We were so happy to have Mark and Debbie back to visit and share their story of moving to Mexico to follow God's calling for them. The theme of their message this Sunday was Embracing Discomfort.Sometimes we have a false belief that God wouldn't want us to be uncomfortable or wouldn't be leading us down the path blocked by obstacles. But God never promises us an easy life.

This week, we heard from Jono on the parable of the Sower and the Seed (Matthew 13). He shared that in order to really hear what God is saying to us through scripture, we have to be willing to dialogue with him. We have to engage with the text and seek a deeper understanding.Jesus isn’t interested in people who only want a surface level relationship with him. He wants intimacy and discussion.

Giving forgiveness isn't easy. But it is the only way to be able to receive forgiveness from God. For Father's Day, Ian brings us a special message on the Father's love. The primary image of our relationship with God in the New Testament is God as our Father. God wants us to be in relationship with him because we need him - not because he needs us. When he seeks to get our attention, it is often because we really need his attention. But, we can't always stay on top of the mountains in God's presence because it's too much for us to handle. Things in our lives will cause us to experience a disconnect; that is what many call "the dark night of the soul."

What does the Ascension mean for us as believers? So often, we stop the Easter story at the Resurrection, but the Ascension also has major implications on how we live and on our eternity. For Palm Sunday, we are looking at Jesus' statement that he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. When Thomas asked how to get to where Jesus was going, Jesus said, "I am the way." Much like Jesus' journey into Jerusalem, our journey through life may not always be glorious or easy, but if we follow Jesus as the way, we can rest assured in the hope of our destination.

When Jesus said, "I am the Good Shepherd," he was differentiating himself from those who were shepherding his people, Israel (and from those who shepherd us today). But he was also pointing out an important aspect of our relationship to him: in order to be under his care, we have to be willing to be under his ownership and direction.

We're starting a new series entitled, "Epic: Tales from the Old Testament," looking at obscure or lesser-known stories from the Old Testament and what they have to teach us (after all, they were included in scripture for a reason). First up, Ahren discusses the healing of Naaman in 1 Kings 5:1-19.

Part 4 of our Advent series is Emmanuel: God with us in the field. Looking at the story of the shepherds who first received the announcement of Jesus' birth, Ahren reminds us that our place of work should be dedicated to God, and our gifts are our sacrifices to Him. How do you respond to this reality?

View Details

The third part of our Advent series is Emmanuel: God with us in the seeking. Looking at the story of the wise men, Ahren digs deeper to explore their journey of seeking Jesus, and how God met them in many ways throughout the process, bringing them joy and guiding them to their ultimate destination: a place of worship. We can learn a lot about our own journeys of seeking Christ when we look at the story of the wise men.

In the second week of our Advent series, Ahren speaks on what it means to have God with us in moments of decision. Looking at Joseph's careful and difficult decision about whether to marry Mary (Matthew 1:18-25), we see that sometimes God's way is one we may never have even considered. God's way also isn't always the easiest one. Where might you be tempted to choose a decision that serves you instead of identifying with God's purpose for your life?

View Details

As we come into the advent season, we will be exploring the theme of Emmanuel: God With Us. In this first sermon of the series, Ahren speaks on God with us in the waiting. When there is hurt or brokenness, when we feel lost, abandoned, or hopeless, even then we can trust in the promises of God and the hope of His return. Not only that, but we can count on Him to be with us in the difficult times, even as we wait on His promises.

View Details

No one can live without hope. At a time when our world and our culture feel so lost in hopelessness, Vince reminds us that we have the only true source of hope in Christ's resurrection and his Spirit present within us. And that hope is not only for us, but for the world, as He is coming again to make all things right.

View Details

To continue our series on discipleship, Ahren addresses our societal mistrust of authority (and other people in general) and how this hinders our willingness to let other people speak into our lives. But one important issue this raises is the role and responsibility of Christian leaders and disciplers, and how that should look biblically.

