On our first Episode back this Spring, we'll be talking about environmental issues and social justice related to how we can establish a more peaceful global environment. Special guests will include Robert Weir, author, speaker and former chair of the 6th District Campaign for a Department of Peace and Kevin Szawala, motivational speaker and Michigan Coordinator for The Peace Alliance.
Last Fall I talked about gay rights and equality and in the Spring, I had the pleasure to talk with an excellent line up on the historic Harvey Milk Day. Joining me again on this episode are special guests and national spotlight John Lewis and Stuart Gaffney, San Francisco Bay Area Based couple, founders of Marriage Equality USA and Asian Equality and pioneers for LGBT equality for justice through their involvement with a Civil Suit in the State of California for equal access to legal marriage. Followed by Mr. Samuel Chu, Executive Director of California for Faith Equality and the California Faith for Equality Action Fund, a statewide network of over 6,000 congregations, organizations and faith leaders working to educate, support and mobilize California’s faith communities to promote equality for LGBT people. Maureen DeNieva is back again this week and in one of her many elements as an activist and ally for LGBT equality. We'll talk about Dont Ask Dont tell and look back on this movement in context with modern day civil rights and social justice movements.
It's been almost a month since the November 2nd midterm election. Now the public is waiting for new legislatures to begin across the country. In the mean time local efforts are happening to regroup, organize and build a strategy going forward. We'll talk about these and other related issues. Special guests: Ms. Maureen DeNieva, San Francisco Bay Area Non profit and small business professional and current candidate for a local democratic position in the San Jose area and Mr. Chris Praedel Kalamazoo Michigan based teacher and former candidate for State Office who has been actively involved as a student leader, Teach for America volunteer and dedicated Democrat.
Does it really exist? Well we'll talk about ways you can work on managing your time and still having fun during the holiday season. Our featured guest will be Keri Francek Jaehnig, Ohio based non profit and small business consultant, CEO of Culturally Connected and Idea Girl Media.
In a global society many of our resources are broad reaching, however it can't make a true impact unless it's grass roots and sustainable. We'll discuss that and I'll have the pleasure of talking with Mr. Doug Weinbrenner, Missouri based public health and social marketing expert, Ms. Lodz Joseph, Global Health Professional, writer and leader of a new arts initiative in New York and Ms. Kelly Cleaver, Detroit based Nonprofit Professional, working on food security and leading the local grass roots movement.
Last season we had great fun starting this new show with awesome guests from all over the continent talking about social media, small business, prevention, mental health, race, class, gender and sexuality, alternative healing, you name it. Special guests to be announced.
This season we've had the privilege of talking with an amazing line up of guests from across the country and North America. We've discussed a wide variety of issues with experts in the field and leaders within their industries. On this episode, we’ll explore issues related to gender and sexuality with a focus on social issues, civil rights, and marriage equality. Our first guest will be Mr. Samuel Chu, Executive Director of California for Faith Equality and the California Faith for Equality Action Fund, a statewide network of over 6,000 congregations, organizations and faith leaders working to educate, support and mobilize California’s faith communities to promote equality for LGBT people. Mr. Chu will be followed by San Francisco-based couple John Lewis and Stuart Gaffney, the leaders of Marriage Equality USA and Asian Equality, who will share their personal story as being among the first same-sex couples married on the steps of San Francisco’s City Hall in 2004, and thereafter, as plaintiffs in the marriage lawsuit before the California Supreme Court. Our local spotlight is Ms. Maureen DeNieva San Jose native and Bay Area Grass Roots Community Organizer for Youth Development, Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention, she is an active young leader who supports gay rights, equality and a long time student leader. Her work to support young people and encourage a future generation of pro equality communities will be a vital contribution to this show.
On this episode we'll talk about race, ethnicity and social justice. The discussion will involve defining and debunking society's misconceptions about race, how that effects our class structure, population health and the importance of social justice as a tool for fairness and equality. Guests will include Dr. Yolanda Moses Associate Vice Chancellor, Diversity, Excellence & Equity and Anthropology Professor at the University of California, Riverside and Dr. Gonzalo Bacigalupe, Associate Professor of Psychology from the University of Massachusetts.
On this episode we'll talk about ways in which we can foster environments that promote health and wellness through the work we do. This will include, sex and relationships, giving of service to others and providing opportunities for personal and professional enrichment on the giving and receiving ends. Joining me will be Dr. John Beiter, Psychologist, Certified Sex Therapist and executive coach from the Pittsburgh, PA area, Dr. Jack Chuang, Texas based College Professor and leader of international humanitarian service projects and Dr. Sean Harris, Executive Director of The Recovery Institute and mental health advocate in the State of Michigan. It's an all male line up this time!
On this episode we'll talk about how young professionals, either in age or at heart are setting the tone for social change. We'll focus on the importance of pushing back and partnering with our current leaders, reaching out to younger generations and doing what works. The national spotlight to kick off the show will be Doug Weinbrenner public health, nonprofit and social media expert, along with Charisse Ma Lebron, San Francisco based community organizer and policy advocate with a wide range of experience addressing pressing public health and community issues and our local spotlight will include Kelly Cleaver, Detroit Michigan based young non profit professional working on food security issues and leading an effort to organize and motivate her fellow colleagues within this hard hit town.
On this show we'll be taking a look at the various ways in which health and wellness can be reinforced through the many shapes, colors, self expressions, practices and ways of living that will impact our health. I'll be talking with Cinda Johnson, University professor, national speaker and pioneer of mental health advocacy with her daughter Linea, Dr. Michelle Gannon, a San Francisco based pyschologist specializing in relationships, wellness and women's issues and the local spotlight with Virginia Gibbs, a well rounded woman with training both in academia and alternative healing methodology who is also a musician. It's an all female, powerful line up!
During this show we'll talk about issues relevant to mental health, our current system, how it has evolved and what others are doing amongst the new and progressive movements within the field. Joining me will be Larry Fricks of the Appalachian Consulting Group in Georgia, a consumer leader with national recognition, Keith Anderson from Canada, who's an active volunteer with Bring Change 2 Mind and a mental health advocate in his country and finally a local spotlight with Marcia Probst, state wide consumer advocate and Peer Support Specialist in Southwest Michigan.
During this show we'll talk about how the concept of making a difference in the world can be applied to what we do in our every day lives. This will include discussion on civic engagement amongst young people, active voters and the broader community. Joining me will be Kevin Lignell who's an Americorps VISTA at the Poverty Reduction Iniative with expertise on the broader picture of poverty issues in Kalamazoo County Michigan and for our local spotlight: Chris Praedel, candidate for the 60th District State Representative seat in Michigan.
