Since the release of Amazon Brand Regsitry 2.0 we have been seeing a steady stream of brands that have been abusing the Intellectual Property claim process on Amazon. Many innocent sellers have been caught in the cross fire.

We have created a mini-course on how to address IP complaints. You can get it for free during the 2017 holiday season here: https://qk286-39b2aa.pages.infusionsoft.net

In this epsiode, we hear again from intellectual property lawyer Casey Vaugh from https://www.vaughnlaw.com/ and Chris McCabe from EcommerceChris.com. In this episode, both experts share some strategies to protect yourself from IP complaints.

Especially for those in the arbitrage model the risk to the safety of our accounts from complaints have been increasing. Amazon has used the idea of them being "simply a platform" as a way to avoid litigation and ignore the false IP issues. Casey shares how she advises clients that are dealing with IP complaints.

How does the fourth quarter look for you? For most entrepreneurs, Q4 is the most time-consuming and profitable season. Most business owners consider a balance between work and life a necessary step, but balance is not what you think. During Q4, you will be working so hard that you might believe that balance is impossible, but you don’t have to be everywhere and do everything all the time.

On today’s episode, I explain why most entrepreneurs reach a burnout point without even realizing it. Your work life and family time may have difficult situations during long work hours, but it’s okay to be unbalanced. As the Q4 season peaks at its maximum, it’s okay to work those extra hours to know it’s going to lead to more attainable goals in your life.

“Work-life-balance is a myth, and balance, in general, is a myth.”

Today on the Unstoppable Entrepreneur Show:

  • How to stay balanced during the peak times of Q4
  • Thinking outside of the box when it comes to balancing your life and work
  • What is the mindset to stay on track during a profitable season
  • How to avoid burnout if you’re overworking and not going anywhere
  • Setting up systems to motivate you to be more productive and efficient

Words of Wisdom:

  • Consider being out of balance as your new form of living and realize it’s okay
  • Think about the future as you lead a profitable unbalanced work life

If you’ve decided to expand your business to the international market, you may have discovered that protecting your profits can sometimes be a challenge. How can you sell your products efficiently and still make money while considering the currency conversion? Although it sounds simple enough, Lucy Marshall from World First shares some useful tactics for expanding your ecommerce business abroad. Lucy is an expert in international ecommerce and for five years, she has specialized in helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses with logistics and brand building.

On today’s episode, she explains the framework required to expand your market into other countries. Lucy describes the logistics that are vital to the market of your product in different countries other than the U. S. and, more importantly, she mentions the notion of taxes, compliance, and regulations of certain products in other countries.

An important note **

In minute 7-8, Lucy discusses registering for VAT and how to calculate those costs. It should be noted, that she does not work at a VAT company, nor is she an expert on the subject matter. Please note that while you should have a VAT number when selling internationally, you should also consult with a VAT consultant who understands the ins and outs of how this factors into your global business.

*“It’s a little bit of overhead in terms of getting set up, but there’s a huge opportunity to spike your sales by selling internationally.”- Lucy Marshall*

Today on the Unstoppable Entrepreneur Show:

  • Researching your product that will sell in other countries based on regulations and compliance
  • Evaluating your profit after shipping and marketing
  • Considering an analytical firm to support you with research
  • Studying the VAT (value added tax) regulations of the country you’re selling for compliance
  • Shipping techniques to handle your products
  • Knowing the listing description in the native language of the country you’re selling
  • Exploring the international market for specific consumer targets such as holidays and consumer trends

Lucy’s words of wisdom:

  • Know the currency value of your product and obtain the tools to maximize your profits
  • Research your market and product internationally and determine currency conversion

Joining me today are two extraordinary people who talk about how to deal with the Amazon claims, possible suspensions, and how to proceed from a legal standpoint. Chris McCabe is a reinstatement specialist and consultant who knows how to appropriately and efficiently proceed with Amazon claims like the back of his hand. Casey Vaughn is a business owner and licensed lawyer in New York who specializes in corporate law concerns such as intellectual property (IP) defense enforcement, trade litigation, and commercial litigation, to name a few.

In today’s episode, Chris talks about some of the intellectual property infringement cases that Amazon sellers deal with, reasons why sellers can get suspended, and how to determine whether a potential consultant can help you. He also gives an overview of a course he created to assist those who are considering pursuing the battle with Amazon’s infringement division on their own without hiring a consultant. In connection to the points raised by Chris, Casey shares the two avenues that deal with IP infringement cases, why ignoring claims is the worst thing you can do, and how you can properly deal with them.