View Details

How are we to find the time and energy needed for true discipleship? It seems that chronic exhaustion has become a normal part of our lives and culture. We're exhausted from living life in a way that God never intended for us to live. God offers something different: true rest, and running without weariness, when we rely on him.

Rooted: Growing Up and Growing Deep, is a sermon series on the importance of discipleship. In this talk, Ahren spoke on the Christ-likeness that defines disciples and how that requires holding a very unique, and often hard-to-accept, tension of truth and compassion, of humility and honesty. It's a balancing act – a narrow path, but one that leads to life.

Every man needs a fatherly voice in their life. For Timothy, that voice was Paul, his spiritual father. In honour of Father's Day, Ahren takes us through an examination of Paul's letters to Timothy to see the godly and fatherly advice that he has for Timothy and, by extension, all Christian men. Through Paul's words, we are reminded of God's hope and purpose for all our lives.

The redemptive power of God is the only force in the universe that can transform your identity. Peter was reminded of this in his conversation with Jesus on the beach. Despite all his grandiose promises to follow Jesus and give his life for the mission, Peter fell short. But when Jesus presented him with this opportunity for redemption, he realized that he couldn't live up to that perfect image he had tried to create for himself. All he could offer was his imperfect love and commitment, trusting that Jesus could use him in greater ways by making him who God intended him to be.

The gospel of John features many stories of Jesus' disciples wrestling with their faith. One of the most memorable accounts is that of Peter denying Jesus during His trial, leading up to the crucifixion. Ahren explains how this story serves as a beautiful reminder that, even when we fail God or refuse to own our faith, He still loves us and is working to lead us to where He wants us to end up. Sometimes we just need to hear the rooster's crow to remind us.

View Details

Doubting Thomas often gets a bad rap. But John uses his story as the linchpin for his entire gospel account, which was carefully written to highlight specific accounts that would persuade readers that Jesus was Christ and the Son of God. Why? Because we all wrestle with ownership of our faith from time to time. And Thomas' story not only reminds us that this is normal, but teaches us how we can deal with our doubts and hesitations.

To help us celebrate Mother's Day, we are joined by special guest speaker Beryl Orok, who is speaking on the important role that God has given to mothers. While acknowledging how difficult this day can be for some, Beryl reminds us of some powerful examples from the Bible of mothers who followed God's leading and example in caring for their families.

This week, we're joined by three special guests: Murray Cornelius (Executive Director for Internatioal Missions at the PAOC), Pastor Munetsi Zowa, and Bishop Never Muparutsa. They share a little bit with us about the impact of international missions, particularly in Zimbabwe, and how they have seen the church growing. Bishop Never then takes some time to remind us about the importance of the mission, using examples from the accounts of the apostles to show us how easy it can be to lose sight of the mission and get caught up in ourselves.

What keeps us from seeing Jesus? That's the question Ahren answers this week while looking at the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). In this passage, we encounter some disciples leaving Jerusalem after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, but what they don't realize is that Jesus is walking alongside them. Why can't they see who he is? There are times or areas in our lives where we are as blind as they were. But the good news is that Jesus meets us in those moments.

Guest speaker David Ruis, Director of Vineyard Canada, shares some words of wisdom and encouragement with us from the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13). In our foolishness, we tend to plan our lives out without ever knowing what's coming ahead. When we do, we can easily become overwhelmed when things change unexpectedly. But, through this parable, God invites us to be wise and to look for His leading. We need to be expectant, alert, and ready to pivot.

After the disciples found the empty tomb, 62 personal encounters with Jesus were recorded. Why does the validity of the accounts of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection matter? Ahren explains what the truth of the Easter story means for our lives and how that should change the way we live.

View Details

For Palm Sunday, Ivan explores the kingly imagery associated with Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem and encourages us to consider the question of how we will respond to His lordship. Are we prepared to let Jesus rule His way in our lives, or do we have our own expectations of what it means for Him to be our Lord and Saviour?

