Using a photograph of a matapalo, or strangler fig in English, known for its distinctive characteristic of enveloping and ultimately overpowering its host, as a metaphorical foundation, I asked DALL-E 3 to craft an image with the following prompt:
Create an image of a strangler fig where the main tree is depicted by or symbolic of the church, being constricted by representations of entertainment, stardom, money, and fame chocking it out.
The result is compelling visual metaphor—a tree at once vibrant yet ensnared by the very elements meant to augment its growth. Incidentally, that's also the main theme of today's episode, but let's back up.
Does entertainment even belong in the church? In this episode of the podcast, I share some of the deep sense of disillusionment that arises when respected spiritual leaders fall from grace, citing examples a couple of high profile example figures who've irreparably ruined their earthly legacies. Listen to find out, who, besides Mark Driscoll, I'm referring to.
Driscoll's recent controversies serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges within the Christian community about leadership, integrity, and accountability as well as… what role, if any does entertainment even have in the church? Does it belong, or is the fact we're even debating this indicate other graver issues?
We also discuss the dangers of distractions and idolatry, and how "killing sticks," can hinder our spiritual growth and relationship with God. I hope to challenge listeners to reflect on any aspects of their lives that may be taking precedence over their faith.
Amid reflections on personal and collective failures, this episode's overarching message remains one of hope, redemption, and the transformative power of returning to the core of our faith in Jesus and an organic approach to Christianity free from the matapalo of the American Gospel Enterprise.

This week I talk with J.D. I tackle a couple of world events. I say a “couple”, though it’s true, but I spend more time disproportionately focused on the situation of John Allen Chau, the missionary who was killed by The Sentinelese tribe on the North Sentinel Island off the coast of India. I felt like I needed to say something and offer my perspective, hoping that my slant is unique not just because I’m also a missionary — plenty of missionaries are chiming in on social media. Not just because I have a platform to do so, and not just because I have any opinions. But I feel like this is one of those gray areas and the rightness or foolishness of his actions which led to him being killed are not as black and white as people taking sides about this would insist it is. I respect and agree with my brothers and sisters in Christ who feel Chau counted the cost and will receive a martyr’s reward, while I ALSO have reservations and feelings that the perspective he went about this the way he did was also a bit misguided. But after that I have difficult with the oversimplifying of this that people on both sides are doing. Since the topic is multi-faceted, I decided to turn on the mic and share my thoughts verbally, for those of you who would want them, so there’s less confusion about what I’m saying if you can hear me out instead of just reading me out. And hopefully not adding to the noise. I’ve also thought of many other things I could have said and thoughts I could have included in this recording that I didn’t, but there are a lot of misconceptions about what a missionary is as it is that perhaps I’ll explore in another episode or find a suitable guest to have a discussion with about these things. But suffice it to say, I hope you get some value out of these thoughts today. Blessings to you!

Derek Snook, self-described son of a Baptist minister and entrepeneur joins me to discuss his recent book, The Definition of Success: What Living Homeless Can Teach You.
He tells me what was intended as a one-night experiment lasted a year, and years later he has decided to publish a book about how this experience had an impact on him and what he learned from it, including a well-paying temp agency he started and recently sold.
Definitely a different take on "loving your neighbor as yourself" if I ever heard one!
A few interesting points that came up in our discussion:
- While Derek could have quit this experiment at any given momenty and gone back home, most homeless and less fortunate don't have that option
- How living in bubbles in our culture is destructive to indviduals and groups, including the toll isolation is taking on mental health in general
- The intriguing way a city's layout is actually important to society
- What can we do to erase the barrier between wealthy and poor churches, as well as the racial divide, even in the church, between black and white congregations

I recorded an impromptu episode a couple of nights ago, rather spontaneously and share some of my thoughts and things I've recently learned about the Day of Pentecost. If you're a Bible detail geek like me, you'll be just as fascinated to reflect on the times and seasons of the Lord and patterns in Scripture. We talk about seeing in the spiritual realm in this episode of the podcast with Blake Healy, author of The Veil.
Ministry has been a foundational part of Blake’s life from the very beginning. He grew up as a missionary kid, living throughout different parts of Western Europe. He got involved in the prophetic ministry at the age of twelve and started serving on prophetic teams when he was thirteen. He began teaching about the prophetic at fifteen. He now travels around the world teaching about the prophetic and seeing in the spirit.
Since moving to Atlanta with his wife April, Blake has been serving in the Bethel Atlanta School of Supernatural Ministry and is now the Director of Bethel Atlanta’s School of Supernatural Ministry and oversees the Prophetic Ministry at the church.

