Here are some tips of what you can do to prevent forest fires: -Check your tires. proper tread so if it blows, cause sparks. -Trailers: secure the trailer chains - don't let them drag! -General vehicle maintenance. Make sure you have enough coolant & oil. -Pull off in low or no vegetation areas due to the undercarriage of motorized vehicles can easily start fires. -Stay on established trails and roads.

Matt speaks with Travis Edwards, the Kuna FFA Advisor & Agricultural Teacher. Travis grew up on a dairy farm and enjoyed learning from his Ag Teachers throughout his formative years.
Kuna has approximately 500 students enrolled in FFA programs, with 5 Ag teachers in the department. Roughly 1/3 of the students at Kuna Highschool are involved in FFA or Ag Classes. That percentage has been true for decades.
The Ag programs have something for everybody & Travis states that their primary focus is to prepare leaders no matter the direction the students go in.
This week, Matt speaks with Jessica Anderson, Communications Specialist and PAC Coordinator at the Amalgamated Sugar Company. Jessica talks about the history of the Amalgamated Sugar Beet factory as well as her own farming background and the easy transition to work with "her people." Twelve percent of refined sugar comes from the Amalgamated sugar company, which means yes, we have a sweet tooth, especially this time of year.

A very well known southern Idaho cattle rancher Guy Coylerof Guy Coyler Herefords and Angus in Bruneau, Idaho speaks to Matt about his life on the ranch. With secondary fencing, which goes on the interior of your property, Dan talks about why electric fencing is so important. When horses, goats, cattle, or even chickens want to get on the other side, electric fencing will help keep them contained and keep them where they are supposed to be.

In this episode, Matt speaks with Brigitta Gruenberg, Food Safety Modernization Act Program Manager for the Idaho Department of Agriculture and Chanel Tewalt, Chief of Operations at the Idaho Department of Agriculture, about the Produce Safety Rule and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), including its impact on farms small and large.
FSMA is the United States' most significant change to federal food safety laws since 1938. FSMA takes a proactive approach to preventing foodborne illness. It was signed into United States federal law on January 4, 2011. The law is being rolled out slowly so that farmers would have time to implement it.
Specifically, Matt and his guests about a portion of the FSMA called the Produce Safety Rule that sets standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce for human consumption.
Although the final version of the Produce Safety Rule went into effect January 26, 2016, the first large-scale compliance date for large farms began on January 26, 2018. Produce inspections will begin in 2019.

One of the biggest issues for power equipment like mowers, trimmers, blowers, and more is that they are not prepared for the winter and when Spring does come there are issues. For example, gasoline left in a tank over the winter can start breaking down in just a month or two. Winter prep means more than just draining the gas, but you also need to get the gas out of the carbonator.
In this episode, Matt speaks with Dr. Brett Bauscher, DVM, about keeping and protecting our pets during the winter. You might think that your pet, which is covered in fur, is just fine outside, but that is not necessarily true. In fact, for the most part, your pet might feel about as comfortable as you do outside.

Performance horses, as an example, need a different diet than a maintenance horse that may not get daily exercise. There are also reproductively active horses, like mares entering the last trimester of pregnancy, that need extra nutrition.

In this episode, Matt is talking all about pickling with Sydney Anderson, an Advanced Master Food Safety Advisor with the Ada County extension. Pickling is one of the best ways to preserve foods. It rides the food harmful bacteria and extends the food's life by creating an acidic environment or by using an anaerobic fermentation in a salt brine. Pickling also adds and provides for great expression in flavors.

It might seem like an odd time to talk about frost-proof water hydrants, but if you want to be able to water your livestock next winter, you want to make certain these hydrants are ready to go now.
A frost-free hydrant is designed to drain water back into the ground below the freeze line. In this way, a frost-free hydrant is better for watering livestock than a standard spigot since you can use it in the dead of winter without worrying about frozen pipes.
Frost-free hydrants need to be buried deep the ground, perhaps, more than six feet deep in some cases. And there may be more to them than you thought.
