Being ready for the next opportunity does not guarantee you get it. Steve learned that the hard way - outperformed for a role he thought was already his, by someone who simply showed up to win that day.
That is the first of three things retail leaders need to hear right now.
The second: 30,000 people at Oracle got a 6am email that changed everything. AI is not just a tech story. It is a retail story. And the leaders who survive it are not the ones who fear it — they are the ones who have built a valued opinion on the business that no algorithm can replace.
The third: the glossing-over trap. Half-answers. Hoping problems resolve themselves. Quietly losing your best people while you are busy running the operation. Steve has been there. He tells you what it cost him and how to stop before it costs you the same.
Three real conversations in one episode. No script. Just what retail leaders need to hear.

The Discipline to Say No (The Decision That Determines Everything)
This is the decision most leaders avoid.
After the conferences. After the ideas. After the pressure to “look at everything.”
Part IV is about the one move that determines whether all of this turns into leverage or just more noise.
In this episode, I break down why conferences expand possibility, but leadership requires subtraction. Why saying “we’re looking at everything” is the safest answer and the most dangerous one. And why the strongest leaders don’t win by adding more, but by being brutally clear about what they will not pursue.
We close the series by connecting all four decisions and laying out the real consequences. When leaders choose focus, decisions get sharper, teams move with confidence, and execution becomes intentional. When they don’t, momentum stalls, ideas end up in pilot purgatory, and leaders feel pressure without progress.
Key learnings:
This episode isn’t about inspiration.
It’s about drawing the line that changes how the year actually plays out.

Part II is about the moment most leaders mishandle.
After a conference, leaders return energized. New ideas. New language. New urgency.
And almost immediately, they start pushing initiatives into an organization that hasn’t changed its capacity, priorities, or decision rules.
In this episode, I break down why post-conference optimism hides execution friction, and why execution is always the first thing to break when leaders confuse excitement with readiness.
You’ll hear why real innovation doesn’t happen when ideas are added, but when excess assumptions, excess work, and excess noise are removed. We talk about why operational leaders must be at the table early, how store and field realities expose weak strategy fast, and what disciplined leaders do differently before launching anything new.
Key learnings:
This is not about killing ideas.
It’s about making sure the right ones survive reality.

Part III is about the mistake that kills most conference ideas.
Leaders come back with insights, slides, notes, and energy. They share the information. They post about it. They talk about it.
And then nothing changes.
In this episode, I break down why ideas don’t fail because they’re bad, they fail because no one owns them. Conferences create inspiration. Organizations require ownership.
We talk about why initiatives create motion but ownership creates outcomes, why leaders must embed themselves in the learning process instead of outsourcing it to their teams, and how ideas decay when accountability is vague or shared by “everyone.”
Key learnings:
This episode is about turning insight into action that survives the real world.

After NRF: Decide the Real Problem (Part 1 of 4)
Most conferences don’t fail because the ideas are bad.
They fail because leaders come back with volume instead of judgment.
NRF expands what feels possible. Leadership is deciding what actually matters.
In Part 1 of this four-part series, Steve Worthy focuses on the first and most important post-conference decision: deciding the real problem you’re solving this year.
NRF pushes solutions. Vendors do their job well. The risk for leaders is acting before reality is clearly defined.
This episode explores:
This isn’t about doing more after NRF.
It’s about deciding better before momentum turns into noise.

There were years when things looked fine from the outside, but they weren’t fine.
Professionally, I was doing the work. Personally, I was carrying more than I should have. I had a coach, a tighter inner circle, and the right intentions, but I still found myself drifting. New ideas kept pulling at me. New opportunities kept showing up. And I didn’t have a reliable way to decide what deserved my energy and what didn’t.
That’s when I started using a Word of the Year.
Not because I needed inspiration. I needed something stable. Something I could come back to when everything felt urgent and nothing felt anchored.
Over time, that one-word constraint became a way to frame my decisions, my behavior, and how I showed up as a leader. It helped me see where I was overextending, where I was hesitating, and where I was misaligned without realizing it.
In this episode, I share my word for 2026, Steadfast, and why it emerged after several years of intentionality, growth, and momentum. At this stage, staying the course, preparing deliberately, and building patiently matters more than acceleration.
I also walk through how I choose a word using a gap analysis, why most senior leaders resist the discipline this requires, and how pressure-testing the word with people who know you well makes all the difference.
This isn’t a tactic. It’s a way to lead with more consistency when the environment keeps changing.

