Today we have a special Christmas Eve episode of Beyond Risk and Back. The holidays can be a stressful time, especially for those who suffer or have loved ones who suffer from OCD and disassociative disorders.
Erik Da Rosa stands as a beacon of connection and understanding in the realm of mental health advocacy. His journey began with heartfelt exchanges, like the one with his guest Johnny during the first year of his venture—an encounter that was both enlightening and pivotal. Having candid conversations with individuals facing real battles—like Johnny, who navigated the complexities of OCD—Erik found solace and kinship in sharing stories of personal struggles, compulsions, and rituals.
Laughter was woven into these dialogues, not to diminish the gravity of their experiences, but to bring a sense of lightness to otherwise challenging discussions. Erik's approach emphasizes the significance of humor as a tool to ease into tough topics, a philosophy that resonates particularly with parents navigating these conversations with their children. His ability to strike a balance between the serious and the lighthearted marks the unique approach Erik brings to mental health awareness—a blend of empathy, levity, and a deep-seated desire to make difficult conversations accessible to everyone.
Erik tells us his story of dealing with his mental struggles, and how therapy and self-awareness have allowed him to maintain a functional and fulfilling lifestyle. Erik is the host of a popular podcast From Survivor To Thriver, where he and his co-host talk openly about their struggles.
"Each week, Erik and Marc tackle different mental health topics through honest and relatable “kitchen table” conversations with real people who are helping to shatter mental health stigmas and find their voices. We aim to normalize discussions around mental health topics and remind our audience they are not alone, there is strength in community, and “it’s perfectly ok to not always be ok.”

A very special guest, known as one of the greatest divers of all time, Gregory Efthimios Louganis joins us to talk about his life, his accomplishments, and the change he has witnessed in attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community and the struggle with HIV/AIDS. Greg has won four Olympic gold medals, five world championships, and dozens of other awards during his career. He was also a focal point in the discussion around HIV/AIDS when he injured his head in a diving event, and bled into the pool. He was unjustly criticized for not disclosing his health status, however, it was later concluded by experts that the other divers were at no risk of contracting the disease. Greg is now an author, activist for LGBTQ+ rights, and personal coach. He uses his experience as one of the greatest competitors of all time to prepare people for any situation they may face in life or business.

Dr. Charles Fay and Aaron Huey review the essentials of Love and Logic and how it can provide a clear path of boundaries, consequences, and responsibility for ANY child. Dr. Fay is a parent, internationally recognized author, consultant and highly skilled public speaker. Millions of educators, mental health professionals, and parents world-wide have benefited from his practical and down-to-earth solutions to the most common and frustrating behaviors displayed by youth of all ages. These solutions come directly from years of research and clinical experience serving severely disturbed youth and their families in psychiatric hospitals, public and private schools, and homes. His interest in education and psychology were peaked as a child from years of exposure to some of our nation’s most dynamic experts in these fields. This early exposure came as a result of participation in training events with his father, Jim Fay. Jim is one of the nation’s leading experts on child discipline and has over fifty years of experience in public education. The internationally recognized Love and Logic approach was literally developed around Charles Fay as he grew. Now he jokes, “I think that’s why I became a psychologist…just to figure out what they were doing to me as a kid. But…let me be clear…I absolutely adore my mom and dad as a result.”
Dr. Fay currently works full time as an author, consultant, public speaker and CEO of the Love and Logic Institute. Because of his high-powered sense of humor and story-telling skills, audiences experience the most memorable and life changing form of learning: learning that’s mentally connected to joy and real-life examples.

