ON THE EPISODEI’m joined by Hollie Warren, the founder of a creative magazine called, Wishbone Words and a fellow OI’er (Osteogenesis Imperfecta). This vulnerable episode dives in deep into the realities of living with OI, despite having different Types of OI (which we explain a bit) and living in different countries, our stories cross many similar paths. Today we’re taking about Hollie’s magazine, Wishbone Words and connecting through OI. This is the longest episode on my podcast, which I’m unsurprised about because when Hollie and I start talking, we never want to stop. So buckle up, this is about to get vulnerable.
Hollie is a 24 year old from The Lake District in England, she has Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Scoliosis (has been rodded) and a visual impairment. Upon completing her Creative Writing degree, she decided starting an online creative writing magazine for disabled and chronically ill creatives to share their talents and stories. Her website and first issue is JUST launched and is now available at www.wishbonewords.com

ON THE EPISODE
How can we help ourselves with our emotional regulation through creativity? Well, today I provide insight on identifying our Zones of Regulation (Green, Blue, Yellow and Red Zones) and how we can use them to our advantage to make art as well as helping support those emotions we're experiencing in the moment. I also give you prompts to help you find the best creative outlet for yourself because we all have different creative interests and sensory sensitivities that need to be taken into consideration for our personal needs.

IN THE EPISODE
In episode 4, I talked about the levels of inclusion. Today I want to dive into true inclusion, I have altered a little bit of what I said from that last episode to be more clear and concise, but it is the same kind of idea.
Inclusion is the expectancy of anything and everything.
Inclusion is adaptability.
Inclusion is creativity.
Inclusion is learning.
If we can utilize these we are practicing true inclusion. The idea of the levels are to see where we are at and work our way towards true inclusion. Originally, I had listed out 5 levels of inclusion but in actuality, there are 4 sup-parts of non-inclusive and 1 true inclusion.
At the end of the episode, I give helpful notes and tell you how you can practice true inclusion.

IN THIS EPISODEMelinda Arnost is a K-3 Intervention Specialist who works in an autism unit in a public school in Ohio. Currently, she is embracing inclusion throughout her school by providing students with whole group social-emotional lessons in the general education classrooms. Data has shown all students are benefiting from these impactful lessons. The negative behaviors are decreasing while kindness, inclusivity and compassion are increasing! Students with unique abilities are staying the general education classrooms longer, mastering their goals, and are truly included in their classrooms.
Due to this success, Melinda is publishing a book next month called, "Empowering Inclusion: The Tool Teachers Need to Help All Students Succeed" which is a guide for teachers to build relationships and push for an inclusive environment. Inclusion is much more than just having students that may appear different occupying a seat in the general education classroom. When Melinda is not teaching or writing, she is found running extreme distances (over a marathon!), painting murals on walls or playing in her garden.

IN THIS EPISODE
Last week in my episode with Lisa Di Domenico, we brought up so many great topics, one being messy action. I wanted to delve into taking messy action, because, well, that’s my jam, I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t taken messy action, if I hadn’t gone ahead and just started the damn thing! Taking messy action means that we know what we have to do, but we know that it doesn’t need to be perfect. When I think of messy action I am thinking about all the times that I knew what I needed to do, but didn’t really know how or feel totally confident in what I was about to do.
You’re not taking messy action because 1. You believe it needs to be perfect and 2. You believe you don’t know how.
Today, I'm giving you steps to start taking messy action, with lots of real life experiences and why you need to be doing it now!

IN THIS EPISODEToday, we're talking about those pesky creative limitations that everyone has, you know that self talk that stops you from creating to your full potential. It might have started passively, somewhere along the way you believed you aren't an artist, or there was a pivotal moment that stopped you or hindered your creative process. Regardless, we can work through these limitations and start living a creative life. I've been an artist my entire life, through and through, yet I still hindered my creative process by picking up limitations along the way.
Teaching my own inclusive community art classes freed me from my limitations because it started to open my eyes to the limitations that held me back and I did not want to pass onto my students. I wanted to provide them with the most value and experience without learning boundaries and refining their creativity. As I worked through this, I began to realize these pesky limitations were holding me back from my potential. Then I began to work through them. Listen to the full episode to start identifying and working through your creative limitations so start living a creative life too.