We misunderstand the difference between the God who is presented in the Old Testament and the seemingly contradictory one we see in the New Testament.
Today's guest tells us that there are aspects of God's personality we haven't even begun to tap into! How often do you think of God's artistry, creativity and ... humility. Wait, God is humble?
Yes, he's the epitome of humility!

Lovesick: the latest audiobook I was privileged to narrate for Eric Gilmour. This makes my fourth one, and I’m not saying this just to promote it, but it’s hands down my favorite of his so far — and I’ve read all of them but one.

Updating a bit on where I've been for the last several months and why I've not been podcasting. If there's one keyword you take away from my intro and build up to the sample chapter, it's the word NORMALISATION.
The second half of the episode is from the audiobook Seeing in the Spirit Made Simple, by Praying Medic. The chapter is called Seeing in the Spirit: Gift or Ability?.
Description of the Book Can Anyone see in the Spirit? Seeing in the Spirit Made Simple provides clear, simple, biblical instruction that will help you see the invisible world of the spirit. It is the second book in The Kingdom of God Made Simple series; a self-study course designed to train believers how to live out the fullness of the life offered to us as heirs of God's kingdom.
The predominant view in the church today holds that seeing in the spirit is a rare gift given to only a few special people or an anointing we must seek. With the same straightforward, down-to-earth style used in Divine Healing Made Simple, the author holds this view up to the light of scripture and suggests that it has no biblical basis. Rather than being a gift given by God to only a few people, seeing in the spirit is an innate ability we all possess, which lies undeveloped in most of us. Through prayer, training, and exercise, this ability can be awakened and used by virtually anyone. The author provides Bible-based teaching along with dozens of testimonies and illustrations. There are also practical exercises at the end of the chapters to help develop your ability to see in the spirit.
Praying Medic and his wife have only recently learned how to see in the spirit. Come along as they re-trace the path they've taken that has led them to see angels, demons, and the heavenly realms. I contrast this with looking at the behavior and actions of the man who found the treasure in a field and immediately went and sold all he had so he could buy the field he found it in.

You may have noticed I’ve been posting fewer podcast episodes in recent months as well. I haven’t gone anywhere, but I have added a new habit to my lifestyle that in some ways has interfered with the time in my routine I used to have for writing and recording. I’ve been going to the gym.
For the first time in my adult life, I have a gym membership, and I have lost almost 26 lbs since July 2nd.
I’ve also likened speaking in tongues to a workout for your inner man the same way hitting the gym, using weights and cardio machines are a workout for your physical body.
Today's podcast is half stream-of-consciousness and half re-iterating thoughts from my blog post about this from a few weeks ago that seemed to really resonate with people and encourage people to pray in tongues more.

Sorry for the delay in posting a new episode. As I share in the beginning, I've been really struggling with allergy flare-ups since it's incredibly humid down here in the part of Peru where we live.
This week I shared some thoughts and reflections on why we crave religious institutions and why is it so easy for human beings to desire someone else to do our spirituality for us while we sit back and become spectators.
We don’t usually think of Moses with “goodness” and grace. Yet, the Apostle Paul compared this as inferior to the glory we get to know in the face of Christ under a new covenant!
What happened?
“Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.” (Ex 34:30)
Not only were they afraid, but Moses had to wear a veil over his face whenever he was not speaking with God (vv 33-35)
This is one thing we see in humankind over and over again. Like the first time Moses ascended the mountain, the very people God wanted to come inhabit and have relationship with wanted to keep God at arm’s length and obey rules and a command without yet knowing what they would be.
These are some of the things I dive into today as I reflect on how God wants to inhabit us, dwell among us and have relationship with us directly and not through our leaders or any other intermediary.