“Keeping in mind your ultimate goal is important in all of these situations.” - Casey Vaughn

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • Good news and bad news about the Amazon infringement process
  • Characteristics of a good lawyer who can help you with these matters

  • Questions to ask before deciding to hire a reinstatement specialist
  • The significance of knowing if your lawyer is knowledgeable about the essential business practices and experienced in infringement cases with brands
  • When to know it’s time to hire a consultant and a lawyer

Three Elements of Intellectual Property Rights:

  1. Patent - protects an invention
  2. Trademark - protects a brand name used to identify goods or services
  3. Copyright - protects original artistic or literary works (e.g. photos, jewelry design)

Many entrepreneurs and business owners believe that the key to running a highly successful, profitable business is to have everything perfect – from their marketing campaigns to their product sourcing strategies. But what many people don’t realize – especially newly emerging Amazon sellers – is that perfection is the enemy of done.

Perfection can inhibit your ability to grow your business; to take it to the next level of success.

On today’s episode, I want to share with you why it’s okay to let go of the mentality that everything needs to be perfect before launching your business, product, or course idea, what can happen when you stay in the rut of waiting until everything is perfect, and how you can overcome the “perfection” mentality to advance your business to the next level.

“Don’t wait for things to be perfect. Go out there and take action.”

Today on the Unstoppable Entrepreneur Show:

  • Why perfection is not as important as implementation and progress
  • How having a “perfection-focused” mindset can often lead to burnout and giving up
  • Why waiting for perfection is actually giving your customers, clients, and brands a disservice
  • Creating time-blocking techniques
  • Triaging revenue-producing tasks
  • Mapping out what actions need to be taken and what actions have already been taken
  • Creating structures that you need to support you in taking action
  • Finding an accountability partner

Ask yourself:

  • What actions do I need to take over the next three weeks to get the results I want?
  • What are the things that are distracting me from my business?

When you’re an entrepreneur, you find ways to accomplish as much as possible in a day’s work. There are times when the tasks pile up, and nothing seems to get done. You get frustrated and overwhelmed with the amount of work that needs attending. After getting out of survival mode and start seeing things clearly, you consider delegating tasks and letting more people in your team. The next question would be whether to hire a trained professional or outsource a virtual assistant or VA?

I expand on the productivity components you need to assess, the time element in play, and questions to ask yourself before making a life-changing decision. You’ll also learn how to gauge yourself and evaluate the tasks that need delegating. Whether you’re hiring a service or a VA, remember that it is still your business and you are the captain of the ship.

Thomas Jefferson has a popular quote that says, “If you want something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done.” Entrepreneurs relate to this quote very well because they think differently and do things that defy the social norms. In fact, entrepreneurs make up some of the most unreasonable people in the world. If you step away from the negative connotation of the word “unreasonable”, you will find that it can also mean surpassing your limits to achieve your full potential. Being unreasonable means breaking free from that little voice in your head telling you to avoid risks and stay safe. It means aiming higher than what people expect of you or even what you expect of yourself.

The life of an entrepreneur is unreasonable. We are not afraid to take risks and we set out to achieve things that have not been thought of or done before. This gives us access to a life and to experiences that is not available to everyone. Embrace the positive side of being unreasonable and what you can learn from the experiences.

“Being unreasonable means living a life that’s not dictated by reasons. It’s being dictated by your commitments – by the things that you’re passionate about.”

Today’s Topic Covers:

  • The positive side of being unreasonable and the benefits you can gain from this trait as an entrepreneur.
  • How making unreasonable requests can help you improve your negotiation skills.
  • There are a thousand and more reasons why you should stop what you’re doing compared to the reasons why you should keep going. It’s up to you to decide which of these reasons drive your life.
  • How to balance your unreasonable nature to produce the results you need.
  • Having a solution mindset and looking at failure as something of value, rather than a setback.

On today’s episode, I’m joined by licensed CPA and Amazon seller Anna Hill. Anna started on Amazon as only a seller in January 2014 after deciding that she was tired of the “CPA firm rat race.” She started on Amazon during the Frozen Frenzy, and when that frenzy dwindled, she says she has learned many valuable lessons from the experience.

Today, we discuss how her mindset has evolved since the beginning of her Amazon career, how she has helped thousands of sellers navigate the uncertain and often confusing waters of finances and taxes, and her insight into pivoting our businesses as Amazon continues to change and evolve.

“If you don’t have order, it tends toward chaos.” – Anna Hill

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • Recognizing and understanding that change in business is not uncommon.
  • Why you should never invest more in your business or spend more on inventory than you can afford to lose.
  • Extenuating circumstances in business
  • Establishing an insurance policy for yourself such as a financial plan, hiring a financial planner or trusted advisor to create a benchmark framework with goals that allow for some “wiggle room.”
  • Why we believe that opportunities at Amazon will continue to improve moving forward, but it is essential to try to expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
  • Using this time to “do your homework.”
  • Why you shouldn’t make business decisions out of panic or fear.
  • Your customer isn’t always necessarily the buyer of your inventory. There are other customers to consider.
  • Why it is important to reach out and learn from other people.
  • Why it is important to make long-term strategic plans for each upcoming quarter.
  • How considering the possibilities that could happen and how you can handle those situations then writing them down can help you approach the issue better once the dust has settled.
  • Why you shouldn’t “opinion shop.”
  • Why it’s important to surround yourself with like-minded people – people wanting to rise and grow.
  • The benefits of having an accountability partner to help you balance and level your business.
  • Understanding your debt and knowing how much unsold inventory you hold.
  • Know when to outsource

Approach adversity as an opportunity instead of a wall.

