Today we are talking all about IGTV and before you say oh well I don’t need another platform, this is more of an episode about how to repurpose your existing videos and use on instagram, while getting more views on IGTV. IGTV is basically YouTube for Instagram. So if you’re creating videos, you might a well be getting as much use of them as possible and that means using IGTV

Quick IGTV FAQ’s

  • Videos must be between 15 seconds and 10 minutes long.
  • Videos must be in MP4 file format.
  • For more techy explanations visit https://help.instagram.com/381435875695118

How to upload videos to IGTV

  1. Create an IGTV channel From the Instagram app or IGTV app:

    • Tap the IGTV symbol (TV with line inside)
    • in the top right of Feed, or open the IGTV app.
    • Tap the circle wheel icon
    • Make sure you have the proper sized video- I use Kapwing.com to resize to IGTV so wording fits. (Check out episode 111 for more details on Kapwing and resizing your videos https://the-social-launch.zencast.website/episodes/111) You could also record a vertical video.
    • From IGTV, click on the plus symbol to add a video (aim for 1 minute)
    • Complete title and description
    • important add a preview to your feed! This is so important because your video will show up on your Instagram profile, and if someone finds interesting, they can click to watch the full video. So basically you’re getting your content on 2 platforms at once. Another note** you can also add to Facebook at the same time!

Another awesome feature of IGTV is that for smaller accounts who want the swipe up feature and don’t have, you can link your Instagram stories to your IGTV videos! Another thing you can do with your IGTV videos, is send to people directly. So when you click into one of your videos, see the little paper airplane type icon, click that and direct message it.

This is SUCH a great way of getting more views, even if its only a handful at first, why not get more views on a video you already created?

I get asked quite often to check out infographics and products, and then if I like them, write a blog post about them with a link to their website.

This is a great way of getting more exposure for your brand, and improves your SEO if you get a link from a website that has high authority.

However, when you are the person reaching out to pitch your product or service, there are some things to avoid doing, or your email will likely end up deleted.

In this episode I share some of my experiences with being pitched to, and share some things to avoid in order to successful pitch your product and get a blog post written with your link included.

I received an excellent question from Sheila in the Social Media Optimizer Course:

"Is there any value in verifying our Facebook page?"

Thank you, Sheila, this is a fantastic question.

Although it's not a necessary step on your Facebook page, it does have some benefits.

If you are a public figure, ie. speaker, artist, musician, actor, getting verified would be more important so that fans know it is an official Facebook page versus a fan page or unofficial page. For a business page, the pro's to getting your page verified is:

  • your page will rank higher in the search results (Facebook tells you this when you go to verify your page)
  • it adds a level of legitimacy and lets people know that the page is recognized as the official brand page.
  • if a duplicate page is created, users will know your page is the official page.

Why have a blog? It gives you content to share on social media but it also gives you the opportunity to share your knowledge and opinion with your audience. It's great to share other peoples content but sharing your own content is powerful and a way of gaining more website traffic.

But what if you don't like writing? There are ways to write a blog post without actually writing. Here are a few tips.

One way to enhance your social media efforts and get your product seen by more people is to connect with social media influencers.

When a social media platform isn't working for you, do you stop using it?

I read and heard from a few different sources that Pinterest was the tool to use to get more traffic to your website. I checked my website analytics and... barely any traffic. But... I wasn't using Pinterest to its full advantage.

I did a couple things:

  • joined Pinterest groups (using the http://pingroupie.com/ website where you can find relevant groups)
  • redesigned my old blog posts to include a custom Pinterest graphic
  • started using Tailwind to schedule
  • started pinning more of other peoples Pins.
  • keep learning from Pinterest-ninjas like Peg Fitzpatrick and Melyssa Griffin

And then I checked my analytics soon after AND! Nothing. Well, barely anything. But I wasn't patient enough and expected results too quickly.

Well I was checking my analytics the other day (not to check Pinterest, but for something else) and was pleasantly surprised when Pinterest was actually showing me some traffic.