After spending the better part of the weekend in bed sick over the weekend, I got myself up on Monday to try kicking this cold that I've been fighting and recorded some of my thoughts into my microphone. I get a little preachy. But it's also with trepidation that I share these thoughts because I'm not trying to just be a critical armchair critic.
There are two main points I cover today:
1) I share quotes from an eyewitness of the Azusa Street Revival who talks of how it was totally spontaneous and everybody contributing -- kinda like the stuff we've been discussing on the podcast about house churches and organic churches.
2) Then I get into full-on "preach mode" and spend time in the whole paragraph of 2 Chronicles 7 that the infamous prayer meeting verse comes from.
After listening to this through for a full edit, I realize there's a lot left to be said and that I've left out, but I guess we'll just have to get back to that later, eh?
I don't dog the importance of gathering together to pray, but simply remind you what we need is to go do it and get out of the upper room, not just gather in it all the time in order to receive (which if you remember me saying, also has its place.)
Please listen with an open heart. Remember, I'm more FOR these types of things than "against" them, but I just think what I share today is worth considering.

We started off discussing the balance and tension between being carriers of the Holy Spirit’s revival presence, but yet still needing to contend to manifest it. On the one hand it’s true that all has been done on the cross and we don’t “earn” anything from God. But at this point I ran my analogy by Larry that just like Israel in the wilderness receiving manna on a daily basis, they still had to go collect it. If you slept in you missed that day’s manna, but you still didn’t work to create the crop or sow manna seed and cause it to harvest. God did His part, we do ours.
As I reflect on the conversation and listened to it again while editing it, I was pleasantly surprised how flawlessly we segued into talking about the marriage of revival and discipleship in the second half of this show. Regular listeners are going to enjoy today’s show, no doubt about it.
We all need upper room experiences, but the goal is not to stay in the upper room and never go into the streets below with the power of God to a dying world around us.

Finally, an interview for the first time in like what, 5 months? Today’s guest goes by the name of Chad Kidd. Chad and I have a mutual friend through Stephen Crosby, and we’re both a part of a group on Facebook about ‘the dones’ which has been a theme lately on the show and will be for a little while longer.
There's the dones, and then there's the "called out ones."
I posted a message in the group looking to have a group Skype call or Google chat hangout, and Chad was the only one available so we converted the conversation into a podcast discussion which I think you’re going to enjoy. Where has all the time gone?
Literally.
Sorry for the lack of updates in the last several months. We have been quite busy in ministry things down here in Peru, and with getting ready for the book launch, then we went to Canada to visit family over Christmas. On top of that moved into a new an unfinished apartment 9 days before our flight.
Today's episode is an mp3 of me preaching at River Run Fellowship in Peterborough, Ontario this past Sunday before we returned to Peru. I shared about some themes long-time listeners of the podcast are familiar with in terms of discipleship and only having one shot at this life. Will you stand before Him on that day wishing you had done more with your time and your talents, or will you hang your head in shame wishing you had done more?

This week on the podcast I have a very interesting conversation with Dan Dailey. As usually happens in internet land, I came across a blog post he wrote, wrote a response to it, he found it, and we became social media friends and eventually had a podcast conversation.
To bring yourself up to speed, he wrote a blog post called Regarding the Done with Church Buzz. A few months later when it was getting heavily shared on Facebook thanks to Wayne Jacobsen, I wrote my own Regarding the Done with Church Buzz in response to his.
Dan shares his background and how he wound up ‘leaving the institution’ and becoming a ‘done’. Practically born in a church pew, Dan comes from a long line of pastors and ministers on both sides of the family which takes us to about a year ago. By age 35, Dan doesn’t think he missed any two Sunday services in a row over a span of twenty years, and led worship and served as an elder, would preach in his fellowship on many occasions.
Going strong after the Lord, but no longer 'attending' and fellowship, how did he become one of the 35 million former church attenders who now identifies himself as a "done"? We explore his journey in today's episode.

If you believed it would be 500 years before Jesus returned instead of that He may return any minute, would that affect the way you live your day-to-day life?
I know for many the answer would be no. But unfortunately I know many more believers for whom it would make a world of difference.
If we believe we’re in the last of the last days, and that Jesus will come in 5 years instead of say 500, we will live and act accordingly and “let it” get worse by our inaction and watching the sky awaiting Jesus’ return. Even people who believe in a post-tribulation rapture can still live with a mentality that everything has to get worse with the only difference from their pre-trib counterparts is that the Church will be here for that worsening. If it does all get worse, does that mean it’s acceptable to not do anything about the evil in the generation around us?
Unfortunately, it usually does… Give this episode a listen and be challenged.