It’s often easy for Amazon resellers to think of brands as just another company. So easy, in fact, that we can sometimes forget that the company is also made up of people – and people with families, children that rely on them. As we head into the 2017 trade show season, it’s important for Amazon sellers to really be present and mindful of the ecosystem of the niche they are selling in. It’s equally important that brand owners are also aware of that ecosystem as well as their part in it.

The actions that brand owners and resellers take significantly affect the way other businesses, brands, and sellers manage their business and help bring brands to the market. That’s why today, I want to talk about how the butterfly effect takes place within the reseller community and how it affects the manufacturing communities as well.

Don’t have a cash grab mentality with a brand. Have a partnership mentality.

Today’s Topic Covers:

  • The Amazon reseller community and manufacturing community are very closely intertwined.
  • Explaining to brand owners how distribution will affect their pricing, the number of counterfeits, map pricing, and other areas of their business.
  • Talking to brand owners about the importance of maintaining distribution control.
  • Many brands confuse Fulfillment by Amazon with selling directly to Amazon.
  • Explain to an emerging brand the importance of locking down their listing with brand registry, having a quality title, strong keywords, images, bullets, and description.
  • Why brands should get Enhanced Brand Content as soon as possible and how they differ from A+ listings.
  • Why brands should limit their sales to two to three Authorized Amazon Resellers.
  • Thinking of the power of association.

Today Robyn talks with Cynthia Stine – THE expert in account reinstatement on Amazon. In addition to selling on Amazon.com for the past five years, Cynthia writes a popular blog at Online Sales Step by Step and consults with Amazon sellers on their business issues. In 2014, her clients started turning to her to help them get reinstated from being suspended or banned.

Based on her success and experience getting people back to selling, she launched her official Reinstatement services in February 2015. She was flooded with business. The need is great, and the stakes are incredibly high. Many sellers fail when they write the appeal themselves, which can lead to them being permanently banned from selling. Cynthia has developed a system for analyzing sellers’ mistakes, appealing to Amazon and – in most cases – getting her clients’ businesses back up and running. It is one of the toughest and most rewarding things she’s ever done.

The start of the year can be quite overwhelming. This is the time when most business owners are scrambling to implement changes to expand their businesses this new year. Many of my clients, however, find themselves in an analysis paralysis, because they simply don’t know where and how to start improving their businesses.

Progress is a continuous process. It’s not something that can be achieved through one strategy or action. There are certain things that you will need to do consistently to ensure that your business is constantly improving. Otherwise, you will find yourself faced with the same challenges that you are struggling with now.

You start by looking within. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses to determine the things that you need to let go of and the things that you need to keep on doing for your business to move up to the next level.

Here are some tips to help set you off on the right start.

“We want to stop thinking about our time as free and start really focusing on the tasks that generate income.”

Today’s Topic Covers:

  • How to pivot from one business strategy to another
  • Be clear on your numbers. You need to start with your burn rate to understand what is needed to keep your business alive. Only then, can you understand what is needed to help it grow.
  • What are the most valuable revenue producing tasks in your business? Determine most valuable revenue producing tasks in your business.
  • As you are sourcing, you need to continuously optimize your sourcing processes. Focus on tasks that can consistently and reliably produce the results that you need.
  • You should spend the time to really optimize your processes, because that’s the only way that you’re going to have access to more scalability.
  • Don’t take things personally. Don’t allow your emotions to overwhelm you when faced with seller rejection.

How to Set Your Priorities:

  1. “If I stop doing these things, my revenue will drop.”

Focus on the things that are actually going to bring money into the business. Think of the tasks or activities that you cannot stop doing, because it will lead to a great loss in revenue. Focus on these things first.

  1. “If I stop doing these things, I will start leaking money.”

These are back office activities, which if you don’t do will lead to gradual loss of revenue.

  1. Strategic Planning

Focus on activities that will help you optimize your processes and make things more efficient. Like planning and long term strategy.

Mike Michalowicz is Back!

“By his 35th birthday Mike Michalowicz (pronounced mi-‘kal-o-wits) had founded and sold two multi-million dollar companies. Confident that he had the formula to success, he became an angel investor… and proceeded to lose his entire fortune.

Then he started all over again, driven to find better ways to grow healthy, strong companies. Among other innovative strategies, Mike created the “Profit First Formula”, a way for businesses to ensure profitability from their very next deposit forward.

Mike is now running his third million dollar venture, is a former small business columnist for The Wall Street Journal; is the former MSNBC business make-over expert; is a popular keynote speaker on innovative entrepreneurial topics; and is the author of Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan and The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, which BusinessWeek deemed “the entrepreneur’s cult classic.””

