This episode was inspired by a conversation that I had with an Agency Owner that generated $1M in revenue last year and is projected to do the same this year. She shared that over the past few months she had to stop taking on more clients because she hit an operational ceiling and needed to make some changes before bringing on more business.

This reminded me of another conversation I had with an Agency Owner that was making about $180K in revenue and had to stop attending live in-person events (which she loved) because she couldn’t take on more clients without “breaking her business.”

How big you want to grow your business is up to YOU. However, typically when people hit ceilings like this, there are a lot of operational changes that can make their agency run more smoothly and efficiently REGARDLESS of how “big” they want to grow.

What’s in this episode:

  • Questions to ask yourself if you’re not taking on more clients.
  • 3 common fears around agency growth and change.
  • Overcoming what your current clients will think of new changes.
  • What needs to shift for you to take on more clients

  • How to know your service is “in-demand” enough
  • The importance of repeatable results vs. processes

“Oh, so you have too many clients wanting to work with you at once, what a great problem to have.”

We’ve all heard it. And while yes, it’s nice to know our services are in demand, it also presents a brand new set of challenges.

Many Agency Owners start to wonder: How many clients can I actually handle at once? How can I hire quickly to meet this demand? Will I have to step into client work to get everything done? What happens if I hire and then demand goes down and then I have to fire everyone?

In this episode I share what you need to do as soon as you experience an influx of new clients (or if you know it’s coming!) We’ll talk about what areas to quickly revamp so that team support works better and some strategies for how to make sure your team is hired and trained to meet the promises you’ve made to your clients.

What’s in this episode:

  • The four areas you need to quickly audit before signing new clients

We talk a lot on the podcast about delegating 50% - 90% of client work in 12 months or less and strategies for “delegating for good.” But the reality is that many times Agency Owners will need to step back into client work. When this happens it can feel so frustrating and disappointing. Thoughts pop up like – “I’m not good at running an agency” or “I’m doing something wrong.” This can send us into a downward spiral.

If this has happened to you I want you to know you’re not alone. And if this hasn’t happened to you yet… it will. It’s normal. The important thing to know is that this isn’t a “forever” thing, it’s temporary. And, if you can start settling into knowing that this temporary setback is actually helping you grow, you may even start to enjoy it.

What’s in this episode:

  • The number one mindset shift you must make if you’re back in client work
  • 3 tips for making being back into client work worth your while
  • Why delegating as an agency owner can be so challenging
  • How to create a transitional plan to getting out of client work

In today’s episode, Annie is sharing her journey from corporate agency to solo copywriting and eventually to running her own team. We discussed how your team can help you find balance with client communication and how outsourcing part of your workload can create freedom and flexibility in your schedule.

  • How Annie started copywriting and decided to grow her team
  • Making the internet a more “human” place through copywriting
  • How Annie’s experience in an agency shaped her own business

Today’s guest is one of my clients and someone I am excited to share with you, Carli Anna. Carli is a Brand Strategist and Coach for creatives pivoting into passive income.

We started working together over a year ago and she’s had some pretty incredible results since joining The CEO Roundtable. Carli has overcome negative mindsets and went from being burnt out, working all the time (sometimes up to 65+ hours a week) to working 20 hours a week (while having a baby). Not only that, but she increased her revenue from $110,000 to $210,000 while also increasing her profit from $55,000 to $143,000.

You’ll hear what her business looked like before joining The CEO Roundtable and the things she started implementing to get her business into good shape. Carli gives us her insight into the changes she’s made with her time, money and impact and how she shifted an offering to make it available to more clients. She also shares how getting clear on her ideal clients has helped her as she’s grown her business.

  • What her business looked like before joining The CEO Roundtable
  • How Carli shifted her offerings to attract more clients

In today’s episode, I am talking about how to identify when a team member is underperforming. As a service provider, there will likely come a time when you have to deal with a team member who is underperforming. This is actually an opportunity for you… You might be wondering, how is that? Underperforming team members in your business can be a symptom of a bigger problem.

You’ll learn what steps you can take when you notice underperformance, and how to get to the root cause of the issue - things like communication errors, unclear expectations or confusion about a project. These things can actually help you to see which processes in your business need more attention. I also touch on how navigating these challenges can help you to develop better leadership skills as a business owner.

What’s in this episode:

  • What it looks like for a team member to be underperforming
  • Why you need to take time to assess and analyze your systems during this process
  • Steps to take when you notice a team member is underperforming

Does your agency’s profitability keep you up at night? If so, you definitely want to hear my conversation with guest Amy Bradbury. What’s in this episode:

  • Her perspective on making an agency model work for you financially
  • Money mindset changes she sees CEOs go through
  • Why she believes in a conscious spending plan rather than a budget

Is the fear of not having profitability holding you back from fully stepping into an agency model business? In this episode series on setting up your agency to scale, we’re talking all about money.

This can hold back a lot of done-for-you solopreneurs from growing their team and scaling their business because they worry about not having the means to make it all work.

Take a listen to hear me explore what profitability is all about, why you need to transition your CEO pay from being a billable expense to an overhead expense and why knowing your numbers is critical as you step into and own the CEO role.

