Before I commence, I will have to give the MLS its flowers for bargaining a collective TV rights deal. Every single match is accessible through one platform and one price. I doubt we will ever see that happen for Liga MX. Here is the chart I created to help visualize what we are dealing with:
Which one of the 18 teams do you support? Chivas are exclusively on Telemundo. With a subscription to Peacock, you can catch all their home games for $4.99 a month. For everyone else, you’ll have to buy a channel lineup. FuboTV and Youtube TV are your options and I broke down the pricing here:
FuboTV and Youtube TV will carry the majority of LigaMX action thanks to TUDN & Univision. If you want the bare bones, the Latino package will suffice but it does not include Telemundo. ViX+ is annoying but can be free for a year if you are a t-mobile customer. If you consume most of your LigaMX in front of a TV (and not on a smartphone/tablet) don’t forget to buy yourself some bunny ears (a digital antenna). Depending on where you live, Univision, Unimas & Telemundo can get picked up for free.
I subscribed to all of these services and here are some of my takeaways:
- FuboTV’s pricing is confusing and misleading. They recently started charging customers a $14 regional sports fee
- Youtube TV streams faster than FuboTV. It still doesn’t beat my phone notifications but it is significantly faster than FuboTV, which is a big deal for live sports. The digital antenna is still the fastest way to watch live tv.
- No solution is perfect. Regardless of which platform you pick, ViX+ is unavoidable. I think TUDN has learned not to broadcast the giants (America/Chivas) matches on ViX+ because of its poor adoption and viewership but come Liguilla time I would not be surprised if they paywall us to catch a leg.

Guillermo put the number 8 in the name 8choa last Sunday as Salernitana was annihilated 8-2 by Atalanta. With such a polarizing scoreline, it is easy to put all the blame on the man between the posts. It is easy to pull up the score on your ESPN app or see it on your Twitter feed and immediately start talking shit about Ochoa and reposting memes. Serie A is exclusively streamed on Paramount+, which might be a blessing in disguise for Ochoa. I wonder if most folks will be willing to subscribe to the trainwreck that is Salernitana.
As excruciating as this season for Ochoa will be, I have to applaud him for rolling up his sleeves and taking this endeavor on at the humble age of 37. Ochoa could have easily coasted at Club America or joined the retirement league (MLS) and rolled with the residual income. Why would you go back to Europe?
I have a few theories. Ochoa is a masochist. He genuinely enjoys humiliation. The curly-headed fuck gets off on getting ransacked every week. Or maybe he’s gunning for the 2026 World Cup. He wants to go in the history books as the only player to attend six world cups. He’ll be 41, and in goalkeeping years, that’s nothing. Eight of the ten oldest players in world cup history were goalkeepers, Egypt’s Essam El-Hadary taking the #1 spot at age 45.
The challenge for Ochoa is asserting his dominance as the starting goalkeeper for the Mexican national team for the next three years. He can not rest on his laurels and be entitled to the starting spot just because of his name. Mexico was the 2nd oldest team in the 2022 world cup, and I’m sure Mexico’s next head coach will clean the slate and introduce young talent. The old heads need to go.
Suddenly a move to Salernitana makes sense. He’s the only active Mexican goalkeeper in Europe. He joined a team with a swiss cheese defense which will keep him on his toes. Like his time at Ajaccio, I predict Ochoa will end the season in Serie A as the goalkeeper with the most saves and goals conceded. Doing so will solidify his starting spot on the Mexican national team.
Salernitana is in a regulation battle and will face Chucky Lozano’s Napoli on Saturday, January 21st.

In a time when cable channels are losing subscribers to all manner of other content providers, there is one recently launched channel that is squashing the current narrative and proving to be a major success story: Univision Deportes Network.
Launched earlier in the decade, the channel took its time to take root, as one would expect. But carriage agreements with major carriers has been key. Additional distribution for Univision Deportes Network has been one of the main reasons Univision has reported quarterly profits over the past year, so it is easy to see why network programmers have been steadily moving their sports properties off the over the air channels, Univision and UniMas.
The ratings for the Club America win over their arch rival Guadalajara have been announced. And the broadcast took all other soccer games to the woodshed

For those who are math disabled, the Cremas-Cabras Clásico has 6 times the audience of the nationally broadcast MLS games, and nearly 4 times the audience of one of the US’ most popular sides, Manchester United, and their draw with the hammers in the FA Cup.
The ratings may have been even higher were it not for a carriage dispute between AT&T and Univision. Those folks on U-Verse did not get to see America’s 2-0 win at all.
It would have been unspeakable just a few years ago to air the biggest, most important match of the Liga MX calendar on anything other than Univision, but the runaway success of UDN has changed the paradigm. The momentum will carry through, at least through the summer as Copa America will also air on the Univision family of networks.
Despite the great news, it is not all flowers and sunshine for Univision, However. Telemundo outbid Univision for the rights to the World Cup starting in 2018. Telemundo will have very large shoes to fill. UDN’s coverage of Brazil14 was easily the most comprehensive (and best) in the history of US televison.