Together Mike and Robyn tell you about Mike’s new book, “Surge” and how to ride the wave of your business niche. What do successful companies—the industry leaders—have in common? They were in the right place at the right time and they moved quickly and efficiently to capitalize on their position.

Easier said than done, right? These rock star companies must have geniuses at the helm. Or were backed by an endless cash reserve. Or maybe good fortune smiled on them. These beliefs have killed countless entrepreneurial dreams. Why? Because it's easy to get tunnel vision in the day-to-night grind of business ownership, waiting and hoping for that illusive spark that suddenly grows your business.

In his newest book, Surge, Mike Michalowicz busts the myth that spotting trends is for the brilliant or lucky few. A follow-up to his anti-status-quo book, Profit First, Surge reveals the five-step process Michalowicz and others have used to identify the next wave of demand, capture its energy, and ride that wave like a pro.

Featuring stories and case studies from small business owners and entrepreneurial legends, Surge guides you through the critical step of finding the right clients and giving them the very thing they want more than anything, at the perfect time.

Surge is the first in Michalowicz's "Sweet Spot" series of books promising achievement of the entrepreneur's dream: a business that fattens the wallet, feeds the soul and streamlines what ideal customers ravenously desire. This is a “take notes” episode!

My guest on today’s episode is none other than partner of Buy Box Experts, James Thomas. James and his business partner are also the founders of the amazing yearly conference called Prosper Show that I have heard so much about lately. James worked at Amazon for almost 6 years, working and leading teams for much of that time. The last team he ran was the Amazon Services team, the team responsible for recruiting approximately 99% of all new sellers on Amazon.

During his time at Amazon, he frequently saw brand new sellers enter the platform, then, in large numbers, fail after their first four to six months – often because they either didn’t understand how Amazon worked or didn’t realize how competitive the platform was.

When he left Amazon, he and his business partner set on a journey to figure out where opportunities lied to educate people on a broad scale on ways to make the necessary investment of time and come out of the educational programs more equipped with a better understanding of what it takes to succeed as an Amazon Reseller. This is when the vision of the Prosper Show first began.

Today, on the show, James shares a lot of incredibly valuable information, tips, and strategies that Amazon resellers should consider and implement in order to stand out among the sea of competitors when talking with brand owners and executives.

“If you have the right resources, contacts, and software in place – you should be proactively asking brands about what you can do to help them in exchange for a better relationship.” – James Thomas

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • What does a reseller need to do to get a leg up on their competitors while developing a meaningful relationship with brands so they can gain access to the right kind of products, in the right quantities, with a good price?
  • What you can do to become a better brand vendor and Amazon ambassador.
  • The five major areas where brands struggle the most on Amazon
  • What a reseller can do to help brands on Amazon based on these key struggle areas.
  • Educate. Collaborate.
  • Why you should point out enough important, small details when talking with brands.
  • How educating and helping brands improve their Amazon strategy can actually help improve your business, placing you in an expert position, and allow you to partner with brands as a trusted advisor.
  • How to approach brands to get them to list all of their catalog content, and why they should.
  • Developing a rolodex of service providers that would be helpful and useful to brands and how it can impact your Amazon business.
  • Legitimate sourcing and designated brand registries.

“If you’re not thinking about how you can help the brand, chances are, your competitors are.” – James Thomas

The 5 Major Areas Where Brands Struggle on Amazon:

  1. Distribution Control
  2. Controlling Prices
  3. Brand Content
  4. Catalog Selection
  5. Catalog Inventory Levels

Elizabeth Harding was selling on Amazon off and on for years and finally decided to dive into selling full time. After the first time, she  knew she needed an accounting solution because, as she says, “I do not do math”. Elizabeth signed up for InventoryLab and loved what she saw so she decided to help out on Facebook and answer questions just for fun. Before long she was on the payroll.

Today Robyn and Elizabeth discuss why you need a solid accounting and tracking practices in your ecommerce business. They also discuss hiring practices and why it’s so critical to have systems in place to hire the right people for your business. With ideas like the “Easter egg” in the job posting, to the unusual interview questions that give you insight - Robyn takes you through everything you need to know in this actionable conversation with Elizabeth.

Have you ever wondered whether you could sell your Amazon FBA business or if Amazon would even allow a transaction like this? If so, how would it work and how would you determine how much your business is really worth to a potential buyer? On today’s episode, I’m joined by Joe Valley of Quiet Light Brokerage. Quiet Light Brokerage is a business brokerage firm that focuses 100% on internet-based businesses, and what sets them apart from their competition is that – not only do they have experience with buying online businesses, everyone at the firm has personal experience with building and selling an online business!

Joe has personally sold his online nutritional supplements company back in 2010 through Quiet Light, and today, he shares his valuable insight and tips on what Amazon sellers need to focus on before they decide to sell their business.

