And so, our tale is nearly over. We have heard of angels and shepherds, of Magi and babies, of a wicked king and a pure mother, of an old man who waited and an old woman who prayed. And what of us? How have we been changed by this story? How has its telling lifted our spirits in the dark days of our times?

After the darkness comes the light. After the loneliness, the warmth of kinship, after despair the glimmer of hope for the future and those wait patiently find promises are fulfilled.

The baby grows up. He is no longer the child in the manger, the infant so lowly. But perhaps it is more comfortable to leave him there, and not confront the challenge of who he is to become. Because to confront that challenge means having to grasp the very personal nature of what it all means.

Shepherds, gazing at the sky, astounded by what they have seen and heard. How long do they lie there, taking in what has happened before shifting their gaze to earth, to the sheep, to one another? We ponder this news afresh with them, and with Mary.