View Details

How do we endure and thrive when we are fundamentally at odds with the world around us? That's the question Jesus answers for His disciples in John 15:18-16:33. In this text, Jesus reminds His followers that there should be something distinct about them–about us. We don't live as the world lives. Our priorities, actions, and words should set us apart. There is grief that comes with that. But God promises to be with us in it.

View Details

Picking up from his last message, Ahren reminds us that the disciples were feeling troubled that Jesus was leaving them, and how He comforted them by explaining that the mission was to go on. In this second part of the chapter, Jesus further addresses their concerns that they would be alone by teaching them about how the Holy Spirit would come to bring them guidance, love, power, comfort, and connection to God until Jesus returns. The Holy Spirit, as Ahren explains, plays a crucial role in fulfilling the Old Covenant.

In the second part of our "Prepared" series, Ivan takes us through John 15:1-11 and helps us understand how the illustration of the vine and the branches reflects a sincere relationship with Jesus: one in which we are present, obedient, persistent, and faithful. When we abide, we are made more like Christ, we grow closer to God, and we bear the fruits of the Spirit in our lives.

The season of Lent is about preparing our hearts for Easter. As we move through this time, we are looking at John 14-17, in which Jesus prepares his disciples for his death and continuing on the mission without him. For the first part of this series, Ahren breaks down John 14:1-6. Here, Jesus begins to address the concerns of his disciples as they realize that they are about to lose their Messiah, and he assures them that he has a mission and a place for them.

"For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength." (1 Corinthians 1:25) Although God's wisdom may seem like foolishness to the world (1 Cor 1:18), our human understanding can never compare. We need spiritual discernment. In this week's talk, Ivan reminds us not to rely on the knowledge and wisdom of this world, but to seek the wisdom of God instead.

What is Lent? Depending on your church background, you may not be too familiar with this practice. This week, Ivan dives into the history of this traditional time of fasting, and the heart behind this season of sacrifice and reflection. By giving something up, we refocus our minds and make space to spend time with God. If, like Ivan, you have never entered into Lent before, you are invited to take part in this time of repentance, renewal, and restoration with us.

Does the Gospel cease being relevant or necessary once we're saved? Absolutely not! No matter how mature our faith, or how many times we've heard it, we will never outgrow our need for the Gospel. Ahren reminds us that, in all circumstances, we must preach the Gospel to ourselves and have it preached to us because it is our anchor and our source of hope.

What is the significance of baptism? In this week's sermon, Ahren talks about the identity piece behind baptism. While baptism is an act of obedience and a public expression of faith, it is also representative of the Christian's choice to lay down their own identity and take up the identity of Christ.

We all have bad days. No matter who you are, you will have faced troubling circumstances. And for many, the scariest part of that is the unknown: not knowing how things will turn out or if we will be okay. But God calls us to continue walking by faith. Whenever God brings us to a place of struggle or uncertainty, we can learn from the example of Job that God is trustworthy, He is in control, and He will deliver us.

We all experience anxieties and stress from time to time. But, in our current climate of cultural anxiety, those feelings can be heightened. As the Church, we are called to be a place of refuge, security, and peace in the midst of this turmoil. Yet, many of us would admit that we have felt these anxieties as well. The problem is not that we have fear, but what we are fearing. God is above it all, and He is the only one whose power is worthy of our fear, awe, and respect.

God does want His people to prosper, but not at the expense of their souls. That's why, in 3 John verse 2, he prays that Gaius would see prosperity in all areas of life in accordance with the prosperity of his soul. Guest speaker Ian Dunn reminds us that we must be worshipping properly if we want to see God's blessings poured out in all areas of our lives. And so, our top priority should always be the prosperity (the growth and wellbeing) of our souls.

If a new year is a blank book, then the question we must ask is, "Who will write our story this year?" It can be easy to focus on what others say about us, or what we want our lives to look like, but the best stories are those that God writes. Ivan's challenge to us for 2023 is to let God have the ultimate control of our lives and to look ahead to where He is leading us. So, will you make Jesus the LORD of your life this year?

