The Rt. Rev. Jennifer A. Reddall (Bishop of Arizona) celebrates Bishop Richard Allen - Allen was born into slavery in 1760 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Allen, his parents, and his siblings were eventually sold to an owner who allowed them to attend church. However, the church they attended created a segregated section, and in 1787, Jones led black worshippers out of church in protest.

Diocesan Canon Judith Conley will be preaching on Frederick Douglass - Born as a slave in February 1818, Frederick Douglass was separated from his mother at the age of eight. A strong advocate of racial integration, Douglass disavowed black separatism and wanted to be counted as equal among his white peers. When he met Abraham Lincoln in the White House, he noted that the President treated him as a kindred spirit without one trace of condescension. Douglass died in 1895.

Alan Keith DePuy was born in Torrance, California on May 31, 1966 to the late Donald Clinton DePuy and Melva Lynn DePuy. Born with an incredible gift of music, Alan was – at nine years of age – already a guest organist for Crystal Cathedral, in Garden Grove, California, being in the spotlight of national television frequently. He continued to appear on “The Hour of Power” until the age of 18. He continued his formal music education at Chapman University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degrees in Organ Performance and Piano Accompaniment. He studied with Dr. William Hall, Dr. Ronald Huntington and Dr. Tanya Fleisher while at Chapman University. He continued his education in the graduate Organ Performance program at Arizona State University, where he studied with Dr. Robert Clark and Dr. Kimberly Marshall.
As a young organist, Alan played in numerous competitions and received four first-place honors in competitions sponsored by The American Guild of Organists. He also played concerts throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.
Alan was called to make music, but specifically, he was called to make music for the church. He shared his gift with churches across the country that he served, including First Christian Church, Fullerton, California; St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach, California; Holy Family Cathedral, Orange, California; Trinity Cathedral, Phoenix, Arizona; St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle, Washington; St. Thomas Church, Coral Gables, Florida; and St. George’s Church, Germantown, Tennessee.
Alan’s talent and musical ability were tremendous and unparalleled; his passion for great music was always reflected in his willingness to share his incredible musical gifts with everyone – and his desire to awaken the love of music in even the most neutral observer. As tremendous as were his musical gifts, they could not overshadow his love for all humanity: Alan loved unconditionally and cared for everyone around him; wherever he went, his arms were always open in love. Even as we celebrate that Alan has passed into Resurrection light, and into the nearer presence of our God, we grieve the loss of him as a loving friend and supportive colleague, and the loss of his tremendous talent in the Church and in the world.
Alan is survived by his brother, Thomas DePuy, his nephew, Dylan DePuy, his sister-in-law, Susanne DePuy and many, many friends, colleagues, choir members and parishioners whose lives he touched in profound ways, whom he loved unconditionally, and who will always remember and love him.

February 12: The Rev. Rosa Brown will be preaching Absalom Jones
Absalom Jones was born on November 6, 1746, in a house slave in Delaware. He taught himself to read out of the New Testament, among other books. When sixteen, he was sold to a store owner in
Philadelphia. There he attended a night school for blacks, operated by Quakers. At twenty, he married another slave, and purchased her freedom with his earnings.
Jones bought his own freedom in 1784. In 1787, black Christians organized the Free African Society, the first organized Afro-American society, and Absalom Jones and Richard Allen were elected overseers. Members of the Society paid monthly dues for the benefit of those in need.
The African Church applied for membership in the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, and in October 1794 it was admitted as St. Thomas African Episcopal Church. Bishop White ordained
Jones as deacon in 1795 and as priest on September 21, 1802. St. Thomas Church, Philadelphia, grew to over 500 members during its first year. Known as “the Black Bishop of the Episcopal Church,” Jones was an example of persistent faith in God and in the church as God’s instrument.
Jones died on February 13th, 1818, in Philadelphia.

New Associate for Hispanic Ministries - The Rev. Rosa M. Brown - A native of Costa Rica and a cradle Episcopalian, the Rev. Rosa M. Brown will be moving to Phoenix after serving Episcopal congregations in Arizona, California, New Jersey, and Ohio. Rosa received her theological education at Seminario Biblico Latinoamericano (Costa Rica) and General Theological Seminary in New York. She was ordained in November 1994, and was the first women ordained to the priesthood in Costa Rica. She will be serving at both Trinity Cathedral and Iglesia Santa Maria in Phoenix.

The Rev. Canon Anita Braden joined the staff of the Diocese of Arizona as Canon to the Ordinary in June 2019.
Braden was previously the Chaplain of St. Margaret’s School, an all-girls Episcopal boarding school, in Tappahannock, Virginia. She is in the final stages of obtaining her Doctor of Ministry from Virginia Theological Seminary. The thesis is untitled, but it will focus on the disciplines of educational leadership and Christian spirituality. She has experience working with large and small parishes, and served on the diocesan staff in Milwaukee as the Urban Missioner.
She enjoys talking about her love of Jesus and has a commitment to lifelong education and formation.