Some stores just stop you.
You walk in, and for a moment—maybe longer—you forget you're in a place built to sell. You're in something more. A feeling. A point of view. A brand that knows who it is.
This episode is a love letter to those stores—and the people who know how to spot them.
Steve sits down with two of his favorite retail minds (and friends), Jack Stratton and Ian Scott, for a fast-moving conversation that feels more like a pub chat than a panel. Together, they unpack what they’ve seen, what leaders keep missing, and why a well-done retail safari might be one of the most underused leadership tools in the industry.
A deeper look at:
You'll hear real stories, playful jabs, and honest truths about what it takes to build—and notice—a store that makes people feel something.
For retail leaders wondering how to stay inspired, how to lead store teams with more empathy, or how to reconnect with the part of retail that still excites them—this episode is a reminder: stores are still cool. You just have to know where to look.

When Retail Stops Growing You, What’s Next?
No one tells you what happens when you outgrow your company.
You hit every metric, you do everything right, and yet the growth stops. Your company still expects results, but they’re not developing you. They’re not stretching you. And if you’re being honest, you’re starting to feel it.
The hard truth? Most senior leaders won’t admit when they’ve hit this wall. They keep showing up, running the same play, hoping something shifts. But real leadership isn’t just about surviving in a system that stopped investing in you, it’s about taking control of your next move.
In this episode, I break down:
This one’s for the leaders who know they need something different—but aren’t waiting around for someone else to create it.

In today's episode, titled "HQ vs. Store: Bridging the Divide," we finish our two-part series - Everything Works at HQ!
We're going to explore the critical need for building a shared vision between your retail stores and corporate headquarters. The secret lies with effective communication and alignment.
Central to our discussion will be how stores and headquarters can develop a common language to enhance understanding, build relationships, and ensure that execution of corporate strategies at the store level is effective and seamless.
I outline a practical 'speed dating' approach to connect the store level with various roles at HQ, emphasizing the value of rapport and communication to overcome the execution disconnect. I share vital insights that HQ wishes to convey to stores, and vice versa, shedding light on the assumptions that may hinder the rollout of new programs.
The episode doesn't shy away from the complexities of inventory management or the pitfalls of poor communication techniques. Rather, I provide a framework to articulate the "why" behind KPIs and metrics, turning data literacy into a powerful tool for retail leaders.
And finally, I examine the North Star concept. This is what it looks and feels like when HQ and Stores have are in alignment, collaborative, and both provide solutions-oriented leadership for mutual success.
So grab your notepads and prepare to change the way you think about the relationship between HQ and Stores.
This episode charts a new course to a more resilient, adaptable, and united future.

US vs THEM!
This battle in retail has been in existence since Retail began.
US - Stores vs THEM - Home Office.
Why can’t they see eye to eye?
What has hindered these two teams from establishing a mutually beneficial and successful relationship?
This two-part series - Everything Works at HQ. Part one titled “What HQ can learn from Stores”, is a candid exploration of the oft-overlooked wisdom that our stores hold for corporate headquarters. The goal is to bridge the gap between corporate strategies and the challenges our store teams face daily.
I’ll unpack a crucial dialogue on the disconnect between HQ's drive for business growth and the on-the-ground reality of our stores.
In this episode, I discuss the significance of effective communication, the urgent call for a human-centric approach to training and leadership, and the revelation of a leadership gap where store leaders yearn for real growth and development opportunities.
I also help HQ and stores understand the need for "safe people" over just "safe spaces," pushing for transparency in feedback and a genuine connection between employees and management.
Lastly, l explore the "North Star" concept, aiming for that unified vision that propels Home Office and Stores towards cohesive success.
Are you a retail leader grappling with disconnection? Do you feel the stark contrast between your retail playbook and the actual game on the floor? Stay tuned as we dissect these challenges and offer actionable insights, including why external coaching may be the lifeline your team needs.
Join us for a journey into the heart of retail where it's not just about what HQ dictates, but about listening, understanding the 'why,' and recognizing the true pace and urgency that define our stores.

