Madale Scheepers:
I am an Optometrist for 16 years, owning my own practice for more than 11
years. I graduated at University of Johannesburg in 2006. I did my post graduate diploma in
sportsvision in 2010 at University of Johannesburg. I am currently busy with my ocular therapeutics course and my passion extends to helping kids with learning disabilities, thus I am a Stark Griffen dyslexia specialist as well.
My passion for optometry started at the young age of 7 years when an optometrist saw that I was born with a congenital cataract – which was removed in 1991. Unfortunately, at the age of 7 years no patching really helped and I am now an “amblyopic, monocular optometrist”. All I ever wanted to do was “changing life’s through vision”! For obvious reasons, I love kids and feel early detection can change their lives, the way mine was changed! I am a proud mom of two beautiful young kids and the wife of my awesome, supporting husband Coenie for more than 10 years!

Artificial intelligence or AI is the new buzz word which is impacting every industry, including health care. The global AI in healthcare market size is expected to grow from USD 4.9 billion in 2020 and reach USD 45.2 billion by 2026; it is projected to grow at a CAGR of 44.9% during the forecast period. The major factors driving the market growth are the increasing volume of healthcare data, adaptation of newer technologies, need to reduce healthcare costs, rising imbalance between workforce and patients. It is thus very important to understand, adapt and contribute towards building this technology.

In this interview I had an opportunity to interview Mr. Jayanth Rasamsetti, co-founder of Sgmoid an AI based startup that is disrupting the healthcare industry. We discuss how over time, human clinicians may move toward tasks and job designs that draw on uniquely human skills like empathy, persuasion and big-picture integration instead of repetitive time consuming tasks.

He walks us through various examples on how eye care providers can contribute in these developments with there clinical skills and expertise.

Along with all the technical information we also see the fun side of our AI expert in our "Rapid Fire" segment.

While looking for an inspirational Indian Optometrist across the border for my podcast series, I was luckily introduced to Dr. Arijit Chakraborty who I like to call as a "Global Optometrist". While working in a different country can be challenging, Dr. Arijit Charkraborty has an experience of working in five different countries. Yes, you read it right; five countries.

It was truly an enriching experience to learn about his journey which started in India and spread across several borders like Malaysia, New Zealand, Canada and United states of America. If you may think that he is currently settled and working in one country; well let me tell you that's wrong. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Midwestern University in Chicago (USA) and also holds an adjunct faculty appointment at University of Waterloo in Ontario (Canada). He maintains active collaboration with tier-1 universities and research hospitals in the US, Canada, New Zealand and India.
With a lot to share in limited time, Dr. Arijit briefly talks about his experiences, struggles and limitations in different countries. He also talks about his success stories and research part of which was broadcasted in mainstream media like Times of India and New Zealand Herald just to mention few out of all.

Do listen till the end to learn about his "piece of advice" which he would like to share with all you listeners.

With about 450 million people needing vision correction, uncorrected refractive error accounts for over 50% of vision impairment in India. Optometry is yet an unregulated profession. Defocus Media and Corporate Optometry Nation presents a podcast with me, the Nerdy Optometrist, where I share details about the history and growth of Optometry in India post the launch of ‘Vision 2020 – Right For Sight’ program.

I provide insights about how optometry is practiced differently in India compared to major countries like USA and Australia. Optometrists in India are exploring different ways to deal with major competitors like Lenskart and Titan Eye Plus. Lack of regulation affects the policies for insurance and law in India. Efforts by various organization like Optometry Council of India (OCI), Associations of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO), Indian Optometry Federation (IOF) and ‘Let’s RevolutionarEyes’ are contributing towards promoting and regularizing the profession. Organizations like MasterClass Optometry are promoting quality CME for practicing optometrists. India, still a developing market, has tremendous opportunities for collaboration in academics, research and corporate world. I share my experience and knowledge over the years to bring us closer to understanding optometry in India.