IN THIS EPISODE
Today we are going to start to talk about what it means to make connections through art! Inclusive community art classes are built on 4 pillars of education, mental health, community and inclusion, but what does that mean? So today we’re discussing education.
What does it mean to connect art and education?
Art is a bit sneaky when we use it as a tool for learning, we are having so much fun exploring and playing with our medium that we don’t even notice that we’re learning until we’ve done it, and the pride and joy that comes from that, it’s incredible. Building confidence and joy for the love of learning all through creativity.
We are constantly learning— Education does not just happen in schooling or courses, we learn constantly through life through books, media, relationships, schooling, family. Learning can happen passively or actively through observation and intentional growth, be open to the process and exploration of learning.
Creativity is how to engage and inspire learning, through art we can inspire education and creative living.
Listen to the episode to hear lots of examples of how I use and have used art as a fun and engaging tool to learn!

ON THE EPISODE
In today's episode, we're talking about how to find and own your super powers!
Imagine for a minute that Wonder Woman didn't know her super powers, or sat in jealousy or didn't believe in herself; what would happen? She wouldn't be able to help save the people that she does in her super way to save the day. Now imagine what you could do if you knew and believed in yours? How much of an impact could you make?
I spent a long time wondering how I could make a positive impact through my own business. I didn’t know how or believe that I already had the skill set to make a meaningful difference. Little did I know at the time, by taking my passion, experience and expertise, I was creating a radical impact for my community. I could have ignored my super powers and stayed at home, but no, I learned them as I went and I’m constantly discovering new skills.
There are 4 key ways to finding and owning our super powers.
1. Ask your people
2. Follow what you love
3. Give yourself credit
4. Own what you do, not others

IN THE EPISODE
Today, we talk about the 5 levels of inclusion, Non-Inclusive, Attempted Inclusion, Inclusive 1:1, Inclusive Groups and Inclusive Community, providing examples of what each level of inclusion means for us and our communities. Inclusion is diversity because if we don’t see that people are ALL different, then we don't’ see anyone at all. To change this, we need to show others how to be inclusive by leading a path and by providing the safe place that our communities need.
Non-InclusiveThis is when we care only about the typical, the able, the majority, our own experience, white traditional experience.
Inclusion is not proximity. Inclusion is not an inconvenience.
Attempted inclusionThis is when we try to include people but don’t understand, or care if they aren’t actually included. When we don’t provide the tools, when we are just “being nice” or helping others do what the majority are doing.
Inclusivity in a 1:1 environmentThis is surface level inclusion, you can be inclusive 1:1 but that doesn’t translate to groups or community or you are partially inclusive, you’ve attempted and succeeded but you don’t necessarily know why or how.
Inclusivity in a group settingI think an inclusive group and community might be seen as very similar, but the difference is a group would be more like a classroom, extended family or an event whereas a school or community centre, a neighbourhood or town would be community. Basically, a group is smaller scale and a community is bigger scale. In our society the current way our world is, inclusive groups and communities have a huge responsibility of teaching what inclusion means.
Inclusivity in community / societyThe larger scale of groups is community, when we provide an inclusive community, we are providing an open, safe and accessible space for people to come and not just feel, but be included. Creating an open, diverse, accessible safe space for everyone to learn, grow, explore, create and thrive in society.

IN THE EPISODE
Symbolic vs. Realistic drawing
Children have 2 types of drawing and BOTH should be celebrated and encouraged
Symbolic drawingChildren draw with a story. They are learning language, story telling and relationships. They are unconcerned with the marks they make on the paper so you should as well.
Example of symbolic drawing
The child shows you a drawing that may not be legible or is just basic shapes or scribbles. A child tells you "this is the wind blowing my hat off at the beach and daddy caught it in the water"
Realistic drawing
Art that anyone can learn. This is you seeing the world in various shapes and symbols you are able to relay onto paper.
Example of realistic drawing
A child draws a flower and you see the shapes of a flower. You recognize this as a flower.
Bringing this mindset into the classroom is extremely important because it's out job to encourage this mindset and understanding the difference will help both functions flourish. It's also great to use as an art project too!
