-based Beatles tribute band, returned to the Big Island for two performances at the Kahilu Theatre with shows on December 2-3.

Beat-Lele’s humble beginnings date back ten years ago when they were performing as Day in The Life at Minato’s restaurant in Honolulu. They performed without costumes or mop-top wigs, and their focus was strictly on getting the music to sound like the original records.

In 2017, the band transitioned from electric guitars and a drum kit to an acoustic ukulele sound with an island twist. Beat-Lele remains the only Beatles tribute band within this niche.

After a three-month gap, the Kahilu Theatre re-opened its doors to live audiences, and last Friday’s third installment of the Song Circle series proved once again that we have some exceptional performers who deserve broader attention.

With his musical roots in the Austin/Nashville music scene, Don May has been developing a traditional singers-in-the-round show since April, and it keeps getting better. These intimate performances allow each musician to share details about their songwriting that are usually skipped in a noisy club setting.

In addition to May’s country-tinged tunes, this time, he featured singer-songwriters Kelly Hyde (Hawi) and Kimberly June (Kona) for an 80-minute acoustic set.

Although Josh Tatofi’s show last Saturday was livestreamed, the real excitement was being a part of the energetic crowd that attended his concert at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort. Show notes: Dirty Cello started eight years ago when Rebecca Roudman, a tenured member of both the Oakland and Santa Rosa symphony orchestras, met guitarist Jason Eckl while attending college. He’s now her husband. Dirty Cello has since toured China, Italy, and even Iceland, all while paying their musical dues along the way.

In this episode, Roudman talks about several unusual shows the band played during the past nine including a nudist colony, serenading animals at the zoo, and appearing in a commercial about being productive during the time of Covid-19 with Hangover actor Ken Jeung.

Show Notes: Widely praised for his mastery of the Hawaiian slack-key guitar, Oahu singer/songwriter Makana built a reputation around the turn of the millennium for his dynamic playing style that infuses indigenous guitar styles with rock, blues, and world music. Following his award-winning 1999 debut, he delivered a string of solo albums that mixed traditional slack-key instrumentals with original songs, later gaining wider notice for his contributions to the Grammy-nominated collections Hawaiian Slack Key Kings I & II as well as the soundtrack to the film The Descendants.

Show Notes: Folk music icon Tom Paxton's music career spans more than sixty years. In 2009, Paxton received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2019 he released his 65th album Live! with The Don Juans.

Paxton, now 82, has met everyone from Pete Seeger to Bob Dylan, and many musicians have covered his music. When I reviewed his April 2015 Berkeley concert, he announced he was done with touring, but that was a short-lived idea and he returned to the road shortly thereafter.

This podcast bonus episode features an interview I did with Tom on October 1, 2020, and focuses on his upcoming livestream concert with The Don Juans on October 5, 2020 (ticket info below). Additionally, I asked him about the backstory for two of his classic originals “Ramblin’ Boy” and “Did You Hear About John Hurt.”

Brother Noland is a musician and author, known chiefly as a performer of Hawaiian music and slack-key guitar. Noland was raised in a musical family; his mother and brother were hula dancers, and he began playing music in clubs while still a teenager in the 1960s. This interview was recorded on July 12, 2020, and features two songs from his Kahilu Theatre benefit concert at the Mauna Lani Resort.

In 1987, Robert and his brother Richard formed The Savery Brothers, a six-piece group specializing in old-style country-Western music playing gritty honky-tonks.