In subconscious ways, we, like Herod, perceive Jesus as a threat to our autonomy, but this is the wrong way to see Him. He is our long-awaited Messiah. Some ideas are meant to be struggled with. Some things are never meant to be fully understood. But the divinity of Christ is one thing we should know with certainty. That is why the gospel of Luke begins by explaining that rigorous research and interviews were conducted to confirm what we have been told about Jesus. That is also why, in this third week of Advent, Ahren is taking us through the facts of Jesus' birth to remind us of the significance of His death.

No other god recorded throughout all of history did what our God and Saviour did. On this second Sunday of Advent, Ivan talks about how Jesus came near to us and became like one of us so that we could draw closer in relationship to Him. Jesus lived a life of vulnerability, temptation, grief, and suffering so that we could know that we have a Saviour who understands us and identifies intimately with us.

View Details

The world is in need of a Saviour, whether they know it or not. On this first Sunday of Advent, Ahren speaks on the hope that Jesus can bring to all areas of our life. The place where Jesus lived and began His ministry was full of gloom and darkness, idol worship, and suffering. But Jesus brought light and hope into that gloom. And he does the same with any areas of our lives where we experience gloom, pain, and despair.

The purpose of church isn't just for us to be ministered to, but for us to minister to others. As members of God's kingdom here on earth, we are called to be part of bringing healing, restoration, and salvation. And, in order to do that, we have to choose to fully surrender our lives to God. Only then can the kingdom come in us and through us.

In the third part of the series "But It's Not My Dream," Ivan discusses the importance of humility in our relationship with God, both for individuals and the collective body of Christ. If we want to see change in our lives and grow closer to God, we have to be willing to let go of our pride and place ourselves under God's mission and serve His will instead of our own.

View Details

To be effective in this world, we have to be like Jesus. One person we see in the Bible who mirrors Jesus in many ways is Joseph. In the second part of the sermon series, "But It's Not My Dream: The Heart of a Servant," Ivan looks at the ways that Joseph's life parallels Jesus' and what we can learn from those commonalities.

View Details

As the body of Christ, we (the members of the church) are to be imitators of Christ. The life of the church should closely resemble the life of Jesus. But we've come short over and over again because we have neglected our commitments to one another. We've made church about what we take away from it, rather than what we bring to it. How can we shift our approach away from an individualized experience and towards a community built around caring for and ministering to one another?

View Details

Periods of hardship and change often reveal us to be people of attraction rather than commitment. But when we entered into a covenantal relationship with God, we also entered into a covenantal relationship with the church. As Christians, we are connected to other believers in our church congregation, in our local area, and around the world. What happens when we don't take that commitment seriously?

View Details

Even if we get nothing out of our worship experience, we are still fulfilling our purpose of reflecting God's glory back to Him. It can be easy to approach our church gatherings as activities and ministries that are meant to serve us: to teach us, to make us feel good, to offer us a chance to socialize. And God can certainly use these experiences to reveal Himself to us and draw us closer to Him. But our true motivation for gathering and worshipping should be to glorify God.

Do you know who you REALLY are? Or do you feel insecure? Perhaps you need to stop basing your worth on earthly value systems and start seeing yourself through God's perspective. If you have had a born-again experience, then you hold high status as a child of God! You have been adopted into God's family. You are a chosen child.

What are we leaving for the next generation? As believers, we are called to prepare and equip the next generation of leaders, but so often we don't think about how our lives leave a legacy. Randal, a missionary in Hong Kong, shares how, in his experience, legacy-building is often an informal process that happens as younger Christians watch and interact with us. Thus, we need to be intentional about what we are teaching those around us so that we can plant and water the seeds that God will one day use to produce much fruit.

"Follow me as I follow Christ" was Paul's instruction to the Corinthians. As believers, we should be able to say the same thing to those around us. In order to be used by God, we must be like Christ, and that starts with humility Looking at the story of Joseph, Ivan gives an example from the Old Testament of what it means to have a servant heart.

