This is a recording of a webinar given on the 7th April 2020. I strongly recommend you find the time to watch this on YouTube https://youtu.be/jm9AY_bt4Uk
Phil puts his old firefighters hat on and discusses with us the introduction of the regulations regarding the measures to prevent premature collapse of wiring systems.
We'll discuss the history which caused the regulation, the current applications and what its actually like to be in an installation with premature collapsed cabling.

We get a lot of inquiries with regards to the 2396 design qualification and many people are failing the exam when they've gone to other training providers.
So Phil and I wanted to discuss the qualification and go through the chief examiners reports to see what the common problems are.
This is a recording of a webinar given on 2nd April 2020.
In this webinar, Phil and I discuss inspection and testing from both perspectives in the classroom and out in the sector. We take a lot of comments from the great chat amongst the attendees and discuss them. To see any more upcoming webinars go to:

It's time I bring my first guest on to the podcast and there is no one better than my old man, Phil Watts. In this podcast we get to know a bit about how he joined the electrical industry and some of his opinions on the training sector.
There will be more podcasts coming up with Phil including:
BS 7909 Inspection and testing Part P Fire - premature collapse, a station commanders perspective

When carrying out inspection and testing work it is easy to be persuaded into just carrying out the necessary tests required to fill in all those lovely little boxes on your certification modelled to BS 7671.
However there are some tests which we should always be considering which are not given in the BS 7671 model, but are given in the BS 7909 model.. why is this and why is it so important that we always consider it?
Well I had an example of this with a client just recently so thought now would be a good time to bring it up.

It's been a couple of months break while I have enjoyed taking part with the e5 group on building up our podcast together, but it is time to put some work back into the SparkyNinja one.
The e5 podcast will carry on, but there is so much to talk about from a training and development perspective and the SparkyNinja journey that both podcasts are going to be full of information.
Be sure to catch the e5 podcast on all platforms as well.
When I went to a recent Elex I spoke with the people on the CONNEXBOX stall to talk about how they have innovated on methods for the newer small profile Wago devices to fit within their existing and upcoming WAGOBOX.
In this video I briefly discuss the issue and show what CONNEXBOX have done to assit with this - this video is to raise awareness in case you are not aware of these inserts that CONNEXBOX provide, in which case you may risk non compliance with BS 7671.

I attended an Arc Flash conference recently and it got me thinking about how well are we truly assessing our risks with live work and is there something we may not be considering that we should?

With the re-write of a Section of the Wiring Regulation there is a lot of talk about AC RCDs and if they really are any use any more?
Yet the Wiring Regulations says that they are suitable for general use?
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THESE OPINIONS ARE MY OWN AND NOT THAT OF ANY ORGANISATION/GROUP I AM AFFILIATED WITH.

When designing an electrical installation it is important to ensure recognition and compliance with any manufacturers criteria within the design. In this podcast I go through some design information required with Hager devices that must be considered to assure their operating characteristics are as intended with your design.
I'm delivering a Wiring Regulations course and one of the candidates has completed his City and Guilds 2357, his NVQ Level 3 portfolio and his AM2, yet he confessed today that throughout his training and apprenticeship that he never handled, terminated or even saw a piece of steel conduit, steel trunking or steel cable tray whilst on his journey to becoming a qualified electrician..
Is this a sign of the times with electrical training as an industry?
JIB just released an article trying to answer some questions that have been raised with regards to their JIB Gold card and the differences between a 'Registered Electrician' and a normal Go.d card holder.
So we received the announcement today for the proposed work on the first amendment of BS 7671. Here I talk through the announcement to give ourselves a little preview on what we can expect to happen with the future of the British Standard.
The government announced this week a response to the information provided to them from a workgroup consultation following proposed changes in legislation requiring mandatory periodic inspection and testing to be carried out on at private rented accommodation. In this podcast I talk through and comment on the debate in the house of lords that drove this change and what changes I think that this will make.
Just a quick reminder guys about the Elex exhibition at Ally Pally today and tomorrow - also don't forget to check out #tradestalklive
The 18th edition training group on my SparkyNinja Facebook page has just reached 1000 members - this is a great example of how electricians and learners can work together and develop themselves.
I returned to Wales last week to deliver another 1 day update course for the Wiring Regulations. Was all the advice and information I asked the last group passed forward and delivered to these guys to prepare them more effectively?
I noticed an electrician this week using LinkedIn as a job searching and moaning site so thought I would give him some advice to adjust his profile so potential employers would want to engage with him.
So in today's news we saw video footage of a worker driving a mini digger through the front door of a newly furbished Travelodge Hotel in Liverpool. It looks like the dispute was over the worker not being paid is wages to the amount of £600. In this podcast I briefly mention the importance of thinking things through and maybe considering the benefits of approaching a union or similar with your pay disputes.
Having just done a second stream on YouTube one of the things discussed was the clients driving down the prices of the inspection and testing. In this podcast I discuss why you shouldn't lower your prices.
Yesterday was a long day for me. I had to drive hundreds of miles to an agreed training event in which the candidates were not informed properly on the course. So what did I do..
Let's talk about the exam. It appears from feedback via twitter and Facebook that some training companies are making candidates remove all of their tabs that they place while undertaking the training, one college actually cut them plush with the page.
Whilst some others allow full on practice question papers to be left with them during their exams.
What are the actual requirements for this?
What is the PASS mark?
Well here I talk through the City and Guilds documentation which is the guideline for all training companies delivering this course within their enrolment.
In this episode I want to talk about a new Regulation in the Wiring Regulations which finally introduces the need to consider the varying types of RCD. I explain why this is something that we should have been considering years and give a practical example of why something as simple as a washing machine may result in an RCD not operating properly if it is protected by the 'off the shelf' type AC RCD.
Another device that has created many questions is the AFDD. It's a new device with a very interesting background. In this episode I talk a little bit about the Regulations covering this device and how it's application is being interpreted.
There appear to be many questions going around as to whether we now should be installing SPD's in all electrical installations with the 18th edition now being in effect.
In this episode I offer a quick overview and opinion on the rewritten Regulations.
Welcome to the SparkyNinja podcast. In this introduction episode I just wanted to say welcome, introduce myself and let you know why the podcast is here.
Moving forward this podcast will contain my rawest opinions on all things electrical industry and training related.
