Finn Harps striker Kevin McHugh has been speaking about a freak accident which resulted in him losing his finger last week. The former Derry City player was hosting a coaching session in Donegal when his wedding ring got caught in a fence. Unfortunately his finger couldn't be saved and he says that he will not play again because of the injury. He's been speaking to our reporter Barry Whyte..
Some taxi drivers in Derry say the newly installed meter system will mean they finally earn fair wages. As of Saturday last, all taxis in Northern Ireland are required to have a meter and printer which will automatically set and record fares. But some drivers also feel there has been confusion about how the system has been introduced. Our reporter Una Kelly has been getting reaction from drivers and punters in Derry.

A lifeguard has described the dramatic moment two pedestrians escaping after they wandered into a railway tunnel as a train approached. The near miss at Downhill Strand on the north coast was released by Translink to highlight the dangers of trespassing on the lines. Limavady mum Emma Kane says she's been left heartbroken after she says she was told that her three-year-old son Caleb no longer had a nursery place - just 48 hours before he was due to start. Emma had his uniform ready to start Buttercup Nursery - a special needs nursery in Limavady. She says a breakdown in communication between the nursery and the Education Authority means he has lost his place. The Education Authority say they have now launched an investigation. Emma has been speaking to our reporter Dean McLaughlin. She starts here by telling him about what life is like for Caleb on a daily basis.
A spokesperson for the Education Authority in Northern Ireland said: "It is not appropriate for the Education Authority to comment on the circumstances of an individual child. We are aware of an issue raised relating to communication with a parent and are currently investigating this matter further. The Education Authority provides a pre-school teaching service for children with special educational needs prior to commencing their pre-school year.
The statement goes on to say:
"In September 2016, as in previous years, this service will provide advice and support to parents to meet the needs of their children prior to commencing their pre-school year. As EA must give priority for pre-school places to children of the appropriate age, no places in special schools have been offered to under-age children."

Imagine being on a smooth flight over the atlantic and out of the blue there's a sudden, uncontrolled drop. Passengers scream like they're on a funfair ride. John Dunton-Downer from London was on a United Airlines flight that had to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport after hitting severe turbulence. Twelve people, including three children, were injured and taken to hospital. He told our reporter Dean McLaughlin he's extremely glad to be alive..
The lifetime ban on gay men donating blood is being lifted from today. It will be replaced by a one-year deferral - bringing us into line with the rest of the UK. That means that a man who's been sexually active with another man within the last 12 months will still not be allowed to give blood. Some local gay men have welcomed the lifting of the ban but say the reform doesn't go far enough. Anna Maguire reports from Strabane where she met Ryan in the Central Bar - a gay bar in the town.
Syrian families living in Derry have been describing what life was like for them in the war-torn country before they fled and what life is still like for the loved ones they've left behind. One man has recently lost ten members of his family after their house was bombed. The group arrived in the city in May and families have spent the past three months settling in. Some were at the North West Regional College yesterday to find out more about courses. This is the first time they have spoken publicly about what their lives were like before they had to leave their home country. This report by Anna Maguire starts with 18-year-old Bayan's story.

It's emerged that the 13-year-old victim of the Magilligan motorbike crash was struck by his brother on the motocross track after he came off his bike. Daniel Sheridan, known as Dano to his family and friends, will be buried in Dublin this afternoon. He visited the track in regularly with his family. The Family of the late musician Stephen Martin have spoken of their added grief after his home was burgled while he was missing. The body of the 29-year-old, who performed under the name Rainy Boy Sleep, was found in County Sligo on 13 August. He went missing last month after his car was found parked at Fanad Lighthouse, County Donegal. Stephen's brother Sean told Una Kelly the thieves had committed a "deplorable act"...

Three companies who have sponsorship deals with the American swimmer Ryan Lochte have announced they're dropping him from their brand. Sponsors including the swimwear firm Speedo USA, and the fashion company Ralph Lauren have terminated agreements with Lochte after he lied to Brazilian police about being robbed at the Rio games. The grieving son of a man killed in car crash near Claudy last week says he doesn't want to his father's death to be in vain and he is now starting a road safety campaign in his memory. 60-year-old Wilson Sherrard who was from the Fountain in Derry was a passenger in a car which was involved in a collision with a van on the Foreglen Road. A new world record has been set by a Donegal man who sheared 867 strong wool lambs in nine hours. Ivan Scott, from Kilmacrennan in County Donegal, beat New Zealander Don King's 2007 record by just one lamb. Mr Scott averaged 96.33 lambs every hour, or one every 37.37 seconds. A priest has appealed to motorists to slow down and be more careful to avoid more carnage on the roads. Within a 24-hour period last week, and just a few miles apart, five young people were killed in two horrific head-on crashes near Letterkenny. Three of them were buried yesterday and two on Saturday. Fr Eamonn Kelly conducted requiem mass yesterday for 19-year-old Stephen McCafferty at St Eunan's Cathedral in Letterkenny, and told mourners that his life had changed "in the blink of an eye".