In part 2 of our "Why Church?" series, Ahren talks about our mission to God. We tend (sometimes unintentionally) to build our churches around the idea of what we, as "consumers," can get out of the experience. But what if our main goal in every ministry was to bring glory to God? We often fail to realize that God desires to have us glorifying Him because it is actually the best thing He can do for us.

As members of the Church, many of us may be feeling insecurity in our current cultural context. The Church has diminished in numbers, significance, and reputation recently. There are many past hurts and current controversies that are tied to the Church. But, when we look at scripture, we see that the Church was and is God's chosen instrument to reveal himself to the world. In this week's message, Ahren reminds us that our purpose is to bring glory to God, and challenges us to consider how we can make that our central focus.

When God is in something, we can do it. Often, when God asks us to do something, the task can seem impossible. But all God asks of us is that we faithfully do what is possible for us and leave the impossible up to Him. In particular, Ivan asks us to consider this in light of the work of evangelizing and discipling, and he shares how God called him to do this in his own life.

The Great Commission tells us to "GO."(Matt. 28:16-20) However, if we're honest, we're not going very fast. The imperative to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey all that he has commanded, sounds incredibly challenging in a cultural context when no one wants to be taught and no-one wants to obey. That being said, the first Christians thrived in an environment like that, and we can too. As we examine the life of the early church, we'll discover that the only way to make teachable obedient disciples is to become true disciples ourselves. List any inner resistance to reaching your friend, and you'll find a discipleship issue with yourself. Will we engage in the process and let him MAKE (poieó/construct) us into "fishers of men"(Matt. 4:19)?

Ruth chapter 3 tells the love story of Ruth and Boaz. While this may not be our typical kind of romance, as Ahren explains, it is a representation of our relationship with God. Like Boaz, Jesus fills the role of kinsman redeemer and we can learn from Ruth how to respond to Him accordingly.

Most Christians started out as skeptics and most of us who grew up in the faith go through significant periods of doubt and wrestling as we try to find an intellectual framework for our experience of knowing Jesus. Whether you’re a skeptic, or a believer wrestling with doubt, you are probably digging into the same questions. Did Jesus exist? Is his story based on myths? Can we trust what was written about him? Did he really claim to be God? Did he really die and come back to life? Who was Jesus? Is he Master or Myth? Come join us at ovv.ca.

Looking in while looking out! There is a weird tension in Christianity. We are called to gather in a holy way to grow in godliness and pray for our world representing its needs to God while at the same time we are supposed to represent Jesus as a relevant answer to our non-christian friends. How do we be both “churchy” and mission oriented at the same time. How do we do that as whole people without being two-faced? How do we REPRESENT?

What does "Imputed Righteousness" mean for our daily lives? The Cross gives us the free gift not JUST of being made clean from our sin, but to be clothed with the Righteousness of God in Christ Jesus Himself. Psalm 66:16-20 Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me. For I cried out to him for help, praising him as I spoke. Jake spoke about the Parable of the Prodigal Son, inspired by Henri Nouwen's book. We may by and large identify with the Elder Brother or Prodigal Son, as Christians, but our journey is destined towards becoming the Father in this parable. The free expression of love, with "treasures stored in heaven," "imitating God as beloved children".

Read the Parable of the Prodigal Son: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+15%3A11-32&version=NLT

Other scripture references: Luke 13:20-21 He also asked, “What else is the Kingdom of God like? It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”

Matthew 6:19-21 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Ephesians 5:1-2 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

1 John 4:18-19 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.

Jake continues teaching through Hebrews 12:1-2 and talks specifically about "laying aside every weight and the sin which clings so closely" as we run our race of faith with endurance. Passages:

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 3:7-13

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

You are loved by God. You are valuable. You are an eternal being, called to a greater life and hope than you ever thought possible. How this comes, is through receiving the forgiveness of Jesus Christ, and allowing Him to be your Dad, Lord and Friend.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Ahren walks us through part of OVV's Vision Statement, teaching from Philippians chapter 2:1-8. The transforming power of God in gathered community. Seeing one another as God sees us, and meeting with Jesus in others, not just "another person".

Philippians 2:1-8 (NLT) Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
