Up Your Average, In Business and Life: Recent Episodes

Jared Van Dyke

It’s easy to get lost in the daily grind of life and business. We need to have the right people in our lives if we want to succeed. If you had a childhood like me, you were probably told, "if you run with dogs, you're gonna get fleas".

I prefer the late, great Jim Rohn's version, "you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." This is a principle that I based my company, Up Your Average LLC. on. Do you want to increase your chances of success? One of the best places to start is to change who you spend your time with. Are you ready to Up Your Average?

Each week join me, Jared, so we can navigate the world of being husbands, fathers and entrepreneurs. Journey with me through solo episodes and interviews with other successful business people as we avoid the bumps and bruises of life and business.

Whether you have a side hustle, think you want to start a business or just like to be a fly on the wall listening in on the conversations of successful business people, this is the podcast for you. Join the family and Up Your Average.

One of the things that has been helping me is trying to step back from what is going on in business and life. If I'm wanting to start something new, my mind goes wild with why I can't.

Sometimes the only thing you can do is take a step back and try to look at it from the outside. Listen in and then email me the answer to the question in the show!

Here's the quote I mentioned in the show as well.

“If you want to know the value of one year, just ask a student who failed a course.

If you want to know the value of one month, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby.

If you want to know the value of one hour, ask the lovers waiting to meet.

If you want to know the value of one minute, ask the person who just missed the bus.

If you want to know the value of one second, ask the person who just escaped death in a car accident.

And if you want to know the value of one-hundredth of a second, ask the athlete who won a silver medal in the Olympics.”

My friend on Facebook, Nathan Fraser made a post that started off with "The biggest obstacles between you and what you want are often the obstacles in your own head." This led me to todays episode.

Having struggled to start businesses in the past, this post really hit home for me. It wasn't until I started to see and address some of these thoughts and beliefs that things started changing. This can't be a coincidence.

I have just stated listening to a book The Obstacle is the Way that I believe will also help on our journey through life and business. I can't wait to dive in further to see how much this book will move me forward on my journey.

It's easy to get in the mindset of spending money. Each time you try out a new tool or purchase a program ask yourself a question. Did I buy that or did I invest in that tool or program?

It seems the normal "programming" is we are spending money any time we trade money for stuff. I suggest you start investing in your business and yourself. This one little adjustment to the words you use and think can change the way you approach those items.

Have those items start working for you. Have them start making you money or leading you to making more money or allowing you to get more out of life. After all, there is more to life than just money.

If you'd like to jump on a call with me about investing vs. spending money go to upyouraveragepodcast.com/coachingcall

Listen in as I talk about one of the best ways to help retention of new learning. We are always learning new things but, do we remember what we learn? Don't leave retention of information that you are really interested in to chance!

Learn all you can and then teach it to someone else. Keep in mind, you don't have to wait until you learn everything to start teaching it. Start teaching it not long after you start learning. You will have more in common with those you are teaching than an expert in the field.

So get out there and start learning, to teach.

In this episode find out some questions you should ask yourself about the people you are hanging out with. Do you want to make changes in order to improve your chances of success?

If you run with dogs you'll get fleas is a saying that I was told often as a kid and I think this applies now more than ever. Don't do it for me or for your friends, do it for you and your family!

The whole reason I am here is to help you make your life and journey in business easier. I have come up with 7 ways to do this by Upping Your Average. I cover these 7 ways in this episode and I will go deeper on these 7 ways in the future.

Make sure you check back for the downloadable poster I created listing out these 7 ways. One of the ways I am helping people is by spending some time with them on a zoom call. Shoot me an email at Jared@jvdshow.com and request an appointment for us to talk. I look forward to hearing from you!

Even with 2020 being a crazy year I encourage you to look into your life closer. I think if you look close enough you will find something to be thankful for. Listen in and you can hear some of the things I'm thankful for and maybe this will help you when you make up your list of items to be thankful for.

Something I mention is Dr Maxwell Maltz's Theatre of the Mind by Matt Furey. You can check out the Audible program by clicking here.

Send me some things on your thankful list! I want to hear from you, email me at Jared@jvdshow.com.

I have been working on a brand change for my podcast to make it match my company and how I want to help men in business.  I also dive deeper into my journey of entering the online business world.

Some of the challenges I faced almost stopped me cold in my tracks. I almost left the online business world for good. Don't fall into the same traps that I did when I tried to start out here.  Find out more about how I want to help you succeed.

I started off by telling about not scheduling my priorities but ended up saying it the wrong way. I said it the way that has been ingrained in me since I was young. I said prioritizing my schedule and if you caught podcast episode 4 you know that I messed up what I was trying to say.

This led me down a whole different path of sharing. I dive into the things we say to ourselves. Sometimes out loud but most of the time we say things to ourselves  just by thinking the thoughts. Listen in and then shoot me an email at Jared@jvdshow.com, lets connect and have a chat. Or just let me know some of the things you are dealing with or things that you want me to dive deeper into on the podcast.

Ever since I was a kid I remember being told that all good things must come to an end. As an adult I see that this kind of thinking can be extremely detrimental to our success and mental well being.