  2. Always assume the worst case scenario. Calculate shipping cost based off the farthest distance you think it will go and include the weight of the packaging materials.
  3. Be selective in the products you carry to avoid pricing wars.

Amazon recently announced their list of key holiday dates for 2016. This list really should have been titled “Christmas in November” because essentially that’s what it is. In previous years – like when I first started selling on Amazon – you could submit a ticket on the items you submitted if they weren’t checked into Amazon. This year, they’ve increased that time to 14 days. Previously, they wanted Black Friday and Christmas inventory set in no later than a week before the holiday date. However, this year, they’ve changed those dates: Black Friday items need to be in by November 9, and Christmas items need to be in by December 12.

A lot of changes have happened on the Amazon platform over the years, and more are likely to come over the next several years. The important thing is to never allow these changes to cause your business to hit the brakes! On today’s episode, we’re going to talk about this year’s Q4 changes, what you need to do to prepare for the Christmas in November season, and how to plan your inventory buying and selling strategies so they carry you through Q4 and straight into Q1.

“The way you play the next 4 weeks will really determine what profitability you have this Q4 season.” – Robyn Johnson

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • Using the “check in period” as a barometer to predict when you need to send in your inventory.
  • Keeping track of your buying and shipping goals.
  • Sending in small amounts of inventory, gradually increasing over time, to maximize efficiency and mitigate high Q4 storage fees.
  • Keeping your inventory quick and nimble at Amazon.
  • Multi-channel selling strategies and new-to-market brand items.
  • Considering “musical warehouse” issues
  • Sending to a distribution warehouse shortens your Q4 season.
  • Box level content can buy you approximately 8 extra days of the Christmas season.
  • Amazon shipping breaks and dimensional weight.
  • Planning your sale items – what should you consider selling?
  • Doing your homework – use a rolling 13-week cash flow and calculating your debt to income ratio.
  • Amazon loans and how to use that money wisely.
  • Selling velocity differences from December to January and how to plan your inventory to carry you into Q1.
  • Finding people that can help hold you accountable and focused on your goals.
  • Having a weekly strategic buying and shipping plan and what rules you will follow.
  • Asking for help – people want to contribute to you!

We are heading strong into the Q4 season right now. This is the time when many Amazon entrepreneurs experience something called Imposter Syndrome – the feeling of not being good enough; of feeling like everyone around you views you as more successful or more of an expert than you really feel.

If you’ve ever felt like other people see you in a certain way but you still feel like you don’t have a firm handle on things – you know what I’m talking about. But, you know, other people’s opinions and perceptions of us often change faster than we anticipate!

Today, I want to explain to you why you should stop viewing your level of success based on your gross sales every day, week, month, or year. You are worth more than your financial success.

“Your self-worth and your business success is not necessarily tied to the amount in your bank account.” – Robyn Johnson

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • How do you identify your self-worth and your rate of success?
  • The moment when you are waiting to see your hard work payoff is a really scary time.
  • You have to realize that with or without your business results – you still have worth!
  • The fact that you are willing to put yourself out there says something about who you are as a person.
  • Repeat after me: I am not an imposter. I am enough. I am just on a journey like everyone else.
  • Sometimes – especially when you feel like you’re not holding it all together – you simply have to let your team and staff run.
  • Find ways to get out of your head – take a walk, take deep breaths, do whatever it takes to get out of those negative thoughts.
  • It is really easy to get caught up in the money and lose sight of why you started your business in the first place. Take a step back, take a breath, and regroup.
  • Focus your goals around profit and the kind of life you want. Not around gross sales.
  • Stop comparing your successes and your business successes to others.
  • You always have to have something in life worth failing at. Your business is worth failing and the only way you can grow is through failure. Brush yourself off and get back on the horse.
  • The way you frame and talk about your business is going to be the way you view things.

  • The way you hold yourself and your business is incredibly important! Don’t listen to your own negative thoughts. They limit your ability. Listen to the people in your life that think you are amazing because they probably have a more objective point of view.

  • Embrace failure. It’s like fertilizer – it stinks, but it’s necessary to grow.

I’m coming to you LIVE from the amazing Retail Global Summit event and today I want to talk to you about the Black Hole Effect of the Q4 season. If you’re a seasoned Amazon Q4 seller – then you know what we’re talking about: that time when you begin to doubt yourself, decisions, and you really begin to feel like you’re trapped in a black hole!

If you’re new to the Q4 game, understand that these feelings are normal for every Amazon seller.

So, today, I wanted to talk to you all about the Black Hole Effect of Q4 and what steps you should be taking as you are preparing for the busy season that can help you mitigate these feelings and effects.

“Make sure you give yourself some grace & some space in Q4” – Robyn Johnson

  • Some products don’t see a strong lift in sales until late-October to early-November… or later
  • Consider your Q4 goals.
  • Consider how you will ensure you have enough inventory at Amazon by Black Friday to hit your December goals.
  • Think about the systems you have in place for Q4… are they ready?