1 Corinthians 15:12–20
If Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ-- whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died.

The Rev. Canon Cornelia Eaton, MDiv. serves as the Canon to the Ordinary for Ministry of the Episcopal Church in Navajoland. She is an elected member of the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church and a graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary. She is a member of the Salt Clan people of the Diné (Navajo). Her faith and practice is rooted in the Diné ancestral perspective in addition to the theology and traditions of the Anglican Communion.

Canon Carmen was ordained to the Priesthood in 1985, actively ministered for over 30 years, and is now retired. She holds both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Education and Clinical Counseling. Additionally, she received a Doctorate from The Church Divinity School of the Pacific, located in Berkeley, CA. She has service within 5 diocese including the Diocese of Honduras where she helped to develop a School of Theology to raise an indigenous priesthood. In 2000, Morehouse published "Women's Uncommon Prayers", which includes a section of Commemorative Collects written by the Rev. Canon Lorna H. Williams. These collects are about women who have witnessed to the love and justice of God in various forms of oppression. Canon Carmen is included in the collection of collects by Williams, which supplement lessons appointed for Common Saints in The Book of Common Prayer.

The Rev. Rosa M. Brown is a native from Costa Rica and a cradle Episcopalian. Rosa has worked as Priest-In-Charge in the Diocese of Costa Rica.
Prior to her calling to the Diocese of Arizona as Vicar at St. John’s, Bisbee and St, Stephen’s, Douglas, Rosa, served as Associate Rector at St. Philip’s in the Hills, Tucson, AZ. , as Vicar at Iglesia de la Magdalena, Glendale, CA and has served as Priest-In-Charge/Hispanic Missioner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Parish, Paterson, NJ, as well as Associate Rector/Hispanic Missioner at Church of Our Saviour in Cincinnati, OH.
Rosa is a graduate of Seminario Biblico Latinoamericano (Costa Rica) and General Theological Seminary in New York, where she received a Master of Divinity Degree and Master in Sacred Theology. Ordained to the Holy Orders in November 1994, Rosa became the first women ordained to the Priesthood in Costa Rica.

Fr. Gerardo brings to St. Mark’s more than 24 years of experience in ministry: 10 years as a lay minister and 14 as an ordained priest. He has served in different capacities and churches in two Dioceses in Los Angeles and Colorado, before accepting the call to St. Mark’s in Mesa, Arizona. He is fully bilingual in English, Spanish, and also speaks Italian, and has served in several multicultural congregations. He has years of experience in peace and social justice ministries, immigration advocacy, and 501c3 non-profit organizations. Fr. Gerardo loves Arizona, and returns to this part of our country to have the opportunity to “give back” to this land that opened its arms for the first time to him in our great nation.
Fr. Gerardo and his wife Viviana were both born and raised in Mexico. They have two children, Bruno and Viviana Geraldyne.

Girata is the eighth Rector of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, TX, founded over 70 years ago, and where today 6,500 parishioners of diverse ideologies worship and serve together in more than 100 distinct ministries. Previously, Chris served as Rector of Calvary Episcopal Church in Memphis, TN, Associate Rector at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Birmingham, AL, and as a seminarian at The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. and at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, MD. Chris holds degrees from Stetson University, Emory University, Virginia Theological Seminary, and Duke University. He is a recognized leader in the Episcopal Church, presenting regularly at church-wide conferences, including Virginia Theological Seminary and Jubilee Park & Community Center, and writes regularly for publications such as Katy Trail Weekly and The Dallas Morning News. Father Jackson accepted the call to be the next Rector at St. John the Baptist in 2011. Before that, he served on the pastoral staff of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Scottsdale for four years.
Fr. Jackson has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from the University of Connecticut, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree from St. John’s University, New York. He practiced law in New York and Washington, D.C. for more than 20 years, and was a law professor.
In 2002, he and his wife, Barbara, moved to the valley, and he spent three years as Executive Vice-President of the Harlem Globetrotters International, Inc., before embarking on the call and study for ordained ministry.
From 2005 to 2007, he served as Director of a faith based, non-profit service organization called VICap Faith in Action, in Phoenix. He then accepted the call to serve at Resurrection Lutheran Church.
He spent three years in liturgical study, spiritual development and training at Trinity Cathedral of the Diocese of Arizona before being called to St. John the Baptist and ordained into the Episcopal priesthood.
He and Barbara have two sons and two grandsons.