What’s in this episode:

  • How profitability has more to do with how the business is run rather than the business model
  • The problem I see business owners making when transitioning from solopreneur to CEO
  • Why profitability is not all about percentages but what that money can do
  • What happens when you don’t know your numbers

Today’s guest is one of my clients and someone I am excited to share with you, Carli Anna. Carli is a Brand Strategist and Coach for creatives pivoting into passive income.

We started working together over a year ago and she’s had some pretty incredible results since joining The CEO Roundtable.

In today’s episode, I share the circumstances that might cause you to rethink some of your clients and why you absolutely have to let go of clients who aren’t the right fit for you!

You’ll get insight into the 3 signs that might occur that will let you know that it may be time to let go of a client and one optional (but still important) sign that you may consider. I also give some tips for the best way to handle releasing a client.

What’s in this episode:

  • The circumstances where you might consider firing a client
  • Why you have to let go of non-ideal clients if you want to grow your business
  • 3 signs that you may need to let a client go (and one optional sign to be aware of)

These things can actually help you to see which processes in your business need more attention. I also touch on how navigating these challenges can help you to develop better leadership skills as a business owner.

Today I am sharing my thoughts around launching a course when you’re a done-for-you service provider. The truth? Most service providers are doing it wrong and I don’t want you to make the same mistake. (I share this also from personal experience --- I’ve messed this up too!)

Here’s the thing… launching a course won’t save your business. If your business is already struggling, it will only add fuel to the fire. In today’s episode, I share what you need to have nailed down before even thinking about launching an additional revenue stream.

You’ll hear why you need to have your done-for-you services running smoothly from both a financial and delivery standpoint before launching a course. I also chat about having the right growth strategy in place and how when you do this right, you’ll be able to scale your business (and work a lot less!)

What’s in this episode:

  • Why a course isn’t the easy way out
  • Why you need to build offerings around your ideal client
  • The differences between done-for-you, done-with-you, and do-it-yourself
  • How getting your services running smoothly will give you leeway to experiment with additional offerings

The transition from solopreneur to CEO is a challenging one. There are many roadblocks and hurdles to overcome when it comes to building scalable offerings, attracting the clients that are the right fit for you and of course, building a team you trust.

When I talk to service-providers that are growing their businesses, they often share that they want to hire more team members to support them, but aren’t sure where to start. They’re afraid of making the wrong hire or increasing their expenses without seeing a return.

These concerns are not silly and shouldn’t be dismissed as purely “mindset blocks.” They are real and valid.

I know, because I’ve been there. I’ve hired the wrong people, overpaid for services, overlooked structural issues that needed to be addressed before adding more clients and team members to my business. Luckily, learned from them, grew and evolved.

Building a successful team is more than having a perfect job post and application process (even though I’m a huge fan of those too!) It’s about diving into the foundational elements of your business and building a business that’s set up to scale.

Want to learn how I did it? And how I’ve helped dozens of other service-providers do the same? Tune into today’s episode to learn more about our process!

After listening, if you’re ready to take these teachings to the next level, then make sure to sign up for our 5-day challenge that starts May 18th!

Do you feel like your clients are constantly pushing your boundaries (or crossing them completely)? Maybe they’re emailing you at 10 p.m. on a weeknight. Perhaps they’re texting you over the weekend about a work matter…

It’s frustrating, I get it. I’ve been there too. The good news is that you can change it. You might be surprised to learn that the problem isn’t your client. The problem is actually your boundaries (or lack thereof!)

A lack of boundaries can leave you feeling frustrated, taken advantage of and ultimately disheartened about your client (and sometimes even your own work!) Having supportive boundaries in place early on in your business is essential if you want to grow and scale.

In this episode, I explore 3 steps you can take to handle boundary-crossing clients. I give you strategies to establish and enforce your boundaries with clients. We’ll also chat about how your thoughts will shift your communication and your results!

What’s in this episode:

  • Why you feel out of control when clients are crossing boundaries
  • The reasons why it’s essential to put boundaries in place
  • Why it’s important to identify your ideal client
  • Why you need to address boundaries early on if you want to grow and scale
  • Why your boundaries being pushed is actually a “me problem” rather than a “them problem”
  • 3 steps to handle boundary-crossing clients
  • How you can enforce boundaries with your clients
  • What enforcing boundaries does to support both you and them
  • Why you need to take notice of the thoughts you have about the actions of your clients

This episode is the first of a special series where we’ll follow my client, Caroline Hull, for a year as she grows her podcast production business!

We talk about how she got over 10 hours a week back into her schedule and doubled her revenue within just 60 days of us working together. We discuss how she made the decision to hire support and she’ll give you some guidance on how to make that decision for yourself! She also shares how she’s built her marketing to support her business with a waitlist that continues to grow as her business does!

What’s in this episode:

  • How Caroline got into this business after starting her own podcast about being a creative business owner
  • Her transition from a stationery business into a podcast production company
  • How deciding to homeschool her daughter helped her to make this decision to transition her business
  • When she realized she wanted to grow her business beyond just herself
  • Getting used to exercising the muscle of getting support and knowing when is the “right” time to hire
  • What changes Caroline implemented into her process to take back more hours in her day (over 10 hours per week!)
  • Her experience of rebranding her business and how she’s set up her marketing to build a growing waitlist
  • What Caroline’s focusing on for the next few months and deciding which revenue opportunities to pursue for company growth
  • Her advice for someone who is considering getting support whether it’s from a coach, employee or someone else