  • Make sure you’re not spending more than you can lose.
  • Double-down on what is working.

5 Things to Focus on During the Q4 Calm Before the Storm:

  1. Doubling-down on things you have experience in.
  2. Closely monitor your Inventory Health Reports
  3. Buy what sells now.

Getting into the Q4 Groove

Are you ready for the Q4 craze? Q4 is almost here and many of us are already starting the planning phase of the busiest season of the year. However, if this is your first – or even second – Q4 season, it may seem a bit (or a lot!) intimidating!

Rest assured, my friends, we are all been through the same thoughts and feelings you are experiencing – and we have all managed to get through it!

On today’s episode, my dear friend Rochelle joins me on the show to dive deep into what it takes to take a strong step into the Q4 season so that you can plan for a successful quarter.

The one thing that is really predictable about Q4 is that if you wait until you see those sales come in, you won’t have enough time to react.

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • It’s a myth that prices go up in Q4
  • Our first Q4 story
  • Q4 is not the “Wild, Wild West” anymore. If you can break out of that mentality and come up with a strategic plan for Q4, you will see significant results
  • Create a game plan for yourself
  • Q4, for accountants, starts in October. For Amazon sellers, it really starts in November
  • You can position your inventory to take advantage of the sale season as early as September
  • Setting reasonable Q4 Goals
  • How much Facebook time is really work-related?
  • Why we push retail arbitrage for the Q4 season
  • What you need to do to sell retail arbitrage this Q4 season
  • Outsourcing mundane tasks or tasks that don’t really matter
  • Business integrity and working with store owners, managers, and employees

Setting Reasonable Q4 Goals:

  • Take a close look at what you’ve been doing over the last three months
  • Look at your capital
  • Look at how much you want to invest over a certain period of time
  • Look at your gross sales
  • Look at how much you currently have in Amazon
  • Look at what you are profiting on average
  • Look at your turn-rate
  • Your Q4 Goal should be anywhere from 2-5 times your normal sales

Q4 is quickly approaching. Now is the time to begin to prepare our Amazon businesses for what’s to come in Q4. We know that a lot of people are still rattled over the recent changes happening on Amazon, however, the place you want to get to – the questions you need to ask yourself – is not ‘what is wrong,’ but rather ‘how can I, regardless of the circumstances, make this work for myself and my life.

When you can get to a place where you can be something beyond your immediate circumstances, it will transform who you are and the way you make decisions within your business. So, today, I want to talk with you about the things we feel you should be thinking about, analyzing, and considering as you prepare your business for the Q4 season.

“There is no ‘Q4 Fairy with fairy dust.’ Q4 isn’t about magic, it’s about harvest.” – Robyn Johnson

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • If you really want a great Q4 harvest season, you have to take the time to do the preparations.
  • Preparations we think you should consider to prepare for Q4
  • Ask yourself: “Am I making smart buying decisions and strategies?”
  • Making a plan of action
  • Watching your inventory control
  • Understanding supply and demand
  • Streamlining your business
  • Watching your margins

Our Recommendations for Q4:

  1. Avoid big name brands or diversify

  2. If you are selling big name brands, focus on past year’s products and models

  3. Avoid liquidators and seconds

  4. Big Lots, Ross, Burlington’s, etc.

  5. Develop niche knowledge

  6. Only invest in what you can afford to lose in inventory

Do you have a plan for funding your business if something goes wrong? A plan for times when there’s a lull in your business or you have to file for bankruptcy?

We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again – knowing your numbers, income vs expense, income vs debt, is crucial when running a successful business. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, scared, or worried when thinking about checking your numbers, but a lot of businesses fail for one simple reason – they ran out of money before they could “crack the code” on success.

Knowing and frequently reviewing your income, expense, and debt numbers will let you make better, more informed decisions in the long run. You can plan for lulls in business and pay off debt even during the down periods if you know where your business stands financially.

And, it’s okay to do a little side-hustling if you need to in order to stay in the green!

Today, I want to share with you some valuable information and tips on why it’s so important to know your numbers, give you some ideas on how to generate income even when your business has hit a dry season, and provide tips on how you can keep track of your income, debt, and other business expenses.

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • Low-risk and high-risk things you can do to fund your business
  • What “self-insurance” means
  • Side-hustling is okay!
  • Business credit and why you need to get it before you need to use it.
  • Having a back-up for your back-up plan.
  • Things to consider using your Amazon loan on
  • Factoring in your business debt into the cost of your products
  • Looking closely at your debt to income ratio
  • Getting your accountant’s or bookkeeper’s advice

Women’s Entrepreneur Conference Highlights

We had the opportunity to attend the Women’s Entrepreneur Conference and sit in several workshops dedicated to Amazon sellers. On today’s show, we’d like to share some of the highlights of that conference, including details about what the future may hold for our businesses and policy changes that may occur in the near future.

Amazon is a great way to build a sustainable business and career, but sometimes the platform throws a kink in our well-oiled machine; makes changes to the rules and policies that we need to follow – and that’s okay!