Mandi Nuttall is a former high school health teacher and collegiate volleyball player at BYU and has since adopted the self-proclaimed titles of a taxi driver, nutritionist, doctor, therapist, personal trainer, cancer fighter, interior designer, janitor, photographer, chef, all since marrying her soulmate and becoming a mother. Mandi and her kind-hearted husband Matt found out real quick how easy it is to go from 3 to 5 kids after twins rocked their world. After living in Utah for 12 years, and Mandi working as a professional photographer while her husband finished school, the Nuttalls have moved North and have fallen in love with the Pacific Northwest. In between the craziness of motherhood, Mandi has found another incredible purpose. Mandi is now publishing her first book, The Birthday Suit Book 1: Yearly Guides to Easily Teach Children Ages 1 to 9 About Their Body and Sex which launches on October 5th. This first book will make a huge difference in parents' lives. Mandi believes in the limitless potential within families to do good and raise knowledgeable children. She witnessed the lack of knowledge in her High School students when teaching about the body and health in her Health class, and knows how hard it is for parents to feel confident in teaching this subject. So she wrote this book to make the process simple, and to empower parents to then empower their children to respect and love their bodies. We have one shot to teach our kids to respect their bodies, and we can't leave that up to the world-it's our job and divine responsibility.
27 years as a High School Teacher, Marci Brockman is the author of Permission to Heal and this show helps clear the way for self-care.
Empathy begins with the sharing of our stories. In this podcast, we engage in meaningful, deeply human conversations to inspire connection, compassion, understanding, and whole-hearted wellness. We all need to learn to give ourselves the grace and space to heal from trauma, breathe through the tough stuff, and create meaningful lives and love. Only we can give ourselves permission to trust and take care of ourselves, follow our hearts and desires, and build lives of love, home, and belonging. Marci Brockmann is an author, artist, podcaster, and English teacher.
Do you actually have to stop and literally give yourself permission to recover from your trauma?
Yep. It is the first step to true healing. Tell yourself you can.

I have the host of Coffee over Suicide Podcast, Chris Parker Howard, on to talk with humor, honesty, and a deep message about suicide.
Who he is is best Summed up in his own bio...
"I used to wonder if I was stranded on a desert island, without anti-depressants or mood stabilizers, would my own brain be the thing that kills me? I spent a lot of time trying different coping mechanisms for my particular cocktail of manic depression, social anxiety, OCD, and ADD, and I have come up with a LOT of ways to live through them. Every morning I face the same choice; I could kill myself, or just have a cup of coffee and see where the day goes from there. Coffee over Suicide is a dramedy podcast about mental illness and choosing life over death one cup of coffee at a time."

Kyle Mitchell grew up with it. Survived it. Thrives with it. Kyle is a teen mental health advocate, podcast host, upcoming TEDx speaker, and, most importantly, severe social anxiety survivor and overcomer.
Kyle believes that we need to start a new conversation around mental health for teenagers. Where breakthroughs are the new norm, and all challenges are opportunities. There is a silent pandemic that continues to emerge across the planet. According to the World Health Organization, over 300 million people are suffering from anxiety and the number is not showing signs of subsiding, especially after this past year. With Kyle experiencing social anxiety much of his life, he is starting a new movement, his own bold mission, to help 1 million teens go from socially anxious to socially confident by 2022.

When children self-harm, we often are afraid of what they will have to tell people about their scars when they get older. How will they explain it to a friend, future spouse, a boss? How could they do this to their bodies and their future?
WHY would a child ever do this?
"I am not my mental health trauma. I am me."
I met with Amy Minh Hạnh Corey on the birthday of her 8th year of sobriety from self-harm who can explain it to use from a young-persons point of view, and WHY she cut.
Bullying, depression, suicide survivor... The words "fat" and "hate" are carved into her arm... but...now at only twenty-four years old, TEDx Speaker, Mental Health Keynote and Public Speaker, Singer, Songwriter and Goodwill Ambassador to Holt International and HCMC Peace and Development Foundation; Amy Minh Hanh Corey is building her creative empire through her understanding and honesty in mental health by sharing her mindset in music, songwriting, writing, public speaking, and ambassadorships on how she has not only overcome the worst anyone could imagine going through, but how because of those sufferings and her unbelievable experiences, she has trained her mind to turn every negative time into something positive and mastered how to not only survive in chaos but how to thrive in it as well. Her mindset has not only created her rapidly growing empire throughout multiple industries but is the drive-in her passion to understand the misunderstood and help heal whoever she can reach around the world, in everything she does.