So my advice to you is, if you have been putting in a lot of work into a platform and it just isn't doing anything for you, you might want to quit. BUT, if you aren't getting any results from a platform, look at what you're doing. Is your platform completely optimized? Are you putting in enough effort to get results?

Make the most of your social media platforms and make sure they are optimized to get the most out of them!

Here are a few ways you can tell your audience you won’t be online, and some tips for maximizing your time on social media so that you appear active but really aren’t spending your whole time online.

Tell your audience * Take an appropriate photo of you relaxing, a photo with your family, or maybe share an image of a tropical destination that you are going to over the holidays. * Write a story about why you are taking a ‘digital detox’ of your own. * Tell your audience how to contact you or when they can reach you again. * If you need to have an outlet for people to contact you, identify that method here, whether it’s sending an email or direct them to your contact page on your website. * By writing out detailed instruction and information about when you are returning, your audience will know exactly when they can contact you again.

Manage Your Facebook Messages One way to effectively manage your social media on Facebook is to adjust your message settings.

Another great feature to use within Facebook Messenger is to Show a Messenger Greeting

Are you using hashtags on social media? Or are you totally confused about what they are and why you use them? In this episode, I review what a hashtag is, why to use them and some tips and tricks for how to use hashtags properly.

A hashtag (#) is simply a way to tag a social media post with a word or short phrase. Hashtags are searchable so you can use them for specific locations, subjects, or events.

Although you can use hashtags on any social media site, they work better and make more sense on Twitter and Instagram in particular. I have seen (and tried) using hashtags on Facebook, but they just haven’t seemed to take off the same as on Twitter and Instagram.

I wouldn’t use a hashtag on Pinterest, and definitely not on LinkedIn.

Hashtags that get a lot of mentions and are popular get featured in the trending topics area of Twitter. If any of these trending topics make sense for you to use, you can use them in a post and your content could get seen by more people.

Using 1-2 hashtags per Tweet is acceptable, and make sure it is relevant to your topic. A hashtag can be used anywhere within your Tweet, it doesn’t have to be at the end.

Make sure when you use a new hashtag to research it so that you don’t use it in an offensive way.

You can use up to 30 hashtags per Instagram post (this is common and not weird). Use hashtags that actually relate to that post, so that anyone who finds you via the explore option would be more likely to interact with your content.

Hashtags make your content searchable, and using the trending area on Twitter and Search area on Instagram, gives you a chance to build up your account, which helps when you are getting started on social media. When you are looking to collaborate on a project, searching by relevant hashtags can help you find like-minded accounts.

The Benefits of Video Marketing

The online world has created an ideal platform for video marketing. It serves as an opportunity to reach customers 24/7 and give a more personal touch than simple text and pictures.

Marketing for businesses has dramatically changed within the past few years. When I first started in the marketing world, it was all about radio, television, direct mail and newspaper, complemented with billboards, etc. Today we need to take into account mobile.

We are seeing things in a much more visual way where people can consume their content on their own time. Today almost everyone is within reach of their phone at all times and this has changed the marketing world for businesses.

We not only need to think about mobile but also providing customers information in a way that we aren’t interrupting them; pop-ups on websites, commercials- these are things that consumers get sick of, so creating great videos or influencer marketing can be a way to market in a less-intrusive way.

A business owner can gain a wide range of benefits and advantages through video marketing. People watch online videos in order to get to know about a particular product or service.

What are two very important in business? Give value. How do you give value to people online? It can be quite easy.

  • Giving your customers tips, tools and tutorials that would help them
  • Sharing valuable information they need
  • Helping reduce a pain point for them
  • Giving something to a person without expecting anything in return (giving a free webinar without pitching a product at the end. If anyone ever did that, I would likely buy from them just because.)

How do you give value to your customers on social media? Do you run contest giveaways? Share important news and events happening? Share valuable info they can't find anywhere else?