As entrepreneurs, we must get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The world of ecommerce changes constantly, and selling on Amazon is no different. However, what surprises a lot of people throughout our industry is that Amazon truly cares about your business; they want to help you succeed, and that is why they have taken the time to present at the Women’s Entrepreneur Conference – to help you learn and grow your business while staying updated on potential changes and gain insight and advice from them as well as those throughout the community.

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • Amazon online and retail arbitrage policies
  • Counterfeit brands and policy changes
  • The future of Amazon Prime Marketplace
  • Amazon Business and why you should register
  • The 3 pillars of Amazon (and the possibility of a fourth!)
  • Amazon Global and how it can affect your business
  • Making lean business decisions.
  • Amazon Exclusives
  • Subscribe and Save availability
  • Self-Reinstatement
  • Brand Builders
  • Bundles and Barcode policies for bundles
  • Seller-fulfilled Prime
  • Selling big and large items
  • Selling Hazmat items

A recent article authored by our friend, Cynthia Stine, has resulted in a lot of confusion for Amazon sellers in the Retail Arbitrage space. First, we’d like to say that we have a lot of respect for Cynthia – she has been a huge supporter and teacher to the Amazon seller community. Secondly, we’d like to address that much of the hysteria, concern, and confusion surrounding this article isn’t really necessary.

Today, on the Unstoppable Entrepreneur Show, we’d like to calm the waters a bit and explain exactly what we think Cynthia meant in her article, as well as re-state what was mentioned at the Women’s Entrepreneur Conference regarding Retail Arbitrage, Counterfeit items, and the policy changes may affect your business as well as our advice on how you should consider pivoting your business model to accommodate the changes in the marketplace.

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • RA is not dead – it’s changing.
  • The rumors, misunderstandings, and misconceptions about RA is not true
  • No one really knows the truth about the future of Retail Arbitrage and Amazon
  • I spoke with someone in the Counterfeit department at Amazon who said, without prompting, that they don’t care where sellers get their products and merchandise from, as long as it comes from a place that is verified to have authentic goods.
  • 3 pillars hold up the Amazon marketplace – one of those pillars is the 3rd party Amazon marketplace (psst…. That includes us!)
  • Amazon changes policies with the end user – the customer – in mind.
  • Retail arbitrage is constantly changing; new tools have created more competition in the marketplace
  • Big changes historically cause confusion and hysteria – get to the bottom of rumors before taking them as fact.
  • Big brands are always a target for counterfeit. What can you do to pivot your business to prevent unexpected changes?
  • There are dangers in every marketplace, including RA, Private label, and wholesale. We talk about those dangers.

Kaman Cheung

Last August, I had the pleasure of meeting Kaman Cheung. Kaman was fairly new to selling private labeled products on Amazon and was adamant about finding a support group and mentoring that would really help his business grow and prosper. His success story has been an amazing inspiration to many people throughout the ecommerce community.

Kaman first started dabbling in entrepreneurship and Amazon private labelling a few years ago – as a side project, although he didn’t put much stock into it at first. At least until he lost his corporate job following a company acquisition that ultimately resulted in the termination of the entire staff of the company he worked for. After a few months, and with the support of his wife, he took the plunge to try selling on Amazon again.

Kaman’s professional experience prior to becoming an Amazon seller was in product management, and he was able to utilize this experience to help him grow his business. Today, he shares his story with us, talks about how his business has grown over the last 18 months, and explains why he feels that “leaning into your fear” can often be the most beneficial thing you can do for your business.

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • How finding a mentor and joining a support group can significantly impact your business.
  • What hurdles and plateaus Kaman has had to overcome to find his way to success.
  • How focusing on one niche at a time can help transform your business.
  • Why he put a time limit on trying new things before moving on to something else?
  • Team building strategies and how finding your “opposite” can help you balance the scales.

“Fear should be used as a light, a guide, instead of something to run away from.” – Kaman Cheung

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is whether or not you should have multiple streams of income while running your Amazon e-commerce business. Just about every time we get asked this question, we counter it with another: “How able are you to pivot your business model?”

In today’s episode, Robyn shares her insight into pivoting, what you need to do to pivot your business model, and why it is okay to have multiple streams of income that are not related to your Amazon business to help grow your business and achieve your goals.

Pivoting often goes hand in hand with outsourcing. After all, if you’re too busy doing all of the work for your business – being a solopreneur – then how can you find the time to pivot your Amazon business as the marketplace evolves? Like outsourcing, once you get established in the marketplace, it is important to pivot your business model to continue growing and expanding your business.

Let’s face it, if there is one thing that is predictable in the e-commerce industry, it’s that there will be frequent, consistent changes as years go by. To avoid having your business and products become non-viable throughout these marketplace changes, you need to proactively change your business model as the marketplace changes. You need to be flexible.

So, how do you remain consistent and fluid in an ever-changing marketplace?