Kolbe Testing was originally a brilliant business tool to understand employee strengths and utilizing them in the RIGHT place in the business. It is literally a tool to find out HOW people solve problems.
I've taken multiple Kolbe tests through the years and took one again recently. My guest interprets my results!
Gail Swift was part of the team that helped Kolbe create a testing procedure for kids as young as 3...and the results are AMAZING.
No, I'm not joking.
Before you roll your eyes, you need to know that I am a believer in essential oils and use them a lot.
After I heard about my guest, I had to ask her:
Melody Watts thinks so and I brought her on the air to talk about ANOTHER tool we could use.
Nine years ago Melody Watts began her journey of self-discovery and healing following a perfect storm of malady, tragedy, and bad luck. Diagnosed with a debilitating form of Lyme disease while struggling through a tumultuous divorce, she simultaneously lost her mother in a tragic car accident. To exacerbate matters she was imprisoned on a baseless technicality and spent 7-months behind penitentiary bars.
Upon release, Melody was introduced to doTERRA essential oils, through a close friend while seeking alternative advice for her son’s recurrent cough. Miraculously, the essential oils worked and Melody’s perspective of holistic healthcare was altered forever.
Shortly thereafter, she officially joined doTERRA in 2013 and by 2015 was top 1% in sales in all of doTERRA. By 2019 Melody sold over $22-million per year and helped thousands of business owners accomplish financial freedom.
Melody lives in Meridian, Idaho with her husband Walter and her four children and two horses.

Stigmas and stereotypes are surrounding every generation. We can look back and notice the differences in Boomers' social culture, vs. Millennials, vs. Generation-I. But, what about parenting?

Perfectionists are extraordinary people. Their vision, determination, and commitment to only the very best has allowed seemingly unreachable ambitions to be realized and ground-breaking techniques to be discovered. Without them, the world as we know it would be virtually unrecognizable.
But their dedication comes at a price. The pursuit of perfection is often so intense that mental and physical health is frequently compromised, with the continual feelings of never being good enough sending many perfectionists on the road to depression and burnout.

"My gateway was my family." Transparency and Truth, John paints the picture of recovery that feels familiar to a lot of us and relieves the pressure of feeling like you are alone in your struggle. Starting at 8 years old and now supporting teens in recovery getting into college. An inspiring story of family love, drug use, and moving on.
Smoking Cigarettes has been deemed just as addictive as using Heroin; my guest today refutes this claim. John De Miranda has been substance-free for over 40 years and has dedicated his life to researching and understanding the Nicotine Industry.

I meet with adolescent therapist Ozzie Cabral to learn the true NATURE of being with a traumatized teen...and work with his WOLVES.

We pass down alot to our children, genetically and emotionally. As parents, we try to figure out where our child's behavior comes from, especially when they are acting out and struggling.
My guest today will guide us through the concept of Epigenetics, the study of how trauma is passed down through generations.
Carolyn Ross, a Board Certified Medical Doctor and specialist in addiction disorder, dedicates her practice to understanding the effects of Epigenetics and how parents can build awareness of how their own experience is affecting their children.
How do we navigate uncertainty? What can we hold on to when things are out of our control. I get to sit down with Dr.Renee Baribeau and Dr.Lauren Costine to break down what "certainty" actually means and how we can adapt our emotional, mental and physical needs while living in an uncertain world.
Times are changing, and we are seeing laws surrounding legal punishment of drug crimes change all over the country. How do we decide as a nation who gets incarcerated and who gets sent to rehab? And, how is this affecting YOUR struggling teen?
My guest is David Dawd, from the Department of Corrections, discusses how legislation and laws are changing the way we look at addiction in our penal system.
Let's shake up the "norm" of psychology. It is often our way, as human beings, to ask, "what is wrong with me?" "What is wrong with my kid?" "What is wrong with my marriage?" Today, let us ask, "What is RIGHT?"
Jean Campbell accompanies me to discuss Positive Psychology, the practice of focusing individuals on their progress and positive impact, rather than focusing on the negative. She will explain why this is so vital for parents to understand with their teens and see it affecting clients' progress today.
What is a wounded healer? As mental health care professionals and as parents, can we serve and heal our children and clients if we ourselves are not healed?
Today I am joined by expert Sarah Buino as she dives into the wounded healer concept and how to navigate a mentorship role when you yourself may have a lot of internal work to do...

Dr. Boriskin explains that someone can have an addictive disorder without post-traumatic stress disorder – or PTSD without substance abuse issues – but it’s very common for the conditions to co-occur. In fact, he estimates that more than 80 percent of the military veterans he treats for PTSD also have a substance-abuse disorder.
“The timing of which comes first is irrelevant,” he says. “It’s imperative to come to terms with the addiction first, then start working with the PTSD issue.” He notes that both disorders are difficult to treat, but both respond to similar interventions.