Should You Schedule Your Social Media Posts? This is such a common topic among business owners and even social media managers; should I schedule social media posts for my business?

The short answer is yes. But of course, there is a long answer.

Maintaining your social media accounts can be time-consuming, especially if you want to be consistent and always top of mind with customers and potential customers. Once you setup your social media accounts, you’ve just begun. Now you need to maintain your accounts and post daily, or at least 3-5 times a week.

Why would I schedule my social media posts? When you schedule your social media posts weekly, or monthly, you will have consistent content being posted each day and you don’t have to worry each day about what you are going to post and you won’t have to go into your accounts daily to post. This gives you more time to engage and answer any questions each day.

Why schedule your posts: Consistency Save time Post at ideal times (based on your analytics) Global brands can post when their audience is online One thing that makes most things easier is a plan. When you have a plan for your social media and know what you plan to post each day, it makes it much easier and faster to post.

What is the Instagram Shadowban? Basically it means that certain hashtags you use on your posts could be ‘banned’ on Instagram and affect your account from being shown in the explore area of those specific hashtags. You and your followers would still see your posts, but anyone else would not.

I read about the Instagram Shadowban and found a tool to check if your account was banned. I used the tool and it said my account was banned, but when I checked the hashtags, I could see my posts.

I heard from a couple friends and watched a video by Jasmine Star (who is awesome BTW and you can find this video on her Facebook page) and realized that you needed to check your posts from an account other than your own. She also has a great article detailing why she thinks Instagram is doing this new hashtag ban.

Once I checked my account via my personal account I found that there were some hashtags that my posts didn’t show up for, yet some hashtags that I was sure I would be banned from because I use them often, like #socialmedia, I still showed up for.

An article posted on Insider recently, detailing information about the shadowban said it was just a bug on Instagram.

Confused yet?

If you noticed that lately your Instagram account engagement or number of new followers has drastically dropped, your account could be shadowbanned.

Are you spending too much time each week creating your own content?

I have a big secret for you.... share your old content.... (Gasp)

When you create a great blog, video or podcast, you don't need to stop sharing after one share. One piece of content can be re-shared multiple times.

First, start with a piece of content that is already popular with your audience. Use your social media analytics to see what posts received great engagement.

If you find a blog post that has way more traffic to it than any other post you have, and the read time is high, chances are it should be shared again!

Do you have a blog for your business?

Need more ideas for creating consistent blog content?

Regularly writing a blog requires consistency, dedication and …. ideas! Here are seven tips to write a blog post that people will actually read.

Use your own unique voice

There is so much content available to us, and you want to let your readers know why they want to read your content. By writing in your own voice and adding your personal spin on a subject, it makes it much more interesting for your readers and can make you more relatable too.

If your blog content sounds like everyone else’s, it will be hard for people to connect with you. But, if you can stand out to people in some way, they are more likely to come back for more.

Write about what interests you

Do you actually enjoy what you are blogging about? If you don’t enjoy what you are writing about, chances are other people won’t enjoy it either.

If you are struggling to put your interests down on paper, but you excel at creating videos, consider creating videos and sending to Fiverr or Rev to have them transcribed. Then you can format the transcription into a blog post and embed your video within your blog post. Now your readers have the option to read or watch your content.

Know who you’re writing for

Keeping your ideal customer in mind, or who specifically you are trying to help with your blog, think about what they want to read about.

Is your blog:

Helping them in some way? Providing them with valuable tips? Entertaining them? Written in a way that they will understand? When you are writing, always keep your audience in mind so you can tailor your content to them.

Amazing Ways to Use Customer Engagement to Create Social Media Content Are you looking for ways to increase your engagement on social media?

Want some easy ways to create more content that your customers love?

Including your customers into your social media content strategy is a sure-fire way to not only increase engagement, but to leave them wanting more content from you.

I’m going to show you four ways to create interesting, entertaining content for your social media audiences, plus how to create content using the suggestions of your audience.