Hershey is a native North Carolinian. Baptized and raised at St. Ambrose Church in Raleigh, she is a third-generation Episcopalian. Hershey was educated at North Carolina A&T State University and Howard University before graduating from General Theological Seminary.
Most recently, Hershey has worked in the Presiding Bishop’s Office of Evangelism, where she was Project Lead for the Beloved Community Storysharing Campaign.
Hershey is married to Rob Stephens. Rob is the Minister for Congregational Life at Middle Collegiate Church, a multicultural community in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Together, they enjoy cooking, and also working on the Poor People’s Campaign.

Wendell A. Hollis-
Judge Wendell A. Hollis has served this country and his community for over 40 years. He is known as a “pillar of the Phoenix [Immigration] bench.” Known for his keen intellect, astute analytical skills, and myopic attention to detail; members of the Immigration Bar describe Judge Hollis as “tough, but fair.” When they knew they were appearing before him, they worked extra hard to be prepared.
Judge Hollis served as a mentor and role model for other judges, attorneys, interpreters, clerks and interns. During his tenure as an Immigration Judge, he completed over 16,000 cases. While many considered him conservative, he was the centrist at the Court, insisting on applying and following the rule of law and precedent decisions. Even so, Judge Hollis could, and would, rule contrary to the consensus of his fellow judges, when he believed case law dictated a different outcome. Judge Hollis also served and retired from the United States Army; and served in the United States Air Force as well.
The Honorable Wendell A. Hollis was appointed Immigration Judge in January 2003. He was sworn in at the San Francisco Immigration Court by Chief Immigration Judge Michael J. Creppy. Judge Hollis received his B.A. from California State University, Sacramento; his J.D. from University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, Sacramento; his L.L.M. from the University of Virginia, Judge Advocate General’s School, Charlottesville; and his Master of Theological Studies from the Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary [now Gateway Seminary of the SBC], Scottsdale, Arizona.
From 1999 to January 2003, Judge Hollis served as Deputy District Counsel for the former Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in Phoenix, Arizona. He served as an assistant district counsel for the INS in Eloy Arizona from 1996 to 1999. From 1994 to 1996, he served as a Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, 3rd Army, Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia. Judge Hollis served as senior defense counsel for the Army’s Trial Defense Services in Wurzburg, Germany from 1992 to 1994. He was the Officer in Charge of the Wiesbaden Legal Center in Germany from 1990 to 1992. He served in various other military positions beginning in 1980.
Judge Hollis has served as a spiritual leader in his community and on his job, always available to counsel, pray, and comfort. While attending Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, now deceased Bishop Alexis Thomas requested Judge Hollis create and lead a legal consultation ministry. From that request sprang the Advocacy Ministry which provides an invaluable service to members of Pilgrim Rest. The Advocacy Ministry also hosted numerous public forums and continues to serve the Phoenix Community. Additionally, Judge Hollis developed and established a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at Pilgrim Rest as will, helping church members and members of the public realize thousands of dollars in income tax refunds.
In 2013, the Arizona African American Legislative Leadership Conference selected Judge Hollis as an unsung Hero for the Justice Pillar. Judge Hollis is married to the lovely Patricia Hollis (over 38 years), and they are the proud parents of a blended family of 5 children (one deceased), 9 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

We are excited to kick off Black History Month with a presentation on The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s Letter from a Birmingham City Jail, led by Professor Myles Lynk.
Dr. Lynk is a professor of law at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law where he teaches legal ethics and corporate law. He and his family are members of All Saints Episcopal Church in Phoenix, where he has served on the vestry, as a eucharistic minister, as a member of the Community of Hope, and as a delegate to Diocesan Convention. Myles is a member of the Union of Black Episcopalians and the Arizona Diocese’s Anti-Racism Committee. In his professional life, Myles served as Chair of the American Bar Association’s Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice and worked on the White House Domestic Policy Staff in the Carter Administration. Myles is a recipient of the Arizona Black Bar’s Excellence in Diversity Award and the State Bar of Arizona’s Award for Service to the Legal Profession. He has served on the City of Chandler’s Human Relations Commission and is a Life Member of the NAACP.

As the daughter of an airman in the US Air Force, Veronica came to Arizona via Luke Air Force Base over forty-five years ago, and stayed. Being ordained to the Diaconate in 1993 would overlap an Arizona State employee profession of project management in computer programming, and part-time teaching for the Maricopa Community College system for the Computer Science curriculum.
For Veronica, the Diaconate role would begin by encompassing the world of HIV/AIDS in its cultural height during the 1990’s. She sat on the board of “AIDS Project Arizona”, and was chairperson for the “AZ Diocese AIDS Task Force.” At the beginning of the “2000” decades, Veronica’s role shifted to “Liturgy Coordinator” for Trinity Cathedral, director for the Diocesan “Deacon Formation Academy” (DFA), and in 2004 was appointed Archdeacon by Bishop Smith. Having stepped down from an active deacon’s role in 2015, Veronica remains a faculty member and advisor for DFA.
Whether being an advocate for persons living with AIDS or helping to form deacons, Veronica’s message is the same: “we should embody the love that is about justice, peace, and the dignity of every human being”.