Do they really take us into and out of the presence of God? Nope. No such thing exists. No brokers of His presence. Jesus has done it. We are in God’s presence because of what Jesus did on the cross, and not because of anything the worship leader does. The manifest presence of God is like oxygen in your lungs — it’s something you breathe.
16:05 - The recent history of contemporary worship music and practices ("Restoration of David’s Tent")
Have you ever wondered or been asked WHY we do things the way we do in our charismatic services when it comes to the music before the preaching? Chances are you have little idea and neither will the person you ask. We just do it. In 1948 a move of God is where it all changed. Prior to that, hymns were typical. Out of this movement came the “restoration of David’s tent” which spread a misinterpretaiton of Amos 9:11-15 through a lot of the church and evolved during the charismatic movement of the 60s and third wave of the 80s. We discuss the need to understand what we are doing and what our theology behind it is.
26:56 - No to apostles and prophets, but yes to a modern paid position that has no NT substantiation?
You can find more churches who will fight and split over modern-day apostles and prophets despite their repeated mention in the New Testament, but yet you can’t find the modern professional musician worship leader in the NT, yet it seems nobody questions that. Why on earth is that?
If we can have the presence of God without music, then we have to ask ourselves why are we bothering and what are we doing? On the other hand, just because we can’t find something in the New Testament doesn’t mean it’s forbidden or morally wrong, however, we should be carefully to not then elevate these things to a level of status and requirement.
43:00 — Swapping one high for another: when worshipping and sensing the anointing becomes addictive
We talk about how the look and feel of a lot of the “cutting edge” worship can take on a rock concert appearance and if you muted the volume you wouldn’t know the difference. The same way the Jews of Jesus’ day had built so much tradition on what was once originally pure law code, in a sense we’ve done the same thing with various traditions related to worshipping through music.
57:00 There are no second generation burning bushes
Dr Crosby explains how one of the ways we find ourselves in situations or methods and traditions is when one generation experiences God in a certain way, and when discipling the next one they are taught the “how tos” of the first generation’s experience, but without experiencing that same burning bush for themselves. One of two things happens:
- We fake it because we want to experience it so bad, or
- We go into despair because we not experiencing it like the previous generation did.
Likewise, David’s life is not our example. He merely is a type and shadow who pointed the way to the Messiah who came. The One greater than David has come, and He has united Himself in Spirit with us in the inner most being. If you’re going to create a template for worship and “pressing in” to His presence, do it based on Christ who is IN you and not old covenant modalities.
Deep down in our own souls, we struggle with needing to earn and be rewarded, rather than just accepting what’s been given and freely poured out on the cross at Calvary. Charismatics and Pentecostals who are thrill-addicted struggle to believe it can all really be that simple.

There's a video that's been making the rounds on social media lately of Shia Labeouf yelling various iterations of "just do it", followed by the customary parody videos the internet is making. This episode of the podcast is not meant to join in on the meme, but in a similar way, what's holding you back? JUST DO IT!
We talk about how the biggest reason a whole generation of Israel that left Egypt failed to enter the Promised Land, because they basically talked themselves out of it.
Ten people were able to ruin it for over 2 million people. A whole generation of Israel that missed their purpose, and made God wait for the next one to be raised up.
Many believers already know there are various levels on which Israel rebelled against the Lord, and various specifics could be pointed to in the wilderness narratives as the cause of their spending 40 years there instead of inheriting their promised land immediately after leaving Egypt. However, it is interesting to note how seriously this incident affected their destiny.
It is worth taking serious consideration for our own lives since 1 Cor 10:6 says these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire or crave evil as they did.
Give this a listen and ask yourself: who are you listening to? Whose opinion matters so much to you that, even though they mean well, you are listening to them instead of God and pursuing whatever He has put on your heart to pursue?