I question this philosophy and what should we really be doing? Dive into the episode and then shoot me an email and tell me what you think, Jared@jvdshow.com

For many years I was told to be excited about what I'm doing. If I'm recruiting or wanting someone to work with me. This was a major key to my training, they will feel your excitement and want to work with you. After spending many hours listening to one of the worlds best negotiators that started training business leaders and countries, Jim Camp, I found out that is not good advice.

I dive into this subject a little deeper, listen in and tell me if you agree. Send me an email at Jared@jvdshow.com.

Which should I choose? A group coaching program or a mastermind group? What even is the difference?

Listen in today as I discuss a couple of the differences, that way you can decide which is better for your current needs.

I also mention I'm launching a beta mastermind group. If you would like to be considered for this and would like to apply, send me an email at Jared@jvdshow.com

Unfortunately I've heard so many stories of people and companies promising to do something, and then they don't deliver!

Don't be one of "those guys". If you are not sure if you can meet the timeline requested, tell them. If you believe you can meet that deadline, that's awesome! Do everything in your power to meet that deadline. If something happens along the way, communication is key.

Don't let the client just keep expecting the delivery without knowledge of your inability to meet that deadline now.

I mention that I'm not sure if I'll continue daily or not, let me, would you like me to keep doing daily? Send me an email at Jared@jvdshow.com

I've been thrown many curveballs throughout life. I've come to learn that it's not what happens to us but how we react that matters. We need to keep pushing forward and not give up.

It's easy to look at someone else when this happens and compare our set backs to someone else's highlight reel. We need to compare ourselves to ourselves, not someone else. Remember, just because we haven't seen someone have a setback doesn't mean they never had one.

What kind of setbacks have you had? Shoot me an email at jared@jvdshow.com and share. You are not alone!!

I've been talking about the upper limit challenge recently and today I came across the Instagram story of someone I follow, Johnny Crowder. You can follow him here, https://www.instagram.com/johnnycrowderlovesyou/

In this episode I read what he posted in his story. It was very compelling and it hit home with me. We have all been dealing with tough times but we have to fight through and not give up. We have to do what we need to, get the help we need and push through. It's not always easy, but it is worth it!

I've struggled with shiny object syndrome for years. I've let it stop me cold in my online business adventures and I don't want you to fall victim to that as well. One of the first steps is know that it can happen to you. Be aware of this, you may fall into it without even realizing it.

Once you are there, noticing that you have gone down that path, you can refocus and get back on track. Don't confuse this with deciding to change directions in your business. We can change our focus and that is okay. You make the rules in your business.

If you see this happening, it's up to you to make a decision, course correct and get back to where you were headed or change your path intentionally. It's when we aren't intentional that things go awry.

Let me know what shiny objects have stopped you cold. Jared@jvdshow.com

I was having a great day yesterday, then today, not so much. I allowed myself to upper limit today and that caused me to feel down all day long. The book, The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks talks about our upper limit and what it can do to us.

I have listened to the audiobook multiple time and gone through the physical book several time, taking many, many notes as I went. This is not how I normally consume material. This book was special, is shed light on many years of my own behaviors. Still to this day, I clearly struggle with these types of issues. The difference is now that I can usually spot it and not allow it to take over weeks of my life.

When you get the book and go through it, shoot me an email at Jared@jvdshow.com and let me know any insights you have about the book. I'd love to hear your story. Have a great day!

I started sending out some personal video messages inviting people to talk with me about a mastermind group that I'm starting. It's Up Your Average Mastermind. This is a mastermind group for men, it's basically a group of guys that will do life together and be there for one another to help in life and business.

I have spent a lot of time studying and learning coaching and how to run mastermind groups. I have wanted to find a way to make a large impact on other peoples lives and this is a way that I have seen do that for many people.

It can be a little nerve racking to reach out to people, especially via video for me. We all have to leave our comfort zone if we want to move further ahead. That means we are trying to change things for ourselves. I say just do it! What ever it is that you have been avoiding or putting off, just get it done! Put it on your schedule and knock it out. You'll thank yourself later and you may even wonder why you were worried about it in the first place.

If you are interested in knowing more about this mastermind, shoot me an email at Jared@jvdshow.com. Let's have a conversation!

Producing content is somewhat new to me. I've done some challenges of writing something every day and I did that for a month or so but I just didn't love writing. Now I have been challenged again. This time it is to produce something everyday using one medium. Live video, blogging or podcasting, my choice but do one, it will make a difference in my business in many ways. At least that is what I was told as part of this challenge. So listen in and see what I decided to do.

This a question I still struggle with to this day. For years I've worked like crazy trying to provide for my family. I don't really know how to just slow down and be. I feel like I need to always be doing something to provide for my family. Do you fall into this type of mindset?

Don't end up like me, with 2 grown children and the third a teenager, but you feel like you haven't spent much time with them. Start today, make your family a priority. Put some boundaries in place that are going to make your family life better. We can always make more money but once our family is grown, they go out on their own and you don't see them nearly as much!

Do it right the first time. This is an old saying that I've heard since I was a kid. As an adult I have come to realize the truth behind this saying and whether or not we should listen to this advice.

Hear about some of the impacts that this message has had on my life and the lives of my children. Have you heard this message in the past or one like it? Has that message affected you in similar ways? Has it impacted your children or will it impact your future children?
