She took a walking tour with local guide Misha Spanner, who brought the island's past to life. "It's amazing how many different historic monuments. I think they have the second oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere," Katherine notes. The tour also touched on the island's connection to the American Revolution and its once-thriving role as a major trading hub.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Statia's history is the legend of the blue beads. These beads were once used as currency during slavery times, and when slavery was abolished, they were thrown into the sea. Legend has it that if you find a blue bead on the island, you're destined to return. This story perfectly encapsulates the mystical allure of Statia and the deep connection many visitors feel to the island.
Katherine was particularly impressed by the warmth and pride of the local people. Despite its small size, Statia is home to a diverse population representing over 20 nationalities. Jamie Edwards and her family, 13 in all, spent two weeks in Croatia (August 2021). It's her third trip to what's quickly turned into a vacation hotspot, especially for A-listers such as Beyonce and Jay Z, Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie, Bono, Neil Patrick Harris, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart to name a few. So what make's Croatia so special? We're going to answer that in this podcast.
Jamie and her family planned a rather unique trip that included both land and sea. They spent the first week at Villa Barbara on the Istrian Peninsula---a heart-shaped piece of land in northwest Croatia near the borders of Slovenia and Italy. The villa features six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. And oh, the amenities; tennis and basketball courts, a golf range, ping pong, foosball, billiards, and bicycles. By the way the pool and hot tub are a pretty good bet for the less active among us. The villa is a short drive to local villages to enjoy the culture and local cuisine.
Their second week was spent on a gulet exploring the spectacular islands of Croatia while worshiping both sun and sea. The Gulet Perla is about 100 feet in length and features seven bedrooms all with their own private en-suite bathroom. Jamie's came with a chef who prepared some sumptuous meals morning, noon and night. Swimming, island exploration and spectacular sunsets are just the beginning of life at sea.

The country is an outdoor adventure paradise. Bungy jumping from one of New Zealand's highest bridges to Skyjumping some 630 feet off the Skytower in Auckland, Katherine did that and more. She only has two regrets---she couldn't stay longer and she didn't get to try Heli-hiking on New Zealand's South Island due to inclement weather. She did test her mettle with a little hiking and driving windy mountain roads on the left---not for the faint of heart if you are used to driving on the right. And guess what? She made this journey to New Zealand by herself. Oh, and that mountain driving, Katherine tells us she went several hours without seeing a single person on the road.

Loan (pronounced Lo' Ann) Lake visited Italy for the first time as a graduate student. From Milan, Naples, Venice and Rome to Sicily, Loan explored Italy like few have. When we asked her what she enjoyed most about the country - everything, she said. Even with her love of "everything" Italy, Loan reserved a special place in her heart for one often overlooked locale within Italy, the island of Sicily. She said it reminded her in a way of her native Caribbean, in particular St Thomas---narrow hillside roads, Bougainvillea flowers, the American Jazz in the Sicilian nightclubs, and its African influences that remain from conquests 300 years earlier.

How many of us would have the courage to quit our jobs, buy a sailboat that appeared to have seen its better days and embark on life at sea with zero experience. Our guests Beau and Brandy have done just that. Now six years later they wouldn't have it any other way.
The year was 2016. They arrived in Florida with a vision and a lot of faith. Upon arrival they bought a 35-foot sailboat for $2,000. For the next 18 months they upgraded and repaired their new floating home. Much of the work performed by Beau and Brandy themselves. They learned by watching online videos, reading and consulting with whoever could provide the necessary assistance.
Once their floating palace was sea worthy it was time to learn how to sail. Their first solo journey to The Bahamas, fraught with a few dangers for newbies, let them both know "we got this." They've been sailing the Caribbean paradise ever since, while planning new adventures to the South Pacific. We caught up with the couple in St. Eustatius to discuss their lives at sea---a life they have no intention of giving up anytime soon.