As a retail leader, your success is determined by the relationships you cultivate and encircle yourself with. So, how do you ensure that you are surrounded by the right people?
Let's talk about the Law of Explosive Growth in this episode and learn how to grow, develop, export, and even retain great talent and future leaders from your own team.
Stay tuned!
Key Highlights
[00:01] A leader is only as good as whom they surround themselves with
[00:49] The concept of Explosive Growth
[04:37] Grow, develop, and export great talent
[05:16] It’s not about followers; it’s about growing leaders
[10:00] The first person that you need to learn how to lead is yourself.
[12:00] If you grow a team, your organization can also experience growth.
[15:33] If you develop leaders, your organization can achieve explosive growth.
[17:55] How to retain the leaders that you hire.
[20:48] What does great talent look like?
Notable Quotes
● Explosive growth is the concept and idea of taking yourself from where you are to where you want to be times x.
● The first person that you need to learn how to lead is yourself. And the most difficult person to lead is going to be yourself because you are fighting against everything inside of you that wants to then wants to do something different.
● When you want to experience explosive growth, you have to have a burning desire inside to keep and retain the great talent that you hire and make sure that you see them winning on a consistent basis.
● If you are consistent with your methodology for hiring people, for understanding what that looks like, then I think it's important that your team has an understanding of that as well.
● The worst thing that you can do is to not see that you need to develop great leaders so that you can have consistent explosive growth wherever you go.
● The areas of your weakness as a leader can become exploited if you don't take the time to realize what they are; if you don't take the time to assess who you are, where you are, and where you want to go.

**Trust is the foundation of leadership. It is earned or it isn’t.
The LAW OF SOLID GROUND is a case for building a solid character, living with integrity, authenticity and discipline.
Character is the source of trust. We build our character by being scrupulously honest, even when it hurts.
To be authentic, we must be ourselves with everyone, not pretending to be something that we aren’t. Discipline comes from doing what needs to be done whether we like it or not.**As a retail leadership, you are as good as your word and your ability to keep. Your talents will only get you so far. If you are a hands-on leader, setting endcaps, doing planograms, or as a field leader, you devote a ton of time walking stores and helping them solve problems. This law of Solid Ground will help you maintain the respect and admiration of your team.
However, if are new to leadership and have yet to get the buy-in of your team. this law will be a great starting point for you.
Character cannot develop in an environment in which ethical decisions are forced upon the individual. Character is a product of judgment, discretion, and choice — born from a man’s free agency.
This is to say that the choices every single person makes influence the world around him, and that the existence of a virtuous society is predicated on the virtue of each of its individual members.
How to Keep your Character:
1. Strive to be the same person in front of the crowd as you are behind the scenes
2. Be very careful not to conform
Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
3. Learn to value the process of building your character

Leadership is a process and it takes time to master, there’s no way around the process
LAW OF ADDITION
The law of addition focuses on how to add value to your team in order to create more leaders to grow. Leaders who pour into their teams create more leaders. We know we can use more authentic leadership these days.
True leaders ask “How can I serve?” Because they are focused on service, it’s not so much about “What’s in it for me.”
As a retail leader, a large portion of your role is to invest in your team beyond their paycheck. The law of addition provides you an idea of how to serve your team
Three tips on how t add value to your team
The premise of adding value to the lives of your team members is that you intentionally add impact and substance. You cannot give what you don’t have.
“Inexperienced leaders are quick to lead before knowing anything about the people they intend to lead. But mature leaders listen, learn, and then lead.” John C. Maxwell
Many leaders are too quick to take charge. A good leader takes the opportunity to listen to what every person believes is important and then leads.
“The bottom line in leadership isn’t how far we advance ourselves but how far we advance others,” John C. Maxwell wrote. Great leaders derive pleasure from making life better for others by adding value to them. They are intentional about adding merit and making it part of their core values.
Developing and executing influence and being active in your own journey are keys to success

LAW OF THE LID
Overview:
The law states that how well you lead determines how effective you are. The lower your ability to lead, the lower the lid on your potential. The higher your ability to lead, the higher the lid on your potential. Your leadership ability always determines your effectiveness and the potential impact on your organization.