In today's episode of the show, I continue sharing some thoughts, reflections and revelations on the fire of God and getting closer to the purging purifying fire of His presence.
What type of fire are you?
- Is your fire invisible, yet giving off an odor?
- Are you properly adding fuel to your fire, and spending time alone in intimate fellowship with the Father?
- Are you fueling your life with the Word of God and the oil of His presence?
- Are you allowing fresh winds of the Holy Spirit to fan those flames?
- Or are you dabbling with sin in your life so as to remove the oxygen His fire needs?
Let me encourage you to stir up the flames in yourself and one another that we may burn fully aflame for the Lord Jesus Christ! In order to do that, you need to preserve your own fire and keep it burning at all times.
This episode is not for ear tickling, so if you don't want to be challenged, you might as well just delete this episode from your smartphone or podcast app!
The first time the Lord revealed Himself to Moses was in a burning bush. He could have done His appearing in any form He wanted to, but chose this method -- a fire.
Likewise, when the Lord chose to come down and meet the people of Israel for the first time after departing from Egypt, he showed up as thunder, lightning and a thick cloud with a very loud trumpet blast. All of the few million men and women who heard it trembled (see Exodus 19:16-24).
The mountain itself did not speak, but the voice in the midst of the fire did.
It is interesting that at significant times when God showed Himself to people, He showed up in the appearance of fire. To Moses in the bush, to the people of Israel on Mount Sinai as a mountain of fire, and the believers in the upper room in Acts 2 tongues of fire on their heads.
Our God is a consuming fire (Heb 12:29, Deut 4:24). It's one of His many characteristics.

This week I recorded a spontaneous time of sharing my heart with you guys. Since the internet is all abuzz with the fact Creflo Dollar asked the body of Christ to help him buy a $65 million private jet for his ministry, I have mixed reaction.
Since this was the type of thing that would take me way too long to sit down and write, and I don't have the time, I figured a podcast would be the best way to do that.
So why does this missionary in a third world country think people need to leave Creflo alone? Or at least examine ourselves as to why we're irked about his request?

This week I took advantage of an opening when a scheduled interview had to cancel at the last minute, but I think it's a God thing because I've been wanting to share on the podcast these thoughts on the fire of God and spreading a revival all over the earth.
Either repentance will pave the way for revival, or revival will bring to the surface that sin which may be hidden from others’ sight. One cannot see revival without a pure heart, and in the midst of the fire, the dross will come to the surface.

This week Dave Edwards joins us again, and we began our conversation with absolutely nothing planned, and it turned out to be a longer discussion than normal. Whether that's a good thing or not, we'll let you be the judge.
We begin with asking Dave about what’s new with him, and expectation for 2015. He tells us the key to revival is not “waiting for a surprise”, but positioning ourselves to be ready and “going for it”.
Steve gave Dave four different topics to discuss, and the first one he picked was the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon. We camped here for the next 30 minutes, using it as a springboard to discuss personal holiness and whether Christians need to be careful of what we watch.
Then we transitioned into discussing the 40th anniversary of Saturday Night Live for a little bit and the pattern/template this entertainment institution has given us for multiple generations, and then discussed the Middle East conflict surrounding ISIS with relation to what role is the Church meant to play, and are we doing it?

We continue today with some thoughts on building the temple of God and His kingdom in the earth. If you’re new to the podcast, we started talking about this a number of episodes ago in one titled “Come Up Out of Babylon”, where I laid out a challenge and exhortation based on the text in Haggai about how very few people returned from Babylonian captivity to rebuild Jerusalem, specifically the temple. I feel this has a prophetic representation about how so few people want to give up their own lives so as to build what God is building in the earth.
But in today's show we talk specifically about the temple, looking at the things Paul says in the New Testament, using a couple of anchor texts. The first one I went through pretty significantly in a chapter of my book The Imperishable Seed of Christ(which is FREE in all major ebook platforms), in the chapter where we talked about the seed grows to become an imperishable Kingdom due to the materials used to construct it.
Are you building use cheap material or costly ones? Are you afraid of man or do you fear the Lord? Are you building something that will survive the "testing with fire"?
If not, you won't enjoy today's challenge.
I've noticed oftentimes there's two camps of people in the church, at least when it comes to the goal of "getting back to New Testament Christianity". There's the one that focuses on the supernatural aspect of how the early church flowed in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, healed the sick, performed miracles, signs and wonders and like in the book of Acts, thousands of people were added to the Kingdom of God.
But often times those who focus on the early part of Acts 2, neglect the end of the chapter, which says,
And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42-47, ESV)
Then there's the camp that focuses on having "community", but practically balk at the idea of the supernatural and have little interest in flowing in the gifts of the Holy Spirit like earlier in that same chapter.
Today we're going to start talking about combining the two and how we need a supernatural community amongst believers if we're to see results like the early church did in terms of a disciple-making movement in our day.