1 Interactive Content Shonduras on Snapchat is a master at incorporating his audience into his Snapchat story and using their feedback and answers to provide content.

This interactive content is not only entertaining but he can use his audiences’ feedback as his content. Genius.

Shonduras uses fun, interactive content on Snapchat to turn a regular old holiday post and incorporates his audience to create more content for him to share.

You could ask for your followers to share a story with you, submit a photo or video, or submit a drawing. Interactive content is fun and different and will grab your audiences’ attention.

2 Answer FAQ’s Video is huge right now and live videos on Facebook, Twitter, Periscope and Instagram are where viewers’ attention is. When you go live, answering questions helps to increase the engagement and build your community, but it can also give you great insight into what your audience wants more of.

Are you getting a specific question on your live videos all the time? Or maybe you have a Facebook group and this question comes up almost daily. Chances are, if you created content around this, it would be well-received.

Kim Garst did this live Facebook video based on a question she received in her Facebook group.

Not only did Kim give a shoutout to one of her valued members, but she answered a question, gave great value, and she didn’t even have to think up this content, it was asked by her community.

Kim Garst uses audience questions to create amazing live videos that have a very high level of engagement.

You could also gather a few FAQ’s and do one monster video or blog post about them, or ask those people asking the question if they would create videos that you could use within your own social media content.

3 Analyze Your Content Have you ever really looked at your website analytics?

Taking a look at your own content and what’s already working can immediately give you some great insight into what’s working well and what your audience wants more of.

When you go to your Google Analytics account, pay close attention to the behaviour of your readers and what blog posts or pages they are not only visiting most but spending the most time on.

Chances are you have some blog posts that are getting huge amounts of traffic, or at least more significant than other posts. You can take those posts and turn into a great lead magnet to offer to get more email subscribers, you could write an update to those posts, or you could take pieces of that content and turn into other content like social media posts, Live videos, Instagram Stories, podcast episodes or YouTube videos.

4 Go for the Ask People love giving their input, so simply asking your audience a question can give you amazing product feedback and give you content to share on social media.

Some creative ways to ask for feedback:

Questions- using graphics, videos, animated graphics, GIF’s Polls FAQ Friday Focus Friday- shout out to people who answered questions Contests By giving your community a chance to answer a question, and then rewarding them by giving them a shoutout (and maybe even sending them a prize), this creates valuable content for you, and creates a more close-knit community.

Twitter is one of the most asked about platforms when I speak to businesses about social media. I often hear “Should I use Twitter for my business?” “What is a Tweet?”

To be honest, when I started on Twitter 8 years ago I had no idea what to do. And I really didn’t spend any time learning about it, so it didn’t work for me because I didn’t use it properly.

More recently, within the past couple years, I actually started focusing on social media and getting interested in actually using platforms properly. Once I started sharing information and interacting with people on Twitter I saw the huge potential for it and thought there was something about Twitter that could be great for business and building an audience.

Have you ever wondered how some businesses manage to have consistent content on all of their social media platforms? Chances are they use a social media management tool (or a combination of a few), which is basically a scheduler for your social media posts (though they are much more than just a scheduler).

How do you find the best social media scheduler for your business? In this post, I share my own experience with several, and share an informative infographic that rates the top 5 best social media management tools available; Agora Pulse, Sprout Social, Buffer, Sendible and Hootsuite.

Why should I schedule social media posts?

Scheduling your social media posts does a couple things:

  • provides consistent content all week/month
  • saves time by batching graphics and posts
  • saves more time because you spend less time 'looking around' and browsing for content
  • gives you more time during the week to interact and engage with your community
  • When you use a social media scheduler, it helps you to be more consistent on any social media platform, because you can choose one day a week or month, sit down to create your graphics and posts, schedule them, and then it's done.

You still want to monitor throughout the week to make sure you are answering questions and interacting with your followers, but you know that your accounts are being updated daily (or however often you decide works best for your business).