Boysen Hodgson and Brian Katz both work with men and boys mentoring and teaching in their communities, but do men know WHAT to say to each other about consent and assaults on women, without actually talking to a woman and hear what she wants said?
Join Jeanie Cisco Meth and host Aaron Huey as they talk about bullying in today's culture.
When Jeanie was a young girl, everyone knew she was different. When she got into school, the labeling began. She had so many learning disabilities and physical differences she stood out. She had dyslexia, she couldn’t talk very well, she was legally blind, by the eighth grade she was six feet tall, she was a cancer survivor, and the list goes on. She was told she would never amount to much. She remembers sitting in the classroom with her parents and her teachers listening to the discussion about her dismal future. Jeanie and her parents had different ideas. Delbert and Martha, Jeanie’s parents, did not spend so much time, money, emotional stress battling childhood cancer with her just to give up now. They knew she would find a way.
When Jeanie got into high school she decided she was not going to let someone else tell her how her future would go. She sought out the tools that helped her graduate high school then she went on to college. She was the first in her family to graduate from a four-year university.
Jeanie used her learning patterns to help others become successful as well. She went on to become a high school teacher and helped many students find their true path in life. When a fellow teacher asked her to teach what she had learned about helping students, Jeanie designed courses to do just that. Jeanie then decided to take what she is teaching and make it available to a larger audience. One of her main courses is called Bully Proofing You: Taming the Bully Between Your Ears.
She has found success or a lesson in everything she has ever tried to do and accomplish. She loves teaching people who want to improve and make a difference in and with their lives. Jeanie is the majority owner in two very successful businesses and teaches people from all walks of life how to create the life they desire. Her passion and enthusiasm will have you filled with excitement while you learn how to create your own incredible life.

In Which Way?... Mother and daughter tell parallel stories about trauma and its impact on the generations that follow. Jann Simmons’ story is a heart-wrenching account of an orphaned child who suffered brutality at the hands of her mother, as well as many others. As an adult, Jann’s mind was closed to the horrors of her abuse, betrayal, and abandonment until the day they all came flooding back to her conscious mind. That awareness began a 40-year transformation from a passive victim to resilient warrior.
As a young teen, Shari struggled to make sense of her mother’s pain, but as a career mental-health therapist, she began to understand her mother’s journey and learn how trauma affects the brain. She offers strategies in this book for those suffering from past or present trauma or for those who love someone who is suffering. Both women tell their stories and drive home the fact that the choices we make can lead to self-hatred and resentment or to a life of courage, healing and beauty.
Which Way? is an unforgettable story of love and transformation that will resonate with mothers, daughters, trauma survivors, those who love them and those who’ve made a career out of helping them heal.

Host of Beyond Risk and Back and founder of www.firemountainprograms.com, Aaron Huey, interviews Chester Simmons, a young man that learned how to overcome dyslexia and ADD. Tune in to hear an amazing perspective for parents:
What is it like to have Dyslexia? Do you grow out of it? How does it affect ones social life? What helps?
Aaron and Chester talk about dyslexia from the perspective of learning from someone who grew up and continues to evolve while at the same time “being cool with it”.
Chester lived in the Denver Area most of his life. He has been aware of his Dyslexia and ADD since the summer before the 4ht grade. He was reluctant to receive the help that he needed because at times it made him feel different than his peers. His reluctance to receive help definitely made school a struggle. When Chester was in college he captained the CU Denver Club Soccer Team, and was a student officer. In sports he found an outlet to shine, away from the struggles of school he was able to focus and excel at what he did. He dedicated himself at that time to help youth who struggle with school. He now runs an after school program that helps youths in the correctional system stay out of trouble during high risk hours.

The expectation that teens should act a certain way, when they may not even be developmentally capable of doing it is a set up for failure! How do you know what to expect from a teen and what is the difference between “willingness and capability”?
Aaron Huey, Co-Founder, and President of Firemountain Residential Treatment Center has been working with children, teens, and parents for over 18 years. After ten years directing camps and empowerment programs around the world, Aaron opened Fire Mountain because he wanted to work with kids and families on a deeper level. Over the first few years of running programs like Teen Rites of Passage The Warrior Phoenix Challenge, and numerous cries for help from parents, Aaron realized the need to turn his efforts towards teens struggling with drugs, alcohol and the behaviors and issues related to addiction. An addict in recovery since 2000, he felt a calling to put together an expert team and open Fire Mountain. His mission is to awaken confidence and leadership. “It‘s not about being better, it‘s about giving up the struggle to be different from who you are.”
Aaron’s formal educational background is in acting. He graduated from the top acting school in the US, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1990. His skills in comedy and drama make him an influential speaker and presenter, and a favorite among the kids. His confidence, compassion, and humor set the tone for deep healing, and fun.
Aaron is also trained as an EMT, a Wilderness Survival Instructor and Martial Arts teacher, all of which he weaves into the Fire Mountain RTC curriculum.