This week I continue with my flow of thoughts from last week concerning making disciples. We hold discipleship as one of our main core values in our ministry Oikos, and seek to reproduce reproducers. Which is why we have a balance of informal and formal discipling. We spend time hanging out and goofing around with our disciples and those we’re mentoring through things like movies, games, and eating meals together.
Likewise there’s also formal stuff like teaching and Bible study, one on one times of mentoring, and so forth.
To properly disciple, I don’t believe you have one without the other. For example, pastoring a large mega church can result in you having 5000 tithing members who attend your event every Sunday morning but that does not mean they’re your disciples.
They’re attendees. So let's unpack the image inside the seed of the Word of God and how discipleship goes from just passing on information, to imitation and innovation.

There’s really ONE specific thing Jesus commanded us to do: MAKE DISCIPLES of the Nations. Yet, depending on who you talk to, this is viewed as optional, or something only special people like pastors or missionaries do.
Today I share from my heart a personal 'kairos' moment that changed everything for me: my ministry focus, how I use my time on a weekly basis, who and what I focus my energy towards.
I personally don't want to wait until I've gone a few decades in life and say "you know, I wish I did this instead". I feel like I'm on the cusp of being able to make that my focus and learning from those who've gone before me, and take heed as to what they say is the most important thing to be doing with the short life we have to make an impact for the Kingdom of God. Whether that's on the mission field in Peru, closed places in Asia, or as a millennial in the workforce in North America.
Take the initiative and make disciples of those whom God has put in your path right now in your life. Not much else will last.
This week we finally release an interview I've been sitting on for a couple of months with Brian Guerin, itinerant minister with Bridal Glory International, and author of the new book God of Wonders: Experiencing God's Voice Through Signs, Wonders, and Miracles.
This episode flows nicely with what we've been talking about concerning the collective Bride of Christ and we get back to "the upper room" again.
We started off today with learning a little bit about Brian and his testimony, and specifically his experiences cultivating an intimacy with God and experiencing signs and wonders on a regular basis and we discuss God's supernatural provision.

When we look at family on mission, we see we are meant to function as an extended family on a mission together, to seek and save that which is lost. When the Holy Spirit came down on the day of Pentecost, the believers were in one accord praying daily and apparently sharing meals together. They were in the upper room...in someone's home. Not in the religious temple!
What if the emphasis is not and was not that God showed up in power that day to inaugurate his ekklesia (church, extended family) because they were praying, but because they were living and functioning together as an extended family, together in purpose and singleness of vision, and prayer was a natural fruit of that?
After looking at the Day of Pentecost through a different lens than you might have viewed it through before, we then segue into discipleship through something found in Song of Solomon 1:16-17:
"Behold, you are beautiful, my beloved, truly delightful. Our couch is green; the beams of our house are cedar; our rafters are pine."
When we are intimate with God in the secret place, we produce fruit, and in turn reproduce and multiply. When we abide in Him, out of necessity we will be helping Him build HIS house and not our own.
This week we finally have Dave Edwards back on the podcast and talk about some of the latest going on in theological internet land.
We recorded this episode a few weeks ago and the Left Behind reboot had just tanked at the box office, so naturally we get talking about it a bit and how much our eschatology shapes our worldview. Are our assumptions of end times correct?
Then we segue into first century church life and Dave's thoughts on organic church and recent revelations on revival.

Today I was privileged to have an interview with a friend and former teacher of mine in my days at FIRE School of Ministry named Bert Farias. He and his son Daniel recently co-wrote a book called My Son, My Son: Fathering and Training a Holy Generation.

Recently I was approached by Bryan Entzminger about being a guest on his podcast, Engaging Missions. As we talked, he let me share some exciting things about how mine and Lili’s ministry has shifted over time on the mission field, and some of the amazing things God has been doing in the past few months. I think you’ll be encouraged and inspired as you listen.
Apparently Bryan first found me through the Fire On Your Head podcast and really enjoyed it. He says he loved hearing how God was using our ministry to bring people to know Christ and to advance the Kingdom. His words also reinforce for me why, besides just interviewing other authors, it’s a good idea to share testimonies and stuff that’s going on in our life and ministry here in Peru.
Challenge, Revelation, and Current Ministry
Like everybody, I’ve had a number false starts and failures. These are the things that missionaries don’t often share when they’re visiting churches and seeking support. They don’t always want to talk about the disciple who walked away from Christ or the ministry outreach that they had to shut down because it wasn’t bearing fruit. In my journey, it took nearly five years for me get to where I THOUGHT I was headed when I started out – involved in a ministry school, teaching the Word and making disciples. I may not have articulated it or had the same vision coming here in 2009 as I do now looking forward, but along the way there have been a number of things that have changed and some false starts that I share in this interview. In fact, it’s been just recently that we’ve started to see significant fruit in Chorrillos, Peru as I’ve been blogging about.