TODAY’S Guest Preacher - The Rev. Mark Andrew Jefferson earned a B.A. in Political Science from Norfolk State University (NSU) concentrating in Public Administration. While at NSU, he served as the President of the political science honor society Pi Sigma Alpha, received the Vince Lombardi Most Outstanding Football Athlete Award, and was named a Coca-Cola Academic All-American.
Upon graduating from Norfolk State, he entered the Candler School of Theology at Emory University where he graduated with a Masters of Divinity degree. During his time at Candler, he served as President of the Black Student Caucus while pursuing academic an academic concentration in homiletics and earning a certificate in Black Church Studies. He was awarded the W. E. B. Du Bois Noomo Award by the Black Church Studies Program at Candler in 2012. He is currently at Emory finishing his Ph.D. in religion. He was awarded a Doctoral Fellowship from the Forum for Theological Exploration. He is a doctoral candidate who will be defending his dissertation examining the influence of W. E. B. Du Bois and the idea of the “Talented Tenth” upon the preaching imagination of African American homiletics. In 2017, Jefferson was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College.
While pursuing the Ph. D. degree, he has been active as a teacher. He co-facilitated a preaching conference for lay pastors in the Bahamas that was featured in The Nassau Guardian. His areas of academic interest include African American preaching traditions, Hip Hop culture, and the future of theological education. He currently serves as Visiting Professor of Homiletics at Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS), in Alexandria, Virginia. He also serves as Associate Director of the Deep Calls to Deep preaching program, an initiative supported by a Lilly grant to cultivate embodied preaching. He is also a presence on social media blogging extensively with posts being featured on Urban Cusp and The Root.

Jeffrey John is Dean of St Albans. He heads St Albans Cathedral, which is the oldest Christian site in the United Kingdom, the place the place where Britain’s first Christian martyr, Alban, was executed and buried in 303 AD.
Jeffrey is a Welsh-speaking Welshman, who was born and brought up in Rhondda, South Wales. He studied Classics, Modern Languages and Theology at Oxford. After a curacy in Wales he returned to Oxford, first to be Chaplain and Lecturer in Theology at Brasenose College, and then became Fellow and Dean of Divinity at Magdalen College. His academic specialism is New Testament Theology. He has also been a parish priest in South London, and immediately before his present job was Canon Theologian of Southwark Cathedral and Director of Ministerial Training in the Southwark Diocese. He has been partnered with Grant, another priest, since 1976. In 2003 he was appointed Bishop of Reading, but was removed from the post by Archbishop Williams when objections were made against his partnership. His books include 'The Meaning in the Miracles', and 'Permanent Faithful Stable: Christian Same-Sex Marriage'.

Canon Morrison is the Canon for Ecumenical and Community Relations for the Episcopal Diocese of
Arizona. His role involves serving as the Episcopal chaplain to the Arizona legislature. He is also an elected director of the Arizona Faith Network. He previously served as Diocesan Chancellor and Chair of the Canons Committee.
Canon Morrison is also a lawyer known for his work in his earlier years as a practitioner, writer, and teacher on natural resources law and environmental ethics.
A graduate of San Francisco Theological Seminary, he has also served as an officer and/or trustee of three other theological seminaries: Claremont School of Theology in California, Seabury-Western School of Theology in Evanston, IL, and the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA.
Canon Morrison has served churches in Flagstaff, Chandler, and Tempe.
He is married to his wife Elaine. They have two adult daughters.

The Rev. Tommy J. Dillon II is Rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Bainbridge Island, Washington. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Tommy honors and values his conservative Anglo-Catholic Episcopal roots, but has moved well beyond them in ministry, theology, and liturgical style. He has a passion for helping faithful church people discover how to take ministry and spirit beyond the church walls, and embrace new ways of being the church in a changing world. In Tommy’s world, there is no such thing as the “outcast and the stranger.” His work with newly-released prisoners, people suffering mental illness and homelessness, and Hurricane Katrina survivors, gives him a fearless compassion for human need. During his nine years as Rector of St. Aidan’s, San Francisco, parish foodbank and elder ministries flourished, and Tommy was dubbed ‘'the Vicar of the Castro District' for his work with the LGBTQ community. Tommy Dillon serves on the board of the Wild Goose Festival, and is newly-elected to the General Theological Seminary Board of Trustees. He graduated Louisiana State University, Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University, and General Theological Seminary, where he specialized in Anglican Liturgy. Collaborating to create eclectic liturgy feeds his soul. Good food, good friends, and road trips with his Whippet pal Josh reveal the Holy in the everyday world.