Ten months ago Kelda Morgan feared her career as a show jumper was over after a crushing fall at Eglinton equestrian centre. She suffered serious spinal injuries and was left with no power in her arms. In fact she had to be spoon fed. Kelda, who's from St Johnston in County Donegal, is not just better, but is this week competing at the Dublin horseshow in the RDS arena. The mother of a Limavady boy, who has a rare form of muscular dystrophy, said she is "delighted" that he will now receive treatment. Seven-year-old Callum Smith suffers from Duchenne, a genetic disease that gradually causes weakness and loss of muscle function. CCTV cameras are to be installed at Derry City Cemetery in a bid to stop anti-social behaviour. Headstones were smashed over the weekend causing distress to relatives. It was the third such incident in as many months. In April, police said up to 20 headstones and memorials at Derry City Cemetery were damaged.
A DUP councillor says some residents in the Waterside are calling for the closure of the Peace Bridge at night because of anti-social behaviour. Our clipper reporter Anna Quigley was among the crowds on dry land with families and friends of local crew members Danny Byrce and Sinead Diver, who were on-board the Derry~Londonderry~Doire yacht.
They have sailed thousands of miles and in just two days time the Clipper yachts will sail up the Foyle for a homecoming...Derry style. The fleet is currently ahead of schedule so the race is on to get the Foyle Marina ready for their arrival, Anna Quigley went a walk along the quay to see how preparations are going.
The members of the Hamilton Flute Band joined up "to a man" when war broke out in 1914, and served as stretcher-bearers at the Somme. Two members of the band - Lance Corporal Joseph Scott, from Moore Street, and Rifleman George Mills, from Pine Street - were killed on the 1st of July. The band's drum - which was used to serve communion at the front - now hangs in the cathedral, and that wartime ceremony will be recreated tomorrow evening. Freya McClements has been to see the drum and hear more about a piece of music which has been specially commissioned for the band...
Lisa Orsi was just 22 years-old when she died from altitude sickness during a volcano trek in Indonesia last year. In life the Derry physiotherapist was described as inspirational and in death she brought fresh hope to others by donating nine of her organs. Last night saw the launch of the Lisa Orsi foundation which aims to promote organ donation and also provide scholarships to the Asian Gaelic games cup, a title Lisa lifted in 2014.

Thomas Young was an orphan from Rosemount who was sent away to join the army. When the First World War broke out he encouraged other young local men to enlist, even helping them to train in nearby fields. Every one of them was killed at the Somme, leaving the area bereft. Thomas's wife Elizabeth was left a widow with six children to raise, and was ostracised by her neighbours who blamed her husband for leading the others to their deaths. Their granddaughter Lily O'Hagan still lives in Rosemount, and she's been telling our reporter Freya McClements about her grandparents.

A major air and sea search for two people is to resume this morning for two people after the light aircraft they were flying in went missing over the North Channel. The Microlight left the City of Derry airport yesterday morning and is understood to have been bound for Scotland. 2 rescue helicopters and 6 coastguard teams are involved in the search. A 25 year old Derry woman has been sentenced to 9 months in prison for stealing more than £10,000 pounds from elderly ladies she was caring for. Danielle McDermott, who now has an address in Belfast, pleaded guilty to three charges of stealing money, converting criminal property and fraud by false representation relating to a debit card in 2013 and 2014. One of her victims was Dinah Porter. Her daughter Laura has been speaking to our reporter Teresa Craig.