This week I was privileged to finally have Michael Dow on the show. He has spent his entire saved life in a few different types of ministires, one of which was a missional community called King's People in Charlotte, N.C. He now is apprenticing with Daniel Kolenda, of Christ For All Nations, doing massive crusade evangelism.

This week we have Dr. Stephen Crosby back on the podcast to discuss loving our neighbors on a practical level. We've touched on this in past discussions, but spend a whole hour talking about a few benefits and challenges to meeting in house churches as opposed to 'institutional' church. We discuss what the house church movement gets wrong and what they get right.

This week I ask our guest his opinion of when different healing evangelists have been arrested for "practicing medicine without a license". What exactly does that mean, and are we inadvertently doing that ourselves when we minister divine healing to the sick or hurting? Should Christians give anybody medical advice?
If a person who believes in divine healing or faith healing takes medication, is that a lack of faith and not "practicing what they preach" or is it a matter of being responsible?
Is there truly a relationship between our unforgiveness and not being healed?

There is no Christianity without experiencing God. Yet so many people admit that they have a difficult time experiencing God's presence or hearing God's voice. Why is this and how can we fix that in our own lives?
This week we have Eric William Gilmour on the podcast and he passionately shares about cultivating a union with Christ and walking in such an intimacy with Him. We discuss Eric's ministry, Sonship International, as well as his books Burn: Melting Into the Image of Jesus, and Union: The Thirsting Soul Satisfied in God in which Eric tells us is an expansion of one of the concepts from Burn.
There's no pre-nuptual agreement in Christ, both the Bride and Groom share the same assets, no matter who brought the most in to the union. We are made what we are in Christ because of everything Jesus made us. Likewise, there is no Christianity without experiencing God, as Eric relates that the Bible is not meant to merely be a recipe book, but a source of food.
We need to hear God's voice and not just read His book. No relationship works without communication; how can ministers of the Gospel affect other peoples' lives if they don't even believe you can hear God's voice and hear from Him personally?
In this episode we discuss the importance of experientially walking in the Spirit.
This week Dave Edwards and Steve Bremner catch up over skype and share some testimonies on the power of the Holy Spirit. Then, rather quickly we get around to discussing dream interpretation and "memory stones" and how easily the Holy Spirit wants to show us things and use us to minister to the world around us.
We also give a brief Old Testament history lesson about why it was so devastating when the enemies of Israel destroyed the temple of the Lord.
This week we interview Art Thomas, missionary evangelist and author of the new book Spiritual Tweezers: Removing Paul's "Thorn in the Flesh" and Other False Objections to God's Will for Healing. He is also co-director of a new movie called Paid in Full: Physical Healing documentary.
So, as you guessed it, we talked about divine healing, one of our favourite subjects on this podcast, but we focused more on discussing Paul's Thorn in the Flesh.

- Do you have to grow in your Christian walk before God can use you to heal the sick?
- How does Matthew 7:21-23 apply to healing and our character in the midst of working miracles?
- When Jesus told us we'd do greater miracles in his name, was that just figurative?
I also asked Josh what he tells people who do believe in healing or who loved his book, but yet they are still sick, in pain and otherwise, unhealed. What's the deal with that?

It's a subtle form of manipulation that some leaders use in order to insulate themselves from being challenged. It's a form of manipulation, plain and simple.
We discuss how this works, and spend the second half of the conversation discussing practical ways we can change this in our own personal lives and in our fellowship with one another.

We shoot the breeze and discuss the differences between missional community and house churches. Is it just an alternative to “big churches?” What is a community on mission together? When the writer of Hebrews talks about not forsaking gathering together, is this referring to attending a weekly service, or something more profoundly missed in our modern context?
Mark and Shaun also brought up some very interesting points in this discussion, about how there is no ‘magic silver bullet‘ to community, but it takes lots of time and hard work. Are you willing to put in the commitment and sacrifice? In launching missional communities, or in planting house churches, by and large, are we going to the pattern of Scripture for our foundation, or looking at the culture around us and mixing it in with our desires and preferences for what an MC is supposed to look like?