5 LEVELS OF LEADERSHIP
Level 1 — PositionThe lowest level of leadership—the entry-level, if you will—is Position. It’s the only level that requires no ability or effort to achieve. After all, anyone can be appointed to a position!
People who remain on the position level may find it difficult to work with volunteers. Why? Because position does not automatically result in influence, and volunteers are aware that they don’t have to follow anyone. They truly only follow if they want to.
Level 2 — PermissionLevel 2 is based on relationships. At this level, people choose to follow because they want to. In other words, they give the leader Permission to lead them. To grow at this level, leaders work on getting to know their people and connecting with them. You can’t lead without people, which means you need to learn to like people if you want to lead well!
Level 3 — ProductionThe best leaders know how to motivate their people to GTD – get things done! And getting things done is what Level 3 is all about. On this level, leaders who produce results build their influence and credibility. People still follow because they want to, but they do it because of more than the relationship. People follow Level 3 leaders because of their track record.
Level 4 — People DevelopmentLevel 4 can be summed up in one word: reproduction. Your goal at this level is to identify and develop as many leaders as you can by investing in them and helping them grow.
The reason is simple: When there are more leaders, more of the organization’s mission can be accomplished. When you invest in them, you can reproduce yourself.
Level 5 — PersonhoodThe highest level of leadership is also the most challenging to attain. It requires longevity as well as intentionality. You simply can’t reach Level 5 unless you are willing to invest your life into the lives of others for the long haul. But if you stick with it, if you continually focus on both growing yourself at every level, and developing leaders who are willing and able to develop other leaders, you may find yourself at the Pinnacle.

NARRATIVE
Every year, season, we create declarations on either self improvement, varying goals we want to accomplish or visions we desire to occur in our lives. We place our HOPE a desired outcome. Now HOPE by itself can be misleading, because it's not a strategy. However, it's a vital part of your leadership journey.
We discuss the four areas below:
DEFINE HOPE
Hope is an optimistic expectation of a favorable outcome regarding a given circumstance.
Denial is closing your eyes to the truth because you don't like it or can't deal with it. Hope only becomes denial when you give up fighting and start hiding.
Hope is not a strategy
The core of the “hope is not a strategy” mindset (or, sometimes, “hope is not a plan” or “hope is not a course of action”) carries some validity.
Top thing people hope for :
PERCEIVED DOWNFALLS OF HOPE
III. What can hope do for you as a leader

Trust is the faith you have in someone that they will always remain loyal, honest and sincere and will not deliberately do anything to harm you.
To trust someone means that you can rely on them and are comfortable confiding in them because you feel safe with them.
Both sides of the trust coin impact a leader's ability to inspire and motivate employees. When people trust you, they have confidence in your decisions. Even in uncertainty, they will be influenced by your leadership. That is because they expect you to do what you say you'll do

Part 3 of 3 Series - In this episode we have special guest Nan Henson, Founder of Enneagram Atlanta. We unpack the idea of decision-making by personality type and explore the path to decision making, which is the most important of any final decision. We begin by discussing a overview of the Enneagram and its foundational principles and how it impacts each individual differently. Then we discuss Types 5 - The Investigator, 6 - The Loyalist, 7 - The Enthusiast.
ENNEAGRAM PERSONALITY MODEL⠀
⠀
There are many great maps of personality – too many to list. These maps describe how we look on the outside, our landscaping or our terrain. They help us see our particular traits, our actions and reactions, our coping methods and our style of speaking. ⠀
⠀
What makes the Enneagram different is that it also gives us a Map for what is going on inside (our internal landscape or terrain). It helps us understand WHY we do the things we do and what is driving us. It shows us the lens through which we see the world and gives us a look through others’ lenses. It is a powerful Map that shows us what it feels like to be in our own skin and it offers a way to understand others in theirs.⠀

Let’s Demystify Mentorship vs Sponsorship - Once and for All!
On Today’s episode - Pt. Two - we will demystify and take a deep dive into the mentor and sponsor relationship and define their importance along the leadership journey. We Set the stage and focus on Mentor and Sponsorship as it relates to Diversity.
These two episodes are dedicated in loving memory to my good friend and mentor Jim Hogan a loving husband, father and leader. Jim impacted my life in so many ways from our love of sports, leadership and developing people. But most of all his love of life and sense of humor were the true genius of his leadership and why so many people loved him. Jim Hogan, a great husband, father, leader and friend.
Episode Overview
Mentor and Sponsor Relationships are:
1. Defined relationships
2. Structured and intentional with a common goal
3. Pragmatic and sensible
Mentoring:
• can expose diverse individuals into new and insightful professional realms
• Mentorship is not limited to just the workplace. In some organizations, Diversity pipelines can be weak. It’s important that non-diverse leaders assist in mentoring outside of the organization for a greater impact.
Sponsorship:
• Is more effective than mentoring in delivering real-world results because they directly create career progress
• A sponsor can help take charge of the professional experiences and positioning for your career
In part two we will discuss it from three perspectives:
✓ Leadership second their impact on leaders
✓ Coaching - provide some practical application some do’s and don’ts related to mentors/mentees and sponsorship