An 89 year old Derry woman says she feels betrayed by a care worker who stole hundreds of pounds of her pension money. 25-year Danielle McDermott will be sentenced later this week after she admitted taking £11,000 from two pensioners over nine months. She started to care for Dinah Porter following a fall which left her in hospital. McDermott was caught when Dinah's daughter set up a camera phone in her mother's bedroom and marked notes in her purse. Tony's mum Dorothy Gillespie, who was from the Waterside, had beat cancer twice. And despite losing her voice-box and her left-lung to the disease, she remained an outgoing, positive and resilient woman who loved nature and gardening. The mother-of-three died last October after the cancer returned a third time. One thing Dorothy loved to do was walk the same route near her home every day. And that walk is something Tony takes comfort from, now his mum is gone.Elaine Mcgee went with him, following in Dorothy's footsteps.
A Derry priest has appealed for no retaliation following the murder of a man in the city last week. 24 year old Gerard Quinn died after he was stabbed with a broken glass. A 16 year old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons has been charged with Mr Quinn's murder. A neighbour who tried to save the life of a 24-year-old man murdered in Londonderry has said he will 'never get over' his death. Gerard Quinn was assaulted at Milldale Crescent in Currynierin on Saturday night. He was taken to Altnagelvin hospital but later died. On Monday, police were granted an extra 24 hours to question a 16-year-old boy in connection with the murder. Paul Sharkey said he cannot sleep and can still "taste the blood". It seems hotels in Derry are like buses these days. None for ages then three come along at once. Yesterday, plans for a new boutique hotel were given the green light by Derry City and Strabane District Council. Elm Village, the developer behind the plans, submitted a proposal to refurbish listed buildings between Foyle Street and Shipquay Place. The plans include a bar and a restaurant. A Derry man has claimed he was choked at Europa bus station in Belfast on Monday evening by a security guard. He alleges he was unconscious for a time. 23-year-old Kevin McColgan says he made an offensive comment about one of the G4S members of staff to his girlfriend and that the guard overheard him. He claims he was restrained shortly after that by two guards and says he never, at any stage, presented himself as a violent person. Kevin McColgan was arrested on suspicion of assault and released pending further enquiries. In a statement G4S said it takes allegations of improper conduct very seriously. It said CCTV footage appeared to show that after a prolonged period of aggressive behaviour towards Translink inspectors and its team, a man was restrained. It said that shortly afterwards, police officers assessed the situation and detained the man after continued aggression towards staff, the police and an ambulance crew." Translink also say they are aware of the incident and that they have viewed CCTV footage.

Michael Stewart and Kieran Whoriskey from Derry are both living with early on-set Parkinsons. Michael, a father-of-two was 39 when he was told. Kieran was 26. The two knew each other from their school days but little did they know then it would be Parkinsons that would, later in life, bring them together. They're both now 40 and speaking out because they want others to know they're not alone. John Fox was one of the leaders of the Irish Volunteers in Derry who was interned after the Rising. A lifelong Republican, he was presented to Eamon de Valera when he visited Derry as Taoiseach in 1951. Freya McClements has been hearing all about him from his grandson Cathal Fox.
This Sunday it will be exactly 100 years since the Easter Rising began in Dublin. A new study has found that a psychiatrist in Belfast was able to continue working with children after he'd been convicted for child abuse in the 1970s. Dr Morris Fraser was the Senior Psychiatric Registrar at the Royal Victoria Hospital and author of a book about how the Troubles affected children. The Dublin academic Dr Niall Meehan who carried out the study says that information about Dr Frasers' offences was withheld from the public by the authorities. Dr Meehan says that explanation is owed to the victims of Dr. Fraser. One of them is Richard Kerr who now lives in Texas. We spoke to him on The Breakfast Show -
The husband of a County Tyrone woman who died from lung cancer has praised staff at Altnagelvin Hospital for helping her fulfil her dying wish... to marry him. Jacqueline McCullagh was diagnosed in October but was too ill to travel to the Registry Office in Omagh for her wedding. Her husband Martin says the staff who looked after her, went above and beyond to give her the wedding day she so desperately dreamed of after their 20-year relationship. Forty years ago John Toland was shot dead while working in the Happy Landing bar in Eglinton. She was left to bring up their seven children - the oldest 15 and youngest 7. Now for the first Marie has talked about the devastating impact her husbands murder had on their lives. It has been put together by Creggan Enterprises and was launched last night by actress Bronagh Gallagher.

Winston Cross was 18 years old and was about to start a new life in the army when in 1974 his life was cut short. He was abducted, tortured for three days in Donegal before being shot by the IRA along with his friend Joseph Slater. His parents were later told it was a case of mistaken identity. Until now his family have never talked publicly about his murder or the devastating impact it had on their family.
His only sister Sharon Austin has now for the first time told how their family fell apart. She details it all in a new book - Beyond the Silence - which features the stories of 28 women from Derry who lost loved ones during the Troubles or suffered in other ways.

For years, Tullyally woman Julie-Ann Coll has collected the tickets at the door of the Derry City and Strabane District Council Woman of the Year event. But on Friday night, the 33-year-old found herself centre-stage when she was awarded the title. Julie-Ann is the founder of the Life After Loss support group which she set up after the death of her own baby Mark. The mother-of-four says she now wants to use her new title to encourage more women to talk about miscarriage and still-birth. Well one voice which didn't feature in the spotlight programme was that of the former RUC detective who found the crucial piece of evidence which helped convict Black of Jennifer Cardy's murder. He found a petrol receipt which proved Black was less than a mile from Jennifer's house on the day she disappeared. That was 16 years before Black would stand trial for Jennifer's murder....a delay which the former officer said was unacceptable. Speaking publicly for the first time...the policeman - who didn't want to be identified - told Enda McClafferty how he found the receipt.

