CityTrex.com is producing a series of podcasts and virtual tours - MP3 audio walking tours for onsite interpretation, and GPS apps for driving tours for a day trip into the undeveloped barrier islands of the Sea Island Lowcountry.
Penn Center shows much of the core of this exploration. Agrarian life of people in rural Southern USA, not just country living but island life with an added obstacle of slavery, post-slavery, and circumstances of limited exposure to any opportunity.
So… life was still made good by living right, being clever, and keeping on.

an accomplished man recalls his island childhood, a world that barely exists anymore.

The land is the Sea Island Lowcountry, and the island is St. Helena Island (the home of the Gullah culture), a barrier Island off the coast of South Carolina,
Meet Doctor Jonas Gadson, currently a Minister with the Beaufort Church of Christ,
A local who went to the mainland to have a career with Xerox and with Eastman Kodak, then returned home to found a church and serve his native community.
Doctor Gadson is a gentleman that has lived the advice of his marvelous Mother, who told him that “Manners will take you where money won’t”.

- children doing farm work picking tomatoes or cucumbers because that means new shoes and school clothes.
“Everyone wanted me to work, they knew I was a hard worker.”

The inaugural Short Story America Festival and Conference is scheduled for September 21-23 in Beaufort, South Carolina. This three-day celebration of new and classic short stories will feature readings, discussions and signings by top authors of short fiction.
Visiting authors will give seminars and workshops on writing and analysis of short stories all day on Saturday, September 22nd, in the classrooms at USCB’s Center for the Arts in Beaufort. Readings and signings by authors will take place throughout the day in the arts center’s theater, with a chance for discussion of each story with the story’s author.

Rebecca Sprecher hails from Kentucky, and joined Pan Am after graduating from Chapel Hill. She flew for Pan Am for six years out of New York and Honolulu. After leaving Pan Am in the late 70’s she lived in Hawaii for thirty years, where she had a ten-year career as a sales representative and Manager with Xerox
Corporation. She was also on the Board of the Hawaii Opera theatre, a founding member of The Friends of the Contemporary Museum, Honolulu and a docent at the Contemporary Museum, Honolulu. Rebecca moved to Beaufort County 10 years ago with her husband Greg. In addition to writing, playing the piano, and playing golf, Rebecca volunteers with Historic Beaufort Foundation and is the Chair of the Dataw Island Club Food and Beverage Committee. She is the co-author of Flying: A Novel.

That Used to Be US: America has a huge problem. It faces four major challenges, on which its future depends, and it is failing to meet them. Thomas L. Friedman, one of our most influential columnists, and Michael Mandelbaum, one of our leading foreign policy thinkers, analyze those challenges — globalization, the revolution in information technology, the nation’s chronic deficits, and its pattern of energy consumption — and spell out what we need to do now to rediscover America and rise to this moment.
Prior to her move to Beaufort County, she was district superintendent for Oconee County schools for four years and served as Chief Instructional Services Officer for School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties for almost a decade. She also served as senior executive assistant for the SC Department of Education, supervising areas of policy, teacher licensure, technology, and student assessment. Dr. Truesdale is a former high school principal, assistant principal, personnel administrator and teacher. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in Educational Leadership in 1988, an M. B. A. from Georgia State University in 1978, and a Bachelor's degree in English Education from Clemson University in 1974.

The "Jingle Bells" city of America.
Jingle Bells, one of our favorite holiday songs, does not sound much like a song of the sunny old south. But interestingly, at the time it was copyrighted in 1857, the man who composed it was living right here in Savannah and considered this his adopted city.
His name was James Lord Pierpont, originally from Medford, Massachusetts.
Pierpont the composer was a kind of Stephen Foster character, always writing music, and something of a wanderer. From all accounts, he was tall and handsome, charming, and had many friends; but he seemed to have a hard time making a living.
He arrived in the early 1850s where his brother John, Jr. had just become minister of the Unitarian Church. He became the church organist and also gave music and singing lessons.
From what we know, Pierpont wrote a great deal of music when he was in Savannah. By 1854 he was describing himself on sheet music as "A Gentleman of Savannah". He was composing snappy banjo tunes for the new minstrel shows sweeping the country, polkas, romantic love songs, and nostalgic ballads about home, family , and early death -- all popular themes in Victorian America.
Still residing in Savannah, his most popular song was published in Boston in 1857. It was titled, "One Horse Open Sleigh". Within two years, it was retitled as "Jingle Bells".
The song earned little fame or fortune for Pierpont during his lifetime, although he renewed the song's copyright in the 1880s. He died and was buried at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah in the Purse family plot.
With the advent of radio and the phonograph shortly after his death, the song achieved fame throughout the world.
In the 1980s, then Mayor John Rousakis proclaimed Savannah, Georgia the "Jingle Bells" city of America.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston, S.C., received notification from a nearby boat that Frazier had fallen off the fishing vessel, Miss Pudgey, while attempting to make repairs and had not resurfaced. The reporting source indicated that he was not wearing a life jacket.

Drink Small this Friday
A second performance! By popular demand from those in the audience and those that let it slip by… Drink Small, South Carolina’s iconic 76-year-old blues legend will perform Friday June 5th 4PM to 7PM at Mad River Bar & Grille
Two weeks ago Drink Small, the Blues Doctor, made a huge splash at Piccolo Spoleto Early Bird Blues Series.
Drink (his real name) captivated a happy hour crowd of 150 with his razorwire guitar and deep bass vocals. Songs both kindhearted and edgy, Drink Small is South Carolina's greatest living blues artist with wild tales and wicked skills who has been recording since the mid-1950s.
The venue is an old church and was a pleasant bolt from the blue for many folks at his first show in May. It stands with other venues where Drink brought the house down - Chicago Blues Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, King Biscuit, Mississippi Valley...the list goes on.
This show is must for any fan or student of music, southern culture, and anyone seeking to experience real-deal summertime blues. See you there – get there early, everyone else will. Raucous blues performances this good usually occur in a dangerous venue – with this Piccolo Spoleto Early Bird Blues Series show you can introduce the family to a blues icon and still get home before the streetlights come on.

You’ll know that Kay Ford is a bit old school when she begins her Garden City story saying, “I was born and ‘reared’ in Garden City,” rather than saying “raised”. Her English is correct and she talks with ease about her lifetime in a small town by a big port in the shadow of the more famous city of Savannah, Georgia. She’s well spoken and she’s clearly self-aware, but not at all not self-absorbed.