Every year, evaluate your business model – asking yourself these questions:

  1. Is this still the best marketplace to sell my products?
  2. Is my sourcing method still working?
  3. Am I stuck on what used to work before, but is no longer providing the same results?
  4. Have I given another method a fair enough shot to determine whether or not it could be a viable alternative?
  5. Am I taking some money out of my Amazon business to diversify or create a savings for me to insure myself in case something happens to my Amazon account or business?
  6. Am I still using the right tax entity?
  7. Is my accountant still the right size for my business’ needs?
  8. Is my staff still the right staffing level?
  9. Is my inventory turn rate appropriate?

Remember, managing your inventory turn rate has never been more important. However, it can be one of the easiest pivots to overlook if you’re too busy “doing” and haven’t dedicated adequate time to evaluate the marketplace.

I’m often asked the question, “How do you prioritize and take care of your self – your family – while moving your business forward?” On today’s episode, I want to talk with you about the power of outsourcing, and how outsourcing smaller tasks to other people can help free up some time in your busy day to focus on other important areas in your life.

As your Amazon business grows, you will quickly begin to realize that there is simply not enough hours in a day to juggle the many tasks and responsibilities you have as a business owner. From packing and shipping, to sourcing, marketing and advertising – not to mention personal responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, and washing laundry – your day is jam packed with responsibilities and tasks.

It can be a lot to juggle, and you may begin to feel overwhelmed.

Outsourcing various tasks for your business or personal life can be the secret to your success as an entrepreneur. Here’s how.

Today’s Topics Cover:

  • Needs vs. Wants
  • List making – how making daily task lists can help your business grow
  • Prioritizing
  • Creating systems
  • Outsourcing – when and how to outsource tasks

Making a list, and checking it twice:

Keeping a list and checking things off is a really underrated skill.

Make a list of everything you do throughout your day – for your business and for your family. Then, identify what is important, and what can wait until later.

  • Priority – revenue generating tasks like packing and shipping, sourcing products, etc.
  • Priority – family-centric activities like attending Open House Night, parent-teacher conferences, and your daughter’s dance recital or your son’s football practices
  • Non-Priority – reorganizing your kitchen cabinets

Prioritize your list based on what you need to get done every day in order to maintain your income versus things you simply want to accomplish. The “wants” can wait.

When you stay a solopreneur, you set the revenue ceiling. The sky is not the limit, until you outsource.

You Must Be Present to Win

Have you ever heard the story about the man who wanted to win the lottery, but never bought a ticket? That’s how life is too. Today Robyn talks about being present in your life and in your work and, as uncomfortable as it can sometimes seem, taking credit for the hard work you’ve put into your business. What often times looks like luck to the casual observer or the new seller is actually hours, days, months, and years of hard, persistent work.

Are you willing to stand up and participate in your life so you can have the life that you want? The acknowledgment that you want? Amazon has a lot of “secret agent” sellers and the difference between standing up and standing out in your business and secret agent Amazon sellers – those who stand up make connections that others don’t. Making it known that you are available to help companies with their Amazon presence takes letting people know what you’re doing. Robyn talks about the benefits of being really vocal about being an Amazon seller – and being vocal about the amount of work involved.

What do you need to do to have the massive success you want? Are you structuring your day to maximize your income? Are you really acquainted with your numbers and are you ready for the long term storage fees? The time is now – get prepared and get organized.

Now that you’re getting organized – Robyn would love to see you at ASD in Las Vegas! Email Excellence@bestfromthenest.com to get the suite number and come on up and hang out with the gang. There will be speakers, panels, and Q&A sessions! So if you’re going to be in Vegas for ASD – email Robyn!

Are you trying to get everything perfect before you start playing full out?  Today Robyn talks about why that strategy will never get you in to the game. Robyn explains that you must have that time in the trenches in order to learn what your business needs, and what systems will best support you as you grow and evolve. No one starts out knowing everything and doing everything perfectly and it’s those “failures” (that aren’t really failing at all) that teach you what you need to do – and in the long run – perfect those nimble systems you need to grow.

So get in there!  Make the mistakes and make them fast – and don’t be afraid of the word failure – it’s just a word. Doing it is the best way to learn it – so just do it!

Get ready for the reals.

Today Robyn talks about her experience sitting with a table full of millionaires, and how so many of them, with books they’ve written, mentorship, and advice, have had an enormous impact on her life and her business. Robyn makes the very important point that it isn’t true that “you can either be rich, or be a good person, but you can’t be both”.

It’s not the money that matters – it’s what all these amazing people are doing with that resource – they’re helping people on a global scale. Robyn also makes the critical point that you don’t have to be making a difference on the global stage because the work you do in your life, with your family, with your children, with the people you meet every day cannot be undervalued. Everyone, everywhere makes a difference and at the end of the day, millionaire or not, if you’ve done your best to be of service, if you’ve played full out and given it everything you’ve got – you’re wealthy.