The private company that operates City of Derry Airport has defended it's running costs to the ratepayer here. CODA says the retention and expansion of the airport is a key element of the North West's infrastructure and it sayS it contributes around £7m to the local economy. Derry and Strabane Independent Councillor Paul Gallagher has called for it to be sold as he claims it's too big a burden. The council's given the airport a budget of £3,445,000 this year. Rates. They have certainly got you talking. On Friday, Derry City and Strabane District Council agreed that the rates would go up by 2.15 per cent this year. So what does that mean for your pocket? For the average domestic ratepayer in Derry, it amounts to an extra £15.34 a year, which is about 29 pence per week. It's even more if you're in Strabane: the average ratepayer there will be paying £19.42 per year, which works out at 37pence more per week. A Castlederg man, who lives close to the border, says he hasn't been consulted about a planned major wind farm in County Donegal. Planree is the company behind Carrickaduff wind farm. There has been a pipe bomb attack on a house in the Waterside. Two adults and a child were in the house at Ebrington Street when the device was thrown into their back yard just after midnight. About 50 teachers have held a protest in Guildhall Square calling for a scheme to provide jobs for newly qualified teachers to be extended to anyone without a permanent job. In December the education minister John O'Dowd announced the creation of 500 jobs for teachers with three years experience or less - but the protest group Equal Rights For Teachers says it bars more than 2,000 experienced teachers from applying. There's growing anger at the suspected dissident republicans who left two weapons in a car within feet of graves of Derry city cemetery. A controlled explosion was carried out on the car last night and the security alert only ended before midday. Fiona Kelly's husband and father - civil rights veteran Paddy "bogside" Doherty and well-known republican Jim kelly - died on the same day three weeks ago and are buried near the scene of the controlled explosion. She told Keiron Tourish that people are furious at what's happened.
More than 100 developments in Derry and Strabane have been left with issues such as no streetlights and worn footpaths as there's no-one to upkeep and maintain where they live. The plights of residents living in one of those developments, Copperthorpe in Drumahoe, was raised at a special council meeting yesterday. They say it's now time for the Roads Minister to intervene. They say the risk of breast cancer recurring or causing death can be reduced by up to 40% by doing recommended levels of physical activity. A mother of three says she's leaving her home in Derry after being targeted in a suspected arson attack. The shed at the back of the house at Liscloon Drive in Shantallow was destroyed in a fire early on Saturday morning. A police patrol spotted the flames and rescued Lisa Scarlett and her children and nephew from the house. The cause of the fire has yet to be established but the police say they're treating it as a suspected arson attack. Ms Scarlett told our reporter Freya McClements what happened.

A large shed which contained 600 tonnes of wood chips went on fire at John Gilliland's farm on the Culmore Road on Saturday. It took two and a half days to put out. The mother of murdered Derry woman Jean Quigley says she is relieved justice has finally been done. Yesterday, Stephen Cahoon was found guilty for a second time of the brutal murder in a house in Cornshell Fields back in 2008. It emerged after the trial that Cahoon had a history of violence against women. Jean's mother Emma McBride has been speaking to our reporter Anna Quigley, and began by telling her how she felt the moment the jury delivered the guilty verdict.
A grandfather and grandson say they had a lucky escape after an oxygen tank caught fire and exploded inside their car on Wednesday evening. Conor Morrow had switched on his grandfather Odhran's oxygen to help him walk from the car to his Bishop Street home but it ignited inside the vehicle, burning his hand as he pushed his grandfather clear of the flames. Their car was completely destroyed. The fire service are treating the fire as accidental. Odhran and Conor Morrow have been speaking to our reporter Freya McClements.

Hughie O'Donnell first went to live and work in America in 2001 without a work Visa but when he came home to Gweedore in 2008 to visit his dying father he was banned from re-entering the US. However, he admits defying the ban and going back where he got married and had children. He then applied for citizenship but was refused because of his previous ban. Pat Hume, the wife of Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume, has spoken for the first time about his battle with dementia. She told RTÉ's Sunday with Miriam programme that her husband's illness had deteriorated since he became ill in the late 90s and he now struggled to remember day-to-day events.

It was agreed at a Council meeting yesterday that greyhound racing will be publicly advertised at £55 an hour when the new stadium is built. A former soldier injured in the Ballygawley bus bombing in 1988 has been reunited with the two women from Derry who he believes saved his life. James Leatherbarrow lay trapped on the ground after the blast in which eight of his colleagues were killed. James put out an appeal on Breakfast last month to find the two women who helped him and he met them yesterday at remembrance commemorations at the memorial site near Ballygawley. A retired teacher from South Africa has been describing how he tried in vain to save the lives of the Co Down couple drowned on their Honeymoon last week. The bodies of newlyweds John and Lynette Rodgers, from Holywood were found on a beach at Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape. Later this morning a joint funeral will be held for the couple at First Holywood Presbyterian Church - the same church where the couple were married.