Aaron Huey, founder of Firemountain Residential Treatment Center and host of Beyond Risk and Back, discusses how important it is to take care of the adult relationships in your life. This is a part of taking care of your kids - an important part. When we neglect our own self-care in order to take care of our children or anyone else, the example we set for our kids is that their own self-care can take a backseat. All of those relationships in our lives as adults such as with our ex-partners, coparents, extended family members, and so on are important and deserve healthy maintenance.

Aaron Huey, your host and the owner of Fire Mountain Residential Treatment Center, talks with a mother who shares her story of cutting. What is cutting? Why is this commonplace with so many kids and also adults? How to help?Is there hope? In the most basic sense, cutting is a maladaptive coping mechanism that teenagers (and some adults) use during times of high stress and anxiety. While this act is hardly ever accompanied by suicidal thoughts, there is no single cause that has been identified. This self-harming pattern does not affect any one cultural or socioeconomic group and therefore, is a reasonable worry for parents no matter who they are. On the other hand, it is worthy of noting that self harm by cutting is more prominent in females than males. More...

Jim is one of the nation’s leading experts on child discipline and has over fifty years of experience in public education. The internationally recognized Love and Logic approach was literally developed around Charles Fay as he grew. Aaron Huey of Fire Mountain Residential Treatment Center has another discussion with parents about kids and running away. Teens are known for risky behavior and getting into trouble. Some of this is normal rebellion and testing limits and boundaries. All of a sudden, they are facing consequences at school, with the law, and at home. Some end up running away, …Read More

Predators use the internet as a gateway to victims because of the anonymity and the ability to lure children with minimal detection and apprehension. This same anonymity is capitalized upon by highly trained Cheezo investigators who portray themselves as teenagers online where adults seek victims for sexual purposes.
Since its inception in 2005, more than 920 arrests have been made in Jefferson County by Cheezo. The Cheezo investigators have a combined 50 years’ experience in crimes against children. Each year more than 150 Internet and cell phone safety presentations are given. The Cheezo team have established themselves as leaders in the tracking predators and are sought for training to other law enforcement agencies nationwide. The ‘Stranger Danger – Internet Strangers’ program has been presented to the Colorado PTA Conference, National Youth Crime Prevention Program, Fox31 News, the Rocky Mountain Deaf Institute, and the Colorado Department of Human Services statewide conference. Cheezo has been featured on Oprah, Dr. Phil, Court TV with Al Roker, and ABC Evening News.
Sgt. Mike Harris joins our host Aaron Huey discussing "Dialing Danger". Join them for a fascintating and frightening reality we all must be aware of in today's technology laden world.

Aaron Huey has been working with children, teens and parents for over 18 years.
Your host Aaron Huey and author Johnnie Calloway get real about addiction, recovery, sexual abuse, hitting rock bottom and making that life altering choice for personal transformation. Two strong men with powerful voices holding absolutely nothing back on this dynamic first podcast episode of Beyond Risk and Back.
Johnnie Calloway grew up in a small town in Kentucky, with the population at around 11,000. His mother passed when he was only five, leaving him to grow up with an angry, alcoholic, sexually confused father.
Johnnie was born into a reputation that he never wanted but was obligated to live up to. Still, Johnnie always wanted to be the “good guy.” The conflict between his personal desire and his sense of obligation to his dad’s/family’s reputation created a great torment that was oddly accompanied with an insatiable yearning to learn.
Eventually, Johnnie became a seeker of truth. And has now devoted himself to sharing what his seeking has taught him with others. He has written two books, “Taming the Dragon” and Dragons to Butterflies: The Metamorphosis of a Man, and is currently working on, “Within the Chrysalis, It’s an Inside Job”.
